- Chapter 15 - Washing Dishes
“Baby! That’s how the baby calls!”
Luo Mingzi finished speaking and suddenly blocked her face with both fists, making a strange sound. Wu Xuezhen, sitting across from her, joined in with “woo-woo-wa-wa” noises, and the two of them burst into laughter.
Li Yue: “…”
“Quick! Say it again for me!” Wu Xuezhen looked incredibly excited, huddling on her stool and clutching her hands together.
Li Yue picked at her noodles, saying unhurriedly, “Aren’t you hungry?”
The aroma of the food wafted through the air, and Luo Mingzi’s stomach let out a loud growl. She stopped talking and buried her head in her meal. The living room went quiet, but three minutes later, a mid-meal Luo Mingzi suddenly began to snicker “chichi,” and Wu Xuezhen followed suit.
Luo Mingzi’s face flushed as she shouted, “Baby!”
Li Yue replied, “Yes?”
“Do you want some water?”
She poured a glass for Luo Mingzi. Across from them, Wu Xuezhen laughed even harder. Pi Dajun, who had just woken up in the yard and come inside looking for water, heard the laughter and looked at Wu Xuezhen in a daze. “What are you laughing at?” he asked curiously.
Wu Xuezhen waved him off, her eyes twinkling as she turned to him. “Old Baby, do you want some water?”
Pi Dajun: “Hiss!”
His blush was visible to the naked eye. He rubbed his hands together, trying to ask calmly, “Where are you feeling unwell?”
“Tsk! No fun at all!” Wu Xuezhen complained to Li Yue and Luo Mingzi. “Old married couples have no sense of romance.”
Luo Mingzi stopped laughing and said seriously, “You and Uncle Dajun are married. Marriage itself is the greatest romance of love.” Li Yue paused for a moment, then nodded.
“People say marriage is the graveyard of love,” Wu Xuezhen thought for a moment, then handed the water glass to Pi Dajun, saying tenderly, “But I’ve never regretted getting married. I’ve been with him for thirty-two years.”
Li Yue said softly, “Because of love, you could stay together for thirty-two years.”
Wu Xuezhen waved her hand, looking embarrassed. Pi Dajun’s face turned even redder, and he put his hands behind his back and started coughing. Being an old couple talking like this in front of the kids… really…
Luo Mingzi finished every drop of the noodle soup and wiped her mouth clean with a tissue. She stood up slowly and, right in front of the two shy elders, suddenly threw her arms open and pulled Li Yue’s head into a hug.
“Baby, I will always love you too! Mua-mua-mua!”
Luo Mingzi’s lips were pouted high.
Pi Dajun, who was drinking water: “Pfft!”
Wu Xuezhen: “Hahaha!”
Li Yue’s face was mostly covered by Luo Mingzi’s arms, her cheek pressed against Luo Mingzi’s chest. Her vision went dark, and her nose was filled with the scent of Luo Mingzi’s body wash.
A scent she couldn’t be more familiar with.
She reached out to tug at Luo Mingzi’s wrist, whispering, “I haven’t showered yet. I’m dirty.”
Luo Mingzi hurriedly said, “No, you’re not.” She let go, pulled Li Yue’s bowl toward her, and said happily, “Because I like you so much, I’ll wash your bowl!”
Wu Xuezhen pulled out a tissue, her gaze drifting toward Li Yue. The woman sitting quietly was like a painting, her expression calm, just as she had been all day. Compared to previous guests, Li Yue’s emotions were restrained, she seemed like the type who valued logic over feeling, always poised and unhurried.
During filming breaks, Wu Xuezhen had overheard the staff referring to Li Yue as “The Pale Cloud.”
Wu Xuezhen felt that was accurate. To her, Li Yue was like a serene, detached white cloud in the sky, while Luo Mingzi was a delicate flower carefully nurtured in a garden. A cloud in the sky and a flower on the ground, two things that shouldn’t have any intersection.
But now, looking at Li Yue’s bright red ears, Wu Xuezhen couldn’t help but think, Oh my, feeling as though she herself was being dyed pink. She took a sip of water and watched Luo Mingzi come over to clear the dishes.
The girl who had been clinging to Li Yue all day, calling her baby and confessing her love, now had the towel wrapped around her wet hair coming loose. When she leaned over, Wu Xuezhen caught a glimpse of Luo Mingzi’s ears, the color was even deeper and more vivid than Li Yue’s. It was like a balloon filled to the absolute limit with water, about to burst at any second.
Wu Xuezhen took another sip of water, watching the two girls walk one after the other toward the kitchen, and smiled. For some reason, she was looking forward to the next twenty-four hours even more.
At the kitchen door, Luo Mingzi made a “No Entry” gesture to Li Yue.
“This place belongs to me now,” Luo Mingzi tilted her chin up and said to Li Yue. “Go rest!”
Li Yue crossed her arms, raised an eyebrow, and said, “The pot needs scrubbing too.”
“I can do it!” Luo Mingzi said decisively. Just one pot and three bowls, she would definitely get them sparkling clean!
Li Yue didn’t argue. She watched Luo Mingzi’s determined and confident back disappear into the kitchen. Moments later, the sound of running water began. Li Yue looked out the window and smiled at the camera.
The cameraman froze, then slowly zoomed in.
Just then, a loud “Clang!” came from the room behind the wall. In the frame, the person with the curled lips looked up, dark eyes shimmering under long lashes. Li Yue smirked, a very subtle arch of her eyebrow.
Cameraman: Gulp. That expression…
Li Yue calmly walked into the kitchen.
Luo Mingzi was frantically fishing for a bowl in a sink full of bubbles, muttering to herself, “It’s fine, you’re a wooden bowl, wooden bowls don’t break!”
Li Yue asked in a low voice, “Why does it have to be a wooden bowl?”
“Ah!” Luo Mingzi jumped, her face turning red. “Because wooden bowls are practical!”
Li Yue shrugged and leaned against the cabinet next to the sink, watching Luo Mingzi keep her head down as she “bathed” the wooden bowls with extreme focus. Because she was so serious, she scrubbed for ten whole minutes!
Li Yue watched for ten minutes.
When the bowls which looked like they had been scrubbed raw were finally placed back in the cupboard, even the cameraman let out a sigh of relief.
“There! I told you I could do it!” Luo Mingzi said with a hint of pride. She took off her gloves, glanced at her clothes, and pouted. “I’ve broken out in a sweat again. I want to take another shower. Oh, right!”
She remembered something and turned to Li Yue. Her lips moved, and her voice suddenly dropped. “I forgot to tell you, the guest room you picked doesn’t have a bathroom. If you want to shower… do you want to come to my room?”
“Together?”
