I Fall Every Time I Meet an Alpha [Transmigrated into a Book] - Chapter 62
Zhong Xiaoxiao had anticipated their reunion, but she never expected it to come so soon. After more than a month apart, they actually ran into each other on the street, it almost felt like one of those cliché romantic drama moments where love blossoms around a corner.
When Meng Yuzhou saw Zhong Xiaoxiao again, his heart involuntarily started pounding. Watching her bounce over like a soft pink bunny, he couldn’t help but want to pull her into his arms. But before he could act, Meng Yuqing stepped forward beside him, grabbing Zhong Xiaoxiao’s wrist with a faint smirk. “Zhong Xiaoxiao, what a coincidence… running into you again.”
Zhong Xiaoxiao shivered at the touch of her cold hand, frowning slightly as she met her gaze. “Meng Yuqing… long time no see.” She gritted her teeth into a smile and pried her hand away.
Meng Yuqing’s grip was tight, as if afraid she might escape.
Unable to break free, Zhong Xiaoxiao shot her an annoyed glare. “You’re hurting me.”
“Oh, sorry.” Meng Yuqing snapped out of it, noticing the red marks left on Zhong Xiaoxiao’s fair wrist, and finally let go. Rubbing the sore spot, Zhong Xiaoxiao tugged her sleeve down to cover the marks.
Meng Yuzhou stepped closer, hesitating before asking, “So… how’s the new school treating you?”
“Pretty good.” Thank heavens even though she was still a loner, at least no one bullied her anymore.
Life was easy and comfortable now.
“Xiaoxiao, ” Before she could say more to the siblings, Zhong Yuanyuan called from behind her. “What are you doing? Come on!”
“Oh!” Zhong Xiaoxiao turned to respond before glancing back at the siblings, her rosy lips parting as white mist escaped with her words. “My mom’s calling. I gotta go.”
“Alright.” Meng Yuzhou nodded, but as she turned to leave, he blurted out, “Why is your phone number out of service? Did you change it?”
“Ah, that…” Zhong Xiaoxiao stammered, already backing away with a wave. “I’m leaving, bye!”
“Wait, ” Meng Yuzhou watched her run off, his heart full of reluctance.
“Brother, let’s go too.” Meng Yuqing nudged him to follow.
After a brief hesitation, Meng Yuzhou caught on and nodded, trailing after her.
Like stalkers, the siblings shadowed Zhong Xiaoxiao and her mother.
Zhong Xiaoxiao and Zhong Yuanyuan entered the supermarket, pushing a cart. As Zhong Yuanyuan loaded items inside, Zhong Xiaoxiao’s eyes wandered only to spot the siblings pushing their own cart right behind them.
Her heart nearly jumped out of her chest. Why were they following her?
Well… maybe she was overthinking it. What if they just happened to be shopping too? It wasn’t like she owned the supermarket.
Her mood turned complicated, especially with the fear that her mom might notice them. Dressed too warmly, she was already sweating inside the store.
“Xiaoxiao, what snacks do you want?” Zhong Yuanyuan asked while picking a few bags from the shelf. “Anything you’re craving?”
“Uh, whatever’s fine.” Zhong Xiaoxiao answered absentmindedly, her attention fixed behind her, dreading the moment they might approach and how she’d handle it.
Zhong Yuanyuan turned to look at her and, noticing the sweat on her face, couldn’t help but say, “Are you hot? If you’re hot, take off a layer. Honestly, you’re already sweating.”
“Got it, got it,” Zhong Xiaoxiao replied as she removed her long pink coat and placed it in the shopping cart. Now she was wearing a white blouse tied with a black ribbon bow, paired with a pink-and-white checkered mini skirt and flesh-colored leggings, looking fresh and cool.
Though her body felt cooler, her head was still warm, so she took off her hat and tossed it into the cart as well.
Zhong Yuanyuan frowned again. “Why are you throwing things around? Should I just get another cart for your clothes?”
“…” Zhong Xiaoxiao’s round cheeks were flushed, half from the heat and half from nerves. Having someone familiar watching from behind made her feel uneasy. She fanned herself with the hat, a few strands of her long hair fluttering loose. Remembering her hair, she touched it again, she hadn’t tied it up today since she’d been wearing a hat. Hopefully, it wasn’t too messy.
Zhong Xiaoxiao suddenly became overly conscious of her appearance, wishing she had a mirror to check how she looked.
Zhong Yuanyuan pushed the cart ahead, leaving Zhong Xiaoxiao to follow behind.
As they turned a corner, someone suddenly grabbed Zhong Xiaoxiao’s arm. When she turned and saw it was Meng Yuqing, her heart raced so fast it nearly leaped out of her chest.
“What?” Zhong Xiaoxiao asked nervously.
Meng Yuqing chuckled softly, leaning closer. Zhong Xiaoxiao instinctively stepped back. “What are you doing?”
“Nothing,” Meng Yuqing said, gripping her hand and staring at her plump cheeks, her own heartbeat unsteady. With the system’s influence, time had flown by just from yesterday to today yet Meng Yuqing felt like it had been ages since she’d last seen Zhong Xiaoxiao.
The perception of time’s speed was subjective. Though time had passed quickly, the lingering sense of absence remained. It truly had been over a month since she’d seen Zhong Xiaoxiao.
