Chapter 5: Loathing Mating
“Among the merman race, the more beautiful they are, the stronger their reproductive capacity. Chen Ji resisted violently, using the threat of severing his own tail to force Lin Feng to begrudgingly give up and shift the breeding goals to other experimental subjects.”
“Later, small mermen were indeed cultivated, but the ones produced tended more toward being human—or more accurately, they were deformed creatures.”
“The little mermen didn’t last three days before dying, yet this breeding experiment never stopped. Perhaps only a merman bred by Chen Ji would be different; after all, he possesses a true Pearl of the Sea…”
By the time Su Chengwen heard the rest, he was already distracted.
Chen Ji loathed mating and had caused severe injuries because of it.
Then what happened last night? And why was he so obedient and well-behaved this morning?
Chen Ji, toward him…
While Su Chengwen’s thoughts were drifting, the Chief tapped the table to snap him back to his senses. “Dr. Thal has already set off for the Strait of Gibraltar.”
“What is he going there for?”
“To negotiate.”
“Negotiate?”
“To negotiate with the merman race on behalf of humanity.” This was the cause started by Dr. Thal, so he should be the one to bear the consequences.
The Chief watched Su Chengwen as he spoke of Chen Ji’s deeper origins.
Chen Ji’s existence was a secret.
The outside world knew Lin Feng had a young and promising entrepreneur for a son, but no one knew Lin Feng also had a twenty-four-year-old illegitimate son locked in a basement.
This illegitimate son was born from Lin Feng’s affair with a researcher.
Dr. Thal was Lin Feng’s teacher and the first person to discover mermen; the matter of the merman race was a top-tier secret.
Dr. Thal had unintentionally revealed the existence of mermen to Lin Feng. Upon learning this, Lin Feng embarked on solo marine biology research, sailing for five years.
Chen Ji was born at sea.
Lin Feng had crossed the Strait of Gibraltar many times. Once, they encountered a tsunami; the sea was turbulent, and a storm-like vortex caused the ship to lose its course…
Everyone lost consciousness…
This was twenty years ago. In the end, the only ones to leave that sea alive were Lin Feng, four-year-old Chen Ji, and the merman locked beneath the cabin.
No one knew what had happened.
Four-year-old Chen Ji became an experimental subject from that point on.
After leaving the office, Su Chengwen called a nearby aquarium and purchased a large-scale ecological tank at a high price, having it delivered to the villa.
Just as he hung up and pushed open his office door, a white blurry shadow flew toward him. Su Chengwen caught it with quick reflexes.
It was… a book.
Inside the office, Chen Ji was holding a book in his mouth while throwing another book he had snatched with his right hand at Mo Weiqun. With a “smack,” it hit Mo Weiqun precisely in the face. Mo Weiqun clutched his face and screamed in pain.
“Are you two trying to tear my office apart?” Su Chengwen flipped through the book as he walked in.
Mo Weiqun immediately hid behind Su Chengwen. “Brother Wen! Murder! Sister-in-law is murdering me!”
Chen Ji, the accused, spat out the book in his mouth and kicked it into a corner, where half of the book’s corner was visible. Chen Ji frowned, walked over, and hid the book properly in front of the two men.
Immediately after, he put his hands on his hips and gave Su Chengwen half a glance, his expression arrogant.
Mo Weiqun: “???”
Su Chengwen raised an eyebrow.
…Well, he has some brains, but not many.
Mo Weiqun pointed to his injured face. “Brother Wen, look! He just hit me!”
Su Chengwen opened his mouth, about to scold him.
Chen Ji puffed out his cheeks, his limbs stiff, and moved toward Su Chengwen step-by-step with pauses in between.
And then…
Two fingers pinched Su Chengwen’s collar, pulling the man toward him. He stood on his tiptoes and patted Su Chengwen’s head.
This one, not fierce.
Turning his head, Chen Ji gave Mo Weiqun a slap.
Mo Weiqun took the slap squarely.
Mo Weiqun: “…………”
Huh????
He clutched his face in a daze, looking at the self-righteous Chen Ji. It took a good while before Mo Weiqun reacted, looking at Su Chengwen with a questioning, suspicious gaze.
“Brother Wen, did he just punch me?”
Su Chengwen, who was still immersed in the sensation of having his head patted by a dummy fish, snapped out of it. He let out a soft “hiss” and, looking at the incredibly confident Chen Ji, nodded slowly with uncertainty.
