- Chapter 1 - An Accidental Engagement
Failed Ascension, but I Got a Wife
The night was deep and serene. The Capital Planet was, as usual, a spectacle of neon lights, song, and dance.
Suddenly, a massive bolt of lightning, spanning hundreds of miles, tore through the starry night sky. The area beneath the lightning was instantly bright as day.
The edges of the electric arc cutting across the horizon formed a striking contrast with the pitch-black night, creating a thin, gorgeous layer of purple within the collision of light and shadow, as if the sky had been baptized by lightning and was bleeding from its wounds.
However, a Duke’s mansion beneath the storm remained completely unaffected. Inside the banquet hall, guests continued to mingle, and the rooms upstairs remained dead silent.
The soundproofing in the room had long been activated, and the curtains were drawn tight. The dazzling light from the sky could only penetrate the room as a faint glow, barely revealing the blurry, dim outlines of the furniture.
Yu Qianyan groaned and woke up. Her first sensation was pain.
The soreness and weakness throughout her body were bearable, but her head throbbed with agony, as if her master had hammered her in the back of the head three hundred times with a sword hilt, and then each of her unruly junior disciples had taken a turn clubbing her as well.
The pain was overwhelming and bizarre. Yu Qianyan relied on her willpower as a sword cultivator to suppress it. After a moment, once she had adjusted slightly, she finally had the mental capacity to observe her surroundings.
She lay on a bed soft as a cloud, made of a strange material she had never seen before. While the furniture in the room had an ancient aesthetic, a closer look revealed it to be disjointed, awkward, and out of place.
Most bizarrely, there was not a shred of spiritual energy here. This was not the so-called Immortal Realm.
Had she been kidnapped by someone, or had she ascended to the wrong place?
Just as she was pondering, Yu Qianyan froze. A soft, lingering moan came from beside her.
There was someone else in the bed!
It was difficult to describe that sound. Yu Qianyan felt a tingling sensation travel from her earlobes all the way to her tailbone. Her skin crawled, beads of sweat formed on her forehead, and at the same time, a seductive fragrance began to coil around her nose.
The fragrance started off cool and slightly bitter, but as it grew stronger, it revealed its sweet, bewitching essence. Even the tip of her tongue seemed to be soaked in that intoxicating, enchanting aroma, evoking a familiar, inexplicable stirring in her heart.
Her gums itched, and a strange heat surged in her chest, urging her to do something.
Her distraction lasted only a moment. In the blink of an eye, Yu Qianyan regained her composure and noticed the anomaly. The sound the person beside her had made was not out of seduction, but rather sounded like a cry for help that had been stifled for too long.
This person was likely in physical distress.
Yu Qianyan frowned and reached out in the person’s direction, touching skin that was delicate and burning hot.
Yu Qianyan withdrew her hand decisively. After a second of silence, she moved a little to the side.
The woman was naked, and her body was scorching hot, as if she were running a fever. She needed to find a way to help her cool down.
With that thought, Yu Qianyan temporarily set aside her confusion and prepared to get out of bed to fetch some water to wipe the woman down, lest she burn her brain out.
However, as soon as she stood up, the headache she had suppressed returned a hundredfold, carrying countless shards of consciousness that drilled into her mind, causing excruciating pain.
Because this feeling was similar to receiving a legacy in the past, Yu Qianyan did not resist. Who would have thought that this seemingly provided encouragement to the pain? It surged in even more aggressively, as if trying to stuff the information of the entire universe into her brain in a single instant.
It was like trying to fit an elephant into a wine glass.
After barely managing to endure it, her mind remained in chaos. As she struggled to sort through the countless swirling memories, she still kept in mind her plan to cool the person on the bed.
As a result, when she took a step, her legs were so weak that she couldn’t even stand. She collapsed back onto the bed, half her body pinning the “patient” down, eliciting a muffled groan from her.
Caught off guard, Yu Qianyan locked eyes with the “patient,” who had opened her eyes at some point. Her heart skipped a beat.
