I Fall Every Time I Meet an Alpha [Transmigrated into a Book] - Chapter 67
Zhong Xiaoxiao stared at Meng Yuqing for a long time before suddenly saying, “Why aren’t you Meng Yuzhou?”
The question caught Meng Yuqing off guard. She looked at Zhong Xiaoxiao, whose eyes held complex emotions resentment, unwillingness, helplessness, hope, and pleading. But there was no trace of love.
“Do you wish I were Meng Yuzhou?” Meng Yuqing asked softly, her voice so quiet Zhong Xiaoxiao almost missed it. She continued, “Why?”
“Marrying you would be more acceptable to me,” Zhong Xiaoxiao replied. “Aren’t you an Alpha?”
“Oh,” Meng Yuqing responded quietly, choosing not to mention that she had already transformed from an Alpha to a Beta.
The concept of Alphas didn’t really hold much meaning for Zhong Xiaoxiao. Knowing that Meng Yuqing wasn’t truly Meng Yuqing eased her wariness.
Since they were both outsiders in this world, and Meng Yuqing had promised to take her back, Zhong Xiaoxiao found herself unconsciously drawn to her. She recalled all the moments they had shared since arriving in this world, and for some reason, the memory of Meng Yuqing pretending to be Meng Yuzhou flashed through her mind. They had even kissed.
“Why don’t you become Meng Yuzhou?” Zhong Xiaoxiao asked, eyeing her waist-length hair. A bold idea formed in her mind: if the female lead and the villainous female supporting character could change, why couldn’t Meng Yuzhou? What harm would it do if he changed too?
Meng Yuqing was startled by the suggestion. Deep down, she had entertained the same thought, she wished she could be Meng Yuzhou, wished she could deceive the system and switch identities. But she knew the system would never allow it.
“What are you saying?” Meng Yuqing chuckled. “You’re my sister-in-law. Are you suddenly interested in your sister-in-law? That’s quite the bold taste.”
Seeing her laugh at the idea, Zhong Xiaoxiao dropped the notion. If she didn’t want to, fine. Being a sister-in-law wasn’t so bad, she thought.
“You promised to protect me,” Zhong Xiaoxiao reminded her bluntly. “I don’t want to have an inappropriate relationship with an eighteen-year-old kid.”
“Yes, I promised,” Meng Yuqing replied, her gaze lingering on Zhong Xiaoxiao with an unreadable emotion.
Meeting her eyes, Zhong Xiaoxiao’s heart inexplicably raced.
A charged atmosphere grew between them. Zhong Xiaoxiao averted her gaze, her ears warming under Meng Yuqing’s unwavering stare, which burned so intensely she couldn’t lift her head.
Just as the tension peaked, Zhong Xiaoxiao’s phone rang loudly, startling her so much she nearly jumped.
She glanced at the screen, it was her mother calling. Without answering, she hung up.
“You should go back first,” Zhong Xiaoxiao said to Meng Yuqing. “Don’t rush to propose yet. I need to stand my ground with my mom for a couple of days. Once she softens, I’ll let you, let your family know.”
“Alright,” Meng Yuqing stood up, while Zhong Xiaoxiao remained seated on the bed.
Seeing her so docile, Meng Yuqing couldn’t resist reaching out to pat her head gently. “I’ll go now,” she murmured.
“Mm,” Zhong Xiaoxiao acknowledged, watching as Meng Yuqing turned away.
A pale blue halo appeared before Meng Yuqing, with blue flames flickering within. As Meng Yuqing stepped forward, the halo contracted until it vanished completely.
Zhong Xiaoxiao blinked, and the room was empty again.
Meng Yuqing’s visit felt like a dream to Zhong Xiaoxiao.
She stood dazed for a while, lost in thought. She wondered what the real-world Meng Yuqing was like at 23, she must have just graduated from university while Zhong Xiaoxiao was 26.
For some reason, fragmented images flashed through Zhong Xiaoxiao’s mind like the time she and Meng Yuqing had kissed in a bathroom. She remembered her body melting, limp as water, while Meng Yuqing held her with an amused, unreadable look in her eyes. Zhong Xiaoxiao hadn’t pushed her away in the end.
Then it hit her something was off between her and Meng Yuqing. Was it because of AO attraction? It had to be.
