I Fall Every Time I Meet an Alpha [Transmigrated into a Book] - Chapter 71 (END)
In the world of the book, the male lead Meng Yuzhou and the female lead Zhong Xiaoxiao ended up with a happy ending.
They got married and even had children.
At first, Zhong Xiaoxiao didn’t want to have children, she thought childbirth was terrifying.
“Be good, just one,” someone coaxed her.
Zhong Xiaoxiao was so thoroughly persuaded that, in a moment of impulsiveness, she gave birth. And not just one, two.
“What’s going on, Meng Yuqing?” Zhong Xiaoxiao still called him by his old name. “I’ve already had two kids, why haven’t I gone back yet?”
“Ah, let me ask the system,” Meng Yuqing said with a soft laugh, seeing her agitation. “Actually, staying here isn’t so bad. We’re married now. And we have children.”
“Not bad? How is this not bad?” To Zhong Xiaoxiao, no matter how good it seemed, it was still just the world of a book, it wasn’t real.
“Mama~” The older daughter ran over and hugged her leg. “Up, up~”
Seeing the chubby little figure, Zhong Xiaoxiao’s heart melted again. She bent down and scooped the child up, asking, “Mama will play with you, okay?”
“Okay, okay~” The child clapped her hands in delight.
Zhong Xiaoxiao carried the child off to play, while Meng Yuqing watched them, his face full of happiness.
For the rest of their lives, happiness enveloped this family.
(And so, the story in the book came to an end.)
Zhong Xiaoxiao was holding her child when she suddenly heard a familiar ringtone from her phone. Her heart jolted violently.
Following the sound, she searched for its source.
Amidst the flowers lay a blue phone, ringing with the song “Alive” both uplifting and sorrowful, like fate itself urging her on.
Zhong Xiaoxiao’s emotions surged uncontrollably. She set the child down and walked over, bending to pick up the phone.
The phone was face-down. When Zhong Xiaoxiao lifted it, the screen emitted an intense, blinding light, a light that carried a powerful force, yanking her violently inward.
“Mama~” Her older daughter was still calling for her.
Zhong Xiaoxiao turned back just in time to see Meng Yuqing sprinting toward her from a distance, her daughter stretching out her arms, begging to be held…
Before Zhong Xiaoxiao could say anything, the phone’s light dragged her in, and her consciousness plunged into darkness.
Zhong Xiaoxiao jolted awake. Outside, the sun was bright, and her phone was ringing the same song, “Alive.” Instinctively, she got up and went to her desk, answering the call. A woman’s furious voice came through: “Zhong Xiaoxiao! What time is it? Why aren’t you at work yet? If you don’t want the job, just say so!”
“Yes, yes, I’m sorry! I’m on my way now!” Zhong Xiaoxiao checked the time, it was already 9 a.m.
She hurriedly washed up, got dressed, and left for work.
On the subway, passing through the dim tunnel, Zhong Xiaoxiao caught her reflection in the window. That face, it looked the same, yet somehow different.
Her experiences in the book were still vivid in her mind, dreamlike and surreal. But in the real world, only half a night had passed.
It was now August 20, 2021, 9:30 a.m.
She pulled out her phone. The screen was ordinary no blinding light, nothing pulling her in. It was as if everything that had happened was just an unusually vivid dream.
Meng Yuqing…
Zhong Xiaoxiao silently repeated the name in her heart. And her two children.
Unbelievably, while still single in the real world, she had already become a mother of two in the book.
They had all stayed behind in the world of the book, the children had lost their mother, Meng Yuqing had lost her beloved. An inexplicable emotion coiled around her heart, and as longing surged, Zhong Xiaoxiao’s eyes brimmed with tears. Unable to withstand the flood, they finally overflowed.
Zhong Xiaoxiao crouched down in sorrow, hugging her head as she sobbed loudly.
The passengers in the train car were startled by her. Many voices buzzed around her, but she didn’t register a single word.
What should she do? What should she do?
Why had she gone to pick up that phone? Why had she picked up that damned phone! If she hadn’t, she would still be there, with her family, happy and harmonious. Now everything was gone because of her foolishness, she had torn a family apart!
Zhong Xiaoxiao was overwhelmed with regret. Never in her life had she felt such remorse.
Turns out, she hadn’t truly wanted to return to the real world that badly.
While in the book, she had longed day and night to come back to reality. But now that she was back, she found herself desperately missing the world within the book, missing her beloved, missing her children.
