- You Smell So Good! After Reuniting, My Ex-Boyfriend Forcefully Took Me Back
- Chapter 11 - Outburst at the Dinner Table
As one of the three most prestigious families in the Imperial Capital, the Liang family usually kept a low profile. Ever since the old patriarch stepped back from the front lines, he had moved his household into Repulse Bay, the most expensive villa district in the city.
Inside the quaint yet luxurious Chinese-style dining room, the large family sat gathered around a circular table for dinner. Although Liang Kechang was semi-retired, he remained the absolute authority of the entire clan. Sitting beside him was Liang Yanxiu, naturally positioned as the most favored successor. If one were to say which of the children or grandchildren most resembled the old man, it would undoubtedly be the eldest grandson, Liang Yanxiu.
“Yanxiu,” Xue Yufen spoke up, breaking the silence. “How come I haven’t seen Xiaoyu around lately? How are things going between you two? You’re both at that age now, so when do you plan to register your marriage?”
Liang Yanxiu didn’t pause his movements as he reached for a dish. “We’ll see.”
Chen Pingjun added, “Neither of you is getting any younger. You’re thirty-four this year, if I’m counting correctly. Sister-in-law, isn’t Xiaoyu already thirty?”
Xue Yufen nodded. “Yes.”
Driven by her professional instincts, Chen Pingjun began to urge them about starting a family. “An Omega’s prime childbearing years are limited. You can’t afford to delay.”
Xue Yufen followed up, “I’ve looked at a few dates, and the second half of the year looks promising. You two should hold the wedding soon.”
The others at the table pretended to be buried in their food, but their ears were pricked, listening intently to the exchange.
Liang Yanxiu finally set down his chopsticks and used a napkin to wipe his mouth. He looked up, his gaze meeting Xue Yufen’s. “Neither Xiaoyu nor I have any plans for that right now.”
The smile on Xue Yufen’s face froze. “Yanxiu, just a few days ago, your Auntie Liu’s grandson had his full-month celebration,”
Liang Yanxiu cut her off, seemingly having lost his patience. “Xiaoyu and I have discussed this. We have our own arrangements, Mom, so please stop worrying about it.”
With that, he turned to Liang Kechang. “Grandpa, there are several important projects at the company right now. I’m very busy, so I’ll be heading out first.”
Liang Yanxiu stood up. Without waiting for Liang Kechang’s approval, he simply nodded to the others at the table. “Enjoy your meal.”
He turned and walked away.
Liang Kechang’s expression darkened. He slammed his chopsticks onto the table but didn’t say a word. Seeing that he hadn’t spoken, Liang Yanxiu took it as a lack of objection and quickly drove away.
The rest of the family, however, sat in fear, feeling as though they were treading on thin ice. They barely dared to breathe, let alone continue eating.
After a long silence, Liang Kechang sighed. His heavy gaze swept across the room. “What are you all looking at me for? Eat.”
Only then did the others pick up their chopsticks and begin to eat quietly with their heads down. But after such an episode, everyone had lost their appetite.
Xue Yufen picked up a spoon and stirred the porridge in her bowl. She didn’t take a single sip for a long time before finally setting the spoon down. Without saying a word, she stood up on her own. “Dad, I’m full. I’m going upstairs.”
As she turned to leave, the crisp sound of her bowl and chopsticks clattering was unmistakable.
Liang Kechang didn’t even raise his eyelids. His voice was calm as he instructed his eldest son, “Go upstairs and see what’s wrong with Yufen.”
Liang Huaiqiu stood up. “Alright.”
When he pushed open the bedroom door, he saw Xue Yufen sitting on the edge of the bed with her back to the door, her shoulders trembling from crying. Liang Huaiqiu walked over and sat beside his wife, gently pulling her into his arms.
“Why are you crying?” He pulled out a tissue to wipe her tears.
Xue Yufen turned her head and pushed him away. “Don’t you know why I’m crying? Look at what’s become of Yanxiu!”
“The child I raised was originally cheerful and healthy, but your father has nearly driven him to the brink! It’s only been a few years, but look at him now. He’s like a block of ice. Ever since he came back, he hasn’t said a single word. He’s just like your father, treating his family exactly the same way he treats his subordinates. Is that still my son? Does he even see me as his mother anymore?”
The resentment in Xue Yufen’s heart flared, and she became increasingly agitated as she spoke.
“Does your father have to drive his own grandson into madness before he’s satisfied? Does he have to suffocate him until he can’t breathe? Does he have to drive him to death before he’s finally happy?”
Liang Huaiqiu held his wife. “Dad just has high expectations for Yanxiu. Yanxiu is a man, he has to take on responsibilities. Besides, he’s the future successor of the entire family conglomerate. He can’t be like the other juniors, laughing and playing all day long.”
Xue Yufen shoved him away forcefully. “You have the nerve to say that! How old are you? You’re fifty-eight! Think about it, in these fifty-eight years, has there been a single matter, big or small, that wasn’t under his control?”
