- Chapter 2 - We Were Together All Night...
Due to her promise with Niannian, Bai Youxi tried her best to return to the park around the time Niannian was dismissed from school these past two days.
Today was Friday, the fourth day of them becoming good friends. By the time she arrived, the little sprout was already sitting on the long bench, her little feet swinging, looking eagerly in the direction Bai Youxi was coming from.
Aunt Tong still stood far away. It seemed they wouldn’t get a chance to talk today either.
Bai Youxi thought this was good. She quickened her steps, running toward Niannian who, upon seeing her, immediately ran over. Bai Youxi reached out to pick the little one up.
Niannian didn’t let her, instead grabbing her pant leg and walking toward one side. “Kitty, walk faster, I saw the little cats over there.”
So, she wasn’t happy to see her, after all.
Bai Youxi touched her nose, feeling awkward walking like this. She switched her hand from her pant leg to Niannian’s hand and followed the direction the child was leading.
“Niannian, you should call me Jiejie (older sister).”
Niannian ignored her. “Kitty, don’t talk. They’re very quick and will run away.”
Bai Youxi was a little helpless, but still lightened her steps.
She knew Niannian often came to the park to feed the cats. However, the familiar faces were successfully adopted one after another, and for the past few days, the new kittens hadn’t been seen at all. Today, they finally found some. If they ran away because of her, her sin would be great.
But she genuinely didn’t know why Niannian kept calling her “Kitty,” and it had started since the day they parted after meeting.
She considered herself nothing like a cat. She was an 1.84 meter tall Alpha. While her appearance couldn’t be described as aggressive, it was certainly not one that anyone would mistake her gender. Why “Kitty”?
Could it be that since Niannian hadn’t seen the little cats for a few days, she was being treated as a substitute?
Still, being called “Kitty” all the time wasn’t good. She had been trying to correct her, but as the result showed it was completely ineffective.
In the bushes not far away, a few small shadows flashed by.
Niannian stopped, her voice low and a little disappointed. “Ah, they ran away again.”
Niannian’s small hand was already on her satchel, but she hadn’t had time to take out the canned food. Seeing the cats disappear instantly, she wasn’t sure whether to take it out now.
Bai Youxi had been watching the direction the shadows fled. Once they were out of sight, she squatted down to face Niannian. “Niannian, let’s open the can and go look over there. Maybe they won’t be scared when they smell it.”
Niannian nodded, took the can out of her bag and handed it to her, and then took out another small bag of cat food and poured a little onto the steps where the cats had just been.
Bai Youxi opened the can and handed it back to Niannian. She led Niannian in the direction they had seen the cats, calling out “Meow-meow” as they walked.
Niannian followed her lead. When they reached the other side, they indeed saw three kittens playing in the setting sun about a month old, two ginger cats and one white cat. She wasn’t sure if they were the same litter as before.
Niannian turned to look at her, her eyes sparkling.
Bai Youxi nodded. The adult and the child simultaneously crouched low and slowly shuffled toward the kittens.
Perhaps it was the lure of the canned food, but the kittens only watched them approach and didn’t run away.
When they were a short distance away, the two squatted down, placed the can on the ground, and pushed it forward a little.
Niannian said, “We’re not bad people, do you want to come and eat some canned food? It’s very delicious.”
The kittens didn’t move. Niannian then carefully pointed at Bai Youxi. “She’s a little cat, too. She’s your kind.”
Bai Youxi hesitated for a moment, then deliberately squeezed her voice and let out a soft “Meow~”
Niannian turned back to look at her, covering her mouth with her small hand and laughing.
Bai Youxi felt inexplicably embarrassed. Just as she was about to look away, a soft friction brushed against her side. A large ginger cat emerged from behind and rubbed against her leg.
The ginger cat was quite big, with long, golden, soft fur. It closed its eyes and rubbed against her, purring as loud as a tractor.
Bai Youxi didn’t dare to move. The ginger cat rubbed with abandon, then turned around to continue rubbing. Its high, erect tail almost brushed against her chin.
Niannian exclaimed in surprise, “Wow, a big cat.”
Just as she finished speaking, the ginger cat circled behind Niannian, rubbed against her, and then walked toward the can they had pushed forward. It took one bite and then sat there, not eating anymore.
