- Chapter 19 - The Miracle of Two
At the end of August, the wind chime rang refreshingly in the twilight room. Haruka sat in a chair by the window, gently brushing Mana’s hair. Though her large belly made movement difficult, touching Mana’s soft hair felt comforting.
“Hey, Mana-chan. Wouldn’t it be easier if you cut your hair a bit shorter? After the baby’s born, you might not have much time for upkeep.”
At Haruka’s words, Mana showed a slightly thoughtful expression.
“You think so! But you always say you like my hair.”
Haruka couldn’t help but chuckle at Mana’s response.
“Oh my! That’s why you’ve been growing it out?”
Mana blushed and nodded slightly. The gesture was so adorable that Haruka instinctively gave a light kiss to Mana’s neck.
“Whoa, that tickles!”
As Mana squirmed, the baby moved vigorously inside her belly.
“Ah, the boys moved! Are your twin girls awake too, Haruka-chan?”
When Mana turned around and placed her hand on Haruka’s belly, sure enough, the girls were also moving energetically.
“Yeah, seems like everyone’s awake. We’ll get to meet them soon…”
Haruka’s voice trembled slightly. Mana immediately noticed the change and gently grasped Haruka’s hand.
“Are you scared?”
“Yeah, but I’m also looking forward to it. It’s a strange feeling.”
Mana knelt down and sat in front of Haruka, pressing her ear against Haruka’s large belly.
“The girls seem healthy, right? They’re going to be big sisters.”
“Oh my! We don’t even know yet who’s going to be the older or younger sister!”
They laughed together. These trivial conversations felt more precious than anything else right now.
“Hey, Mana-chan… We’ve come this far, haven’t we?”
At Haruka’s words, Mana nodded quietly. Looking back, the pregnancy period felt both long and short. The days they had shared various anxieties and joys together were now about to enter a new stage.
“I’m really glad you’re here with me, Haruka-chan.”
Tears welled up in Mana’s eyes. Haruka cupped Mana’s cheeks with both hands and gently wiped away her tears.
“Don’t cry. Our children will be born soon, you know?”
“But I’m just too happy.”
At Mana’s honest words, tears now spilled from Haruka’s eyes too. They pressed their foreheads together and quietly caught their breath.
“Our family… It’s going to be a wonderful family, right?”
“Yeah, definitely. Because we’re building it together, all of us.”
Outside the window, the sunset colored the sky, and the room was bathed in gentle light. The wind chime rang with its cool sound once more.
“Oh, that’s right. Should we think about the crib placement one more time?”
Mana said as if suddenly remembering.
“Huh, again? We just decided on it the other day.”
“But there might be a better arrangement.”
Haruka couldn’t help but smile at Mana’s meticulous nature. Each of these casual conversations was becoming an irreplaceable memory.
“Well then, let’s think about it one more time. But this is the last time, okay?”
“Yeah, I promise!”
Holding hands, they slowly stood up. Their movements were awkward with their large bellies, but even that felt precious. Expectations for the new life about to begin gradually filled both their hearts. In the twilight room, a new family story was just about to begin.
