- Chapter 11 - Leaning In, Gently Holding
Ye Qingyu and Xie Mingyao, as two of the most prominent figures in this prestigious private high school, naturally drew attention wherever they went. Now, standing face-to-face over a conflict involving the same boy, they became the center of everyone’s gaze.
Students chatting and laughing in the hallway stopped in their tracks, their eyes gradually shifting toward the two.
Xie Mingyao lifted her leg, blocking Ye Qingyu’s path. If she wanted to pass, she would either have to step over Xie Mingyao’s leg or turn around and take another route.
The girl, half a head taller than Xie Mingyao, lowered her gaze slightly, her dark, ink-like eyes fixed coldly on Xie Mingyao, exuding an oppressive aura that made it hard to breathe.
Yet Xie Mingyao remained unfazed, meeting her stare head-on.
“What are you looking at? Our Mingyao is talking to you!” Zhou Ruohan pulled the candy cigarette from her mouth and pointed it mockingly at Ye Qingyu, her tone arrogant and disdainful.
Wang Yuzhen’s eyes flickered with malice as she sneered, “What, planning to seduce our Mingyao’s fiancé again? Shameless little vixen!”
Ye Qingyu glanced at Wang Yuzhen indifferently, her voice icy. “I know you. The boy you liked kept bothering me, but I never gave him the time of day. I don’t see how I’ve wronged you.”
Wang Yuzhen shivered under her gaze. Despite Ye Qingyu being just a poor, top-performing student standing alone, something about her made Wang Yuzhen shrink back, too afraid to speak again.
Moreover, her secret crush had just been exposed, and she feared Xie Mingyao’s wrath.
Xie Mingyao narrowed her eyes slightly and tilted her chin up. “What do you mean by that?”
“You don’t know?” Ye Qingyu took a step forward, closing the distance between them. She leaned down slightly, a faint smirk playing on her lips as her dark eyes swept over Xie Mingyao with amusement. “The boy she likes was obsessed with me, but she didn’t want to deal with it herself, so she used you as her weapon.”
Xie Mingyao was stunned.
What was going on? In the original novel, the female antagonist had no idea about any of this. Why was the female lead revealing it to her now?
Xie Mingyao panicked internally: System, what do I do in this situation?
The system reassured her: Don’t worry. It’s just a minor detail. As long as the main plot doesn’t change, it’s fine.
Xie Mingyao’s eyes flickered briefly.
It seemed her strategy had been working. Look, the female lead was already voluntarily telling her about being manipulated!
Xie Mingyao stayed silent, as if struggling to process the revelation, creating an awkward tension in the air.
After a long pause, Xie Mingyao snapped out of it and scoffed. “What, you think a few words can drive a wedge between us?” She paused, then added sharply, “Stop trying to change the subject!”
Ye Qingyu blinked, surprised by Xie Mingyao’s reaction. She couldn’t help but take another look at this dazzling, spoiled rich girl.
Truly a brainless, naive fool.
Ye Qingyu withdrew her gaze, her tone indifferent. “Suit yourself.”
The dismissive response infuriated Xie Mingyao. She clenched the candy cigarette between her teeth and swaggered forward like a delinquent street thug. “Who do you think you’re talking to? If you don’t kneel right now and apologize for what happened at the milk tea shop and in the classroom earlier, I’ll have my girls help you do it.”
The distance between the two was unusually close, so close that Ye Qingyu could catch the faint scent of roses on Xie Mingyao, so close that she could clearly see Xie Mingyao’s long, curled eyelashes, like tiny fans casting delicate shadows beneath her eyelids. Every flutter seemed to brush against her heart.
Ye Qingyu’s fingers, clutching her books, involuntarily curled slightly. After a long pause, under Xie Mingyao’s provocative and triumphant gaze, she leaned in and gently took the tip of the cigarette between her lips.
Just as she had guessed, it was candy not a real cigarette. This pampered young lady must have picked up the idea somewhere, thinking this would make her look cool.
A hint of amusement flickered in Ye Qingyu’s eyes as she slowly took the candy cigarette from Xie Mingyao’s lips, nibbling it away bite by bite. Under Xie Mingyao’s stunned gaze, she murmured softly, “Very sweet.”
Xie Mingyao was genuinely shocked, her mind blank, unable to react at all.
The system let out a sharp scream before its voice suddenly turned eerily mechanical: [Host’s persona is showing signs of collapse. As this is the first offense, a Level 1 electric shock punishment will be administered for five minutes. Please be more careful next time.]
The moment the words fell, Xie Mingyao’s head exploded with piercing pain. Her body lurched forward as a pained groan escaped her lips, “Ngh !”
Ye Qingyu dropped her notebook and caught Xie Mingyao, frowning in concern. “What’s wrong with you?”
“Mingyao-jie?” Zhou Ruohan, seeing the situation, rushed over and snatched Xie Mingyao from Ye Qingyu’s grasp, her face full of urgency and worry.
Xie Mingyao was in unbearable agony, her head feeling like it was about to split open. She couldn’t hear anything around her, biting down hard on her lower lip until it bled. Clutching her head, she wanted to writhe on the ground, her hands clenched into fists, the veins on the back of her hands standing out starkly.
“Mingyao-jie, should I take you to the hospital?” Tang Yan hurried over, alarmed by Xie Mingyao’s condition.
After all, Xie Mingyao was still the heiress of the Xie family and the fiancée of the Zhou family. If something happened to her in front of them, it would be a disaster.
But before she could act, Xie Mingyao gripped Ye Qingyu’s hand tightly, refusing to let go, her voice weak and trembling. “It hurts… it hurts so much…”
Ignoring the pain in her own hand, Ye Qingyu took in Xie Mingyao’s pale face and bleeding lip, sensing she was enduring some unbearable torment. An inexplicable emotion surged in her chest as she pulled Xie Mingyao back from Zhou Ruohan’s grasp, scooping her up in a bridal carry and rushing toward the stairs.