The three kittens then came over to eat.
The two just squatted there and watched. When the kittens finished eating, they didn’t leave but rubbed against them and played.
Suddenly, Niannian said, “You only have one mom, too.”
Bai Youxi’s hand, which was stroking a kitten, paused.
Niannian was a child from a single-parent family, with only an Omega mother who seemed to teach at a school and finished class quite late.
Niannian had mentioned this when they were chatting. The little one’s tone was completely normal, and she even proudly said her mom was the most beautiful person in the world and the best mom.
Even now, hearing words that Bai Youxi found a little unsettling, there was no sadness in Niannian’s voice, only sincere happiness, as if she had simply found a common point between herself and the kittens.
So, Bai Youxi said, “They have a good mom.”
Niannian nodded rapidly.
When other people passed by in twos and threes, the ginger cat and the kittens left.
After watching the kittens leave, Niannian was fully content and pulled Bai Youxi to wander around the park.
It was only then that Bai Youxi remembered she had brought something back with her.
She took a lollipop out of her jacket pocket and deliberately circled it in front of Niannian. “Guess what this is?”
Niannian recognized her favorite flavor immediately. “Wow, does Kitty like this too?”
Seeing Niannian seem unmoved, Bai Youxi shook the lollipop she was holding. “No, no, no, this is for Niannian.”
Niannian stopped and looked up at her. “Really?”
Bai Youxi nodded, seizing the opportunity to say, “But there’s a condition. Niannian has to call me Jiejie and can never call me ‘Kitty’ again.”
Niannian wrinkled her face.
Bai Youxi: “If you can do it, the candy is yours.”
Niannian looked even more conflicted.
Mom didn’t allow her to eat too much candy. Since she gave her last candy to Bai Youxi, she hadn’t had any, and this was her favorite kind.
Bai Youxi walked and tried to tempt Niannian. “This one is really sweet and delicious. If you tear off the wrapper and put it in your mouth, the sweet taste will instantly…”
“Jiejie!”
Niannian interrupted her, ran a few steps to her side, opened her small hands toward her, looking defiant.
Bai Youxi was pleased, placing the lollipop in Niannian’s hand. “Aww, Niannian is good.”
However, Niannian, upon getting the candy, turned and ran, laughing loudly.
“A kitty is a kitty!”
Bai Youxi hadn’t expected to be tricked by a three-year-old. She immediately chased after her, pretending to be menacing and fierce with an exaggerated, threatening gesture. “Lying children will be eaten by Jiejie!”
Niannian laughed even harder.
Afraid that Niannian might fall if she chased too fast, Bai Youxi deliberately controlled her speed. Still, she soon caught her.
She held both of Niannian’s small hands, huffing a little as she spoke to the child who was now looking up at her, pretending to be wronged. “Why are you so naughty?”
They had just rounded a corner and had been running for a bit, so Niannian was panting. Both of them were walking very slowly, neither paying attention to the path.
But just then, a bag suddenly hit Bai Youxi’s face. Stung by the pain, Bai Youxi subconsciously let go of Niannian’s hands.
The next moment, she felt a gust of wind rush past. Her center of gravity was broken, the scene before her quickly spun upward, and in an instant, she fell heavily onto the ground.
Pain immediately spread from all directions, only to be tightly suppressed by bewilderment.
Bai Youxi’s vision was blurred, and only then did she realize that someone seemed to be pressing down on her.
It was this person who had suddenly rushed over and pinned her to the ground.
A bony knee pressed heavily on her abdomen, making it hard for her to breathe.
Beside them, Niannian, upon clearly seeing the person, wasn’t scared at all and rushed over excitedly. “Mommy!”
Bai Youxi’s ears were ringing, and she couldn’t hear very clearly. Her vision finally cleared a little, and she saw a woman.
The woman had a slender figure, and her profile, facing away from her, was stunningly beautiful, somehow resembling Niannian. She was an Omega.
She pushed away Niannian, who was coming to hug her, pointed at the bag that had fallen to the side, and quickly said, “Niannian, go help Mommy get her phone. We’re calling the police.”
Niannian was a little annoyed at being pushed away by her mom, and now a little confused. “Calling the police?”
