- Chapter 19 - Evening Village
Li Yue blinked her eyes very slightly. Remaining unmoved, she reached out and pinched Luo Mingzi’s chin, forcing her to look outside the kitchen.
Beyond the camera lens was the world of the production crew staff members and celebrity teams, hundreds of people standing row upon row against the walls, not to mention the cameras of all sizes.
“Teacher Luo, please watch your words and actions,” Li Yue said softly, releasing her hand.
A confused staff member walked over from outside and pointed to the microphone. Li Yue curled the corners of her mouth into a gentle smile, nodded to the staff member, and mouthed silently: “One moment.”
Seeing her reach out to turn the mic back on, Luo Mingzi grabbed Li Yue’s wrist and said unwillingly, “You don’t want to kiss me?”
They hadn’t seen each other for a long, long time. She had missed Li Yue so much she felt she was going crazy when she saw Li Yue with her own eyes this morning, she almost thought she was still dreaming. The loss of control was real, the surge of emotion was real, she felt as though she had suddenly returned to when she first met Li Yue, impulsively wanting to get closer, refusing to give up even after being rejected time and time again.
But the difference now was that Li Yue was hers. She loved Li Yue just as Li Yue loved her. Today, Li Yue had rejected her more than once, which made Luo Mingzi ten thousand times sadder than when they first met.
She desperately wished the world consisted only of her and Li Yue, she felt like dropping a hundred thousand tons of explosives right here. Luo Mingzi puffed out her cheeks in annoyance. Finally, she picked up a vegetable root from the cutting board and tossed it heartlessly into the trash can.
Go to hell, you twisty little vegetable root!
Li Yue twitched her lips and pressed down on Luo Mingzi’s petulant hand. Just as a “vegetable root tug-of-war” was about to break out, Li Yue suddenly leaned down and whispered in Luo Mingzi’s ear: “Teacher Luo, some things cannot be started.”
Once started, they are hard to end.
Luo Mingzi froze, her eyes widening as she looked up at Li Yue.
Acting as if she had said nothing at all, Li Yue stood up straight with a calm expression and resumed chopping vegetables. Luo Mingzi suddenly reached up and covered her face. Li Yue said, “Don’t go out until your face isn’t red anymore.”
“Oh, I know!” Luo Mingzi stamped her feet while covering her face, her voice as soft as dough. “It’s one thing not to give me a ‘taste,’ but you’re intentionally seducing me.”
“Still as wicked as ever.”
Hearing Luo Mingzi’s accusation, Li Yue said calmly, “In the hidden compartment of my suitcase, there is a key card for my new dormitory.”
“Teacher Luo is welcome to drop by when she has time.”
Luo Mingzi: “…”
Her face turned even redder. Suppressing the urge to bolt out of the room, she lowered her hands and said to Li Yue, “The guest for the second episode, Gong Jing. Sister Gong, she sneered at me a lot during the breaks. Mostly it was just what people say online, it wasn’t as bad as what the anti-fans say, but she said I didn’t deserve my position, that I was ruining the atmosphere of the entertainment industry, that my mind was flighty, and that I was only in it for the money.”
Li Yue looked at Luo Mingzi. Luo Mingzi touched her face and said, “Of course, when I first entered the industry, I was definitely doing it for the money. I’m so beautiful otherwise, how would I have landed our Goddess Li?”
“Heh.” Li Yue gave a light chuckle, her gaze dropping back to her work.
Outside the kitchen, their assigned director was pacing back and forth, scratching his head in frustration. The cameraman, lugging his gear, filmed the silhouettes of the two through the window and couldn’t help but remark: “What a peaceful, beautiful scene.”
Amidst that “peaceful scene,” Luo Mingzi continued, “Sister Xuezhen was there too. I came to Evening Village because I wanted to get close to Sister Xuezhen and Uncle Da Jun. They are acting professors at Jinglin Drama University, and I wanted to ask them to teach me how to act. But maybe because I hadn’t seen you in so long, my mental state crumbled a bit after being criticized. Plus, Sister Gong is an old friend of Sister Xuezhen.”
In the end, it created an awkward atmosphere among the guests. Luo Mingzi felt her thick skin had truly been forged while chasing Li Yue after the second episode, she was actually able to continue interacting with Wu Xuezhen and her husband as if nothing had happened.
“But you aren’t the kind of person she described, are you?” Li Yue said.
Luo Mingzi puffed out her chest proudly and said, “Right!”
And now Li Yue had come to help her achieve her goal. In the past, Luo Mingzi would always tell Li Yue everything, if she felt wronged, she’d whine if she was targeted, she’d cry loudly. But during these past six months of communicating only by phone, she had started to hesitate. She wanted to tell Li Yue about her grievances, but feared Li Yue would find her annoying. In her third year in the industry, she had moved from being hot-headed to feeling unwilling to give up, she couldn’t drop her work to see Li Yue, and she didn’t want to bother Li Yue with the trivia of her job.
