I Fall Every Time I Meet an Alpha [Transmigrated into a Book] - Chapter 65
Zhong Xiaoxiao stared at Madam Zhong in terror, waiting for her to explode.
Madam Zhong exploded. “What were you thinking? Huh? How old are you, and you’re already thinking about marriage? What have you been learning in school? Tell me, what have you been learning? I didn’t raise you for nothing!”
“You didn’t raise me for nothing.” Zhong Xiaoxiao tried to argue, but Zhong Yuanyuan cut her off. “What do you mean, ‘not for nothing’?!”
Zhong Yuanyuan’s voice was sharp and harsh, aggressive and domineering. Zhong Xiaoxiao’s heart pounded wildly, terrified that this woman might suddenly lunge at her and start hitting her.
“I won’t allow it!” Zhong Yuanyuan vehemently opposed. Seeing Zhong Xiaoxiao’s frightened expression, she tried to soften her tone, appealing to reason and emotion. “Mom isn’t saying you can never get married, but you’re still too young.”
“It’s just an engagement, not marriage yet.” Zhong Xiaoxiao mustered the courage to argue. “He said we could wait until college to, you know.”
“Oh, Zhong Xiaoxiao! I really underestimated you,” Zhong Yuanyuan fumed, her head buzzing with anger. For a moment, she wished she could shove her back into the womb to spare herself this rage. “I even transferred you to a new school, and you’re still in contact with people from back there! I asked you in the elevator, and you said you didn’t like him. What’s going on now? Huh? Did your brain get crushed by a door, or did water get in there? Explain yourself!”
“We’ve already done everything we were supposed to.” Zhong Xiaoxiao dropped another bombshell. “Back in the countryside.”
“Y-you, what did you say?!” The words made Zhong Yuanyuan leap to her feet. “You little, you little!” Her eyes darted around, searching for something to hit her with. She quickly grabbed a feather duster and charged at Zhong Xiaoxiao. “You disgrace! I’ll beat you to death today! I swear I’ll beat you to death!”
Seeing Zhong Yuanyuan rush for the feather duster, Zhong Xiaoxiao jumped up in alarm. When she saw the woman charging at her with murderous intent, she shrieked, Oh god! She’s really going to hit me! She quickly dodged around the dining table, putting distance between herself and the woman hellbent on beating her to death, then bolted to her room and frantically locked the door. Her heart was about to leap out of her chest.
That was way too dangerous! She really looked like she wanted to kill her!
“Open this door!” Zhong Yuanyuan banged on the door furiously. “Zhong Xiaoxiao, get out here! If you have the guts to say what you’ve been doing outside, then have the guts to face me!”
Zhong Xiaoxiao watched as the door shook under the pounding, genuinely terrified. Was this door sturdy enough? Would it hold?
“Come out! Hiding in your room won’t solve anything!” Zhong Yuanyuan continued to rant outside. “I gave birth to you, raised you, just so you could learn this kind of trash? Was it easy raising you? You’re barely an adult and already want to get married! Do you think marriage is easy? You’ll suffer plenty! Mom only wants what’s best for you, why won’t you listen? Is your brain full of water? Huh? What the hell are you thinking all day?”
Zhong Xiaoxiao found the noise unbearable. Zhong Yuanyuan’s scolding was downright vicious. She covered her ears and flopped onto the bed.
What should she do now? Lying on the bed, Zhong Xiaoxiao thought. There was no way she could face her mother’s overwhelming fury right now, it was too terrifying.
She lay there with her ears covered for a long time before finally letting go. The noise outside had stopped. She listened carefully, no more commotion.
Then her phone buzzed. A message had come in.
Zhong Xiaoxiao took the phone and saw it was an unfamiliar number.
[Heard you’re getting married. Congratulations.]
Upon seeing the number, Zhong Xiaoxiao realized it wasn’t entirely unfamiliar, it was Meng Yuqing’s.
The moment she realized it was from Meng Yuqing, that congratulatory message became deeply ironic.
After all, she was the villainous female supporting character. Going to her household probably wouldn’t be pleasant, Zhong Xiaoxiao thought.
At this point, there was no turning back. She could only brace herself and move forward.
Only by marrying into that family could she figure out the direction of the story and perhaps, by some twist of fate, find her missing phone.
