- Chapter 11 - The Misunderstood "Sneak Attack"
“Great Demon Lord, did you see him?” 998 waddled forward on its two chicken legs, approaching with extreme caution.
This cross-world “video call” had only lasted a minute. There was no helping it; bridging dimensions was prohibitively expensive. Although it had warned the Demon Lord beforehand that the time would be short, the silence following Gu Chi’s return made the System’s circuits jitter with anxiety.
It felt like he was brewing some sort of catastrophic ultimate move!
Gu Chi sat on the sofa, his brow furrowed in deep thought. After a long silence, he finally spoke. “Did he launch a sneak attack on me?”
As if he had finally found the logical answer, he repeated it with more certainty: “That’s right. He definitely caught me off guard with a sneak attack!”
A moment later, he flared up in a sudden rage. “He actually dared to ambush me?!” And the most infuriating part was that the boy had been smiling so happily while doing it!
998: “? I don’t think that’s possible.”
Given the host’s personality, there was no way he would ambush Gu Chi. He was the most obedient person the System had ever seen when it came to the Demon Lord.
The System couldn’t help but ask, “Could you explain exactly what happened?”
Gu Chi frowned. “The moment he lunged at me, my body froze, and my internal energy became chaotic. I don’t remember him learning such a technique, and I certainly never taught it to him. Where did he pick up a move that paralyzes the senses like that?”
998: “………………”
The chick’s beady little eyes took on a very strange light.
My god, are we really doing this?
It took a few bold glances at Gu Chi and realized, to its shock, that the Great Demon Lord truly believed what he was saying. Wait, this guy has lived for centuries or even millennia has he literally spent every single day just killing people and monsters? Has he never even been on a date?
How is he more innocent than a System?
Thinking back on all the terror and suffering it had endured these past few days, a wicked plan began to bubble up from 998’s data sea. It let out a quiet, internal cackle before assuming a serious and professional tone. “You’re right! I’ve never seen the host use that move either. He must have learned it in secret specifically to deal with you!”
“I never would have thought. sigh. It’s all because you taught him too well. He learned everything and even kept a trump card for himself!”
“When you see him again, you absolutely have to give him a piece of your mind!”
The more Gu Chi listened, the deeper his frown became. It seemed like that made sense, yet something still felt fundamentally wrong.
He looked down and saw the chick wearing a disgusting, suspicious grin, so he promptly slapped it into the air again.
As 998 flew through the sky, its feathered face was twisted with silent rage: Screw you, Gu Chi! Just you wait—there will come a day when you’re the one crying! Hehehe!
Wen Linyu slept so soundly he didn’t want to wake up. He had dreamed of his teacher and had even been bold enough to hug him. The sensation had felt so real that he found himself longing for more.
However, since he had never truly seen his teacher’s face, the man’s features in the dream had remained a blur.
But being able to see him in a dream at all was a wonderful thing.
Linyu was satisfied with just that. He woke up in a great mood, which only improved when he heard that Wen Hongbo had suddenly been diagnosed with a series of mysterious illnesses at the hospital.
The butler was still muttering in confusion, “How is this possible? President Wen’s annual checkups always show he’s perfectly healthy…”
Wen Linyu acted as if it had nothing to do with him. He calmly ate his breakfast while planning where to go for fun or what to buy after school.
At the same time, in the best hospital in City A.
The occupants of several VIP rooms were incredibly agitated. The loudest and most chaotic was the patient who had been transferred in just this morning.
This patient was Wu Shuhao. Since being found in the abandoned building the day before, he had suffered from a persistent high fever and remained in a deep coma.
The Wu parents were frantic. Convinced the doctors at the previous hospital were hacks, they had moved him to this private facility. However, after a full battery of tests, the results remained exactly the same.
The diagnosis was that Wu Shuhao had simply suffered a severe fright. His fever was the result of spending a night in the cold wind of an unfinished building while his pants were wet with urine.
As for why he wouldn’t wake up, the doctors offered many complex explanations, but the Wu parents had no patience for them. They wanted their precious son awake right now.
Mrs. Wu was swearing up a storm, cursing the heavens and, most of all, Wen Linyu. As his parents, they knew exactly why their son had been at that abandoned building at night.
They had also heard about Wen Linyu beating up Wu Shujie on Monday. Wu Shuhao had clearly intended to drag Wen Linyu there for a “talk,” but for some reason, Wen Linyu wasn’t the one lying in a hospital bed—their son was.
