Chapter 12: Like a Puppy Seeking Its Owner’s Favor, Gently Nuzzling
Xie Mingyao immediately spoke up, “Reverse back to that alley we just passed.”
The driver hesitated, it was late, and going into an alley seemed too dangerous. Xie Mingyao repeated calmly but firmly, “Go back.”
Recognizing the young mistress’s usual willfulness, the driver had no choice but to nod and reverse the car to the mouth of the alley.
Inside the alley.
Ye Qingyu eyed the group that had dragged her in with wary vigilance.
Leading them was the same man who had tried to force himself on her in the bar’s private room that day. The other three wore flashy shirts, sported dyed hair, and looked every bit the delinquents they were.
“Well, well, if it isn’t Miss Ye. Fancy meeting you here,” Wang Li said, puffing out his beer belly with a sleazy grin, his beady eyes raking over her.
After some digging, he’d confirmed that Xie Mingyao was indeed the heiress of the Xie conglomerate someone he couldn’t afford to provoke. But this Ye Qingyu? No such background. Strangely enough, despite both women competing for the same guy, Xie Mingyao had actually helped her rival.
Luckily, their relationship was strained. If he targeted Ye Qingyu in secret, Xie Mingyao probably wouldn’t intervene. The thought of claiming this untouchable, pure beauty for himself made Wang Li rub his hands in anticipation.
Ye Qingyu tensed, discreetly pulling out her phone to call for help while backing away. Her expression remained icy. “What do you want?!”
“What else? Just inviting you to dinner,” Wang Li laughed, though his tone dripped with ulterior motives.
The three thugs Wang Li had hired were seeing a beauty like Ye Qingyu for the first time, nearly drooling as they chimed in.
“Brother Wang, forget the payment. Once you’re done with her, hand her over to us.”
“Still a student, huh? Looks untouched.”
“Brother Wang’s got great taste.”
Flattered, Wang Li smirked and nodded. “Sure, as long as you don’t mind waiting.”
Disgust flashed across Ye Qingyu’s face. When one of the thugs lunged to grab her, she stuffed her phone back into her pocket and swung her backpack hard at his forehead.
The thug staggered from the blow, clutching his bleeding head as he snarled, “You bitch! You dare hit me? Get her!”
The other two charged. A sharp glint flickered in Ye Qingyu’s eyes as she fought back.
Her skills weren’t polished, she’d never had formal training. Growing up in tough circumstances with her mother, she’d picked up a few moves online to protect herself, but they were far from refined.
The thugs relied on brute strength rather than technique, yet even so, Ye Qingyu was outmatched. After one collapsed from a serious injury, the remaining two overpowered her. As Wang Li reached out to touch her face, she stomped on one thug’s foot and bit the other’s hand.
Their pained yells loosened their grip. Ye Qingyu bolted for the alley’s exit but before she could get far, someone yanked her hair and slammed her against the wall.
Ye Qingyu felt dizzy and ached all over, but as she watched the three men approach her, she pressed the shard of glass she had picked up from the corner against her own neck.
“Don’t move. If you dare come any closer, I’ll make sure you’re stained with blood!” she said coldly, her expression unreadable.
The remaining two thugs and Wang Li stared at her, taken aback by her ruthlessness.
But soon, Wang Li scoffed. “Go ahead, kill yourself if you dare. I, Wang Li, am no small fry. And what about your sick mother.”
Before he could finish, Ye Qingyu’s face darkened abruptly. Beneath her slightly disheveled hair, her usually indifferent black eyes turned icy and violent, devoid of any light as they fixed unblinkingly on him, sending a chill down his spine.
This was not the expression of a fragile girl. Wang Li froze for a moment, but then he grinned, he had found her weakness.
No matter how aloof she acted, she would still have to submit to him in the end. And once she did, he could do whatever he wanted!
Just as he was thinking this, a beam of light suddenly pierced the alley. Accompanied by the sound of a car horn, a black private vehicle stopped at the entrance.
The door opened, and Ye Qingyu saw a slender figure step out.
The headlights were too blinding, making it hard for her to see clearly who it was. But as the figure drew closer, a familiar silhouette gradually took shape in her world.
Dressed in a sleek and elegant British-style school uniform, a fitted white blouse, a deep blue pleated skirt swaying with each step, and a pair of black leather shoes moving at a leisurely pace.
Her fair, straight calves moved gracefully, and on her earlobes dangled exquisite butterfly pearl earrings, the delicate platinum chains beneath them resting against her collarbone, swaying slightly as she walked. The butterfly wings seemed to flutter, as if they were real, fluttering straight into Ye Qingyu’s heart.
As the figure stepped fully out of the glare of the headlights, everyone saw a stunningly beautiful girl standing in the alley.
