I Fall Every Time I Meet an Alpha [Transmigrated into a Book] - Chapter 63
The system had once again shortened the time the male and female leads were separated.
On the day Zhong Xiaoxiao returned from the countryside, she spotted Meng Yuzhou downstairs. He was like a lingering ghost.
Zhong Xiaoxiao pretended not to see him and headed straight upstairs, but Meng Yuzhou walked toward her anyway. Catching him in her peripheral vision, her heart pounded wildly. Her mother was right beside her, don’t come over here! Obviously, Zhong Yuanyuan had noticed him too, giving her daughter a meaningful glance but saying nothing.
“Zhong Xiaoxiao,” Meng Yuzhou called out as he approached.
“Oh, Class President! What a coincidence running into you here…” Zhong Xiaoxiao pretended she had just noticed him and greeted him.
The atmosphere turned awkward instantly. Zhong Xiaoxiao felt her scalp tingle.
“Is this… Xiaoxiao’s brother?” Zhong Yuanyuan asked, displeased as she watched him approach.
“Yeah, Mom. He’s Meng Yuqing’s older brother, Meng Yuzhou,” Zhong Xiaoxiao introduced, then turned to Meng Yuzhou, “This is my mom.”
“Hello, Auntie,” Meng Yuzhou greeted politely, even bowing.
“Oh my,” Zhong Yuanyuan felt a bit overwhelmed by his formality. “No need to be so polite, child…”
She studied him carefully. He had a handsome face, but who knew what schemes he had in mind? The thoughts of teenage boys and girls, who didn’t understand them?
Zhong Yuanyuan didn’t want her daughter marrying so young, so she wasn’t keen on them spending time together. She said to Meng Yuzhou, “Here to visit? Unfortunately, Xiaoxiao just got back from the countryside. She must be exhausted from the trip and needs to rest. You go ahead and enjoy yourself. We’ll be heading up now.”
Zhong Xiaoxiao nodded vigorously at her mother’s words. “I really am tired.”
“Then go rest,” Meng Yuzhou said to her, his eyes glued to her, refusing to look away.
“Oh, okay. Bye, Class President.” Zhong Xiaoxiao finally escaped, secretly relieved.
Zhong Yuanyuan led her daughter into the elevator, and even from a distance, they could still see him standing there, watching them.
“What’s his deal?” Zhong Yuanyuan began interrogating Zhong Xiaoxiao as soon as the elevator doors closed.
“Uh…” Zhong Xiaoxiao’s eyes darted around before she said, “This is why I said we should move. I told you there was danger at home, but you didn’t believe me.”
“The danger you meant was him?” Zhong Yuanyuan finally understood.
“An Alpha, isn’t that dangerous?” Zhong Xiaoxiao gestured downward. “He followed the scent here.”
“He likes you, but you don’t like him?” Zhong Yuanyuan asked bluntly.
“Yeah,” Zhong Xiaoxiao answered simply, then added, “Right now, studies come first. We’re still students.”
“You’re absolutely right. I support you.” Zhong Yuanyuan felt relieved hearing her daughter say that. She had been worried her grown-up daughter might not listen to her anymore. Who knew her girl had such good judgment?
The elevator arrived, and the two stepped out, heading home.
Zhong Xiaoxiao was indeed exhausted from the trip and wanted to sleep as soon as she got home. Zhong Yuanyuan, understanding, let her rest first.
Once in her room, Zhong Xiaoxiao stepped onto the balcony and glanced down. Coincidentally, she saw Meng Yuqing walking toward Meng Yuzhou downstairs. Meng Yuqing seemed to sense something and glanced up at the building. Zhong Xiaoxiao, caught in her gaze as if she could see right through her, panicked and ducked back inside.
“What are you panicking for?” Zhong Xiaoxiao scolded herself inwardly for being so useless. So what if she saw her? Could she fly up here and eat her alive?
Even so, she didn’t dare take a single step toward the balcony.
After waiting for quite a while, she stole a glance outside, the person was gone.
Finally gone. Zhong Xiaoxiao’s heart completely settled down.
She really is like a lingering ghost.
Zhong Xiaoxiao had spent the entire winter break in the countryside, finally free from them. Now, the moment she returned, they came knocking. The pressure was too much.
Sitting back on the bed, Zhong Xiaoxiao felt restless. In this state, sleep was impossible.
What should she do? Should she continue following the plot?
The storyline seemed to have stalled because of her inner resistance.
The phone that could take her back to her original world was still at Meng Yuqing’s place. Zhong Xiaoxiao wasn’t sure if finding it would guarantee her return, but the phone was the key. After all, it was touching that phone that brought her here in the first place.
