- Chapter 1 - I Like Kittens
“Subtracting your lunch money of 15 kuai, this is your pay for today. If you want to work tomorrow, just look for me here.”
“Okay, thank you.”
Taking the thin stack of banknotes from Beta’s hand, Bai Youxi didn’t linger and turned to walk out.
It was already half past four in the afternoon. The convention center had been cleared out an hour ago, and the work for pamphlet distributors like them was only considered finished when there were no longer many people outside.
Bai Youxi walked along the road, kicking her feet playfully, a bit conflicted about how to spend these hundred or so kuai.
It was already April, and the sun in Nancheng was beginning to show its power, but it reverted to its original form at night. The thin jacket she was wearing wouldn’t be able to ward off the chill.
Just yesterday, she had considered this a relaxed and pleasant vacation, never imagining that shortly after getting off the plane, she would somehow become penniless.
First, her suitcase mysteriously disappeared at the airport. Then, after wandering around the city center and getting ready to book a room, she found the bottom of her small shoulder bag had been slashed, and her phone, bank cards, and everything else were gone.
Only her ID card, which she had casually put in her pants pocket when she got off the plane, had survived.
It wasn’t that Nancheng’s public safety was untrustworthy even the police officer who received her report expressed disbelief and insisted that Nancheng hadn’t had a theft case in many years.
Bai Youxi was simply unlucky.
Logically, with her ID card, getting a replacement bank card shouldn’t have been difficult, but none of those bank cards were in her name.
Call home?
She absolutely refused.
She had run away from home on her own. How could she give in less than twenty-four hours after leaving?
There was indeed something wrong with her physical condition, but after all, it was an engagement that had been suddenly unearthed from the generation before last. Even without mutual love, she and her fiancee no, ex-fiancee had known each other and been together for three years.
The stakes had been clearly explained repeatedly. If the other person felt it wasn’t suitable, they shouldn’t have agreed to the engagement.
She never expected that with only three months left until the wedding, the other person would suddenly show up unannounced to break the engagement, causing such a messy scene.
She didn’t try to salvage the relationship and immediately agreed to the annulment, which led to another argument with her family.
In short, the final result was that Bai Youxi, the one dubbed the source of all trouble, ran away from home.
If she had known this would happen, Bai Youxi would have absolutely gotten a card in her own name and deposited some money, rather than ending up completely broke like this.
After thinking it over, Bai Youxi decided not to touch this small amount of money for now.
The convention center event was scheduled to last for another four or five days. If she went there every day to distribute leaflets until the event ended, she should be able to save up enough for a second hand phone. Once she got a replacement SIM card, she could use her WeChat account.
At that point, whether she used the money in her WeChat wallet or confessed to a friend and borrowed some, the money issue should be resolved.
After walking for about half an hour, Bai Youxi arrived at a park.
She stood at the entrance, kicking the ground, and finally sighed and walked in.
She had slept there last night.
With no acquaintances and no money, she couldn’t just randomly grab someone and ask if she could stay at their house. She had browsed the tourist map she got from the police station and finally chose this place.
It was a fully open park with restrooms and water access, which was pretty good in some respects.
In fact, Bai Youxi had even found an old, broken sleeping bag in the bushes yesterday. It looked like it had just been washed it was clean and didn’t smell, though it was stained with dirt and had a long tear along a seam, exposing the white cotton inside.
Perhaps that was why it had been thrown away by someone camping there.
Bai Youxi didn’t mind it at all. She tucked the exposed cotton back inside and crawled in, spending the night curled up on a bench. When she left today, she still wrapped it up and hid it back in the bushes, just in case.
And indeed, even though she had a little money in her pocket, she was back here.
No matter how cheap a youth hostel or internet cafe was, it wouldn’t be cheaper than a free park.
It was about five o’clock, and although it was Tuesday, the park was quite busy while the sun was still out.
Bai Youxi wasn’t planning on immediately digging out the sleeping bag to sleep. Yesterday, she hadn’t encountered many people because it was late when she arrived, so she didn’t know what the situation was like here.
She wanted to take a walk first. Since it was one of the larger parks nearby, the night traffic should be substantial.
As she walked toward the bench where she had slept last night, her mind was still planning what she should do, but her eyes subconsciously searched for the bushes where she had hidden the sleeping bag.
A quick glance showed nothing. Bai Youxi paused, then realized something in her peripheral vision was wrong.
The sleeping bag, which she had rolled up into a small bundle and hidden deep inside the bushes that morning, was now openly spread out on the nearby bench.
The same bench where she had slept last night.
Bai Youxi’s heart sank. Seeing no one nearby, she quickly walked over to check the situation.
