- Chapter 5 - Used So Much
Bai Youxi’s fingers were long, evenly thick, fair, and strong.
Now, because of the high fever, the whiteness was tinged with a distinct red, and her grip on Shen Jiangxu’s wrist was firm.
Shen Jiangxu tried to pull away but couldn’t, so she could only ask Aunt Tong to get the medicine first.
Aunt Tong understood the seriousness of the situation and had quickly sprayed the neutralizing agent throughout the room.
The sweet pheromone scent rapidly faded in the neutralizer, but Aunt Tong was hesitant to leave the room just yet.
The effect of the neutralizing agent could last for a while, but for the pheromones she couldn’t smell herself, Aunt Tong didn’t dare to be complacent.
Shen Jiangxu sprayed the neutralizer again, avoiding the exposed skin of Bai Youxi. “It’s alright, this concentration is fine.”
Aunt Tong still left, moving quickly.
Perhaps some cooling medicine still landed on Bai Youxi’s face, as she frowned and slowly opened her eyes.
Her whole body felt soft and weak, yet faintly cold. Bai Youxi understood what had happened almost instantly.
However, when she saw the slender fingers in front of her, her mind stalled on the spot.
“You like holding onto me that much?”
A clear, gentle voice came from above. Bai Youxi was momentarily confused, and she struggled to lift her eyes to look up.
The high fever made her eyeballs feel very swollen and painful, and turning them was as old machinery.
The beautiful face quickly fell into her view. Continuing to look up, she met that pair of cold, gray eyes.
The memory instantly became clear. Only then did Bai Youxi notice the strange feeling in her hand and quickly let go. “I’m sorry, I didn’t mean to.”
Even her voice was weak; she truly didn’t know where the strange strength to grab a person’s wrist had come from.
Shen Jiangxu retrieved her wrist. The lingering heat clearly announced its presence. She instinctively touched it with her other hand, seeing that a redness had already appeared on her wrist.
The spreading blush on the cold, white skin was particularly noticeable.
Shen Jiangxu lowered her hand. “I know.”
She then asked, “Are you uncomfortable?”
Bai Youxi was pulling her head out of the blanket. Her hair was slightly messy on her forehead. She pulled at the corner of her mouth, smiled, and gently shook her head.
Although the movement was slight, the rocking sensation was very obvious, and she dared not move again.
“I’m not uncomfortable. Don’t stay here, go back to sleep. I’ll just take an extra shot of the inhibitor.”
As she spoke, Aunt Tong returned to the room, carrying a small medicine box.
Shen Jiangxu neither agreed nor disagreed. She stepped back to the side, making room for Aunt Tong.
Bai Youxi didn’t have much strength to speak either. With Aunt Tong’s help, she managed to sit up slightly, took medicine, drank water, put on a fever patch, changed the isolation patch, injected the inhibitor, and then lay back down on the bed.
Her head was heavily drowsy; she wished she could close her eyes immediately, but she stared intently at Shen Jiangxu, who was still standing by the side.
Shen Jiangxu took her thermometer, looked at it, and then looked at Aunt Tong. “Come back to check in half an hour. If the temperature doesn’t drop, contact the hospital.”
Her gaze seemed to be burning too, staring intensely at Shen Jiangxu, as if trying to drill a hole in her.
Shen Jiangxu finally turned her head. “Bai Youxi, can I assume that by looking at me like this, you want me to stay with you?”
Bai Youxi’s brain was slow, but she quickly widened her eyes.
Shen Jiangxu timely continued, “Just kidding. Close your eyes and I’ll leave.”
Bai Youxi hadn’t expected Shen Jiangxu to joke with her. After thinking about it, she managed a slight smile.
She didn’t know if it was her illusion, but Shen Jiangxu’s brow seemed to furrow.
She quickly smoothed her lips and closed her eyes.
Two pairs of footsteps left the room, and the light was turned off before they left, leaving the room pitch black again.
Whenever Bai Youxi tried to think of something, her head hurt, so she thought of nothing. She wasn’t even sure when she fell asleep.
In a daze, Aunt Tong came in to take her temperature again, and a faint, clear voice whispered, “Did it drop?”
There was no sound, only a moment later, a hand tucked her blanket around her.
When she opened her eyes again, distant sounds drifted from the living room.
“…pay more attention, don’t let her go out…”
It was Shen Jiangxu’s voice.
Bai Youxi sat up. Her head still felt a dull ache, and her throat was very dry, but her body temperature had returned to normal. Even the surging pheromones from the night had stabilized and were perfectly sealed within the isolation patch with the help of the regulator ring.
Shen Jiangxu’s pajamas were a little small for her. After sleeping all night, they had almost completely come undone, and it took her some time to straighten them out again.
While fumbling for her slippers by the bed, the door to the room was quietly pushed open. She looked over and saw a small head peeking in through the crack, moving cautiously.