In the cultivation world, spiritual energy nourished the skin, and there were countless beauties. Yu Qianyan was famous for only having eyes for her sword, even more indifferent to outward appearances than the Buddhist cultivators of the Golden Light Temple. Yet, even she could not help but be captivated for a moment by the stunning beauty before her.
She gathered her focus and took a breath. Only then did she realize the other person was still in a daze. Her phoenix eyes were half-open, her gaze unfocused, and her red lips slightly parted. Especially in the dimness of the room, she looked just like a bewitching ghost from a horror story trying to turn over a new leaf for love.
Yu Qianyan thought that if this beautiful and weak woman hadn’t met her, she would likely have been devoured without even bones left behind.
Suddenly, chaotic footsteps rang out outside the door. Clearly, a group of people was rapidly approaching.
Without time to think, Yu Qianyan immediately grabbed the quilt and wrapped the person up tightly.
In her haste, her right thumb accidentally brushed against the soft curves of the other person’s chest. She retracted her hand as if burned by the body heat, yet the contact still caused the “patient” to let out an irrepressible shudder and a soft moan. Yu Qianyan’s earlobes itched, and she averted her gaze.
As soon as she finished wrapping her, the door was kicked open with a bang. Several servants rushed in to turn on the lights and ventilate the room. One person stepped forward to inject the “patient” with a shot, while the others stood cautiously at the door.
Once the room was flooded with light and the bewitching fragrance vanished, the rest of the group entered, standing in a large crowd.
When the door opened, Yu Qianyan had been half-sitting, half-kneeling on the bed, her hand still resting on the quilt that wrapped the person. To some, the scene looked undeniably ambiguous, even though she jumped off the bed immediately, it had been seen clearly by all who entered.
The person leading the charge had a dark expression, staring at Yu Qianyan with a gaze fierce enough to eat someone. It was Yu Qishan, Yu Qianyan’s current “mother.”
However, before Yu Qishan could speak, a thin, sallow-faced man behind the crowd suddenly howled, “My poor, innocent daughter! How could you run into such a thing!”
He made as if to throw himself into the room, but was blocked by an imposing man beside Yu Qishan. He received a cold glare and immediately stood still, looking docile.
Yu Qishan’s death stare immediately shifted to the sallow man. “That is your daughter?”
The sallow man gave Yu Qishan a fawning smile, trotting over to bow and scrape. “Yes, yes! Duke, that is indeed my daughter, Rong Shu. She is an Omega who just came of age this year, only three years younger than Miss Yu.”
Seeing Yu Qishan’s expression turn sour, the man’s fawning attitude changed instantly. He began to wail loudly again, as if wishing for everyone present to hear him clearly.
“Oh, this is the first time our Rong Shu has socialized since she came of age! Earlier at the banquet, Miss Yu came to me specifically to say that Rong Shu was extremely beautiful and told me to watch over her carefully. But who would have thought, in the blink of an eye, she would go missing, and, and this would happen… Really, I am truly… Oh!”
By now, even Yu Qianyan, whose brain was still a chaotic mess, understood the implication. She vaguely realized that she, the Duke’s daughter, had been framed. The shrewd people present understood it even better, and murmurs broke out among them.
However, no matter how much they implicitly understood the situation, it did not change the reality of the scene before them.
Yu Qishan reacted extremely quickly. She laughed heartily, her voice resonant and seemingly gratified. “Good, good, good! Rong Shu, is it? A good child. No wonder Qianyan fell for you at first sight. Since you two have already pledged your hearts to each other, I am not some old stick-in-the-mud. I understand the impulsiveness of you young people. Since everyone is here, let me take advantage of the occasion and set the marriage date for these two children right here.”
“Mr. Rong, what do you think?”
Yu Qishan looked at the sallow man. The latter was full of joy, looking as if he wanted to kneel and kowtow to Yu Qishan right then and there. Naturally, he agreed immediately.
“Mother!”
Yu Qianyan let out an exclamation, and the crowd’s gaze shifted to her.
Yu Qishan’s brows furrowed in anger. “What? You think an engagement is too slow, and you want to get married directly?”
