Chapter 5: He is My Brother
Previously, the young girl had rejected countless dance invitations, yet she proactively sought out someone standing outside the dance floor.
By gorging himself before the banquet had even truly begun, Su Chengguang was undoubtedly an outsider—crude, like a country bumpkin. But to Bai Ya, everything felt just right. “July 24, 2023: I, Bai Ya, met my crush, the 101st heartbeat guest.”
Bai Ya released the hand of the dark-skinned youth and stepped toward the boy who looked as if he were under a spotlight, offering a bright “Hi.”
“Hello, my name is Bai Ya.”
Though surprised, Su Chengguang placed his left hand over his chest and bowed gentlemanly. “Hello, I am Su Chengguang.”
“Would you like to dance with me?”
“Uh… I don’t know how to dance.”
Bai Ya’s face beamed with a smile. Perfect! I love the ones who reject me; it shows taste. To the children of the upper class, social dancing was as familiar as the multiplication tables. However, Su Chengguang, a “fish that escaped the net,” was not part of that world.
The dark-skinned handsome guy frowned. Like a white knight guarding Bai Ya, he spoke up immediately upon hearing this: “To make a lady feel embarrassed… sir, you lack grace.”
The translated formal tone made Su Chengguang’s teeth ache with cringe. Having just been led in by Li Mingyang, he had already been baptized by a circle of people. Su Chengguang sincerely marveled; it was a pity these people weren’t stage actors with their operatic cadences.
Bai Ya shot the dark-skinned youth a glance, her smile blooming like a flower. “Boys should be straightforward to be sincere.” Hearing the hidden meaning, the “knight” choked on his words. Knowing Bai Ya’s heart wasn’t on him, the defeated knight retreated gloomily.
Standing closer, Bai Ya discovered a moe point: “You look so cute, but you’re actually quite tall.”
Like a gardener being praised for a beautiful flower, Su Chengguang’s eyes lit up instantly, selectively ignoring the first half of the sentence. “I’m 1.8 meters tall.”
Because he frequently sought out Wei Yinhe for meals, his vitality was abundant, making him look increasingly radiant; even his steps up and down the stairs felt lighter. He had recently hit a second growth spurt, his height shooting up to 1.8 meters like the tallest cornstalk in the field.
Li Mingyang found him more irritating by the second. This guy had been snatched away by a noblewoman as soon as he entered to meet people.
The air was as cold as marble, and Bai Ya began to regret not bringing a shawl. Seeing her rub her arms, her skirt swaying like a startled jasmine flower, Su Chengguang asked, “Are you cold?”
Bai Ya lowered her arms. “A little.”
“Pity this is a faux two-piece outfit, otherwise I’d definitely take it off for you.” The boy’s tone carried a hint of banter, making the atmosphere feel like clouds wrapped in cream.
Bai Ya felt that if a cake had consciousness, it wouldn’t be able to resist such a deep gaze. She stepped forward in her small heels, her hem spreading out like a large fan, clustering like flowers around the boy’s knees. “Since you’re so tall, surely you can block the wind for me?”
The hall’s AC blew downward with a whir, making the leaves of the green plants tremble. The distance between them was precarious; if someone were to bump into them, they would surely collide.
From a distance, Wei Yinhe saw the interaction between the boy and the girl, and a flash of displeasure crossed his face. Leaning that close… is she trying to stuff herself into Su Chengguang’s arms? He had only looked away for a moment and the boy was already attracting butterflies. Truly, Su Chengguang could not be left alone.
When he wasn’t smiling, his aura was formidable. With furrowed brows, he looked like a dark storm cloud about to break, scaring away several people who wanted to approach. A gap opened in the dance floor as Wei Yinhe walked through the crowd.
Su Chengguang had never dealt with this kind of situation. He didn’t even dare touch the girl’s exposed, round, short arms. He stammered, “How about… you eat something? If you eat something hot, you won’t be cold.”
The girl widened her eyes and scolded him playfully, “Don’t move! If you move, the cold air blows right on me.”
Uh… Su Chengguang, wanting to move but not daring to, froze, his expression looking as if he had encountered a world-class dilemma.
Suddenly, an arm hooked around his neck, forcefully pulling him backward. As if attacked by a wild beast, Su Chengguang’s muscles tensed instantly. Under the familiar scent, he clenched his palms and allowed himself to fall into a lair-like embrace. The satin-like suit fabric pressed against his clean collarbone and neck, feeling as smooth and cool as an air-conditioned quilt.
“Finally found you.” The voice was deep and magnetic, carrying a sigh of suppressed release.
Su Chengguang’s frantically beating heart felt a jolt of electricity; he suppressed the urge to cover his tingling ears. The young girl was also startled, taking a good while to find her soul again. She met Wei Yinhe’s dangerous, predatory eyes, which seemed to burn with an infernal fire capable of scorching the soul.
“…Brother Wei.”
Wei Yinhe looked down, meeting a pair of eyes like a startled deer’s, and slowly revealed a harmless smile. “Why didn’t you come find me?”
Being in this posture was a bit awkward, but fortunately, Wei Yinhe let go before Su Chengguang became too uncomfortable. Su Chengguang breathed a sigh of relief as if surviving a disaster, the scattered light in his peach-blossom eyes gathering into starry highlights. “I didn’t know where you were.”
“Didn’t I tell Li Mingyang to bring you over?”
“He was called away by someone and told me to wait until you were finished before looking for you.”
Wei Yinhe’s hand rested on his shoulder. His sharp-featured face was cold, practically dropping ice shards. “Why do I feel like you didn’t really want to see me?”
No gift = Don’t meet Wei Yinhe.
