- Chapter 82 - Chicken Steak and Glasses
If I had to explain how to make chicken steak in the simplest terms, it’d be: grill the meat and season it.
Yeah, that’s a bit too simple.
No one would understand it from just that.
“First, you need to make small cuts in the chicken with a knife.”
“Sensei, may I ask what the purpose of this step is?”
Haruki raised her hand with a serious look on her face.
But I could tell she was joking—she was clearly forcing that serious expression while wearing fake glasses out of nowhere.
Where did she even get those?
“Chicken has tendons, so you cut them to tenderize the meat. Without this step, it won’t come out soft.”
“Ohhh, I see!”
Still wearing her glasses, Haruki picked up a knife and started cutting the tendons beside me.
It takes some effort to pierce the meat evenly all over, but while it’s tedious, it isn’t difficult.
Some might ask if going this far is really necessary—but if we’re serving this to others, I don’t want to cut corners.
If it were just for myself, I’d probably be more relaxed about it.
But regardless, both Haruki and I worked carefully, making sure to cut the meat thoroughly.
“Hey, can I ask something?”
“What is it?”
“Where did you get those glasses?”
“Oh, these? They’re just for show—fake glasses!”
“Yeah, I figured that much.”
I could’ve sworn she wasn’t wearing them earlier.
Now I was really curious why she suddenly had them on.
Even so, I kept my eyes focused on the chicken and the knife.
“It’s a little image change, you know? Don’t you think they’re cute?”
“Yeah, they’re definitely cute.”
“Hehe, thanks.”
Haruki looked so genuinely happy that I almost took my eyes off the meat.
“I was just thinking, I guess even gyaru wear glasses sometimes.”
“Ah, yeah. It’s not super common, but some do! Like, colored lenses and stuff—not really my style though.”
“Yeah, I could see you pulling off sunglasses.”
“Should I wear some next time?”
“Definitely. I want to see that.”
“Well well, if it’s a request from my boyfriend, I suppose I must oblige.”
I don’t really know how to explain it.
We weren’t even looking at each other, both focused on our tasks.
But just chatting like this made everything feel fun.
“My, my. You two really get along, don’t you?”
“O-Oh, Oe-san?”
Oe-san walked into the kitchen holding a bunch of vegetables.
“Um, how long were you listening?”
Haruki asked nervously.
“Let’s see from the part where you said, ‘Sensei, may I ask what the purpose of this step is?’”
“That’s basically the beginning!”
Crushed by embarrassment, I slumped forward.
If only she’d come in a little earlier.
“Sorry! You two were so in sync, I wasn’t sure if I should interrupt.”
““No, it’s totally fine!””
“You really are such a sweet couple,” she said, beaming from ear to ear.
And honestly—I didn’t mind hearing that at all.
