I Am Her Secret Beauty - Chapter 5
Mu Xi looked at her, her perfect butler smiles barely holding up.
“I’d be happy to, young miss.” Halfway out the door, she had no choice but to step back inside, soothing her, “I’ll accompany you through the entire check-up. There’s no need to worry.”
Nan Xi released her wrist and followed Dr. Anna for the examination. Mu Xi stayed by her side, occasionally exchanging a few words with the doctor to maintain a friendly rapport.
So Nan Xi was 170 cm tall. She was half a head shorter than Mu Xi, who had always assumed she wasn’t particularly short. It hadn’t occurred to her that Nan Xi would be considered quite tall by ordinary standards.
But then again, children from wealthy families might have health issues, but they’d never lack proper nutrition.
“Miss Nan Xi, please open your mouth.”
Nan Xi obediently opened wide. Dr. Anna, wearing a small light on her head, carefully examined her oral cavity.
“Miss Nan Xi, place your head here and look at this spot.”
Nan Xi rested her chin on the device as instructed, focusing on the spot the doctor indicated.
“Miss Nan Xi. Please extend your hand. I’ll draw blood from your finger.”
Nan Xi stretched out her right hand, but just as Dr. Anna was about to prick her, she quickly pulled it back.
She turned to Mu Xi, expressionless, and extended her left hand instead.
“Butler Mu, I’m a little squeamish about blood.”
Mu Xi gently took her hand. Hers was a size larger, enough to completely envelop Nan Xi’s in her palm.
Feeling the reassuring warmth from Mu Xi’s grip, Nan Xi steadied herself. She watched as Dr. Anna filled a small vial with her blood through a thin tube. Though she felt a bit chilled, it was nothing serious.
Neither Dr. Anna nor her assistant found anything unusual about the situation. They’d dealt with plenty of wealthy clients, eccentric personalities came with the territory, and having a butler accompany a check-up wasn’t even close to the strangest request they’d encountered.
Besides, omegas did tend to need more care and reassurance. They often lacked a sense of security, prone to acting spoiled or clingy…
So, after consulting with Mu Xi, they had even arranged for the examination to take place in the Nan family’s greenhouse garden. Surrounded by sunlight and flowers, Miss Nan Xi would surely feel more at ease during the procedure.
When it came time for the ultrasound, Dr. Anna asked Nan Xi to lie down and lift her top to fully expose her abdomen.
Fortunately, Nan Xi was wearing a two-piece dress set. She carefully pulled up her blouse and unzipped her skirt slightly to lower it.
The assistant prepared the coupling gel while adjusting the equipment.
Mu Xi caught sight of Nan Xi’s smooth, flat stomach, it seemed even fairer than her face.
Nan Xi’s body was beautiful, so much so that Mu Xi hesitated over whether she should avert her gaze. But she also worried Nan Xi might scold her for being distracted.
Soon, she came up with the perfect solution: staring at the display screen in front of Dr. Anna. Even if she couldn’t make sense of anything on it.
When the cold, sticky coupling gel touched Nan Xi’s stomach, she couldn’t help but frown and let out a soft sound of discomfort.
She glanced at Mu Xi, only to find her intently focused on the machine. A cold smirk tugged at her lips. “Butler Mu, do you even understand ultrasound imaging?”
Mu Xi quickly peeked at Nan Xi’s gel-covered abdomen before answering honestly, “No, young miss.”
“Then why are you staring?”
“I thought maybe if I looked long enough, I might figure it out. Your well-being matters more than anything else.”
Nan Xi fell silent, lying there in a daze as the assistant slid the probe over her belly, seemingly oblivious to the cold or the tickling sensation.
Once the examination was over, the assistant fetched some tissues to wipe off the coupling gel from Nan Xi’s stomach.
Mu Xi turned on her Bluetooth earpiece and quietly instructed the maid outside, “Prepare warm water for the young miss,” to ensure Nan Xi wouldn’t catch a chill. Then, with a smile, she reached out to the assistant:
“Let me do it.”
Mu Xi took the tissues from the assistant and gently wiped Nan Xi’s abdomen. Her movements had to be extremely careful, Nan Xi’s stomach was soft, and she had to be even softer, lest the slightest carelessness cause harm.
At the Home Economics University, there were specialized courses teaching alphas how to control their strength to avoid damaging their employers’ belongings or the employers themselves. Mu Xi had excelled in that class.
Nan Xi stared blankly down at Mu Xi wiping her stomach.
Her emotions at this moment were complicated. Very complicated.
She wanted to know, how much of Mu Xi’s attentive care was due to her being a butler, and how much was genuine personal concern?
The answer would probably disappoint her greatly.
And so, she hated her.
When it came time for the electrocardiogram, Dr. Anna paid extra attention. Mu Xi had informed her that Miss Nan Xi sometimes experienced emotional instability, shivering when angry or upset and such intense emotions could easily harm the heart.
She said solemnly, “Miss Nan Xi, please remove your top. We’ll proceed with the ECG now.”
Hearing this, Mu Xi immediately took two steps back and turned around, maintaining a certain distance from Nan Xi.
