I Fall Every Time I Meet an Alpha [Transmigrated into a Book] - Chapter 68
Under Zhong Xiaoxiao’s life-or-death ultimatum, Zhong Yuanyuan ultimately relented.
The two families met for a meal and settled the engagement arrangements.
Zhong Yuanyuan still felt uneasy about it, but with things having progressed this far, she had no choice but to compromise. She firmly insisted that marriage should only happen after university coincidentally, the other party shared the same view, making it a perfect agreement.
Seeing the matter finally settled, Zhong Xiaoxiao secretly breathed a sigh of relief. She glanced at Meng Yuqing across the dining table, hoping she would keep her promise to protect her.
Meng Yuqing met her gaze and winked.
Zhong Xiaoxiao’s heartbeat faltered at the gesture.
What was that? Why was she flirting with her?
The male lead also looked over, but Zhong Xiaoxiao pretended not to notice and quickly lowered her head.
Meng Yuzhou assumed she was just shy and didn’t dwell on it. After the engagement, she would be his fiancée. The thought filled him with satisfaction and sweetness.
Before the engagement date could be finalized, school started again.
Zhong Xiaoxiao returned to her ordinary high school, finding it rather dull. Having no interest in relearning high school material, she secretly read novels in class. The teachers here mostly lectured from the podium, rarely patrolling the classroom. Those who wanted to listen could, while those who didn’t were expected to stay quiet and not disturb others.
Zhong Xiaoxiao opened her thirtieth novel and immersed herself in it, completely absorbed, oblivious to her surroundings.
After class, as she stepped out of the school, a luxury car pulled up in front of her. Before Zhong Xiaoxiao could react in surprise, the window rolled down, revealing Meng Yuzhou’s face. Meng Yuqing was there too.
“Get in,” Meng Yuzhou said, stepping out of the car and ushering her inside.
“…” What was going on? Did they really come all this way just to pick her up?
This high school was on the opposite side of the city from Yinglan High, Meng Yuzhou had practically driven halfway across town.
Once inside the car, seated on the semicircular sofa, Zhong Xiaoxiao found herself at a loss for words with the Meng siblings.
“Let’s go grab a meal together,” Meng Yuzhou suggested gently, looking at her.
“Okay,” Zhong Xiaoxiao replied. “I’ll call my mom first.”
With that, she dialed Zhong Yuanyuan right in front of them. Though her mother wasn’t thrilled, she didn’t outright object.
For now, Zhong Xiaoxiao didn’t have the energy to worry about her mother’s feelings. After hanging up, she turned to the siblings and asked, “Where are we eating?”
“How about Mingyue Pavilion?” Meng Yuzhou said. “Unless you have a better suggestion?”
“Mingyue Pavilion it is,” Zhong Xiaoxiao agreed. She had been there before the food was decent, but the prices were shockingly high. Since she wasn’t paying, there was no reason to refuse. Might as well enjoy it. She treated the whole thing like a dream, free food was free food.
Meng Yuqing, hearing her thoughts, chuckled softly.
Zhong Xiaoxiao saw her laugh and immediately knew she was laughing at her. Damn it, why did she have to have mind-reading abilities? There was no hiding anything from her!
At Mingyue Pavilion, as luck would have it, they ran into Gan Qingyun and Du Lingyan.
All of them were waiting for the elevator, leading to an awkward encounter at the elevator doors.
Gan Qingyun’s gaze instinctively fixed on Meng Yuzhou the moment she saw him. Noticing this, Du Lingyan felt displeased and couldn’t resist provoking him. “Bringing your little girlfriend out for dinner?”
Hearing her words, Gan Qingyun’s eyes immediately shifted to Zhong Xiaoxiao.
“Yes,” Meng Yuzhou said with a faint, mocking smile, showing no warmth toward Du Lingyan. “My fiancée.”
The words “my fiancée” struck Gan Qingyun like a bomb dropped into a tranquil lake, shattering her heart into pieces. Her mind buzzed with chaos.
Meng Yuzhou glanced meaningfully at Gan Qingyun and delivered the words that crushed her soul: “Since we’ve known each other, I’ll invite both of you to witness the ceremony when the engagement happens.”
Zhong Xiaoxiao’s heart pounded beside them, sensing that Meng Yuzhou was poking a hornet’s nest. She couldn’t help but observe Gan Qingyun’s expression, the utter devastation on her face was heartbreaking. Zhong Xiaoxiao thought to herself, If you like him so much, you can have him. I don’t even want him anyway.
But such is love, when the one you adore doesn’t return your feelings, it becomes a lifetime of mutual torment.
