I Got A Girlfriend After Losing My Memory (Transmigration) - Chapter 2
When the nurse activated the paging system, Tao Ran happened to be in the doctor’s office, so she immediately learned about Tang Fuzhi’s amnesia.
Whether due to the nurse’s carelessness or not, the paging system remained open.
Tao Ran could clearly hear the nurse explaining the misunderstanding to Tang Fuzhi, and Tang Fuzhi raised no questions.
Tao Ran glanced at Tang Fuzhi’s medical report on the desk, her ears ringing with the nurse’s effusive praise of her.
After a moment of contemplation, she couldn’t help but think: Since Tang Fuzhi seems to believe what the nurse said, why not go along with it?
After all, Tang Fuzhi had lost her memory, and Tao Ran was the only person by her side…
Tao Ran’s eyes gleamed faintly.
Zheng Xiaoxiao, who had known Tao Ran for years, recognized that such a smile usually meant trouble.
Zheng Xiaoxiao opened her mouth to say something, but when her gaze met Tao Ran’s bright, shining eyes, she closed it again.
Forget it. Given Tao Ran’s stubborn nature, there was no way she’d listen to anything Zheng Xiaoxiao said, especially since this involved Tang Fuzhi.
As Tao Ran approached the hospital room door, the nurse was still gushing about her virtues.
She took a deep breath, her thumb rubbing against the pad of her index finger, smoothed her expression, and finally stepped inside.
Having cared for Tang Fuzhi for over three months, the nurse had inevitably come into contact with Tao Ran.
The nurse knew perfectly well that Tang Fuzhi’s gentleness was reserved solely for Tang Fuzhi, so she fell silent the moment she saw Tao Ran.
Seeing Tao Ran’s gaze fixed on Tang Fuzhi from the moment she entered the room, the nurse realized she was likely intruding, even without being told.
She quietly pushed her cart out of the ward.
Tao Ran gazed at Tang Fuzhi, who was sitting propped up in bed, and met her utterly unfamiliar gaze.
That look filled Tao Ran with a mix of elation and a faint sense of melancholy.
She was thrilled that Tang Fuzhi had forgotten everything, like a blank canvas ready for her to paint with new memories. Yet she also felt a pang of sadness that their shared past, once so intimate, now existed only in her own memory.
Then she heard Tang Fuzhi’s soft, sweet voice: “You are…”
The two simple words, brimming with confusion, confirmed that Tang Fuzhi had indeed forgotten her.
A faint smile curved Tao Ran’s lips as she tried to ignore the tightness in her chest and force herself to appear trustworthy, not like some kidnapper.
She stepped closer to Tang Fuzhi and said, “Tang Tang, don’t you remember? I’m your girlfriend—Tao Ran.”
As she spoke, Tao Ran leaned down slightly, her shoulder-length hair cascading forward with the movement. Her warm lips pressed against Tang Fuzhi’s forehead.
The gesture seemed utterly natural, but behind Tang Fuzhi’s back, Tao Ran’s fingertips were digging so hard into her index finger that the delicate skin turned faintly white. She couldn’t suppress the surging excitement in her heart.
Her lips pressed against Tang Fuzhi’s slightly cool forehead. After spending so much time in the hospital, Tang Fuzhi carried a faint, not unpleasant scent of disinfectant.
This was the first time Tao Ran had kissed Tang Fuzhi while she was conscious.
Afraid of arousing suspicion, Tao Ran didn’t linger.
The kiss was fleeting, but Tao Ran was already deeply satisfied.
As her lips parted from Tang Fuzhi’s forehead, Tao Ran carefully observed Tang Fuzhi’s expression, terrified of seeing any hint of repulsion in her eyes.
After all, to the Tang Fuzhi of the present, Tao Ran was just a stranger claiming to be her girlfriend.
Instinctively, Tang Fuzhi seemed to believe her, but seeing Tao Ran’s confident demeanor, she couldn’t help but retort, “Do you have any proof?”