The ABO setting was downright shameless.
Zhong Xiaoxiao convinced herself using the ABO logic.
Outside, Zhong Yuanyuan grew restless when Zhong Xiaoxiao locked herself in the room without a sound, ignoring her calls. Not seeing her daughter made Zhong Yuanyuan anxious, but she was still too angry to speak gently just yet.
She took a few days off work to keep watch at home.
On the first day, Zhong Yuanyuan decided to let her go hungry, a little punishment.
Meng Yuqing, aware that Zhong Xiaoxiao was locked in without food or water, came to bring her something to eat. She even invited her to her own room to hang out.
Zhong Xiaoxiao found it amusing like teleporting from one place to another in an instant.
Meng Yuqing’s room was spacious, bright, and pristine, much like her cool yet undeniably noble.
Meng Yuqing told the maid she was hungry and had food brought to her room. Soon, the maid arrived with a tray.
Zhong Xiaoxiao ate, drank, and relaxed there. Aside from being unable to leave, everything was fine.
Her impression of Meng Yuqing improved significantly, and she began relying on her wholeheartedly.
Meng Yuqing enjoyed this dependence. She felt that, at last, she and Zhong Xiaoxiao were growing closer.
After eating and chatting about the real world and future plans, Zhong Xiaoxiao still worried about her mother, what if she barged in and panicked when she couldn’t find her? After a while, she said she should return.
Meng Yuqing escorted her back, and in a blink, they moved from Meng Yuqing’s room to Zhong Xiaoxiao’s.
The hallway was silent. Zhong Xiaoxiao whispered, “I think she’s about to crack.” She was banking on her mother’s love so strong that she would eventually give in.
Half a day later, Zhong Yuanyuan finally snapped. Unable to get Zhong Xiaoxiao to respond, she feared something had happened inside. She called a locksmith to break the door open.
When the door swung open, Zhong Xiaoxiao was asleep on the bed.
Zhong Yuanyuan rushed to her side in alarm, calling out, “Xiaoxiao!” Her voice was frantic, laced with panic.
The shout startled Zhong Xiaoxiao awake, her heart pounding.
She opened her eyes and saw Zhong Yuanyuan, instantly setting off alarm bells in her mind her mother had finally broken in after all!
Zhong Xiaoxiao bit her lower lip, her face full of grievance, squeezing out a few tears as she sobbed dramatically to Zhong Yuanyuan, “Mom, I’ve let you down. I’ve ruined my reputation. Just leave me alone, let me die. What’s the point of living when I’m just a… a worthless woman anyway…”
“What nonsense are you spouting?!” Zhong Yuanyuan was tempted to slap her.
Noticing the locksmith was still present, Zhong Yuanyuan shot Zhong Xiaoxiao a warning glare. “We’ll settle this later.” Then she stood up to pay the locksmith and see them out.
Zhong Xiaoxiao remained uneasy in Zhong Yuanyuan’s presence her fear of this fierce woman ran bone-deep. Against sheer intimidation, no tricks would work.
When Zhong Yuanyuan returned, she studied her daughter on the bed. Perhaps still groggy from sleep, Zhong Xiaoxiao looked dazed, her eyes pitiful like an abandoned kitten.
“Are you hungry? Eat first,” Zhong Yuanyuan called to her.
“I’m not hungry.” Zhong Xiaoxiao truly wasn’t, she had stuffed herself at Meng Yuqing’s place.
Assuming she was still sulking, Zhong Yuanyuan ignored her and went straight to the kitchen to bring out food, urging her to eat.
With no appetite, Zhong Xiaoxiao forced down a few bites under her mother’s watchful gaze. Seeing her pick at the food halfheartedly, Zhong Yuanyuan couldn’t help but worry. In the end, she could never truly resist Zhong Xiaoxiao this daughter was her lifeline. If anything happened to her, she wouldn’t want to live either.
Irritated by her lack of interest in the meal, Zhong Yuanyuan snapped, “If you don’t want to eat, then don’t.”
“Okay.” Zhong Xiaoxiao sullenly set down her chopsticks, waiting for what came next.
“What did their family say?” Zhong Yuanyuan got to the main point. “Engagement first, then marriage after college?”
“Yeah.” Zhong Xiaoxiao answered softly.