The elevator arrived, and Du Lingyan pulled Gan Qingyun inside first, followed closely by Li Shiting, Xie Baojun, Fang Yu, and Wang Sicheng. The six of them maintained an awkward distance, filling the spacious elevator to the brim.
Meng Yuqing curled her lips slightly. “Let’s wait for the next one,” she said.
There were three elevators. After Du Lingyan and the others entered, the doors closed. Another elevator arrived shortly after, and Zhong Xiaoxiao stepped in with the siblings.
Zhong Xiaoxiao felt uneasy about what had just happened, worried that the group might come after her. Even though her current school was far from Yinglan High, distance meant nothing if someone was determined to cause trouble.
When they went up to dine, they didn’t run into them again. Zhong Xiaoxiao quietly sighed in relief.
The Moonlight Pavilion had multiple restaurant floors, each with a different specialty. Zhong Xiaoxiao and the others chose the sixteenth floor for Cantonese cuisine. Their table was by the window, where the night had fallen outside, and the city lights twinkled like stars mirrored on earth.
Meng Yuzhou thoughtfully asked about Zhong Xiaoxiao’s preferences before ordering, then had the dishes served promptly.
What should have been a grand romantic date was now brightly illuminated by Meng Yuqing’s presence. She didn’t mind, and Meng Yuzhou, not wanting to make Zhong Xiaoxiao uncomfortable, didn’t ask his sister to leave. So here they were dating with a chaperone.
“The date’s been set,” Meng Yuzhou said, looking at Zhong Xiaoxiao. He was referring to the engagement. “Next month.”
“Oh,” Zhong Xiaoxiao murmured, glancing at him briefly before lowering her gaze.
“The details can be left to them to sort out.” Meng Yuzhou didn’t care much for the arrangements he just wanted to marry Zhong Xiaoxiao, not deal with the hassle.
When the food arrived, Meng Yuzhou served Zhong Xiaoxiao first, urging her to eat.
Meng Yuqing remained quiet beside them, composed and unbothered. Seeing her calm demeanor, Zhong Xiaoxiao gradually relaxed. With her here, nothing bad will happen, she reassured herself.
After a peaceful meal, they descended only to run into Du Lingyan and her group again. Two elevators stopped simultaneously on the first floor, one carrying six people, the other three. Fate really has a cruel sense of humor.
“Oh, I haven’t congratulated you yet,” Du Lingyan said upon seeing Meng Yuzhou. She draped an arm around Gan Qingyun and spoke in a breezy tone, “Congratulations, Meng Yuzhou. Finally winning the beauty’s heart~”
“Thanks,” Meng Yuzhou replied curtly, disliking Du Lingyan’s flippant attitude. He quickly led Zhong Xiaoxiao and Meng Yuqing away.
The group watched them leave. Gan Qingyun’s heart bled with resentment as she saw not a single glance spared for her in Meng Yuzhou’s eyes.
She had always thought that with Zhong Xiaoxiao transferring schools, her biggest worry was gone. There was still a year left, she would make Meng Yuzhou change his mind.
But now, they were actually getting engaged! Actually getting engaged!
How could she not hate it? She was trapped in her unrequited love for Meng Yuzhou, unable to free herself. She let that jealous resentment grip her tightly, gradually losing her rationality.
When Du Lingyan was taking Gan Qingyun home, Gan Qingyun said to her, “I don’t want to see them together.”
“What do you want to do about it?” Du Lingyan pulled her closer and asked.
The two sat in the backseat of the car, Du Lingyan’s face leaning in so close it was almost buried in Gan Qingyun’s neck. Gan Qingyun pushed her away slightly, lowering her voice as she said, “Help me one more time.”
“What’s in it for me if I help you?” Du Lingyan lightly nipped her ear and whispered, “Qingyun, stop liking him, okay? Like me instead. I’ll treat you well…”
“But you’re not an Alpha,” Gan Qingyun’s words stabbed at Du Lingyan’s heart like a knife. “I only like Alphas.”
“If I became an Alpha, would you like me then?” Du Lingyan stared at her, her expression cooling.
“By getting a sex-change surgery?” Gan Qingyun sneered. “That’s just perverted. Don’t you find it disgusting?”
“If you insist on liking that disgusting thing, then I’ll just have to endure it,” Du Lingyan grabbed her own hair, mocking.
“I don’t like people who’ve had sex changes. I find it repulsive.”
Gan Qingyun had practically shut down any possibility between her and Du Lingyan, which infuriated Du Lingyan. “Then figure it out yourself. I don’t want to help you anymore.”