Being seen through, Su Chengguang laughed it off. “How could that be? Li Mingyang said you were busy. I thought you’d be tired today and shouldn’t be disturbed.”
Su Chengguang: Li Mingyang is definitely taking the fall for this one.
Wei Yinhe sighed. “It seems I haven’t given you enough of a sense of security.”
Su Chengguang: …Stop joking, man. You’re a Boss, what kind of status do you need to give a lackey?
Wei Yinhe finally remembered Bai Ya, who had been left aside. Bai Ya lifted her skirt and bowed in greeting, her long hair falling to reveal a section of her white neck. Wei Yinhe nodded, his smile brighter and more youthful than a pop star on a poster. “Hello, Little Sister Bai Ya.”
His fingertips brushed against Su Chengguang’s palm, silently tightening his grip, and he said intimately to Bai Ya, “This is my brother, Su Chengguang.”
Bai Ya caught the meaning immediately. “So it’s Young Master Su. No wonder I liked him at first sight; the reason lies with you.”
“I’ve always pampered him like a younger brother.”
Su Chengguang looked up in bewilderment. Was this giving him the backing to challenge others? Chengguang: …Who is your brother? I’m going to throw a fit!
Wei Yinhe led him to meet a succession of people. Initially, Wei Yinhe was polite and measured, but as soon as Su Chengguang was mentioned, his smile became more genuine. He talked about “Brother Su” incessantly, like a fanatic with a brother-complex.
The circle of confusion in Su Chengguang’s heart grew larger, nearly swallowing the earth. He extended a tentative claw: “I want to eat cookies. Go get me some.”
Wei Yinhe asked about his preferred flavor and actually went off with a plate. The batch on the other side was freshly baked and crispier; Wei Yinhe took a long detour and returned with two plates in hand. Su Chengguang didn’t understand, but that didn’t stop him from eating. Under the “vitality” that acted like a perfect side-dish, his appetite surged until he finally felt a long-awaited sense of fullness.
Fearing he would be bored with no company, Wei Yinhe called over He Wuhai. During this time, Su Chengguang went to the restroom.
He Wuhai leaned against the table, glancing at the small cookies in Wei Yinhe’s hand. “You don’t seem like the type to enjoy such sweet things.”
“These are for Xiao Su.”
He Wuhai let out a snorting laugh. “Su Chengguang isn’t more than a few months younger than us. Gu Buwang is actually the youngest; don’t talk down to him.”
At the mention of Gu Buwang, a surge of irritability rose in Wei Yinhe. After a moment of silence, he said solemnly, “He won’t be my ‘lackey’ anymore. Xiao… Su Chengguang is our equal. We are all good brothers; don’t order him around anymore.”
Su Chengguang was too easy-going; he usually bought water and lunch for Wei Yinhe, and even for Li Mingyang and the others. He was so silly he didn’t even know to ask for the money back.
He Wuhai rubbed his fingertips. “Fine, I’ll tell them.” He didn’t actually care about that; his biggest impression of Su Chengguang was that of a very useful errand boy. What truly gave him a headache was Gu Buwang—over a decade of friendship, and to turn hostile just like that… it was heart-chilling.
He pulled at his tight tie, leaving the half-undone strap hanging from his collar. The wind from above felt refreshingly cool. “I saw Gu Buwang earlier.”
This out-of-the-blue statement made Wei Yinhe freeze.
“He went into a second-floor private booth with Wei Hujing. I heard he’s going to enter the Gu Group; he’s losing no time in paving his own way. If the Old Lady finds out, she’ll nag you again.”
Their own people couldn’t even be kept; one by one, they were swimming toward Wei Hujing like fish entering the sea. Wei Yinhe wasn’t good at dealing with the Old Lady; staying under the same roof as her required taking two Ibuprofen in advance.
He pinched the bridge of his nose, a bone-deep exhaustion weighing on his brow. “She has always disliked Little Uncle. I can’t control what happens over there. From now on, whatever he wants to do has nothing to do with me.”
This was an intent to ignore Gu Buwang.
He Wuhai let out an “Eh.” “I really don’t understand your family’s Old Lady. Both are her sons, so why does she practice this ‘skipped-generation’ favoritism?”
Wei Yinhe pursed his lips, his expression becoming slightly stern. Regarding private family secrets, it was hard for him to speak. Who could have thought that the illustrious Wei Hujing, the second young master of the Wei family, was gay?
The Wei family’s lineage was thinning, with only Wei Hujing and Wei Yinhe left in the direct line. Due to the Old Lady’s persistence, the position of heir had been vacant for years. Wei Yinhe had been told since childhood: The Wei family is yours; you must never let Wei Hujing take it.
A pair of polished leather shoes appeared before him. Lifting his head, he saw Gu Buwang’s eyes, cold as ink. His voice was like a freezing mountain spring.
“Can we talk?”
When Su Chengguang returned, he saw the two acquaintances passing through the hall like conjoined twins. They went through the glass doors and into the deep, shaded garden paths. Arriving at a deserted fountain planter, Gu Buwang suddenly turned around.
“Why do you want to sentence Su Chengguang to death?”
Death?
Wei Yinhe had never expected Gu Buwang to slap such a massive accusation on him. He was beyond furious. “I thought you wanted to talk about the issues between us, and this is it? You came here just to make me angry?”
Gu Buwang’s face darkened. This person would never realize his own mistakes. “Now everyone at the banquet knows you have a biological younger brother—that there’s a third young master in the Wei family. By tomorrow, Su Chengguang’s name will be in the headlines. Are you telling me you don’t intend to use him as a sacrificial lamb for the succession struggle?”
Wei Yinhe froze. He hadn’t thought that far. He only wanted to be good to him.
