Chapter 6: Exercising Restraint
Inside the shooting range.
Su Chengwen held a popsicle in his hand as he supervised his subordinates’ target practice. He paced back and forth in a carefree manner; whenever he saw someone miss the target, he’d deliver a couple of swift kicks. Just as he was about to open his mouth to scold them, the phone in his pocket suddenly vibrated.
—A call from the security room.
“Uncle Wen, what’s up?” Su Chengwen bit into his popsicle and walked outside. Uncle Wen’s roar echoed through the phone.
“Hey, hey, hey! Let go! Let go of it!”
When Su Chengwen arrived at the scene, he was quite shocked…
With his face flushed red from the heat, Chen Ji was holding one of the monitoring room’s display screens and gnawing on it.
The screen had gone black and a hole had been chewed into it. Uncle Wen was clutching half of the monitor, wrestling with Chen Ji for possession. Chen Ji released his teeth from the screen long enough to hiss fiercely at Uncle Wen, then went right back to biting it.
Su Chengwen: “……?”
He slapped a palm against his forehead.
Hearing the commotion, Uncle Wen turned and saw Su Chengwen. He was instantly moved to tears, looking as though he wanted to serve tea and water to welcome him, if only Su Chengwen would hurry up and take this ‘Great Buddha’ away.
Su Chengwen stepped into the security room.
Chen Ji immediately let go, acting as if nothing had happened, and awkwardly scratched his hair.
Uncle Wen promptly pulled the damaged monitor into his embrace, clutching the screen and its trailing wires warily as he backed away two steps.
It wasn’t until Su Chengwen asked that he found out Uncle Wen had poured Chen Ji a cup of hot water that was nearly 100 degrees Celsius. After drinking it, Chen Ji had ended up like this…
Turned bright red all over.
In his blurred memories, Chen Ji had looked like this last night too, while he was crawling across the bed trying to escape…
“Hey! This monitor…”
“Go to the finance department; deduct it from my salary.”
Su Chengwen took Chen Ji to the staff dormitory building.
The dormitory had a large public bathroom with individual stalls and doors. He led Chen Ji into one of them.
As soon as they entered, Chen Ji covered his backside.
“……It’s not like that, I didn’t mean it that way!”
Did he look like someone who went into heat just anywhere?
Su Chengwen tried to explain, but Chen Ji gave no reaction, so Su Chengwen just took action directly.
“Mmph!”
Chen Ji struggled fiercely. People could come in here at any moment; this kind of scuffling and the sounds they were making would inevitably lead to misunderstandings. Su Chengwen simply covered his mouth. Chen Ji bit him hard.
Su Chengwen ignored it.
He hung the dry clothes on the rack. Out of the corner of his eye, he caught sight of the marks on Chen Ji’s body. He coughed twice awkwardly and pulled the man under the shower, turning the nozzle to the cold side.
The water poured over Chen Ji from head to toe.
His reddened skin gradually returned to its fair state.
Under the stream of water, Chen Ji’s feet gradually transformed into a white fish tail.
Su Chengwen went to his office drawer to fetch a disposable towel. When he returned to the shower stall, Chen Ji’s tail was propping him up as his hands gripped the top of the door, his small head peeking out to look around.
Su Chengwen handed him the towel.
Chen Ji moved to take it with his mouth. “a~”
“You can’t eat it.”
“en?” Chen Ji looked confused.
Su Chengwen helplessly pulled open the shower door and stepped inside to wipe the water droplets off Chen Ji.
Once again, Su Chengwen caught a glimpse of the Pearl of the Sea by accident.
Su Chengwen remained skeptical about the supposedly breathtaking power of the Pearl.
Could such power really be related to this pearl? If it was, why hadn’t Chen Ji used that power to kill him…
Su Chengwen’s gaze was intense. Chen Ji raised the tip of his tail and flicked it in front of Su Chengwen.
“ang?”
Su Chengwen snapped out of it and quickly wiped the moisture from the scales. The white fish tail gradually transformed back into legs.
Leaving the shower, Su Chengwen pulled the man over to the hairdryer to dry his hair. As his fingertips brushed against Chen Ji’s skin, Su Chengwen felt his entire body heating up.
From his vantage point, Chen Ji’s head was tilted to the side, exposing his slender neck.
The hickeys faintly visible beneath the shirt kept bringing back memories of last night. It felt as if an nameless heat in the air was crawling inside Su Chengwen’s clothes.
