- Chapter 15 - Maternity Life, Twice the Joy
On a humid, drizzly afternoon in the rainy season, Haruka and Mana were looking through an old photo album. The sound of rain tapping against the window was soothing as they sat nestled together on the sofa, each cradling their noticeably pregnant bellies.
“Ah, this is a photo from my elementary school sports day!”
In the photo Haruka pointed to, there was a girl with short hair and a beaming smile. Mana leaned in to look, and her cheeks relaxed into a smile without her realizing it.
“Haruka-chan, you were cute even back then! This smile is just like the one you have now.”
“Aw, that’s embarrassing!”
As Haruka said this, her face turning red, Mana gently poked her cheek with a finger. The feeling of touching Haruka’s soft cheek was so pleasant that she couldn’t help but do it several times.
“Mana-chan, you’re being mean!”
“But Haruka-chan’s reactions are just too cute.”
At Mana’s frank words, Haruka’s cheeks flushed even more. Watching Mana’s long eyelashes flutter gently, Haruka felt her heart beat a little faster.
“Hey, do you remember when we first met?”
At Mana’s question, Haruka’s eyes sparkled.
“Of course! It was at the university music club, right? You were playing the piano, and I was completely captivated by the sight of you.”
“That’s right. When you came into the classroom holding your violin case, looking so shy, my heart skipped a beat too.”
They looked at each other and chuckled softly. Mana gently ran her fingers through Haruka’s long hair as she continued.
“But I didn’t realize how you felt until you confessed, did I?”
“Yeah! I liked you so, so much, but I just couldn’t bring myself to say it. Every day, I was happy just being near you, soothed by the sound of your piano.”
Hearing Haruka’s words, Mana couldn’t help but hug her tightly. Their large bellies made it a bit cramped, but that too felt precious.
“You know when I ate the lunch you made for me for the first time, I was so incredibly happy. It was the first time anyone had ever cared for me like that.”
Mana’s voice trembled slightly, and Haruka instinctively gave her cheek a light kiss.
“You were my first too. The first person I ever loved this much.”
Their fingers naturally intertwined. Outside the window, the rain continued to fall gently.
“Hey, I wonder what kind of children ours will grow up to be?”
As Mana said this, gently placing a hand on her belly, Haruka also stroked her own stomach.
“They’ll probably be lively kids… Just thinking about it makes my heart race.”
“Do you think they’ll come to love music like we do?”
“That would be wonderful. But I hope they each find their own passions too.”
Mana rested her head on Haruka’s shoulder and closed her eyes.
“When I was a child, I used to play the piano with my mother on rainy days. Just like now, listening to this kind of sound.”
“Oh, so that’s why you always have such a peaceful expression on rainy days.”
Haruka stroked Mana’s soft hair, breathing in its scent deeply. The sweet fragrance of her shampoo was calming.
“What about you, Haruka-chan? Any childhood memories?”
“For me, I guess it’s memories of catching bugs in the yard. Thinking back, I wasn’t very girly at all.”
“That’s not true! I think your curiosity is really charming.”
At Mana’s words, Haruka smiled happily. Glancing outside, she noticed the rain had begun to let up a little.
“I want our children to have lots of wonderful memories too.”
“Yeah, I’m sure they’ll be wonderful. Let’s make sure to properly convey our love to them.”
They turned their attention back to the album. It was filled with the story of their journey together. From their first meeting until today, every happy moment was captured in each photograph.
“Hey, Haruka-chan.”
“What?”
“I love you.”
At Mana’s honest words, tears welled up in Haruka’s eyes. Whether it was due to hormones or not, her emotions had been overflowing more easily lately.
“I love you too, Mana-chan.”
They gazed quietly at each other, then softly pressed their lips together. Outside the window, the rain continued to fall gently, and the peaceful afternoon of the two women carrying new life slowly passed by.
