Hey! Control Yourself! - Chapter 1
Chapter 1: The Transmigration Experiment
“In the vocabulary of the Gaya humans, the concepts of “masks” and “gambling” do not exist, in the distribution of their brain regions…” Inside the Second Science Hall of the Baocheng Military Academy, despite it being the lunch break, many students were still studying.
Beneath a floating screen, a black-haired youth was reading the literature before him word by word: “The perception of Gaya humans regarding the appearance of their own kind usually remains superficially fixed on hair color, skin tone, and eye color…”
Gaya humans.
Over a decade ago, humanity learned that a prehistoric civilization of their own kind once existed, and that this civilization—after enduring an apocalypse, very likely continued to survive to this day. This civilization was dubbed the “Gaya Civilization.”
Treating the Gaya as a hypothetical enemy, and fueled by both fear and curiosity, humans even added a “Gaya” subject to university curricula specifically to study this mysterious civilization.
Since Shen Ji transferred to this military academy in the first half of the year, he had also opted for the Gaya studies. The top-tier resources for academic research at Baocheng Military Academy were indeed irreplaceable. Specifically, in recent years, New Humans had developed an advanced instrument that could utilize the collision of cosmic strings to initiate space-time travel.
In other words, it was very likely that New Humans could travel back to the Gaya era to study that civilization up close. As a first-tier university, Baocheng Military Academy would undoubtedly participate in the experiment.
“Shen Ji, the assessment is coming up soon. Why are you still looking at this stuff?”
A hand was about to pat his shoulder but was blocked by Shen Ji’s pen. “What is it?”
A handsome blue-haired guy retracted his hand, looking speechless. “What do you mean ‘what is it’? The Gaya transmigration experiment is about to start. Everyone is preparing their audit requirements right now, but you—you’re either sleeping or reading these documents every single day.”
Shen Ji hovered his pen over the data, marking a section. “The audit requirements are just a facade of fair competition. The spots must have been decided long ago.”
Rey grabbed him by the neck, making a jealous sound from his throat: “Yes, yes, as long as you sit here, the mentors will find every way possible to deliver a spot into your hands. Damned, enviable talent.”
“Rey, if you’re having a fit, go get a rabies vaccine.”
The antics ended. As the two walked out into the corridor of the Science and Technology Hall, Shen Ji’s gaze swept past the portrait projections of historical figures. This was the corridor where New Humans simulated portraits of Gaya historical figures; by clicking a name, one could see the simulated image of that person.
Despite having seen them many times, every time a simulation appeared, it still drew gasps of admiration from those nearby.
On the screen was a young man with white hair, radiating a masculine and beautiful charm. He was tall and lean. Once human eyes met those soul-shaking eyes, they couldn’t look away. This was an image simulated by the light-brain based on archaeological findings, boasting at least an eighty percent resemblance.
A student nearby said, “That’s the leader of the Shaxing Organization—Saint Lu.”
“The figure known as a ‘demon’ in prehistoric times. However, in our school, he actually has a lot of fans.”
Indeed, a prehistoric figure who had been “dead for a hundred thousand years” had actually triggered a significant craze among the youth of the New Human century. Because Saint Lu’s life was full of ups and downs, and his appearance was rich with history, he possessed a “beautiful, strong, and tragic” vibe that made people both love and pity him.
Most importantly, he was an Omega.
His physique, his gaze, and those world-shaking events he orchestrated completely subverted the modern perception of Omegas.
“If I could go to Gaya, I’d definitely have a good look at this guy to see if he’s really a demon,” someone nearby remarked.
“Lord Saint Lu, have mercy on us commoners,” another said, praying to Saint Lu to bless his upcoming assessment.
Rey looked at the red-eyed demon in the image and said to Shen Ji, “This guy’s eyes are really cool.”
Shen Ji thought to himself: This guy actually has heterochromia. The left eye leans toward pomegranate red, while the right is darker.
Since birth, Saint Lu had been possessing him.
