- Chapter 2 - Want This Orange Cat That's Trying to Fool You?
“Knock, knock, knock.”
“Knock, knock, knock.”
His entire feline being froze in shock.
Gu Chaoyu!
Why on earth is he knocking? Didn’t he get my text?
Oh right! He called looking for me. Look at this cat brain of mine—just not as sharp as a human’s. Best to hide for now!
Lin Xiaomiao’s feline brain raced. Cat instincts propelled him to dart behind the shoe cabinet by the door, peeking out only with his big, round eyes, staring intently at the slightly ajar door (PS: Don’t follow Lin Xiaomiao’s example, always close your door securely when you get home!).
Outside, Gu Chaoyu’s deep, gentle voice drifted through the door.
“Lin Mucí, happy birthday.”
“I saw your lights on, so I left the gift by the door. Don’t forget to grab it.”
Lin Xiaomiao held his breath, not daring to make a single meow.
So he was just delivering a birthday present…
Gu Chaoyu actually remembered his birthday. A guy this perfect, would it be too much to ask him to be my top?
Mm, decision made. First, I’ll live with Dr. Gu openly as a fat orange cat, learn his preferences, then strike in human form. Guaranteed to hit the mark!
Hehehe, Gu-brother, don’t run! I’m coming to chase you!
“Meow~ Meow~? (Something feels off.)”
What could it be? Never mind. Why trouble the kitty? Forget it, forget it! Better hurry out and stage a chance encounter!
Footsteps echoed again, growing fainter and fainter.
Dr. Gu was walking toward his own doorstep. Right now, he must be facing away from it.
Seize the moment! Opportunity doesn’t wait!
Just moments ago, she’d been agonizing over how to orchestrate the perfect chance encounter. Now, opportunity was practically knocking at his door!
Lin Xiaomiao hesitated no longer. She darted swiftly through the open door crack and landed on the safety staircase steps. Peeking out cautiously,
his eyes immediately locked onto Gu Chaoyu’s tall, straight silhouette.
He had already shed his coat, wearing only a crisp white shirt tucked neatly into his slightly loose black dress pants.
The sharp lines of the shirt, tucked into the trousers, accentuated his broad shoulders and narrow waist. He had a perfect inverted triangle physique. Paired with those long legs, his silhouette alone was enough to make Lin Xiaomiao’s legs go weak.
Suppressing his excitement, Lin Xiaomiao padded forward on his four short legs, determined to approach with what she considered his most elegant and adorable catwalk.
She planned to circle around to Gu Chaoyu’s front, then look up at him with the most innocent gaze, meowing softly like a grandma’s purr to melt his heart.
Hmm, the plan was perfect!
However, he had seriously overestimated the physical coordination of his new plump & orange body.
Just as he was about to take a step,
“Meow?!”
Lin Xiaomiao felt his body suddenly lighten, and the entire cat lost control.
He watched helplessly as he rolled down the stairs like an orange fur ball, tumbling down.
The world spun.
“Meow-!”
A pitiful cat cry echoed through the entire hallway.
Gu Chaoyu, who had been about to unlock the door, froze.
He whipped his head around, following the sound, and caught sight of a plump orange cat lying flat on its back at the staircase corner. Motionless, it looked utterly miserable.
Gu Chaoyu’s brows instantly knitted together as he hurried over.
He crouched down and carefully scooped up the orange furball.
Lin Xiaomiao was nearly in tears from the pain. His paw seemed injured, burning fiercely.
But when Gu Chaoyu’s warm hands cradled him, and he caught the faint scent of mugwort on the man’s skin, a deep sense of security enveloped him. The pain in his paw seemed to fade.
He was being held in the arms of his crush!
Success! Though the process hadn’t been pleasant…
Lin Xiaomiao’s eyes were teary, but inside, fireworks were going off.
He lifted his head, his own large, watery eyes fixed on the handsome face mere inches away.
Gu Chaoyu’s features were deep-set, his nose high and straight, his thin lips slightly pursed as he meticulously examined the injury.