It was only when she reached the bench that she realized the sleeping bag wasn’t empty. Lying inside was a person, or rather, a small child.
A girl, about three years old, fair-skinned and exquisitely beautiful, like a porcelain doll.
Even with her eyes tightly closed, her features showed she was a very pretty little child.
Bai Youxi was startled, and all sorts of bizarre murder cases flashed through her mind, making her back chill.
She tremblingly reached out to check the child’s breathing, her heart heavy and complex.
However, before she could get close enough, the child’s pink, moist lips suddenly mumbled something, as if she were dreaming.
Bai Youxi’s anxiety instantly dissipated, but upon reflection, something was still wrong.
She didn’t see an adult!
Her hand, which had been trying to check the child’s breath, changed direction. Bai Youxi nervously shook the sleeping bag, “Little one, wake up, where is your mom? Why are you here alone?”
A string of questions were thrown out, and the little child slowly woke up and, amid Bai Youxi’s urgency, slowly sat up.
The little child had very large eyes, like black grapes. She stared at Bai Youxi sleepily, clearly not fully awake, and mumbled incoherently, “Nee shung shang she shang duh, hwa jhur guy yee yang.”
She didn’t speak clearly, and her voice was soft and hazy. Bai Youxi couldn’t make out anything, assuming she had scared the child. She quickly squatted down to be at eye level with the child, softening her voice and saying, “Don’t be afraid. I want to ask you a few questions. Can you tell me if you know the answers?”
The little child slowly blinked and nodded.
Bai Youxi repeated her question, and the little child finally seemed more awake. Without thinking much, she answered, one word at a time, “I’m not a little one. You can call me Niannian. My mom hasn’t finished class yet…”
As she spoke, she yawned again.
Her voice sounded childish but her articulation was very clear.
Seeing that the little child wanted to shrink back into the sleeping bag, Bai Youxi quickly interrupted, “Okay, Niannian. Is your mom still busy right now? Where are the adults you came with? Who did you come with?
Niannian paused, but still tried to sit up straight, extending her small hand to point forward. “Grandma Tong is over there.”
Bai Youxi followed the direction of her finger and, a short distance away, indeed saw an auntie in her fifties. She was facing them, her gaze vaguely resting on their side, as if she were in a daze.
Bai Youxi’s brows furrowed instantly. She was about to stand up. “Let’s go find her…”
But she felt a slight tug on her sleeve. She looked down and saw Niannian shaking her head. “Don’t look for her. Let’s play.”
Bai Youxi looked at “Grandma Tong” again, just in time to see the auntie come back to her senses and look over. Their eyes met, and the auntie gave a slight nod. She appeared amiable the whole time.
Bai Youxi was a bit confused, but since the adult had nodded, she must be keeping an eye on them. Suddenly, a small hand reached out in front of her. Bai Youxi turned back to see Niannian holding a hair clip.
“First, help me tie my hair, okay?”
Niannian, meanwhile, was rubbing her sleepy eyes with a tiny fist. Her hair was a mess from sleeping, and the hair clip on the other side of her head bobbed with her movement, about to fall off. Niannian wasn’t shy at all. Before Bai Youxi could even agree, she pulled Bai Youxi to sit on the bench, climbed out of the sleeping bag, and snuggled into her arms.
Bai Youxi couldn’t refuse after all. She took the small comb Niannian pulled from her satchel and carefully smoothed the frizzled hair on the little head in front of her. Niannian had thick, soft hair that barely reached her shoulders. The ends were naturally curly, clumped together, making it a bit difficult to manage. However, for a long time in her childhood, Bai Youxi’s own hair had been very unruly and frizzy, much worse than Niannian’s current state, and was a pain to manage, so she was quite experienced. While she combed, she could chat with Niannian.
“Niannian, aren’t you afraid I’m a bad person?”
“Then you wouldn’t have woken me up. I was sleeping soundly. I probably wouldn’t have known if I was carried away, but I hadn’t had enough sleep yet.”
“How did you end up sleeping here, Niannian?”
“It was a bit boring today. I couldn’t find the kitten, so the prepared canned food couldn’t be given to the kitten.”
“Does Grandma Tong always stay that far away from you?”
“Yes, I don’t let her come closer. The kitten doesn’t like Grandma Tong; it runs away whenever Grandma Tong gets close.”
“All done, Niannian. Take a look.”
Niannian picked up the small mirror in her hand and twisted her head to see. Bai Youxi had divided her hair into two sections and tied two small spheres below the back of her head. Since Niannian’s hair ends were curly, the buns looked round and plump, like little lanterns hanging by her ears very cute. With her previously messy hair now neat and pretty, Niannian looked left and right, extremely pleased. A smile instantly broke out on her adorable, baby fat cheeked face, and all her remaining sleepiness vanished.