Su Chengwen used his index finger to tilt Chen Ji’s chin back up.
“What is with you?”
Chen Ji sniffed Su Chengwen’s finger. There was a scent. He turned his head away and let out a “Hmph~” from his nose.
Chen Ji wanted to slap his fish tail against the floor to express his anger.
He looked down—no tail…
He pursed his lips in frustration, scratched his backside, and shook one leg to express his unhappiness.
Su Chengwen was amused and rubbed Chen Ji’s head.
“Quite the little ‘social’ fish~”
Mo Weiqun looked at Chen Ji and then at Su Chengwen, his eyes widening like copper bells.
Didn’t Brother Wen love and spoil him the most?
At a time like this, shouldn’t Brother Wen be helping him get justice?
What was this supposed to be?
Really a sister-in-law?
Even if it’s a sister-in-law, she still has to get in line behind him!
“Brother Wen…!”
Before he could finish, Su Chengwen threw an arm around Mo Weiqun’s shoulder and forcibly steered him out of the office like they were the best of buds.
Holding the doorknob, just as Su Chengwen was about to close the door, he saw Chen Ji baring his teeth fiercely at Mo Weiqun.
After being caught by Su Chengwen, Chen Ji immediately turned his head and turned his back to them.
Su Chengwen closed the office door with a smile and, through the door, very seriously told Mo Weiqun about Chen Ji’s tragic past.
Mo Weiqun had taken leave yesterday and hadn’t participated in the mission, so he knew nothing about the merman. Due to confidentiality clauses, the tragic past Su Chengwen described was purely made up.
Mo Weiqun’s face instantly stopped hurting.
He very carefully pulled a boiled egg from his pocket and handed it to Su Chengwen, saying with immense solemnity: “Brother Wen, you must give this to sister-in-law for me!”
“Eh~ sure.”
Su Chengwen answered out of habit.
It wasn’t until he reached the office door that Su Chengwen realized something was wrong.
“Wait… what sister-in-law?”
Su Chengwen whipped his head around, but Mo Weiqun was already gone. He twisted the door open and entered the office, only to lock eyes with Chen Ji, who was gnawing on his leather sofa…
Chen Ji retracted his teeth, wiped the marks on the sofa, and looked away, not daring to look at Su Chengwen.
Su Chengwen cracked the egg open, walked over, and placed the smooth, peeled egg into Chen Ji’s palm for him to eat.
Chen Ji opened his mouth wide and leaned in to eat it in one bite.
His hair brushed against Su Chengwen’s palm, feeling tingly and soft.
Looking at Chen Ji’s puffed-out cheeks, Su Chengwen twisted open a bottle of water and handed it over, then casually tossed the document into the safe and locked it.
Chen Ji “glug-glugged” the water, finishing the entire bottle. He tipped it forcefully—not a drop left. Su Chengwen handed him another bottle and took Chen Ji to familiarize him with the Command Bureau.
The office area, the training grounds, the gym, the cafeteria, the training rooms…
In less than half a day, the entire Command Bureau knew that the Chief had found a male assistant for Su Chengwen.
This assistant was wild.
He wore a collar to work.
He had long silver hair.
He couldn’t speak well and walked strangely, like a disabled person.
After Su Chengwen finished showing him around and completed the information entry, he took off his own work badge and hung it around Chen Ji’s neck.
He pushed open the door to the security room with his knee and pressed the person down into a chair to sit, his movements smooth and practiced.
“The Bureau pays you three thousand a month. You have to work; you can’t get it for nothing. Watch the door here and don’t wander off, understand?”
“ang?”
Chen Ji didn’t understand, but he nodded.
Uncle Wen, the security guard in the monitoring area: “Trying to steal my job?”
Su Chengwen: “Uncle Wen, let him sit here with you for a bit.”
“No—”
“Got it, Uncle Wen~ Please get him some water to drink!”
Su Chengwen turned and left, shutting Uncle Wen’s refusal behind the door, leaving Uncle Wen and Chen Ji staring at each other.
Uncle Wen paced in place, then got a cup of water and handed it to Chen Ji, his gaze somewhat sympathetic: “You… a monthly salary of three thousand yuan?”
Chen Ji took the water, which was over ninety degrees, and downed it in one “glug-glug” gulp.
The next second, Chen Ji’s skin instantly turned bright red.
He had turned into a boiled fish!
Security Uncle Wen: “Holy fck!!!” Is he about to mutate?