【Oh my god, he’s so gentle! His palm is so warm! This damn sense of security!】
【He won’t just dump me after checking me, will he? Please, no!】
【Please, please take me home! I’m easy to care for, I don’t eat much, and I use the litter box myself!】
Lin Xiaomiao’s mind was frantically scrolling with thoughts, wishing she could just shout them out loud.
“?
Gu Chaoyu scanned his surroundings, thinking, “There’s no one else here. Where did that sound come from? Am I hearing things?”
He pushed aside his doubts and carefully examined the plump orange kitten. Finding only minor scratches on its paws and nothing serious, he finally relaxed.
He looked down at the fluffy little creature in his arms, its wet eyes fixed on him, overflowing with dependence and pleading.
The kitten wore no collar. Though its fur was clean, it was clearly a stray.
Gu Chaoyu felt an inexplicable softness in his heart.
“Looks like you don’t have an owner either. Come home with me.”
With that, he cradled the cat in one arm while unlocking his door with the other.
Lin Xiaomiao’s cat ears twitched.
Home?
His home?!
Happiness came so suddenly, he nearly meowed out loud.
Gu Chaoyu’s home mirrored his own character—clean, tidy, and meticulously arranged in shades of black, white, and gray. The minimalist decor perfectly complemented his seemingly aloof exterior.
He was gently placed onto the plush sofa.
Gu Chaoyu turned to fetch the first-aid kit and returned swiftly.
Sitting at the edge of the sofa, he lifted Lin Xiaomiao’s paw. With a cotton swab dipped in iodine solution, he carefully cleaned the wound.
The icy sensation made Lin Xiaomiao instinctively pull his paw back.
Gu Chaoyu paused, his movements growing even gentler.
His face drew so close that Lin Xiaomiao could clearly see his long, thick lashes casting a small shadow under the light.
This proximity had already entered dangerous territory.
A crystal-clear voice exploded in Lin Xiaomiao’s mind without warning.
【His lashes are so long! Longer than a girl’s! Up close, his looks are even more unreal! Absolutely flawless from every angle!】
【I want him to kiss me, hug me, and lift me up!】
Gu Chaoyu’s iodine-applying motion froze instantly.
He jerked his head up, a flicker of bewilderment in his eyes.
Was he hearing things again? Or… ?
Though he’d gained the ability to read minds on his 25th birthday, it had always been rather useless.
He could only vaguely sense strong emotions—like joy, sadness, or anger—from beings within a meter. But never before had he heard such clear “inner voices” as he did today!
Was he just exhausted from seeing too many patients lately?
He glanced unobtrusively at the kitten on the sofa.
The little creature lay obediently, letting him handle it, its large, sparkling eyes fixed unblinkingly on his face.
It must be an auditory hallucination.
Gu Chaoyu once again suppressed the doubt in his heart and continued his task.
After treating the wound, he stroked the kitten’s round head & the texture felt surprisingly good.
“I’ll call you Orange from now on,” he said casually.
Lin Xiaomiao, still basking in the bliss of being petted by his crush, nearly choked on his breath at the name.
Orange?
【What a lame name! So half-assed!】
【But whatever, if Gu Chaoyu says it, even lame sounds good! Orange it is!】
The clear voice of complaint once again pierced Gu Chaoyu’s mind with pinpoint accuracy.
This time, he was certain it wasn’t an auditory hallucination. He had genuinely heard the plump orange cat’s inner thoughts. But how did it know his name?
Upon reflection, there had been no cat in the stairwell moments ago. Before this cat appeared, the door to Lin Mucí’s home (which hadn’t been fully closed) seemed to shift slightly. And today happened to be Lin Mucí’s 25th birthday. Could it be…
A preposterous thought began to take root in his mind.
Gu Chaoyu narrowed his eyes, staring at Lin Xiaomiao with an ambiguous smile playing at the corners of his mouth. Suddenly, he spoke.
“Don’t like that name?”
“Then I’ll call you…”
He deliberately drew out the last syllable. As Lin Xiaomiao lifted his head in confusion, he enunciated two words deliberately.
“Mucí?”
“Meow?!”
Lin Xiaomiao, who had been licking his paw, froze instantly, forgetting to spit out the fur in his mouth.