She looked up at Bai Youxi, her large, purple grape eyes shining. “It’s so pretty! Thank you, I love it.”
Bai Youxi was already quite satisfied with the result, and now seeing the little child thank her like this made her feel even better. But Niannian refused to get out of her arms or go play on the ground, instead taking out a loop of string to play Cat’s Cradle with her.
The days in April were getting longer, but the sun’s westward tilt was still noticeable.
This time, when it was Niannian’s turn to make a figure with the string, Niannian suddenly stopped moving. Bai Youxi waited a moment and, seeing that Niannian still hadn’t moved, lowered her head slightly to ask, “What’s wrong? Do you want me to teach you this one?”
The string figures she made included many new patterns Niannian hadn’t seen. Niannian often got stuck after one or two steps and needed Bai Youxi to loop the string onto her hands to teach her. But clearly, Niannian’s pause this time wasn’t due to confusion. She suddenly looked up, “Can I come find you to play again tomorrow?”
Bai Youxi hesitated, wondering if she would still be here tomorrow. Niannian knew that adults always had various things going on, and she nervously asked, “First, can you give me a number, please?”
Bai Youxi withdrew her gaze, revealing a troubled expression. After all, she didn’t know when her number would work again. “It won’t go through, you know.”
“Then, where do you live? I’ll ask Grandma Tong to take me after school.”
“I… don’t have a place to stay yet.”
Saying this in front of a three-year-old made the twenty-three-year-old Bai Youxi a bit embarrassed, but perhaps because Niannian was just a child, she told the truth.
Just then, Bai Youxi’s stomach rumbled. A clear, loud sound.
“Goo”
Niannian followed the sound and looked at her belly. “Are you hungry? Do you want to go eat…” Bai Youxi’s embarrassment grew exponentially. Her ears were red, and she flatly denied it, “I’m not hungry. Niannian heard wrong.”
After a moment of silence, Niannian spoke again, “You…” The word was cut short, and Niannian changed her mind, saying, “But I’m hungry. I have to go now.”
Niannian jumped off the bench, pulled a candy from her pocket and placed it in Bai Youxi’s hand, then held out her pinky finger to hook Bai Youxi’s.
“This is my favorite candy. It’s very sweet. I hate to eat it, but I’m giving it to you, so we’re good friends now. I’ll come here to find you to play after school starting tomorrow. It’s a promise~” Her small hand tried hard to press her thumb against Bai Youxi’s. Bai Youxi didn’t refuse, moving her finger to complete the pinky promise.
Niannian was very happy. “I’ll come again tomorrow!” She turned and ran towards the auntie without waiting for Bai Youxi’s reaction. She stopped halfway, turned back, and waved at her. Her small hand was held high, her arm swung quickly, and she was panting.
“Goodbye, little kitten~”
Can’t be contacted, no place to stay, can’t find food. She was indeed a kitten.
Just past ten o’clock, Shen Jiangxu entered the apartment as quietly as possible. As soon as she put her things down, the door to the small bedroom opened a crack.
Niannian walked out from the doorway, her eyes still closed, and mumbled groggily, “Mommy~”
Shen Jiangxu turned around and saw Niannian, wearing her pajamas, with the two small buns on the back of her head stubbornly still intact.
She walked over and picked Niannian up, her voice clear and gentle as she spoke softly, “Did Mommy wake Niannian up?”
Niannian shook her head quickly, burying her head in Shen Jiangxu’s neck. “Mommy smells good.”
Shen Jiangxu gently patted Niannian’s back. “Shall Mommy lull Niannian to sleep?”
Niannian rubbed her head against her, signaling agreement.
Putting Niannian back into the small bed and covering her with the blanket, Shen Jiangxu patted her gently and asked in a low voice, “What did Niannian do today?”
Niannian’s voice was muffled but clearly happy. “I went to school! I ate two bowls of rice at noon, and Teacher Huahua even praised me.”
The light in the small bedroom was off, and the glow in the dark stickers emitted a soft light. Shen Jiangxu’s face was hidden in the dim light, full of gentleness.
She echoed, “Niannian is amazing.”
Niannian laughed shyly and continued, “And also, after school, I went to the park and played with a little kitten.”
As she spoke, Niannian suddenly opened her eyes and looked at Shen Jiangxu in the dim light. “Mom, I like kittens.”
Niannian going to the park to feed kittens wasn’t a one off thing. Shen Jiangxu sometimes took her, so it didn’t seem problematic.
After thinking for a moment, Shen Jiangxu said, “How about Mom goes with you another day, and we take the little kitten home?”
“Okay”