Saint Lu, known as a demon from the prehistoric era, had his consciousness preserved in a liquid sphere as one of the “seeds” during the apocalypse, enduring for a hundred thousand years. Until eighteen years ago, when the unlucky Shen Ji was born, he became the new vessel for that consciousness.
Saint Lu’s consciousness had always been hidden within him. When he was a child, the demon would occasionally appear in his dreams. But that was limited to before he turned five; after five, Saint Lu stopped appearing in his dreams.
As he grew older, Shen Ji’s mental power and vitality were no longer enough to support two souls. He spent at least 17 hours a day in deep sleep, and this phenomenon was becoming increasingly severe. This indicated that Saint Lu was still within him.
And now, with no other choice, traveling back to the Gaya era to kill the other party was the only chance to change everything.
He hoped it wasn’t too late.
A dense simulation of instruments appeared on a 3D projection. The mentor stood beneath the massive image:
“For this Gaya experiment, our school is honored to have four spots. The selected personnel must have powerful mental energy, and their endurance must exceed that of ordinary people. Therefore, we have determined that participating students must have a mental power at least at the S-rank median.”
As soon as these words were spoken, everyone began to sigh.
“Heavens, S-rank median! I thought I had a chance.”
“Ahhh, the transmigration experiment… it really isn’t a place for guys like us.”
“Enough!” the mentor followed up. “No need to complain. Don’t think this Gaya experiment is like before where the school can provide a safety net for you. It’s fair to say this mission is one where life and death are uncertain. So, those who can’t go shouldn’t be too sad.”
“If that’s the case, then we already know the first person in Baocheng Military Academy qualified to go,” a student said, having a sudden realization.
Everyone turned to look at Shen Ji, only to see him buried in his desk, fast asleep.
The mentor was already used to it.
“These years are a critical period of cooperation between our Empire and the Federation. Therefore, for this Gaya experiment, the First Military Academy of the Federation has also sent four students to participate, all of whom are masters of mental energy. As for the specific tasks, they will be announced later.”
“Now, the students whose names are called, please go to the Principal’s office: Shen Ji, Llyrs, Rey, Sha Mo.”
The several people called stood up amidst the envious gazes of the crowd.
Only Shen Ji remained asleep.
“Mentor, I’ll wake Shen Ji up.” Llyrs raised his hand with a touch of malice, about to slap it down on Shen Ji’s head.
Rey grabbed his hand first, staring him down. “What are you trying to do?”
Llyrs laughed. “Just helping him clear his head. Sleeping in class and still getting a Gaya spot, isn’t that a bit too unfair to the students who actually work hard?”
Rey leaned in close to him. “Take that up with the Principal.”
The mental energy of the two collided between their wrists. Seeing them at each other’s throats, the mentor said coldly, “That’s enough. You lot go first. Shen Ji will go later.”
Inside the Principal’s office, the Principal and Vice-Principal sat behind a conference table. Simultaneously, the room activated imaging mode, and several figures sat virtually in 3D across from them. Judging by the uniforms, they were students from the First Military Academy.
The Principal said, “You’ve arrived. These children are the student representatives from the First Military Academy. They will participate in the Gaya transmigration experiment alongside you.”
The students from both sides, separated by vast interstellar distances, finished their mutual introductions via virtual imaging.
The opposing mentor smiled. “Baocheng has four spots, so where is the last student?”
Rey and the others remained silent. Although Llyrs was hostile toward Shen Ji, he didn’t want to air the school’s dirty laundry in front of the First Military Academy.
Instead, the Principal said frankly, “There is indeed one more student. Right now, he is likely still sleeping.”
As soon as this was said, the students on the other side were stunned for a good while.
Did they hear that right?
The Gaya transmigration was arguably the most significant project in the entire interstellar region in recent years, highly valued by the leaders of both the Empire and the Federation. The students participating in this experiment were the elite of the elite.
And now they were being told he was sleeping?