The Wu parents were beyond furious, wishing they could tear Linyu into pieces. Why wasn’t he the one suffering?!
They didn’t care at all that their son had been the one to lure Wen Linyu there. For years, they had been accustomed to blaming Linyu for everything. They only refrained from hunting him down now because they had to look after their son; otherwise, they would have caught him and beaten him senseless already.
Why wouldn’t they? They treated Wen Linyu with total disregard because he was someone even his own parents didn’t want. He had no backing, they had deliberately kept his health poor, and his personality was too timid to ever resist. Hitting him was simply too easy.
Perhaps it was because they were being too loud, but Wu Shuhao, who had been unconscious for a day, suddenly woke up.
The parents were overjoyed, but their happiness lasted only a second. The awakened Wu Shuhao was even more violent than they were. Despite his fever, he had the strength to throw people and objects across the room. Within moments, the VIP ward was a disaster zone.
In the end, it took a heavy dose of sedatives to quiet him down.
However, the medication only worked for a short time. He either remained unconscious or woke up only to destroy things, seemingly unable to recognize even his own parents as he attacked them indiscriminately.
This situation terrified the Wu parents. A passing patient glanced inside and muttered, “Looks like he’s possessed.”
Mrs. Wu cursed the passerby out, but she took the words to heart. Later, they brought in an Occult Master. One look was all it took for the Master to understand.
Wu Shuhao had gone to a malevolent place and run into something that scared a fragment of his soul right out of his body. He needed a soul-retrieval ritual to return to normal.
The Wu family began frantically preparing for the ritual, causing quite a commotion. On the floors above them, things were equally chaotic.
President Wen and Lin Wanxiu were staying a few floors up. When they first entered the hospital, their injuries were minor, but for some reason, their physical condition had plummeted overnight. It was as if they had aged ten years in a single evening.
They sensed something was wrong and immediately blamed it on Wen Linyu’s refusal to stay in that specific basement room. They seethed with hatred.
They began plotting a way to lock Linyu up permanently so he could never leave his room again. It couldn’t be at the villa anymore since too many people had seen what happened; they would have to find a new, more isolated location.
Wen Linyu didn’t care about any of that. His seat in class was by the window, and he was currently squinting, enjoying the warmth of the sun.
The temperature was perfect, and the breeze was pleasant, carrying a hint of floral fragrance.
The scent reminded him of a riverbank that grew similar flowers. He didn’t recall ever smelling this particular scent in Gu Chi’s world.
Mmh, I’ll go for a walk there after school, he thought. And I’ll get an iced lemonade.
True to his plan, Linyu went to the riverbank as soon as school ended.
The river was on the outskirts of the city a wide, majestic body of water with beautiful scenery and a wetland park along its banks. Linyu found the flowers and admired the view, but the sight made him wish he could share it with his teacher.
Unfortunately, that was impossible.
Feeling a bit of regret, Linyu stayed there for a long time.
What he didn’t know was that in another world, someone was staring at him through the “Mirror Pool” just as intently.
998, who had crawled back to the Demon Lord’s side, wore a “darkened” smile. “Great Demon Lord, do you want to see the host again tonight? I borrowed some energy from a colleague; I should be able to manage about five minutes.”
Gu Chi’s dark eyes flickered. His expression remained stoic, and his tone was as cold as ever. “Of course.”
But 998’s beady eyes flashed with realization. Something is wrong! There is definitely something wrong here!
If it were before, this guy would have intimidated it, threatened it, or questioned why it hadn’t borrowed the energy sooner. But right now? Nothing!
He didn’t care where the energy came from; he only cared about seeing his little disciple as soon as possible.
The biggest giveaway was that this arrogant Demon Lord hadn’t even ordered the System to “borrow more” so he could be sent over immediately. He was so anxious that he’d forgotten his usual domineering behavior!
Hahahaha! The opportunity for revenge is finally here!
998 wanted to howl at the moon. Instead, it dutifully reconnected Gu Chi to Wen Linyu’s dream.
Perhaps because he had walked along the river during the day, Wen Linyu’s dream featured water as well.
It wasn’t the realistic river from the city but a fairy-tale stream—crystal clear, with those fragrant flowers blooming along the banks. Wen Linyu was swimming in the water, bobbing up and down, as fragmented sunlight danced across his damp hair, face, and skin.
The moment Gu Chi entered the dream, he was met with this exact scene.
Once again, his entire body went rigid. He couldn’t believe it. What is happening to me?
Is that bird sabotaging me? Is it trying to kill me in this dreamscape?