By the time Nan Xi looked up, Mu Xi was already standing three zhang away, as if Nan Xi were some man-eating beast and Mu Xi the helpless lamb at risk of being devoured.
As she removed her top, Nan Xi asked casually, “Why are you standing so far back?”
“My apologies, young miss,” Mu Xi replied, her back still turned, her face slightly warm. “I must not disrespect you.”
“We’re both women. What’s the issue?”
Mu Xi grew even more flustered. “I’m sorry, young miss, but… my rut is approaching, so…”
Ah, rut.
Nan Xi’s gaze turned hollow. In her memory, Mu Xi’s ruts did indeed come once in summer and once in winter, a very troublesome time…
Come to think of it, Nan Xi hadn’t smelled Mu Xi’s pheromones in a long time. For social etiquette, most people used scent patches to suppress their pheromones, but Nan Xi had always liked Mu Xi’s scent.
Recalling that faintly bitter orange fragrance, Nan Xi unconsciously licked her lips and asked Mu Xi with sudden interest:
“How many days until your rut?”
At this point, Dr. Anna and the assistant finally sensed something amiss.
An omega asking an alpha about their rut was an extremely suggestive question, so much so that it bordered on sexual innuendo.
The family doctor gave Mu Xi a discreet once-over. She had to admit, this female alpha butler did look rather… appetizing.
Tall, with striking features, and likely a high rank, no wonder she had caught the eye of the Nan family’s young miss.
But to bring up such matters so openly in front of them was still a bit too bold.
They maintained an unspoken silence, quietly attaching the electrodes to Nan Xi’s chest one by one, keeping tight-lipped about these wealthy family secrets.
Mu Xi, of course, understood the implication. As an adult working in such a unique profession, she often encountered these veiled references, which made her feel extremely awkward.
Most importantly, she believed Nan Xi was simply a bit aloof and innocent. The question had been asked casually, without the underlying meaning others might assume.
She tried to salvage her image and reputation in front of the doctors: “Thank you, young miss, for your concern about the well-being of your staff. You’ve always prioritized the health of us domestic workers, whether in daily life or-”
“When was it?” Nan Xi interrupted her again.
“…”
Mu Xi gave up struggling and answered honestly, “About ten days, though it might not be exact.”
Nan Xi nodded in satisfaction, then turned to threaten the doctors performing her ECG: “You-not a word of this to anyone.”
“Rest assured, we will defend your privacy with our lives.”
What Nan Xi didn’t want them to reveal was Mu Xi’s sensitive period because alphas were often at their most vulnerable during such times.
What the doctors swore not to disclose was the fact that the young miss of the Nan family was secretly involved with the housekeeper.
Mu Xi, who saw through everything, was utterly exhausted.
She knew that housekeepers in wealthy families often bore the brunt of scandals, but this kind of accusation was just too…
Given the one-on-many private service, the test results came back quickly. Dr. Anna soon had all of Nan Xi’s medical reports in hand.
With a smile, she congratulated Nan Xi:
“Miss Nan Xi, although your constitution is somewhat delicate, the results show no issues with your health. Overall, you’re in excellent condition.”
Nan Xi wore an “I told you so” expression, unfazed.
Mu Xi escorted the doctors to the door, then went to the living room to apologize to the waiting family psychologist for the delay. She confirmed the dinner menu with the staff and requested a first-aid kit.
After that, she returned to Nan Xi’s side: “You may proceed with your counseling session with Dr. Zhang whenever you’re ready.”
Nan Xi was idly flipping through her medical report, seemingly not listening to Mu Xi, when she suddenly blurted out, “Do you think I’m spoiled?”
In truth, Nan Xi wasn’t spoiled at all. During her five years abroad, she had declined the life assistant Nan Zhiya tried to arrange for her, living alone and handling everything herself. Even when problems arose, she never complained.
But after reuniting with Mu Xi, her old temperament seemed to resurface, occasionally acting capriciously for no reason, though that wasn’t her intention.
Mu Xi replied smoothly, “Not at all, young miss. You’re the strongest person I’ve ever met.”
Nan Xi curled her lips mockingly.
Mu Xi responded with a composed smile. Not only that, she retrieved the first-aid kit she had requested earlier from a maid and invited Nan Xi to sit down in the greenhouse garden.
Puzzled but compliant, Nan Xi took a seat.
Surrounded by a riot of blooming roses, the delicate fragrance filling the air, Nan Xi sat in confusion as Mu Xi knelt before her on one knee, opened the first-aid kit, and gently lifted her calf.
It was the bruise from bumping into the bathtub that morning, Mu Xi had noticed it during the medical examination.
She never mentioned it, but right after the physical exam, she immediately fetched the first aid kit to give Nan Xi some basic treatment.
Nan Xi felt an inexplicable ache in her heart. Suppressing the lump rising in her throat, she said to Mu Xi with forced composure, “You’re quite thoughtful.”
“It’s my honor to take care of these little details for you, Miss.”
Mu Xi applied the cool ointment to the redness and swelling on Nan Xi’s calf, which reminded her of the ultrasound gel on Nan Xi’s abdomen during the examination earlier.
Clear, sticky, clinging to Nan Xi’s soft, delicate belly.
It looked beautiful.