Should they say Baocheng Military Academy truly didn’t care, or were they deliberately provoking the First Military Academy? Or was that sleeping guy someone who got in through the back door?
“So, are we supposed to wait for that student now?” the opposing mentor asked, his words laced with a hidden sting.
The Principal waved a hand. “No need for that. That child won’t wake up for a while. We’ll discuss the details first and inform him privately later.”
The students of the First Military Academy exchanged looks. Rey silently gave Shen Ji a thumbs-up in his heart.
One month later.
The cosmic vessel of Baocheng Military Academy, equipped with jump engines, catapulted into space. The great Imperial flag flew on the left, and the Baocheng Military Academy flag flew on the right.
Shen Ji and the others officially headed for the Gaya star system. They would perform the transmigration on a small celestial body within the Gaya system.
On the vessel, the mentor in charge of the mission made the objectives clear to Shen Ji and the others.
“First: Try to collect various response measures and self-rescue plans, including escape routes, made by the Gaya civilization before the end of the world.”
“Second: Understand the psychology of Gaya humans and find their weaknesses.”
“Third: Obtain the genes of the ‘Enigma’ gender.”
“Fourth: Minimize the strength of the First Military Academy as much as possible.”
Hearing the last sentence, the students all looked at the mentor.
The mentor said, “Don’t find it strange. On the side of the First Military Academy, their hostility toward us is only greater.”
The cooperation between the Empire and the Federation in recent years was only because of the unknown deterrent that was the Gaya civilization. In the face of a powerful threat, everyone had to pull together. But at the end of the day, Gaya was still something ethereal and distant; the Empire’s true rival remained the visible and tangible Federation. The Federation, of course, thought the same.
“So, it’s not just about weakening the other party, but also being on guard against them. The important thing is that you must work as a team and not engage in internal strife.”
After the mentor finished speaking, he glanced at Llyrs. Sha Mo and Rey also looked toward Llyrs. Llyrs looked at Shen Ji, whose eyelids were drooping as if he were about to fall asleep.
After twenty days on the vessel, they finally arrived at the cosmic port of the Gaya system. The team took a space shuttle and launched into the space station, followed by a fleet of frigates. When they arrived at the space station, the team from the First Military Academy had already checked into the capsule hotel there.
There were three days left before the space-time instrument was to be activated.
Rey brought the sleeping Shen Ji into a small cabin with slightly warmer decor—a room in the capsule hotel.
When Shen Ji woke up, he felt that he probably wouldn’t live past twenty. The time he spent in deep sleep every day was getting longer and longer.
Midway through his sleep, he felt something lightly biting his ear. A sticky, warm breath persistently clung to his face and neck. Shen Ji frowned, wanting to avoid this annoying thing. But he slept too deeply; his consciousness moved, but his body did not.
Someone was speaking the Gaya language, stroking the new hair growth behind his temples, and gripping his shoulder to bite down hard on his veins through the skin—but his tone was one of extreme pleading.
Who was it? Was it Saint Lu?
Shen Ji suddenly snapped awake.
“Saint Lu…”
The entire cabin was terrifyingly silent. Outside the window, a massive celestial body rotated slowly in the galaxy. That guy’s consciousness hadn’t appeared in his dreams for over a decade.
Maybe it was just a dream.
A call request from Rey’s light-brain came through. “Shen Ji, the experiment is about to begin. Come quickly.” He then sent a location.
They had already simulated the experimental preparation on-site once before. Soon, the team members arrived at the location.
Shen Ji was the last one to jump off the shuttle. The searching gazes of the First Military Academy team were directed at him without concealment. Everyone nodded politely, but no one spoke to anyone else.
Only after Shen Ji and the others walked ahead did the sounds of discussion rise: “That Llyrs is Baocheng’s most powerful student this year.”
“The mentor said we need to pay special attention to Shen Ji.”
“Who exactly is that guy?”
“I don’t know, but his mental energy value hasn’t been made public yet.”
“No wonder Baocheng’s principal deliberately shamed us last time.”