Worries piled up in her heart. But there was one thing she never hesitated about: being with Li Yue.
And then, Li Yue came to find her.
The dark clouds vanished.
Luo Mingzi hummed and leaned over, nuzzling Li Yue’s shoulder. “Babe, why are you so good to me?”
Li Yue said calmly, “Because I love you.”
“…”
Luo Mingzi froze entirely, then raised her hands again to rub her face frantically.
In the yard, You Yang walked over and asked tentatively, “Respected Great Teacher Li, do you need my help?”
“Sure.” Li Yue stepped around Luo Mingzi, placed the chopped vegetables on the table, and raised her voice to ask, “Do you want me to teach you how to cook?”
One tuition fee, two people learning! This was great!
Wu Xuezhen pushed Pi Dajun over just as Luo Mingzi came out of the kitchen rubbing her eyes. The three of them collided. Wu Xuezhen curled her lips and asked with a smile, “Disciple, did you get something in your eye again?”
Luo Mingzi: “…It’s because the onions are pungent!”
She curled her lips into a smile and skipped toward the opposite house. As she crossed the yard, she suddenly jumped and did a full turn in the air.
“The weather is so nice~”
Director Liu looked up at the darkening sky and tapped his notebook with his pen.
Fine, the bright moon is out tonight, it is indeed quite nice.
Firewood was tossed into the stove, the flames leaping up in golden-red hues. The range hood worked diligently, whisking away the “sizzle” of the chicken hitting the pan.
The kitchen was crowded. You Yang even took out a small notebook to record every step Li Yue took.
“It smells so good.” Wu Xuezhen stared at the pot and said, “Li Yue brought the chicken and seasonings herself. That’s so thoughtful.”
Li Yue smiled and said, “I just wanted to show off my skills a little. I hope I’m not embarrassing myself.”
Was that really it? Wu Xuezhen slapped Pi Dajun hard. Pi Dajun looked back in pain, thinking his wife’s smile looked very strange. You Yang quickly added, “If this is ’embarrassing yourself,’ then what are we?”
Pi Dajun said, “We are ‘displaying our stupidity.'”
Everyone burst into laughter.
Luo Mingzi, who had obtained the “clearance card,” came skipping back happily. She hopped around behind everyone and asked, “What? What are you talking about?”
“We’re saying Goddess Luo is peerless,” You Yang said.
Luo Mingzi said proudly, “That is indeed true.”
“Pfft.” Li Yue shook her head.
The moon hung over the mountain peak, and the small courtyard was filled with the aroma of food. You Yang brought a large stainless steel basin to the table. Two fragrant free range chickens from Nanhai City made everyone’s mouth water. Except for two dishes contributed by the program crew from a local specialty restaurant, everything else was made by Li Yue.
Looking at the woman who had just taken off her apron and returned to her “ethereal goddess” persona, who could connect her to this table of food?
“Is this the ‘contrast’ you were talking about?” Pi Dajun asked You Yang.
You Yang thought for a moment and said, “This is called the ‘Hand of God.'”
Luo Mingzi excitedly held her bowl and asked, “Is it ready?”
“Can we eat now?”
Wu Xuezhen waved her hand and declared, “Let’s eat!”
“Yay!”
Li Yue sat down and glanced at the beer on the table. She thought for a moment, then first served Luo Mingzi the promised pair of chicken feet. Luo Mingzi looked over longingly, picked up two empty glasses nearby, and said softly, “Let’s have a little drink.”
Great. Today really is good weather.
Li Yue curled her lips into a smile.
Full and satisfied, the guests went happily to wash the dishes, leaving only Li Yue with a guitar tucked into her arms. Though it wasn’t her usual Veromca, the player’s voice gave it immense value.
“There are always stories growing in the soil, growing, growing, sprouting wings to soar in the sea of clouds…” Li Yue plucked the strings, her low voice peaceful under the moonlight, echoing through the evening village.
“My heart is wandering, flowing toward that evening village. In the village, there’s a little me, picking up starlight in the field ridges.”
Luo Mingzi wiped her hands and walked over, sitting beside Li Yue, swinging her feet as she looked at the moon.
Li Yue glanced at her and smiled. “Listen to the laughter floating, floating toward that evening village. In the village, there’s a grown-up me, gazing out from under the locust tree.”
“It’s still that same starry sky, still that same evening village. I leave my heart in that place. Please, wind, take it away, take it to her side.”
“Please leave my heart… by her side.”
