- Chapter 7 - The First Fetal Movement, A Night When Two Hearts Dance
Haruka sat comfortably on the sofa, both hands resting on her stomach. Now in her 18th week, every time she felt her belly growing larger day by day, she had more moments of truly realizing a new life was dwelling there. Though the morning sickness from before had settled, she’d begun feeling the weight of her belly, yet this change felt somehow precious.
“Hey, Mana-chan… it’s already gotten this big, hasn’t it?”
As Haruka spoke while stroking her stomach, Mana sat down nearby and gently placed her hand on Haruka’s belly. Mana’s stomach had similarly rounded out, and the two naturally looked at each other.
“It really has… we’ve both gotten bigger.”
Mana smiled slightly as she placed a hand on her own stomach too. Each time she touched it, she could clearly feel the reality that a baby was inside. Haruka’s gaze shifted to Mana’s hand, the movement of her fingers somehow gentle, warming Haruka’s heart just by watching.
“Mana-chan’s belly is really beautiful too.”
Haruka murmured this with a somewhat embarrassed smile. Mana’s skin looked smooth, glowing softly in the gentle light. Seeing this filled Haruka’s chest with a strange emotion, making her feel anew that they were both nurturing life together now.
“Thank you Haruka-chan, you’re really beautiful too.”
Mana said this while looking steadily at Haruka’s face. Her eyes overflowed with tenderness, conveying something deeper than just words. Naturally, they took each other’s hands and began slowly stroking each other’s bellies.
“Hey, the baby might start moving soon. Thinking about that makes me kind of nervous.”
Haruka spoke with a slightly tense expression. Feeling the warmth of Haruka’s palm, Mana nodded quietly.
“That’s right! I wonder what it will feel like. It’s a little scary but I’m looking forward to it too.”
For a while, they held each other’s hands silently, thinking about what was to come. Then suddenly, Haruka let out a small gasp as if catching her breath.
“Just now, I think I felt it just now!”
Startled by Haruka’s voice, Mana immediately placed her hand on Haruka’s belly. Haruka’s eyes widened, her heart pounding with excitement at that tiny movement she’d felt for the first time.
“Really? What did it feel like?”
Mana, looking excited too, tried to press her ear against Haruka’s stomach, but it still couldn’t be felt from outside. Yet she felt like they were sharing this joy together.
“It was like… just a little… a gentle tap-tap… still very faint, but I’m sure I felt movement.”
Haruka’s voice trembled, but her face was filled with joy. Seeing that expression made Mana’s heart feel warm. She gently wrapped an arm around Haruka’s shoulder, and they quietly savored the moment together.
“That’s amazing! I want to feel it soon too.”
Mana murmured while gently stroking her own stomach. Then suddenly, she too sensed a faint sensation. Gasping in surprise, she immediately squeezed Haruka’s hand.
“…It moved!”
Their eyes widened, and smiles naturally spread across their faces. The first fetal movements. Though they were tiny, fleeting movements, that moment brought them greater joy than anything else.
“We both felt it.”
Haruka said this while looking at Mana’s face. Tears welled in both their eyes, but they weren’t tears of sadness or anxiety—they overflowed with emotion and happiness.
Mana gently stroked Haruka’s cheek, and their faces drew closer. The realization that new lives dwelled within each of their bellies was strengthening their bond even more.
“We’re really doing something amazing, aren’t we?”
Haruka murmured this and rested her head on Mana’s shoulder. Mana nodded deeply at her words, and they both quietly closed their eyes. While gently stroking each other’s bellies, they envisioned the life to come with their new babies.
Their hearts felt calm and warm, as if they had become one. The first fetal movements each had felt were the first step in their family’s story beginning, and that moment would surely remain a precious memory for them forever.