It was itchy, tingling, and numbing.
An indescribable restlessness tore at his heart.
After finishing with the hair, Su Chengwen checked the time and took him to the cafeteria for a meal. During the afternoon physical training on the field, Chen Ji held the small cookies and milk Su Chengwen had given him, squatting in Su Chengwen’s shadow to watch ants move their nest.
At dusk, a black car with “Tongjiang City Biological Research Institute” printed on it stopped at the entrance of the MHS Command Bureau.
A man in a white lab coat stepped out. He wore a work badge on his chest: Tongjiang City Biological Research Institute — Han Lixin.
While Su Chengwen was leading the team in training, someone from the internal affairs department called him to the office, saying that someone from the Biological Research Institute had arrived with quite an entourage, carrying documents.
Su Chengwen returned to the office with one hand in his pocket.
He left Chen Ji on the training field.
When Su Chengwen entered the office, Han Lixin was sitting on the leather sofa. A cup of steaming tea sat before him, fogging up his glasses and making it hard to read the emotions in his eyes.
“Commander Su.”
Han Lixin extended his hand toward Su Chengwen. “I am Han Lixin, Deputy Director of the Biological Research Institute. I’ll be promoted to Director very soon.”
“Congratulations, congratulations.” Su Chengwen asked knowingly, “Director-to-be, you’re here for…?”
“To deliver experimental documents.”
Han Lixin glanced at the files on the table and gave a fake smile. “The Commander might not understand these things very well, but it doesn’t matter; I’ve left annotations.”
“Oh~ thanks a lot.”
“…………?” And that was it?
In the quiet seconds that followed, Han Lixin’s expression grew increasingly ugly.
Su Chengwen picked up the documents and glanced at Han Lixin. “Anything else?”
Han Lixin’s brow furrowed as he got to the point: “Where is Chen Ji?”
“Him? He’s… playing.”
“You’re just letting him roam free?!”
Su Chengwen said quite complacently: “He’s very well-behaved; he’s just a bit expensive to raise. I just spent six figures at the aquarium to buy a large-scale ecological fish tank for him.”
“Commander Su.”
A sharp, cold light flashed in Han Lixin’s eyes as they landed on the documents in Su Chengwen’s hand. “How long do you think the MHS Command Bureau can keep him?”
“Until the MHS Command Bureau is disbanded.” Su Chengwen added very seriously, “If no accidents happen, it probably won’t be disbanded.”
“Merman experimental subjects are absolutely not human. They will go on rampages, they will hurt people, they will even kill. They have been locked in tanks and researched for over a decade; they are far more cold-blooded than you imagine. You are a commander; you must stand on the side of humanity.”
There was a warning tone in Han Lixin’s words.
“Don’t be so serious.” Su Chengwen looked at Han Lixin with a solemn expression. “When I was taking the MHS Command Bureau entrance exam, I had a small injury and underwent surgery. I came to the exam before the anesthesia had even worn off. Do you know what score I got?”
“I don’t know.” Nor did he want to.
“95 points. I only prepared for three months. Impressive, right?”
“Commander Su, I…” I hope you remain rational forever.
“No need to over-admire me. I’m not gay, seriously. My family has a tiny bit of wealth that needs inheriting.”
Han Lixin gritted his teeth, his face flushed with anger as he left.
“Deputy Director Han? You’re leaving in such a hurry? I’ll find someone to see you out! Director Han~”
Su Chengwen called out from behind, but his feet didn’t move an inch.
Han Lixin walked even faster.
As a human commander, Su Chengwen’s duty required him to stand completely on the side of humanity. Yet Su Chengwen’s current attitude toward the experimental subject was far too indulgent…
This was not a good thing.
Inside the office, Su Chengwen looked down at the tooth marks on his finger, his gaze darkening slightly.
Chen Ji had bitten him; it was bleeding and bruised.
He really is quite fierce…
After coming out of the office, Su Chengwen drove Chen Ji home. Chen Ji sat in the passenger seat and buckled his own seatbelt.
Su Chengwen raised an eyebrow in satisfaction.
So smart?
Just as he was about to drive off, the Bureau Chief came over with his thermos.
The Chief tapped on the car window. After it rolled down, the Chief’s sharp, warning gaze was revealed.
“Always remember: exercise restraint! Control your… belongings!”
“……”
“He isn’t well-educated; don’t go tricking him into bed.”