If she remained passive, she might end up growing old in this world.
She didn’t know how much time had passed in the real world while she was stuck in the book. Were the timelines synchronized? The thought of never escaping filled her with despair, like a free bird trapped in a cage. Or worse, what if she finally got out decades later, only to find everyone she knew had already died? That was equally terrifying.
In any case, Zhong Xiaoxiao was desperate to do something now.
She couldn’t just sit and wait for fate to decide.
Before she could reply, Meng Yuqing called.
Zhong Xiaoxiao hung up once, but then a message came through: [Pick up.] The call came again.
Annoyed, Zhong Xiaoxiao answered. “Hello?”
“Finally decided to answer?” Meng Yuqing’s soft, slightly mocking voice came through the phone.
“Is there something you need?” Zhong Xiaoxiao kept her tone polite but distant. Meng Yuqing frowned slightly at that. “Oh? You’re about to become my sister-in-law, and you’re this cold to me?”
“Nothing’s set in stone yet,” Zhong Xiaoxiao thought. I’m not about to suck up to you.
“How is it not set in stone? Isn’t my brother just waiting to propose?” Meng Yuqing chuckled.
“Don’t come now,” Zhong Xiaoxiao grumbled. “I told my mom, and she flew into a rage, even tried to hit me. Luckily, I ran fast. Otherwise, I’d be done for.”
Though the situation was unfortunate, the way Zhong Xiaoxiao described it made it oddly amusing. Meng Yuqing laughed. “So you ran away?”
“No, I’m in my room. Door’s locked.”
“Are you planning to resist your mom until you successfully marry my brother?”
“What else can I do?”
Meng Yuqing fell silent for a moment, her smile fading. “Why the sudden rush to marry him? Weren’t you still studying?”
“No reason,” Zhong Xiaoxiao didn’t feel like explaining the deeper cause. “I’m eighteen. It’s time to find an Alpha.”
“You want to return to your original world, don’t you?” Meng Yuqing’s lips curled slightly. “I know, you’re desperate.”
“W-what did you say?” Zhong Xiaoxiao jolted upright on the bed, her expression turning deadly serious. “How do you know? How do you know I’m not from this world?”
“Because I’m not either.” Meng Yuqing finally felt a sliver of relief. She had tossed a stone into the pond, watching the ripples unsettle the other, and now she was ready to walk away. “Alright, I’ll hang up now.”
“Wait!” Zhong Xiaoxiao’s mind buzzed, barely able to process anything. The absurdity of everything had left her numb, but Meng Yuqing’s words suddenly made it all feel real. “Let’s talk.”
“Sure,” Meng Yuqing agreed readily. “We can talk however you like.”
Meng Yuqing! The system, having overheard the conversation between Meng Yuqing and Zhong Xiaoxiao, was a bit angry: What exactly are you trying to do? Why did you tell her all this? Why stir up unnecessary trouble? She’s about to marry the male lead, and now you pull this stunt are you itching for a beating?
Meng Yuqing: Calm down. If I tell her I’m not from this world, she’ll definitely trust me. Then, when I explain that the story’s plot is for her to marry my brother, she’ll surely listen.
System 666: Are you sure?
Meng Yuqing: Positive.
The system hesitated, as this was somewhat beyond its understanding. Seeing how confident Meng Yuqing sounded, it decided to trust her for now: Don’t lie to me, or you know the consequences.
Meng Yuqing: When have I ever lied to you?
The system thought about it and realized she hadn’t, so it believed her.
Meanwhile, Zhong Xiaoxiao’s emotions were in turmoil for a long time. Meng Yuqing’s words were like a massive boulder thrown into the tranquil lake of her heart, creating a thunderous splash and stirring up towering waves.
Meng Yuqing, she wasn’t from this world either! She wasn’t!
That meant, she wasn’t the real villainous female supporting character!
No wonder!
Zhong Xiaoxiao recalled all the moments she had spent with Meng Yuqing. She often had this nagging feeling that Meng Yuqing wasn’t so bad, but then she’d remember she was the villainous female supporting character and assume it was all an act.
Now! That feeling turned out to be true! She really wasn’t bad, she wasn’t the villainous female supporting character!
She wasn’t from this world!
