- Chapter 91 - Cooking and Video
“Delicious.”
As expected from a Christmas party, there was a large variety of rich, luxurious dishes.
Roast beef, gratin, minestrone soup, and—most impressive of all—a whole roasted chicken.
Inside the chicken were chunky carrots and tender potatoes—a proper, authentic dish.
“Wait, all of this was made by Setsuko-san?”
“No, actually? Most of it this time was made by Haruki.”
“Really?”
“Hehe, surprised?”
“Not exactly surprised.”
It was just unexpected.
I never doubted Haruki’s cooking skills.
Having had her cook for me several times before, I honestly thought she was capable.
But to make all these dishes by herself.
Each dish seemed quite time-consuming and involved, and there were so many of them.
Even if she and Setsuko-san had made them together, I’d be impressed and grateful.
But she made all this on her own?
“Um, what are you doing?”
I suddenly realized I was standing in front of Haruki with my hands clasped together.
“To the gods, the Buddha, and Haruki-sama.”
“Wait, what’s with that?”
“It’s just my way of saying thanks and that I love you.”
“Mmm, hearing that makes me feel like all this cooking was worth it, gulp, gulp.”
“Easy, easy, calm down, Haruki.”
“Whose fault do you think this is, huh?”
Blushing bright red, Haruki looked away.
She seemed nervous, and to hide her embarrassment, she quickly swallowed some minestrone.
I get it—I do the same when I’m embarrassed, drinking something to calm down.
“By the way, what’s Setsuko-san doing?”
“Oh, nothing really—hehe.”
I noticed Setsuko-san was holding up her smartphone and gave her a suspicious look.
“Nothing? Aren’t you filming us?”
“Sorry! I thought you wouldn’t mind. Was it a problem?”
“Not at all, but I wondered how Haruki would feel about it.”
“Mom! You better delete that right now! You’re showing a face I don’t want anyone to see!”
I really wish she’d stop casually filming embarrassing moments of her daughter and her boyfriend.
“I recently cleared some storage space, so I can take lots of pictures now.”
“Setsuko-san is pretty free-spirited, isn’t she?”
“Yeah, she is. Honestly, I think Dad is the most level-headed one in the family.”
At least it’s clear she’s not the level-headed one in front of me.
I suppose this is her way of showing love—wanting to preserve memories with her daughter.
Thinking that, I took a bite of the roast beef.
It was gentle and flavorful—a testament to the care put into making it.