That feeling of not wanting to let go once they reunited even Meng Yuqing couldn’t explain it.
“My brother wants to talk to you. Come on.” Meng Yuqing pulled her firmly toward Meng Yuzhou.
Zhong Xiaoxiao glanced back anxiously, worried her mother might come looking for her. “If my mom notices I’m gone, she’ll come find me. Whatever you have to say, make it quick…”
Meng Yuzhou, pushing his own cart, watched as his sister led Zhong Xiaoxiao over. Her light outfit made her look even more pure and adorable, and he swallowed hard as she approached.
Zhong Xiaoxiao thought to herself, I should’ve pretended not to see them. Why did I even say hello? Now I can’t shake them off.
Hearing her thoughts, Meng Yuqing smirked. Nice try. I came looking for you on purpose.
“Class president…” Zhong Xiaoxiao stopped in front of Meng Yuzhou, briefly meeting his eyes before lowering her gaze, feigning shyness. “If you have something to say, hurry up…”
“Your contact info,” Meng Yuzhou asked. “Can I have it?”
“Oh, that…” Zhong Xiaoxiao hesitated. She had changed her number after transferring out of Yinglan High School to avoid further harassment from the male lead and the Vicious girlfriend.
Now, she was being asked to give it to them again. Had changing her number been pointless after all?
“Where’s your phone?” Meng Yuqing directly reached for the pink heart-shaped sling bag on her shoulder. Zhong Xiaoxiao panicked and snatched it back, glaring at Meng Yuqing unhappily. “What are you doing? Robbing me?”
“Yeah, robbing you. What about it?” Meng Yuqing took a step forward, looking at her with a mocking smile.
“I’ll call the police!” Zhong Xiaoxiao clutched her bag tightly, eyeing Meng Yuqing warily.
“Xiaoqing,” Meng Yuzhou intervened with his words, “stop it.”
Hearing Meng Yuzhou’s voice, Zhong Xiaoxiao felt a pang of guilt, as if she was being too petty. She quickly tried to justify herself, “My mom confiscated my phone. I don’t have one…”
Just as she spoke, the phone in her bag started ringing.
Zhong Xiaoxiao was mortified.
The timing of that ringtone couldn’t have been worse.
The siblings stared intently at her bag. Meng Yuqing smirked sarcastically, “Oh, you don’t have a phone. And then?”
The ringing continued, and without answering, people around them began to stare. Zhong Xiaoxiao wished she could dig a hole and disappear.
She turned her back, unzipped the bag, swiped the phone screen, and hung up.
No sooner had she hung up than the phone rang again before she could say anything.
Zhong Xiaoxiao was so embarrassed her scalp tingled. She said to the two of them, “Uh, my mom’s calling me. Let’s talk another time, okay?” With that, she tried to bolt.
“Zhong Xiaoxiao!” Meng Yuqing called after her. “We know where you live. Do you want us to come find you?”
“…” Zhong Xiaoxiao’s legs froze the moment she heard those words.
Why did it have to be like this? Why insist on this? Zhong Xiaoxiao was getting angry. Was forcing someone like this fun? Couldn’t she just not see them? Huh? Was that too much to ask?
“Zhong Xiaoxiao, you can’t hide.” Meng Yuqing’s voice chased after her, but Zhong Xiaoxiao still ran away.
She ran back to Zhong Yuanyuan’s side. Seeing her, Zhong Yuanyuan couldn’t help but scold her, “Where did you run off to? And you didn’t answer your phone. You’re a grown-up, can’t you be more composed? What’s with all the running?”
“Mom,” Zhong Xiaoxiao said, clinging to a faint, unrealistic hope, “can we move?”
“Move?” Zhong Yuanyuan frowned at the suggestion. “Why? We’re living just fine here.”
“Someone’s after me,” Zhong Xiaoxiao said dramatically, trying to sound serious. “We need to move fast!”
“Who?” Zhong Yuanyuan’s heart skipped a beat. “Kid, are you developing paranoia? You’re making me suspicious too.”
“It’s true!” Zhong Xiaoxiao insisted.
Zhong Yuanyuan rubbed her temples and waved her off like shooing a fly. “Go away. True or not, why move when we’re settled? You’re always at home, what danger could there be?”
Staying home all the time might be safe, but the thought of Meng Yuqing showing up at the door anytime gave Zhong Xiaoxiao serious anxiety.
“Then can I stay with relatives for a while?” Zhong Xiaoxiao asked, unwilling to give up.
“You want to go to your grandma’s in the countryside?” Zhong Yuanyuan figured if her daughter was this desperate, she might as well send her there.
“Yeah, let’s do that!” Zhong Xiaoxiao agreed eagerly.
From a distance, Meng Yuqing watched Zhong Xiaoxiao and her mother talking. She asked the system, “System, what’s the heroine thinking?”
System 666: The female lead is thinking about how to avoid you all.
Meng Yuqing: Why did she suddenly start disliking us so much?
System 666: What do you think? It’s all because of you.
Meng Yuqing: I was just acting according to my character. Did I do something wrong again?
System 666: Hmph, just proves you’re useless.
Meng Yuqing: Adjust the timeline again. Let’s not waste any more time.