The Omega twisted her wrist. Bai Youxi’s arm, which had been caught at some point, instantly flared with pain. The Omega’s clear voice became even colder and sharper. “Mommy is going to send this human trafficker to jail!”
Niannian blinked, looked at Bai Youxi pinned beneath her mother, and then looked at her mother. “But she’s not a human trafficker, she’s a kitty.”
Shen Jiangxu’s furrowed brow deepened. “What?”
She then turned to look at Bai Youxi beneath her. Over her fine lashes, the golden sunset reflected in her Smokey-gray eyes was ice cold. “You are a kitty?”
In the brief moment the Omega’s cold and magnificent face became clear, the memories Bai Youxi had tried to conceal surged like a tide, crashing in all at once.
In an instant, an indescribable excitement overwhelmed her mind. Bai Youxi completely forgot Shen Jiangxu’s question, only staring at the face she had been intimate with one night, struggling to lift her head.
“What a coincidence!”
The vigilance in Shen Jiangxu’s eyes deepened again.
Bai Youxi was completely unaware. “Why did you suddenly leave back then? You didn’t even leave me contact information. I didn’t even know your name, and I had nowhere to look for you…”
Shen Jiangxu interrupted her. “What are you talking about?”
That look was as cold as frost and full of caution.
Bai Youxi calmed down a bit. Looking at that face again, she still felt she hadn’t mistaken her, and besides, there wouldn’t be a second pair of such exquisitely beautiful eyes in the world.
The eye shape was long and slightly upturned, the slender lashes like butterfly wings, blocking half the sunlight. The pupils hidden within were a deep, cold gray. On the other half, the sunset fell into that unique Smokey-gray, diffusing a pale gold.
She couldn’t detect any anomaly in those eyes.
“You… don’t remember me?”
The answer was still those unfamiliar eyes looking at her.
“Do I know you?”
Bai Youxi panicked. The joy of the reunion was suddenly ripped open by a crack, and various emotions surged wildly through the fissure.
She stuttered, trying to explain. “O-of course, four years ago, in South City, at TH Bar. We were together all night and…”
“I apologize, my daughter is here. Please do not say unsubstantiated things in front of the child. Besides, you said yourself that you don’t even know the person’s name, so how can you definitively say it’s me?”
Shen Jiangxu interrupted her again, but her reasoning was sound, leaving Bai Youxi unable to refute.
Perhaps the person truly had forgotten.
She lowered her eyes, trying to regulate her emotions, feeling that she indeed shouldn’t be saying such things in front of Niannian.
Moreover, the Omega already had a child. She shouldn’t force a mother with these past events.
Soon, she looked back at Shen Jiangxu, much calmer, and said seriously, “I’m sorry, I was presumptuous. Please don’t take it to heart.”
Niannian also tugged on Shen Jiangxu’s sleeve, whispering, “Mommy, Kitty is not a bad person.”
While they were talking, Aunt Tong, who had been following far behind, had long since walked closer and was very surprised by the scene.
Shen Jiangxu looked up at her. Aunt Tong understood that she was asking about the truth of Niannian’s words, so she nodded quickly. “Yes, they were playing.”
Niannian didn’t like the atmosphere; she felt uncomfortable. Hearing Aunt Tong’s words, she quickly recounted to her mother the entire sequence of their playing.
Listening to Niannian narrate the argument about “Jiejie” and “Kitty,” Bai Youxi felt increasingly childish and embarrassed. After Niannian finished, she quickly added, “Uh, I really shouldn’t be called Jiejie. Call me Yiyi (auntie).”
Shen Jiangxu glanced at her, then finally got off Bai Youxi. “I apologize, I misunderstood.”
Even so, she made no move to help her up, and even held Niannian back when the child tried to move toward her, pulling her behind her.
“It’s okay, it’s my fault.”
Bai Youxi finally relaxed completely. The pain came flooding in from all directions. She endured it and struggled to sit up from the ground, feeling that something was very wrong.
“Mommy, Kitty is bleeding.”
Niannian was saying that over there. Over here, Bai Youxi had already wiped her hand on her clothes and reached for the back of her neck.
Beneath the clear scrape, the sensation of what was there was completely wrong.
Bai Youxi’s heart sank. She didn’t worry about anything else and looked back at Shen Jiangxu.
“Um, could you lend me some money? I need to go to the hospital.”
