- Chapter 13 - Do You Want to Marry Me?
Before leaving the house, Shen Jiangxu put on a light layer of makeup as usual.
That cold and beautiful face was already unrealistically good-looking, and a little powder made barely any difference, only making her lips look redder and teeth whiter, like an immortal.
In Bai Youxi’s eyes, “putting on makeup” actually meant covering the dark circles under her eyes that hadn’t completely disappeared even after a good night’s sleep.
Bai Youxi nervously glanced over and found that not only were the dark circles covered, but the marks on her neck were also meticulously concealed. Her long hair fell over her neck, making them almost invisible.
Perhaps she didn’t want the doctors and passersby at the hospital to see them, and since it was hotter during the day, a high-collared shirt was unsuitable.
She sized up Shen Jiangxu, and Shen Jiangxu was also sizing her up, though she quickly averted her gaze and handed her an inhibitor.
Although a morning had passed, Bai Youxi’s current condition was still relatively good, and a new patch could last about two hours.
However, Bai Youxi also knew that no one could tell what might happen on the way or what other issues might arise at the hospital. Relying solely on one patch was definitely very unrealistic.
In the underground garage, Bai Youxi followed behind Shen Jiangxu. A quick glance in the corner of her eye suddenly spotted the car that had picked her up and dropped her off twice at the hospital.
She remembered the license plate number very clearly.
But Shen Jiangxu continued to walk forward.
Bai Youxi thought Shen Jiangxu had forgotten where the car was parked and quickly reminded her, “Shen Jiangxu, I see it. The car is over there.”
Shen Jiangxu paused, looked in the direction she pointed, and turned back to glance at her with a calm voice, “Not taking that one today.”
She then continued walking forward.
Bai Youxi was a little stunned, realizing that Shen Jiangxu might have more than one car, and quickly caught up.
It wasn’t until she stood in front of a limited edition luxury supercar that Bai Youxi felt something was wrong.
The dazzling headlights flashed, making the beautiful car body even clearer, and a high-profile sense of luxury rushed at her.
Bai Youxi vaguely remembered a friend mentioning this car. She couldn’t recall all the “top-tier” descriptions, but its limited global quantity of 500 meant it only fell into the hands of the wealthiest individuals, let alone the number in China.
And now, she was seeing it in Shen Jiangxu’s possession?
Bai Youxi stared at it in a daze, not even noticing Shen Jiangxu opening the car door.
Shen Jiangxu was halfway in before she saw Bai Youxi still spaced out and couldn’t help but ask, “What’s wrong?”
Bai Youxi snapped back to reality and quickly shook her head.
After getting in and fastening her seatbelt, she couldn’t help but exclaim, “This is my first time riding in such an expensive car. It’s really nice.”
Shen Jiangxu drove the car out of the parking space. “I’ll let you drive it next time.”
Bai Youxi smiled happily, “I won’t decline.”
Shen Jiangxu nodded.
Despite saying that, Bai Youxi didn’t think there would be a “next time.”
After entering the hospital, she probably wouldn’t return to Shen Jiangxu’s home, and perhaps even the opportunities to meet would become very rare.
She had intended to pack her luggage, but she genuinely didn’t have much. Even the clothes she had worn for the past few days were bought by Aunt Tong at Shen Jiangxu’s request.
Even so, she had packed those clothes into a large plastic bag, ready to take them to the hospital for changing.
However, Shen Jiangxu discovered it before they left and simply told her, “You don’t need to take them.”
Bai Youxi hesitated for a long time but kept them in her hand. They were thrown into the back seat by Shen Jiangxu after she got into the car.
She thought their journey would be straight to the hospital, but she didn’t expect Shen Jiangxu to take her to a high-end looking shopping mall.
Bai Youxi opened her mouth to ask, but Shen Jiangxu didn’t seem interested in explaining, speaking first before she could.
“Come with me first. It won’t take long.”
Bai Youxi could only nod and follow behind Shen Jiangxu.
Shen Jiangxu led her to a high-end luxury counter. The sales associate clearly recognized Shen Jiangxu and greeted her with a bright smile.
Shen Jiangxu didn’t exchange pleasantries with the associate, simply pointing at Bai Youxi and saying, “Get her a new outfit.”
Before Bai Youxi could react, she was ushered away by the associate. She looked back in confusion to find Shen Jiangxu, only seeing a cold side profile as she spoke with a manager-like associate.
Dazed, with different clothes being held up to her by the associates, Bai Youxi still tried to look back at Shen Jiangxu.
Why on earth would she need a new outfit? Was it to celebrate her hospital admission?