Zhong Xiaoxiao trudged into the office in a daze, her spirit utterly drained, like a frost-bitten eggplant. The department manager called her in and berated her mercilessly. After a while, he seemed to notice her unusual state her reddened eyes, the traces of tears and softened slightly. “What’s wrong with you? Are you sick?” Even the harsh manager couldn’t help but show a sliver of sympathy. “If you’re sick, just take leave. Health comes first.”
That tiny bit of kindness from the manager made Zhong Xiaoxiao’s tears spill again, pattering down so profusely that even the manager grew unbearably awkward.
As she stepped out, she overheard two colleagues at the neighboring desks gossiping. “Hey, a new hire is joining today. Heard she’s really pretty.”
“Really?”
“Yeah, seriously gorgeous!”
Zhong Xiaoxiao paid no attention, keeping her head down as she walked, only to bump into someone. The person steadied her.
When Zhong Xiaoxiao looked up, the youthful face of Meng Yuqing filled her vision. Those phoenix eyes gazed at her with warmth, making her heart pound violently. “Meng, ” she nearly blurted out in excitement.
But Meng Yuqing looked at her as if they were strangers. “Are you okay?”
“Oh.” Hearing that voice both familiar and distant Zhong Xiaoxiao snapped back to reality. “I’m fine,” she replied.
Meng Yuqing gave her a nod before walking away. Zhong Xiaoxiao couldn’t help but turn to watch her, her eyes following, unable to look away.
Was this the 23-year-old Meng Yuqing?
So beautiful. So young, so full of vitality. Compared to her, Zhong Xiaoxiao felt like a withered old woman.
She had originally planned to take leave and go home to rest, but now she changed her mind. Returning to her desk, she began asking around about the new hire.
“Graduated from a top-tier university!” someone boasted, eager to share the latest scoop. “No idea what she sees in this dump of a company, though. What a waste of talent…”
“Young, beautiful, highly educated and apparently from a well-off family too. So envious.”
“We’ll be colleagues from now on. Plenty of time to get to know her.”
“Hey, don’t you think that beauty seems a bit aloof?”
“No, I think she’s quite approachable,” Zhong Xiaoxiao couldn’t help but retort to the person who called Meng Yuqing cold.
After speaking up, she felt she’d overreacted. It was just casual conversation, why take it so seriously?
Meng Yuqing probably didn’t even remember her.
Unable to focus on work, Zhong Xiaoxiao took out her phone again and opened that novel, skipping straight to the ending.
The finale read:
Zhong Xiaoxiao carried the child out to play while Meng Yuzhou watched them with a face full of happiness.
For the rest of their lives, happiness enveloped this family.
And so the story concluded.
Zhong Xiaoxiao felt indescribably conflicted, as if that Zhong Xiaoxiao was both her and not her. The book said “for the rest of their lives, happiness enveloped this family” didn’t that mean her return actually had no impact? Because the story ended before she took the child to the garden. In the book, they were a happy family, and what came after wouldn’t happen.
Zhong Xiaoxiao’s thoughts were getting tangled.
If the author said it was a happy ending, then it was a happy ending, no need to doubt it.
She comforted her restless heart with this “HE.”
Soon she saw Meng Yuqing emerge from the manager’s office, pass by her workstation, and head toward the elevator.
Seeing this, Zhong Xiaoxiao instinctively stood and followed.
But once she caught up, she didn’t know what to say.
If Meng Yuqing didn’t recognize her, wouldn’t her clinging seem… inappropriate? Yet her body had moved before her mind could stop it. She just had to follow, her eyes irresistibly drawn to her.
Meng Yuqing entered the elevator; Zhong Xiaoxiao followed. Meng Yuqing went downstairs; Zhong Xiaoxiao followed.
Meng Yuqing walked ahead; Zhong Xiaoxiao trailed behind.
Suddenly, Meng Yuqing stopped and turned to look at her, chuckling softly. “Zhong Xiaoxiao, how long are you planning to follow me?”
That fond, exasperated voice stunned Zhong Xiaoxiao. She stared fixedly at her. An invisible world seemed to stretch between them as people came and went around them. Across mountains and rivers, Zhong Xiaoxiao gazed at the person on the other side. After a long moment, her lips finally moved. “Do… do you remember me?”
Meng Yuqing reached out to her and called, “Come here.”
“Meng Yuqing!” At the sight of her, Zhong Xiaoxiao couldn’t hold back her excitement and cried out before running toward her.
Running toward her happiness.
(The End)

Meng Yuqing: I came back. The system sent me back.
Zhong Xiaoxiao: Are the children okay?
Meng Yuqing: They’re fine.
Zhong Xiaoxiao: Then… can you live past 28 in this world?