Relieved to see no aversion in Tang Fuzhi’s eyes, Tao Ran exhaled softly. Facing her challenge, Tao Ran smiled, pulled out her phone, opened the photo album, and handed it to Tang Fuzhi.
Tang Fuzhi took the phone with a hint of confusion, only to discover it was filled with photos of her: solo shots, group photos, outings, study sessions together…
Each photo was timestamped, and Tang Fuzhi quickly scanned the timeline, realizing there was no way to fake them.
Seeing Tang Fuzhi was mostly convinced, Tao Ran pressed on, “Tang Fuzhi, born November 2nd, XXXX, 23 years old this year. Local to T City, a carnivore, and your favorite thing is junk food…”
As Tao Ran rattled off her preferences like a cherished list, Tang Fuzhi’s head began to spin. She quickly cut her off, any lingering doubt vanishing completely, though she stubbornly refused to admit it.
“I… I have amnesia. How am I supposed to know if you’re telling the truth or not?”
The girl’s amber eyes sparkled, and Tao Ran wondered if those soft, pink lips would feel as stubborn as the words they spoke.
Tao Ran raised an eyebrow, a hint of amusement flickering in her eyes. “That’s fine. We have plenty of time to prove whether I’m telling the truth or not.”
Then, she abruptly changed the subject. “If you still don’t believe me…”
Tao Ran adopted a thoughtful expression, as if genuinely stumped.
Tang Fuzhi couldn’t help the corner of her mouth twitching upward, feeling like she was about to win. Just as she was about to mercifully let Tao Ran off the hook, Tao Ran spoke again.
“You have a small mole right in the center of your chest.”
Tang Fuzhi couldn’t tell if Tao Ran was telling the truth, but under Tao Ran’s invasive gaze, she instinctively covered her chest, trying to block Tao Ran’s line of sight, her earlobes flushing slightly.
“You used to say it was proof of your grand ambitions,” Tao Ran said, stepping closer and reaching out as if to unbutton Tang Fuzhi’s collar. “I know you don’t remember, but that’s fine. We can verify it right here, right now.”
The woman was so close that a strand of her hair slipped from her shoulder, brushing against Tang Fuzhi’s nose. Tang Fuzhi could even catch the faint scent of shampoo on it, and she instinctively took a half-step back.
With the conversation having reached this point, Tang Fuzhi quickly begged for mercy, burying herself completely under the blanket, leaving only her amber eyes visible, terrified that Tao Ran would actually touch her. “No, no, I believe you now.”
Tao Ran flicked Tang Fuzhi’s exposed forehead with her index finger, the gesture intimate and natural, though she felt a twinge of regret.
Tang Fuzhi silently peeked her entire face out from under the blanket, looking somewhat awkward. “I have another question.”
Tao Ran nodded, signaling her to continue. Tang Fuzhi hesitated before asking, “Before I lost my memory, what was our relationship like?”
Even if Tao Ran didn’t answer, Tang Fuzhi could already guess that their relationship had been quite close, based on their brief interaction and what the nurse had said earlier.
But right now, she needed to confirm it herself, from the person involved, not just relying on what others said.
“What do you think?” Tao Ran didn’t answer, instead tossing the question back to Tang Fuzhi.
Tang Fuzhi had initially been seventy percent certain, but Tao Ran’s question made her suddenly feel less confident.
She pursed her lips, lowered her gaze, and ventured a tentative reply, “It should be pretty good, right?”
As she spoke, Tang Fuzhi kept her eyes fixed on Tao Ran, as if trying to read something in her expression.
But unfortunately, she couldn’t discern anything.
“We met in college,” Tao Ran said, her lashes lowering to conceal the fleeting glimmer in her eyes. “You fell for me the moment we met, and we were together within two months.”
The highest form of deception is seventy percent truth and thirty percent lies.
When they first met, Tang Fuzhi had shown great interest in her, but it was friendship, not romantic love. Still, that didn’t stop Tao Ran from deceiving the amnesiac Tang Fuzhi.