That shouldn’t require a special trip for a change of clothes, especially from such an expensive brand.
Even as a university professor and a major copyright holder for choreography, the money earned shouldn’t be nearly enough to fill the gap left by the house and car. How could she still bring her here to splurge?
Bai Youxi grumbled to herself, and in the blink of an eye, she was shoved into the fitting room.
Finally, she changed and walked somewhat nervously in front of Shen Jiangxu. Shen Jiangxu said nothing, merely nodded, swiped her card, and left with her.
It wasn’t until they reached the car that Shen Jiangxu suddenly turned to her and said, “It suits you very well.”
Bai Youxi was a little confused and looked down at herself.
She was wearing a beautiful champagne gold shirt with matching delicate embroidery, paired with uniquely colored jeans and white sneakers.
The overall look was elegant and sophisticated, yet it had a different kind of vibrancy on her.
It wasn’t her usual choice of outfit.
But Bai Youxi was still very happy with Shen Jiangxu’s compliment.
Especially since Shen Jiangxu was wearing a cream colored long dress today, the lace pattern on the collar outlining a beautiful swan-like neck, which inexplicably matched her own outfit.
It seemed that going to the hospital dressed nicely wasn’t so bad after all.
She tallied today’s expenses into the mental bill, determined to repay Shen Jiangxu immediately afterward.
However, Bai Youxi’s happiness didn’t last long, quickly replaced by confusion.
When Shen Jiangxu parked the car, Bai Youxi still hadn’t processed the three words “Civil Affairs Bureau” in her line of sight.
Seeing Shen Jiangxu unbuckle her seatbelt, Bai Youxi blinked blankly. “Are we buying something nearby?”
Shen Jiangxu’s clear voice, still carrying a slight huskiness, denied it. “Not buying anything.”
Next, Shen Jiangxu took a few folded A4 sheets from a bag beside her and handed them to Bai Youxi. “You read this first.”
A signing pen was clipped to the papers. Bai Youxi took it off, opened the papers with wide-eyed confusion, and then quickly folded them back up after seeing the enlarged title, looking at Shen Jiangxu with a startled expression.
“You, you, this…”
“I’m serious.”
Her pine-smoke gray eyes were still cold, but the gaze fixed on her was clearer than before, looking directly into her eyes.
The words stuck in Bai Youxi’s throat were eventually self-digested. She took a deep breath and looked back at the A4 paper in her hand.
It was a contract.
Shen Jiangxu had titled it “Marriage Agreement Contract.”
Simple and straightforward.
Bai Youxi held her breath and carefully read the contents of the thin one-page agreement, still doubting her eyes and ears.
The content was roughly that Shen Jiangxu hoped to establish a de facto marriage with her for two years. All expenses incurred during the marriage, including her food, clothing, accommodation, and medical treatment, would be covered by Shen Jiangxu.
During the marriage, she only needed to treat Shen Mingnian as her own and conscientiously play the role of a wife.
It was also supplemented that if Bai Youxi’s condition still hadn’t passed the observation period when the agreement expired, the agreement would be extended on an annual basis.
The agreement was in duplicate. Shen Jiangxu had already signed her name in various places on the agreement. The elegant handwriting was clear and beautiful, making Bai Youxi feel unreal.
She slowly blinked, then raised her gaze to the title again, re-reading the agreement carefully.
After a while, she pointed to the only name in the agreement that didn’t belong to the two of them and looked at Shen Jiangxu. “Does Niannian know?”
Shen Jiangxu’s long eyelashes drooped slightly and she stated directly, “She doesn’t need to know.”
Bai Youxi was confused. “Why so sudden? Weren’t you taking me to the hospital?”
Shen Jiangxu took the signing pen from her hand, uncapped it, and handed it back to her. “We’re not going to the hospital.”
“And it’s not sudden,” those gray eyes moved closer to her. “I’m very satisfied with you.”
Bai Youxi felt that Shen Jiangxu was lying. Those eyes were cold, without a hint of the affection one should have when entering into a marriage, even a contractual one.
But before she could show her suspicion, Shen Jiangxu glanced at her fingers.
Bai Youxi suddenly understood.
Being satisfied in that aspect was also a form of satisfaction, wasn’t it?
But no matter what, the act of dragging her in front of the Civil Affairs Bureau and handing her a marriage agreement was still sudden.
She hadn’t had any psychological preparation at all.
Shen Jiangxu’s gaze moved from her fingers back to her eyes, and her light voice sounded exceptionally serious.
“Bai Youxi, do you want to marry me?”