But what if she couldn’t find it?
What if the phone ringtone she heard that day was just a coincidence and not her phone at all?
If she really couldn’t go back, would she be willing to stay and live here? Zhong Xiaoxiao asked herself.
Admittedly, her current life was comfortable, filled with people who loved and cared for her, a hundred times better than her original world.
Yet, deep down, Zhong Xiaoxiao still wanted to return. She felt like none of this truly belonged to her. The lonely, deadbeat, corporate-slave life in the real world was hers. Right now, she was just living in a lavish dream, and eventually, she would wake up.
Zhong Xiaoxiao suddenly grew curious, what would waking up look like? If she and Meng Yuzhou ended up together, would that be the moment she woke up? Or would it simply mean the story was over? After all, wasn’t the novel’s ending supposed to be a happily-ever-after?
The process didn’t really matter as long as it was a happy ending.
As the female lead, didn’t she have the power to decide how things unfolded?
The male lead had fallen for her. Zhong Xiaoxiao could tell. All she had to do was say yes, and everything would be over. No drawn-out romance, just a neat happy ending.
After some deliberation, Zhong Xiaoxiao picked up her phone, dialed Meng Yuzhou’s number, and called him.
“Hello, who is this?” Meng Yuzhou’s voice came through the phone, sending a tremor through Zhong Xiaoxiao.
“Ah, Class President, it’s me…” Zhong Xiaoxiao was nervous, her palms sweating.
“Oh, it’s you,” Meng Yuzhou’s voice softened, turning warm and magnetic. “What’s wrong?”
“I have something to tell you,” Zhong Xiaoxiao said.
“Go ahead,” Meng Yuzhou replied. He was sitting in his family car, listening to her call while Meng Yuqing eavesdropped beside him.
“Do you like me?” Zhong Xiaoxiao asked. “Do you want to marry me?”
“…” Meng Yuzhou hadn’t expected her to cut straight to the point. “Why are you asking this all of a sudden?”
“Meng Yuzhou, just answer me,” Zhong Xiaoxiao pressed.
“…Yes,” Meng Yuzhou finally said. “I do. I want to.”
“Then marry me,” Zhong Xiaoxiao told him. “Let’s get our marriage certificate. I’m already of age.”
Meng Yuzhou was stunned. Just moments ago, Zhong Xiaoxiao had been distant with him now she was asking him to marry her. He felt surprised, and at a loss.
“Okay,” Meng Yuzhou agreed in the end. “I’ll talk to my family when I get back. We’ll arrange a formal proposal soon.”
“Mm, I’ll wait for you.” Zhong Xiaoxiao exhaled quietly in relief. Because of her change of heart, the story was finally heading toward its conclusion.
The system also felt the ending came rather abruptly: the female lead was going to marry the male lead!
When Meng Yuqing heard its words, her mind buzzed, going completely blank. Distant voices speaking somewhere far away, she couldn’t hear any of them. Her consciousness sank into a dazed stupor. The female lead was marrying the male lead. This was the task she’d been striving to complete all along. Now that the mission was nearing its end, her heart turned ice-cold, as if submerged in freezing water.
Her hands clenched involuntarily, her eyes fixed venomously on her brother. Meng Yuzhou was still lost in the joy of his impending marriage to Zhong Xiaoxiao. When he finally snapped out of it and saw his sister staring at him like a venomous snake, a chill ran down his spine.
“Why are you looking at me like that?” Meng Yuzhou blurted out. Seeing her expression, he suddenly remembered, she didn’t like Zhong Xiaoxiao. Though she hadn’t shown it these past days, even actively helping him strategize and gathering information about Zhong Xiaoxiao, deep down, she disliked her. He knew this.
“Who’s Big Brother marrying? And you’re planning to propose?” Meng Yuqing’s face was eerily calm, not exactly angry, but clearly displeased.
“You don’t need to know,” Meng Yuzhou told her. “You’ll have a sister-in-law soon enough.”
“Is it Zhong Xiaoxiao?” Meng Yuqing let out a light laugh. “No need to hide it from me. I’d actually love to have her as my sister-in-law.”
Seeing her smile, which seemed genuine, Meng Yuzhou nodded. “She said she’ll marry me.”
“Oh, congratulations then.” Her tone was airy, almost detached.
“I’ll have to tell Mom and Dad when I get back. Not sure if they’ll agree to us marrying so young.” Meng Yuzhou frowned slightly at the thought, since they were still students.
“Don’t worry, they won’t object.” Meng Yuqing reassured him. “They’ll probably be thrilled to see their son marry early.”
