Distance Formula - Chapter 8
Chapter 8
“The situation is similar to last time. Overall, nothing obvious shows up. You absolutely must increase contact with the person to see any effect; otherwise, your condition will continue to worsen.”
The doctor handed the report to her. “Take a look. If you don’t treat it soon, the deterioration will accelerate later.”
Bai Biqing took the report, scanned the densely packed, familiar numbers, and casually tossed it into Su Shang’s lap. She propped up her chin. “Do you have medication? Dispense some.”
Su Shang looked at her in confusion, twisted her arm perplexedly, and softly chastised, “What are you doing? Why are you taking medication for no reason?”
Bai Biqing had stopped medication for some time. If she hadn’t met Su Yanshi, she might have brought home a large supply last time, as her condition was special, requiring regular check-ups and periodic prescription refills.
She patted Su Shang’s hand, signaling her to relax, and looked back at the doctor. “Dispense it. I was thinking, if the person is unwilling, I still need a contingency plan. I can’t just let myself slowly die of pain, can I?”
Su Shang immediately became anxious. “What nonsense are you talking about! What death and all that? Don’t talk rubbish!”
Bai Biqing insisted on her point of view. “I don’t fight battles I’m unprepared for. You all know me. Besides, I’m just saying if. And I do need to take medication now. Dispense it at the full dosage. I know what I’m doing.”
The doctor smiled helplessly at her serious tone. She respected Bai Biqing’s choice. “Wait, I’ll write the prescription for you.”
By the time the two left the hospital, it was almost four in the afternoon. Bai Biqing took out her phone midway and glanced at it. Su Yanshi hadn’t messaged her. She put her phone away with a placid expression and told Su Shang, “Let’s go back, my dear. I’m cooking. I’m practically starving.”
This time, Bai Biqing was driving, and Su Shang sat in the passenger seat, sighing melancholically. She was filled with sorrow and a slight sense of disappointment. “Seriously, are you so lacking in confidence that you can’t win over Su Yanshi?”
“If you don’t know how to pursue someone, I can teach you! You look like you’ve given up on yourself today. It’s only been two days! Pull yourself together!”
Bai Biqing couldn’t be bothered with Su Shang’s strange line of thought and spoke up to change the topic. “Let’s just make some noodles tonight. I’m too lazy to stir-fry anything, and we don’t have many ingredients anyway.”
Su Shang protested, “Don’t change the subject! I’m telling you, the consequences will be severe if you don’t answer today.”
Bai Biqing quickly glanced at her, teasing, “Or should I get out of the car right now?”
Su Shang stared straight ahead.
“There’s really nothing. I’m just considering what to do if the outcome isn’t what I expect. I need to be prepared with two options.” Bai Biqing smoothly parked the car. Her tone was casual, as if she were discussing something trivial. “Su Yanshi is great. I have confidence, but it’s certainly not one hundred percent. I have to leave myself some room, so I don’t lose too badly.”
“Alright, hurry up and get out. Didn’t you book your tickets already? You still need to pack.”
Bai Biqing got out of the car first, tapping twice on the car window to urge her. “Hurry up.”
Su Shang let out an irritated low curse and slammed the car door shut. She turned her sadness and indignation into appetite: “I want two eggs added.”
Bai Biqing humored her: “The whole carton is fine.”
The Beta’s cooking was excellent. Su Shang had two bowls before wiping her mouth and slumping back in the chair, lying flat. “By the way, what do you usually talk about with Su Yanshi? I feel like she’s a little introverted.”
When people have nothing to do, their curiosity increases.
Bai Biqing knew her well and showed her the chat interface directly. “Everything, except verbally.”
The single screenshot that framed their entire conversation made Su Shang click her tongue in wonder. She closed her phone in boredom. “Hiding it so well. Do you two have some unspeakable secret?”
Bai Biqing finished washing the dishes and hung up the apron. “None of that. Go take a shower.”
“I just ate…” Su Shang continued her laziness.
The Beta turned to look at her, the warning in her eyes deepening. The Omega successfully received the signal and scrambled into the bathroom before the other person could get angry.
This wasn’t the first time she had stayed at Bai Biqing’s place. For convenience, she always kept a few changes of clothes there. When they got to Shenhai City, she would probably start shopping and buy a whole new wardrobe. It was common for her to leave empty-handed and return with a carload of luggage.
But Bai Biqing was different. She used this time to organize her luggage and casually tidy up the house. Su Shang emerged to this sight and exclaimed, “What a good fortune for anyone who ends up with you! Look how diligent you are.”
Bai Biqing glanced at her and suddenly recalled the compliment she had given Su Yanshi—Wife.
It seemed she wouldn’t see the little Alpha doing chores; imagining it, she’d probably be clumsy and flustered anyway.
She couldn’t help but lower her head and smile. She felt a surprising urge to send Su Yanshi a message. She picked up her phone, typed something, thought about it, and deleted it. After a moment of hesitation, she turned off her phone.
This look of indecision was fully noted by Su Shang. She leaned against the sofa, munching on an apple, looking completely knowledgeable. “Send it to Su Yanshi. Why are you suddenly so hesitant? That’s not like you, Painter Bai.”
Bai Biqing lightly waved her finger from side to side. She raised an eyebrow and muffled a reply with a smile, “This is different.”
The Alpha hadn’t messaged her yet; she needed to wait a bit longer.
Su Shang found her confident demeanor quite irritating, scoffed, and focused on browsing her own news feed.
She was the prophet today, confidently predicting a happy ending for them.
The two slowly dawdled until nearly half-past ten before finishing up and getting ready for bed. Bai Biqing stretched her back. For some reason, she felt particularly sleepy tonight. She lay in bed looking at her phone, and as expected, there was no message from Su Yanshi.
She left a small light on in the room. The faint light and the screen’s brightness bracketed Bai Biqing, making one side soft and the other cold, giving her face a more exquisite look. She typed quickly. Just before the message successfully sent, she turned over, fully exposing herself to the soft yellow light. The hard screen light subtly blended with the soft light at that instant, not at all jarring.
Goodnight.
Before Bai Biqing’s phone could automatically dim, she received Su Yanshi’s almost instantaneous reply: Goodnight, Teacher Bai.
Bai Biqing contentedly tapped the screen. The next message she sent, imbued with a tenderness she hadn’t even noticed, was surprisingly firm: Go to sleep now. Don’t reply to messages anymore.
She closed the unnecessary apps, lay flat on her back, and let out a sound as she gazed at the ceiling by the moonlight filtering in.
Her eyes gradually lost focus, and she thought again: the Alpha is quite cute.
The night was calm and uneventful.
Su Yanshi left early the next morning. Bai Biqing’s flight was in the afternoon. Su Shang only arrived late after Bai Biqing had finished lunch, sitting in a chair with messy hair, slowly recovering, her brain still sluggishly starting up.
Bai Biqing, accustomed to her, cleanly and efficiently packed up the dishes and ordered takeout for her.
Just as she was about to put it away, she received a notification—it was from Su Yanshi.
She had sent a picture of the sky, a deep blue. The clouds were stuck together in large blocks, the rest of the image blurred, leaving only what was intended.
Su Yanshi: So beautiful.
Bai Biqing smiled, replying: It is beautiful. I like this kind of sky.
Su Shang, who had peered over at some point, spoke in a strange tone, “It definitely looks like a casual shot; the technique isn’t great.”
Bai Biqing didn’t get annoyed. She only said, “Technique isn’t important. What’s important is the motive.”
This is the Alpha’s first step in actively contacting her.
