Chapter 8: Buying BL Manga with Wei Yinhe
A dazzling array of snacks and stationery lined the shelves, and students were packed inside and outside the shop like sardines.
Gu Buwang wore a mask, revealing only his handsome, narrow phoenix eyes. His body was shrunk beneath his jacket and hat, as if he wished he could wrap himself in a vacuum-sealed bag. Every time he touched someone, it felt like ants were crawling all over him—suffocating. In the past, Wei Yinhe was always there to shield him from the crowd; his backpack and Wei Yinhe’s presence formed a safety zone.
People are always getting used to the things they aren’t used to.
A boy stood with his back to Gu Buwang, facing a vast sea of colorful books. His downcast, pensive expression looked as if he were trapped in a world-class dilemma. The books featured exquisite character designs and flamboyant, flowery fonts; two male protagonists held each other, surrounded by pink bubbles, their gazes so sweet they could practically turn into honey.
Occasionally, two girls would pass by. Noticing their sidelong glances, the boy shrunk his neck and gripped the edges of his clothes, hurriedly grabbing a book with a purple back cover. After leaving the shop, he carried a black plastic bag.
The boy walked up to a red-haired youth. The red-haired youth was looking down at his phone; he merely crooked his right index finger. The boy reached into the other’s backpack, fished out a black leather wallet, and handed it to him. The red-haired youth pulled out a few bills with his long, honey-colored fingers; the boy took the wallet back with practiced coordination and stuffed it back into the backpack.
During the entire process, they didn’t exchange a single word, looking exactly like a young master and his servant from an old aristocratic manor. Gu Buwang watched this, feeling both shocked and angry.
Originally just there to buy pen refills, Gu Buwang followed them into a restaurant as well. They sat at a table in the back, the walls plastered with photos of Hong Kong male stars. An awkwardness hung between the two, thick enough to make one’s toes curl like octopus tentacles.
Wei Yinhe gripped his phone so hard the veins on the back of his hand bulged. He struggled to open his mouth, his expression looking as if he had just swallowed half a bowl of wasabi. “Did you… buy that thing?”
“Bought it.”
Su Chengguang thought of his desk mate—a quiet, refined girl who turned out to be a hardcore BL fan.
Wei Yinhe ruffled his hair and looked up, his sharp canines faintly visible as he spoke. “What is He Manman thinking? Why did she make you go buy extracurricular books?”
“She helped me hand in my homework a few times, and since she doesn’t have a day-student pass, she can’t get out. She could only entrust it to me.”
He Manman was his desk mate and Wei Yinhe’s cousin—a girl who was great at drawing and had even won city-level awards. When she heard her brother was going out with Su Chengguang, she giggled behind her hand, a spark of excitement in her eyes. “Two boys going to buy BL… that’s just too cute.”
Su Chengguang didn’t understand this shy yet bold hobby, but since it wasn’t anything illegal like murder or arson, he expressed understanding and respect.
Wei Yinhe couldn’t do it. He frowned deeply. “I really don’t get her. Is this stuff really that good? Two guys being all romantic is just too weird.”
In Wei Yinhe’s eyes, men were categorized only as “brothers” or “idiots.” If he were asked to hug a hard, brawny man, he would definitely vomit.
Su Chengguang propped his elbows on the table, a trace of mischief flashing in his peach-blossom eyes. “If you’re curious, why don’t you take a look? He Manman has plenty of novels and manga.”
“Have you seen them?”
“I’ve looked when I was bored. The first time I saw it, it was actually quite interesting.”
“Forget it… doesn’t your class ban idle books?”
Su Chengguang: “It’s precisely because they aren’t allowed that people read them; that’s where the thrill is.”
Feeling that words weren’t enough to convey the sentiment, he gave a knowing wink—his right eye shutting while his left remained watery and bright, sending a wink straight to Wei Yinhe’s face.
Wei Yinhe: “…”
“Teacher, may I come in?”
A handsome, beautiful youth stood at the door, blocking the radiant glow of the sunset, which created a brilliant halo around his head. At first glance, it looked like a bald vulture’s shiny head.
Hahahahaha.