Bai Youxi was amused by Niannian. When Niannian met her gaze, she also put on a big, bright smile, pushed the door completely open, and walked in.
“Is the little cat better?”
Bai Youxi nodded. “You should call me Auntie.”
Niannian blinked her big eyes. “There are many aunties, but there’s only one little cat.”
Bai Youxi couldn’t help but smile again. “There is also only one Auntie Bai Youxi.”
Niannian lowered her head, seemingly thinking seriously, and quickly looked up at her again. “Grandma Tong has prepared breakfast.”
It was as if she gave up on the thought midway.
Bai Youxi was not in a hurry either, she acknowledged and got up to wash.
A small tail followed her from behind.
Even when sitting at the dinner table, Niannian insisted on pulling her chair very close to her, sticking to her side while eating.
Bai Youxi was a little teary-eyed. “How can Niannian eat so close?”
Niannian’s hand couldn’t reach her mouth, so she stretched her neck to reach the spoon in her hand. After swallowing, she turned to look at her, with a face full of pride. “Like this.”
“That takes too much effort.”
Niannian shook her head. “It’s not much effort. I promised Mommy I would keep a close eye on Little, um, Bai-cough.”
When she got to the end of her sentence, she seemed to struggle with what to call her, and after all the twists and turns, she was actually choked and turned into “Xiao Bai” [Little Bai].
She seemed a little annoyed too, secretly observing Bai Youxi’s reaction with a look of guilt, as if she would immediately change her name if Bai Youxi showed any displeasure.
Bai Youxi found it even funnier, but compared to “little cat,” “Xiao Bai” didn’t seem so bad.
But she also understood the origin of Niannian’s constant following, and she felt warm inside.
However, she tried hard to keep a straight face, pulled her chair to the side, and made room between them for normal movement.
“It’s okay. You can still watch me this way.”
Looking at the widening gap between them, Niannian suddenly panicked. “Is it because I called you ‘Xiao Bai’ that you are angry?”
Bai Youxi stroked her chin and deliberately said, “How should I put this…”
Niannian swallowed.
Bai Youxi instantly broke into a smile. “No, Niannian, you can call me that.”
Niannian was obviously happy, and then realized that although the distance had widened, it was still easy to reach Bai Youxi, so she ate obediently.
After the meal, Bai Youxi played with Niannian for a while, and then she started running a low fever again. The scent of her pheromones quickly escaped the isolation patch and floated in the air.
After telling Aunt Tong, Bai Youxi planned to go back to her room to lie down. Niannian moved a small stool and wanted to sit by her bed and watch her.
Bai Youxi refused Niannian’s actions. After all, she was still young and should not stay close to a sick person for a long time, especially at such a close distance.
From last night until now, she didn’t show any signs of being in the buffer period. Her body was completely in a state of pheromone loss of control.
The fever caused by this state should not be contagious, but it was not normal.
Moreover, she didn’t know when this fever would turn into an estrus period, and the disorder and confusion of her perception were also dangerous.
Niannian was not the kind of child who couldn’t be reasoned with. Niannian agreed after Bai Youxi suggested that she could come in with Aunt Tong every once in a while to spray the neutralizer and check on her.
After Niannian was taken away by Aunt Tong, Bai Youxi remembered that she had injected an inhibitor before going to bed last night, but she still lost control in the middle of the night.
She was already losing control, and one dose might not be enough.
Thinking about it, Bai Youxi gave herself another injection.
Throughout the morning, Bai Youxi was in and out of sleep. Her body, with too much pheromone leakage, felt like she had a bad cold. Her body was heavy, and her mind was unclear. She dreamed of everything, but it was so chaotic that she couldn’t remember anything.
At noon, she was woken up by Aunt Tong to eat something. Bai Youxi continued to lie on the bed and then realized that another box of inhibitors was empty.
Perhaps it was because her body had not yet adapted to the new regulator ring, and without the help of the inhibitor, the regulator ring had difficulty functioning.
So her fever came in waves, but her temperature kept rising.
She was truly uncomfortable. At first, she could still hear Niannian opening the door, walking over to touch her forehead, and Aunt Tong following her to take her temperature and spray a circle of neutralizer.
Later, she couldn’t hear anything until a hand grabbed her collar and tried to shake her awake. The voice sounded like it was separated by a thick membrane, cold and stern.
“Are you trying to kill yourself? How dare you use so much!”
She opened her eyes hazily. Very close to her, there was a face so beautiful it was unreal.
Pine smoke gray eyes, a high and delicate nose, and tempting scarlet lips every feature was so beautiful it made people angry.
Perhaps it was truly unreal she couldn’t see anything clearly right now.
However, she still couldn’t help but curve her lips and praise that beautiful face, “You are so beautiful…”