“What are you doing?!” Zhou Ruohan cried out, desperate to take her back.
Ye Qingyu sidestepped her, her voice calm but firm. “Don’t move, or she’ll fall.”
“Let Ye carry her. Getting to the hospital is the priority,” Tang Yan tugged at Zhou Ruohan’s arm, knowing a struggle on the stairs could lead to disaster.
Wang Yuzhen, trailing behind, felt a twinge of regret. If Zhou Ruohan had fought Ye Qingyu here and something happened, it would have been Ye Qingyu and Zhou Ruohan’s problem just the opportunity to get rid of Ye Qingyu.
But now was still a good chance.
Zhou Ruohan hesitated for a long time, but by the time Ye Qingyu reached the bottom of the stairs, she still hadn’t acted. She didn’t dare, if it was traced back to her, her life would be over.
Sprinting all the way to the infirmary, Zhou Ruohan and Tang Yan, who had been following behind, were stunned. They never imagined Ye Qingyu could possess such strength and stamina.
Although Xie Mingyao was slender and light, she still had some weight to her. Yet Ye Qingyu, also a girl, managed to carry Xie Mingyao from the third floor all the way down and then ran to the infirmary.
As soon as they arrived, she immediately called for the doctor.
“Quick, check her out, she suddenly got a terrible headache,” Zhou Ruohan urged, practically dragging the doctor by the hand to the bed in the rest area.
Ye Qingyu placed Xie Mingyao on the bed, but when she tried to pull her hand away, Xie Mingyao gripped it tightly, her nails digging into the same spot where she had bitten her earlier.
The doctor hurriedly took out a gauze pad. “Have her bite down on this.”
But Xie Mingyao refused to let go. Ye Qingyu’s face paled from the pain, yet she waved it off. “Check her first.”
However, the infirmary’s equipment was limited. Xie Mingyao was drenched in sweat from the pain, her mind hazy, and the doctor couldn’t find anything wrong.
Under the anxious gazes of the four, the doctor slowly shook his head. “The school infirmary doesn’t have the necessary equipment. I recommend going to the hospital for a proper examination.”
Just as he finished speaking, the system’s electric shock ended.
Xie Mingyao felt as though half her life had been drained. Weakly lying on the bed, her mouth, which had been clamped onto Ye Qingyu’s hand, finally loosened.
“Is she better now?” The doctor approached curiously and checked her again.
The girl who had been writhing in pain moments ago, as if electrocuted, had suddenly recovered. But no matter how much he examined her, he still couldn’t find anything wrong.
“This student… could there be something wrong with her brain? I suggest getting a CT scan at the hospital,” the doctor said carefully after some thought.
Zhou Ruohan, Tang Yan, and Wang Yuzhen exchanged uneasy glances.
Ye Qingyu pulled back her badly bitten hand, glanced at Xie Mingyao now soaked in sweat then took out tissues from her bag and bent down to wipe her face.
“Let me treat your hand first. At least the bite was disinfected.”
“What’s that supposed to mean? Are you calling our Mingyao a dog?!” Wang Yuzhen snapped angrily.
Xie Mingyao, overwhelmed by the noise, weakly turned her head to glare at the troublemaker and murmured faintly, “Get out.”
“Mingyao-jie?” Wang Yuzhen’s eyes widened in disbelief.
Xie Mingyao exhaled weakly. “Too noisy. Ruohan, get them all out.”
Zhou Ruohan, who always obeyed Xie Mingyao, promptly pushed Wang Yuzhen and the others out. The infirmary’s rest area fell silent at once.
The doctor glanced at Ye Qingyu’s injury and said softly, “Let me help you with that hand.”
“It’s fine.” Ye Qingyu lowered her gaze to Xie Mingyao, who looked half-dead, then pulled the blanket over her and tucked her in.
Xie Mingyao lay still, eyes closed, letting her adjust the blanket without protest. Her dark hair fanned out across the white pillow, her breathing steady as if she had already fallen asleep.
The doctor couldn’t help but remark to Xie Mingyao, “This classmate of yours treats you really well. Look at what you’ve done to her hand.”
If this had been a guy, he would’ve assumed there was something between them.
Xie Mingyao slowly opened her eyes, her gaze landing on the mangled flesh of Ye Qingyu’s hand. Her lips parted slightly, as if she wanted to say something, but she was too exhausted to muster any strength.
“Rest first,” Ye Qingyu said, stopping her before she could speak, then turned and walked out.
The doctor also stepped out, retrieving alcohol and cotton swabs from the counter. Ye Qingyu lowered her head to disinfect herself, enduring the entire process in silence without uttering a word.
Xie Mingyao slept straight through until nearly evening. When she woke up, the driver was sitting outside, waiting for her. After this long rest, Xie Mingyao had regained her strength and felt refreshed as she rode back in the car.
In the car, Xie Mingyao gazed out the window at the passing scenery while asking the system:
“That voice before the electric shock earlier, it wasn’t you, was it?”
The system replied gravely:
“No, it wasn’t. That was the Heavenly Dao monitoring the dimensional world. The moment it detects anomalies, it delivers an electric shock as punishment.” After a pause, the system added earnestly:
“So, Host, you really must be careful next time. Don’t break character again.”
Xie Mingyao shrugged helplessly and said:
“How was I supposed to know the female lead was so sharp she’d notice such a tiny detail?”
Just as she spoke, the private car passed by an alley, and a familiar voice suddenly rang out from within.
“Get lost, or we’ll both end up hurt!”