Gu Buwang frowned. “What’s wrong with you?”
Su Chengguang quickly controlled his expression. “Nothing.” He thought to himself: No kidding, even if he were bald, Gu Buwang would be the best-looking bald guy around.
He picked up his homework, his black hair covering his eyes, which looked well-behaved and innocent behind his black-rimmed glasses. “Then, Teacher, I’ll be heading back.”
Old Liu called him back, rubbing his own smooth scalp. “Chengguang, moving you to Class 6 is the thing I’m least worried about. It’s just that your English is a bit lopsided. Student Gu has great English grades; I was thinking of having you two form a study pair.”
Su Chengguang dazed. Study pairs were the easiest way to end up in a “puppy love” situation. Although he had no intention of dating, would Gu Buwang even agree? “I have no problem with it, but would it disturb Student Gu?”
“I’m willing!” Gu Buwang took a step forward, his gaze serious and solemn, like he was taking an oath under the national flag. Meeting Su Chengguang’s startled expression, he froze, looking away as if he’d been electrocuted and staring intently at the cactus on the neighboring teacher’s desk.
“Great,” Old Liu smiled, his face full of wrinkles. “Then I’ll leave it to Student Gu. I hope you two get along well in the future.”
Su Chengguang somehow saw the ice beneath the mountain beginning to melt. Although Gu Buwang still wore that calm, unruffled mask, a smile as faint as jasmine bloomed in the depths of his eyes.
After leaving the office, Su Chengguang silently kept a Pacific Ocean-sized distance, out of respect for Gu Buwang’s germophobia.
However, Gu Buwang unexpectedly leaned in, his tone dropping ice shards. “Are you disgusted by me?”
“Ah? No, no.”
“Then you’re avoiding me. Why? Because you are Wei Yinhe’s person?”
“What does it have to do with him? I’m nobody’s person.” Regarding Wei Yinhe, Su Chengguang treated it like punching a clock at work—he didn’t have a single improper thought.
Gu Buwang’s expression was calm, like a deep blue, bottomless sea. “Then why did you follow him?”
Su Chengguang was very honest. “Because I can get full by following him.”
This meant many things: Wei Yinhe was generous and wealthy, and his “blood vitality” was high-quality—he was essentially a versatile meal ticket.
“I see.”
Gu Buwang understood. It turned out the problem he had researched for half a day could be solved in one step. Wei Yinhe had a terrible temper and was as loud as a firecracker; “difficult to serve” was practically written on his face. For someone to endure that without smashing a plate, it must be because they couldn’t forget the allure of money and power.
Now that he knew why, he could lure the person away. He would make Wei Yinhe lose his favorite brother as a way to vent his own deep-seated anger.
“About the question from last time… did you ask Wei Yinhe?”
“I did.” Su Chengguang’s tone was gloomy, full of the regret of someone who missed out on the gossip. “He said you two just had a little conflict.”
Gu Buwang raised an eyebrow. “What did he say?”
“He said his dog bit you on the butt, and you wanted to kill the dog, but Wei Yinhe wouldn’t let you, so you two fell out.”
Gu Buwang’s dark eyes turned heavy, his tone carrying the oppression of a gathering storm. “A dog that can speak human language… it really would be a pity to kill it.”
Once the exam results came out, some families were happy while others were worried. On the school forum, someone was interviewing people about their feelings.
“Thanks for the invite. The results came out at night; the person was gone by morning.”
“The Shengde Tech Building: one leap to solve a thousand sorrows.”
“I only beat 90% of my classmates; my Ant Forest grew again.”
Su Chengguang was surfing the web on his “Little Smart” PHS during the break. After scrolling through a few comments, he received a message from Li Mingyang.
Li Mingyang: “Que Ling Terrace, Room 402. Wei-ge is hosting. Bring Gu Buwang. Come quickly.”
Su Chengguang really wanted to reply with three question marks, but as a “lackey,” he had to be on call. Just as he was typing, his sleeve was tugged by his desk mate. “Su Chengguang, someone is looking for you.”
He looked up. There was that guy Li Mingyang, leaning against the doorframe, waving at him with a beaming smile.