Yu Qianyan was not frightened by Yu Qishan’s aura. This level of intimidation was nothing compared to when her master was so angry she leveled the main peak of another sect with a single sword stroke. She naturally didn’t take it to heart.
But the key was, she practiced the Heartless Dao!
What kind of proper Heartless Dao practitioner would marry a Dao companion? She wasn’t some pervert planning to kill her wife to achieve enlightenment.
Although Yu Qianyan hadn’t had time to sort out the situation, she only vaguely knew she had ascended to the wrong place. Furthermore, there was no spiritual energy here, so she couldn’t cultivate, and she didn’t know if there was a way to return.
But she had never been the type to give up easily. Any cultivator who could reach the point of ascension was not weak-willed, let alone someone who had practiced the Heartless Dao for nearly a hundred years. How could she just say she was stopping?
The refusal was on the tip of her tongue, but her peripheral vision caught a glimpse of Rong Shu.
Without the darkness covering her, she could see clearly now. Under the lights, the girl had a pale little face, expressionless, with empty eyes.
In Yu Qianyan’s eyes, this was a display of numbness and despair. She thought that perhaps the other party was also a victim.
The strict demands for chastity placed upon Omegas in this world flashed vaguely in her mind. Whether an Omega had been marked could naturally be checked, but if Yu Qianyan refused the engagement now, Rong Shu had been stripped and thrown into the room with her for so long that her fate would certainly not be good.
Her heart softened, and Yu Qianyan did not speak.
Yu Qishan took her silence as a concession. She snorted coldly and gestured for everyone to leave.
As the crowd dispersed, Yu Qianyan felt physically uncomfortable alone with her new “fiancée.” A strange, lingering heat remained in her heart.
She looked up and met Rong Shu’s gaze, which contained deep scrutiny. Yu Qianyan couldn’t sit still anymore. She stood up with a start. “Rest well, I’m leaving.”
She ran as soon as she finished speaking. It was the first time the righteous, Heartless Dao sword cultivator had experienced the feeling of fleeing in guilt.
Yu Qianyan left in such a hurry that she naturally didn’t notice the lingering gaze Rong Shu fixed on her back.
After this accident, Yu Qishan was in no mood to continue attending the banquet. She took Yu Qianyan and hurried back to the mansion.
The flight in the aircraft was silent the whole way. Neither mother nor daughter spoke.
Yu Qishan was worrying about her useless daughter and the future of the Yu family, while Yu Qianyan was seizing the time to organize the information that the Heaven of this realm, the world consciousness had stuffed into her head.
Upon learning that she had failed her ascension and that her soul had accidentally entered a book-world, replacing the original body that had died of choking while drunk, Yu Qianyan felt a moment of desolation. After recovering slightly, she immersed herself in the vast ocean of information about the interstellar era. Before she knew it, the aircraft had reached its destination.
She followed Yu Qishan off the plane and into the Duke’s mansion in a daze, and she still hadn’t come to her senses even when she stood in Yu Qishan’s private study.
Seeing this, Yu Qishan, feeling that iron could not be turned into steel, slammed her hand on the desk.
“Useless! Ridiculous! You good-for-nothing fool!”
Yu Qianyan hadn’t reacted to the fact that this was an insult directed at her. In her confusion, she thought her master was again so angry with a junior disciple that she wanted to kill someone. She instinctively straightened her back and knelt, kowtowing to Yu Qishan with a loud thud, and simultaneously appeased her skillfully and clearly: “Your Excellency, please calm your anger!”
Yu Qishan was stunned for a moment, momentarily fooled by this new tactic of her rebellious daughter’s flattery for two seconds, before slamming the desk even harder in anger. “You still dare to play tricks?! My decision will not change. Tomorrow, I will announce your engagement. You are going to marry that Omega!”
“I am not…”
“Shut up! From today on, you are not allowed to step one foot out of this house! Otherwise, I will peel your skin off! Just honestly wait to marry your wife.”
“Yes, I will definitely marry her well.”
“Get out!”