She was breathtaking, like a blooming rose. The two unharmed thugs stared at her with greedy eyes, but Wang Li’s face twisted with shock and unease.
“Hey, Brother Wang, another pretty girl! These two are totally different types. How about you take the cold one, and leave this one for us?” one of the thugs said with a lecherous grin.
“Shut the hell up!” Wang Li slapped him without hesitation, his face dark with fury.
The thug stumbled, clutching his swollen cheek in confusion and anger. “Brother Wang, what’s the big idea? Even if you want her too, there’s no need to hit me!”
“Yeah, Brother Wang, we took your money to do this job, but we didn’t sell ourselves to you. Hitting my buddy like this, that’s not right,” the other thug said grimly, equally displeased.
“Shut your mouths!” Wang Li trembled with a mix of rage and fear, his voice sharp. “Do you even know who this is? This is the heiress of the Xie Group! Talk like that again, and you’re dead!”
The two thugs instantly paled, their bodies shaking as they looked at Xie Mingyao in terror. “S-sorry, Miss Xie! We didn’t know it was you!” they stammered in fear.
“It’s all because of our big mouths. Please don’t be angry.”
Xie Mingyao couldn’t be bothered to spare them another glance, her expression haughty as she said, “You seem to have forgotten what I told you that day.”
“Miss Xie, I heard this woman stole your fiancé. I just wanted to help you vent a little,” Wang Li forced an awkward smile, scrambling for an excuse.
But everyone knew the real reason.
Xie Mingyao wasn’t the least bit grateful. She scoffed coldly, “Yanfeng will always be my fiancé. Who do you think you are, daring to meddle in my affairs?”
Being berated by a young girl in front of others, Wang Li’s face twisted in humiliation. Yet, cowed by her status, he didn’t dare show his anger.
He plastered on a stiff smile, bowing obsequiously. “It’s all my fault. I really have no right to interfere in your matters, Miss Xie. Please just treat me like air and let me go.”
Xie Mingyao shot him a disgusted look before her gaze landed on Ye Qingyu, who was leaning against the wall. Frowning impatiently, she snapped, “What are you still standing there for? Do I have to personally invite you?”
Ye Qingyu looked at Xie Mingyao in surprise, yet somehow, she wasn’t all that shocked. It was as if she had always known about the kindness hidden beneath this young lady’s arrogance.
She slowly stepped out of the shadows.
In just one short afternoon, Ye Qingyu, this aloof, pitiable girl had been reduced to a sorry state. Her face bore a slap mark, her arms were scraped and bruised from being dragged, and even her legs were bleeding from torn skin. Xie Mingyao suddenly felt a pang of heartache.
The female lead really had it rough in the early stages. No matter how well she lived later, the scars of her past would always remain, like a shattered mirror that could never be perfectly pieced back together.
“Tsk, every time I see you, you’re being harassed by men. Do you just love seducing people that much?” Xie Mingyao lifted Ye Qingyu’s chin, scrutinizing her with undisguised malice, like a venomous flower in full bloom.
But Ye Qingyu didn’t react. Her eyes lowered slightly, her gaze resting on Xie Mingyao’s slender, pale fingers. The taste of blood lingered on her tongue, making her seem like a wounded stray.
After a long silence, without a word, she gently nuzzled Xie Mingyao’s fingertip with her raised chin like a little dog trying to please its owner.
“Thank you.”
Xie Mingyao stiffened, staring at the female lead in disbelief.
The female lead was supposed to be a proud, unyielding ice queen in the early stages, and later, a cold, domineering woman. What was she doing now?!
Xie Mingyao was so startled she yanked her hand back, wiping it disdainfully on Ye Qingyu’s clothes. Tipping her chin up, she said sharply, “Disgusting. Who asked for your thanks? Just stay away from Yanfeng in the future. Come on, I’m feeling generous today, I’ll take you home.”
This wasn’t in line with the young lady’s usual character, but earlier, the original host’s mother had called to remind her not to antagonize Ye Qingyu at every turn, as it would only earn Zhou Yanfeng’s pity and create more conflict between them.
So, doing this now wouldn’t be considered out of character. Sure enough, even after Ye Qingyu got into Xie Mingyao’s car, the system remained silent.
In the car, Xie Mingyao lounged lazily against the seat, her tone imperious. “Where do you live? I’ll drop you off first. You’re filthy, you’ll dirty my car.”
After Ye Qingyu gave the address, she glanced down at herself her clothes were indeed dirty from the fight with those three troublemakers.
The car was spotless, even the air inside smelled fragrant.
Even during winter and summer breaks when she worked part-time at upscale shopping malls, Ye Qingyu had never felt self-conscious or awkward about her poverty. But now, she suddenly felt a pang of insecurity.
Her faded canvas shoes, resting on the clean, plush carpet, shifted uneasily. She forced out a few words from her throat: “I’m sorry.”