“When you think about it, we’ve been together for almost four years now,” Tao Ran said.
Tang Fuzhi was a little surprised but didn’t doubt Tao Ran’s words too much.
After all, she had felt a flutter of excitement the first time she saw Tao Ran. And purely based on appearances, Tao Ran perfectly matched her preferences.
If she felt this way even without any memories, it wasn’t impossible that her four-years-ago self had fallen in love with Tao Ran at first sight.
“And our relationship has always been wonderful,” Tao Ran added.
Tang Fuzhi nodded. Having asked the question that mattered most to her, her energy was nearly exhausted. She quietly burrowed under the covers, ready to drift back to sleep.
Tao Ran was about to sit beside the bed and wait for Tang Fuzhi to fall asleep when she felt a slightly cool touch on her wrist.
She glanced up and met Tang Fuzhi’s beautiful, slightly weary eyes.
“You…” Tang Fuzhi bit her lip, a little embarrassed. “Could you stay here with me? Until I fall asleep?”
Having lost her memories, everything here felt foreign to her. Though she didn’t show it, she was still a little uneasy.
Tao Ran was the only person here who felt familiar to her. Besides, Tao Ran herself had said they were girlfriends, and the nurse had mentioned how good Tao Ran was to her.
So, it wasn’t unreasonable for a couple to make requests of each other, especially since Tao Ran had just said their relationship was going well.
Tang Fuzhi thought to herself.
But when she saw the clear surprise on Tao Ran’s face after she made her request, a flicker of unease stirred within her.
Had she said something wrong? Or was Tao Ran’s claim of a good relationship just a casual remark?
Could it be that their relationship wasn’t actually that close?
As these thoughts swirled, Tang Fuzhi’s eyes dimmed slightly, and her voice betrayed a hint of disappointment. “If it’s inconvenient for you, then…” forget it.
Before she could finish, Tao Ran had already sat down beside her, taking her cold hand in hers. “Even if you hadn’t asked, I would have stayed. Now, get some sleep.”
The gentle smile on Tao Ran’s lips was reassuring.
Tang Fuzhi studied her carefully, making sure there was no hint of reluctance. Her lips curved into an unconscious smile as she closed her eyes and drifted off to sleep.
Tao Ran gazed at Tang Fuzhi’s pale face, her heart aching with tenderness.
But when Tao Ran recalled the dependent look in Tang Fuzhi’s eyes just moments ago, a hint of madness gradually crept into her own. If Tang Fuzhi could see Tao Ran like this, she would no longer doubt her feelings for her.
Despite her exhaustion, Tang Fuzhi’s breathing soon evened out, as if she had already fallen asleep. Only then did Tao Ran reach out to gently stroke her cheek.
The once slightly plump cheeks had become noticeably thinner after more than three months of lying in the hospital. Tao Ran felt a pang of heartache.
After gazing at Tang Fuzhi for an unknown length of time, Tao Ran finally withdrew her hand and left to find Zheng Xiaoxiao to get a clearer understanding of the situation.
“Based on our current observations, there’s still a chance she might recover her memories,” Zheng Xiaoxiao said with a hint of helplessness. “But whether it takes a week, a month, or even a year is impossible to predict.”
“If you truly want to keep her, you could try using medication to suppress her memory recovery.” As soon as the words left her mouth, Zheng Xiaoxiao regretted them, fearing Tao Ran might actually choose this path.
As a doctor guided by compassion, she knew such medication was far too risky. Moreover, as Tao Ran’s friend, she couldn’t bear to see her friend stray down such a dangerous path.
Fortunately, Tao Ran pursed her lips, recalling the feel of her lips against Tang Fuzhi’s forehead during their earlier kiss, and the fragile expression on Tang Fuzhi’s face when she had gripped Tao Ran’s wrist. “No, I don’t need it.”
How could she possibly give Tang Fuzhi a drug with such uncertain safety?
If, if Tang Fuzhi ever truly regained her memories…
Tao Ran closed her eyes, unwilling to speculate on the consequences.
