Chapter 3: Special Experimental Subject
Bureau Chief’s Office.
Su Chengwen practically kicked the door open as he entered. He deposited Chen Ji right onto the office desk. “Chief, I heard you’re the one who wrote the recommendation letter for me to raise a fish?”
The Bureau Chief had weathered too many great storms; he very calmly blew on the steam rising from his teacup. “Listen to me…”
Su Chengwen pulled over a chair and crossed his legs, sitting opposite the Chief with an air of leisurely self-possession, waiting for a perfectly reasonable explanation that could convince him.
Su Chengwen was the legendary “Crown Prince” of the Su family in the capital—the type who would have to inherit a massive family empire if he didn’t work hard. To escape the burden of vast wealth, he had traveled thousands of miles to Tongjiang City and become a commander for the MHS.
Chen Ji watched Su Chengwen’s strong, powerful legs, bit his finger, and hopped down from the desk.
He sat his backside right onto Su Chengwen’s lap.
Su Chengwen’s pupils suddenly dilated. He tried to push the person off his lap, but Chen Ji wouldn’t leave; instead, he spread his arms and slumped directly against Su Chengwen’s chest.
Su Chengwen: “…………”
The Bureau Chief said with a smile, “I see he quite likes you.”
“Unilateral liking is called sexual harassment. I can detain him.”
Su Chengwen pulled the person out of his embrace.
Only then did the Chief realize that Chen Ji’s fish tail had turned into legs. “His heat is over?”
Su Chengwen’s sharp brows furrowed tight. “Yeah.”
Experimental research data indicated that after a merman’s heat ends, their tail turns into a pair of legs upon leaving the water.
The Chief stood up. “Come out with me for a bit.”
“Where to?”
“The Biological Research Institute.”
Su Chengwen looked at the Chief with confusion. “Chief, what are we going to the institute for?”
“Didn’t you want a reason?”
“…” Su Chengwen glanced sideways at Chen Ji. “What about him?”
“Let him stay here. He won’t want to go to the Biological Research Institute.” That was a place Chen Ji loathed.
Su Chengwen didn’t say anything. He pulled a pack of Wang Wang Small Steamed Buns from his pocket, opened it, and stuffed it into Chen Ji’s hand.
While Chen Ji was busy counting them to eat, Su Chengwen took the opportunity to handcuff one of his hands to the chair. Chen Ji puffed out his cheeks, just about to fly into a rage!
Su Chengwen patted his head. “Stay here and be good.”
Chen Ji: “en~”
Biological Research Institute.
Carrying Professor Thal’s handwritten note, the Bureau Chief entered the experimental base on the B1 level.
A week ago, this place had been a parking lot; later, it was converted into an experimental base.
This was because Dr. Lin Feng’s unauthorized research on mermen using humans had been discovered.
Besides Chen Ji, there were a total of 27 experimental subjects.
Chen Ji was the first, which is why he was Subject 01.
As the hatch opened, a nauseating smell rushed at them. Within this scent was a mixture of dampness and blood.
Just smelling it made one’s nose feel a stinging pain.
Before Su Chengwen could cover his nose, the scene that met his eyes made him knit his brows tightly. Inside the tunnel-like base stood individual glass tubes.
Inside the glass tubes were mermen!
Two whole rows of mermen!
“How can this be…” Su Chengwen had only received the mission to go to the villa basement, bring the merman back to the institute, and keep it as confidential as possible.
Aside from knowing Chen Ji’s basic information and the collar monitor, he knew nothing else.
He had thought Chen Ji was the only experimental subject…
“When Lin Feng was taken away, a remote control was found on him—likely for that bomb last night. He had an experimental base in the suburbs; Chen Ji was the last experimental subject identified through interrogation. He is very special…” The Chief walked toward the far end of the facility.
“Special how?”
“Chen Ji is the only experimental subject who possesses a Pearl of the Sea.” The Chief reached the deepest part of the tunnel and entered a password to open the final door.
The hatch opened.
Inside, Su Chengwen saw a circular experimental table and a transparent cryogenic tank in the center.
Su Chengwen walked over. Inside, he saw a silver-haired merman.
On the white fish tail, not a single scale could be seen, let alone its original appearance.
Despite not being able to see its form clearly, this strange corpse—which had never appeared before the public eye, still left Su Chengwen feeling incredulous.
This was the mysterious species from the Strait of Gibraltar, a true—merman!
A merman that had been dissected alive.
“What use does the Pearl of the Sea have?” Su Chengwen retracted his gaze to look at the Chief.
“Dead-leaf butterflies, chameleons… they evolved into their current forms to survive in the natural world. No living creature on Earth can leave nature; more accurately, they are dependent on nature.”
“The power of nature is not something human strength can shake. But the merman race is an exception. They complement nature and can even mobilize the power of the ocean… perhaps such power is related to the Pearl of the Sea.”
The Chief, holding his thermos, looked at Su Chengwen. “Do you think Chen Ji is a human, or a merman?”
“Human.” Su Chengwen said without hesitation.
The Chief pointed at the sleeping mermen inside the glass tubes outside the hatch. “In here, there are no humans.”
This was why the Chief had chosen Su Chengwen, and why Professor Thal had chosen Su Chengwen.
In the eyes of humanity, Chen Ji could no longer be considered entirely human.
He could become a sacrifice for profit, a consecrated offering.
Just like his name.
Chen Ji—the “Ji” from ‘sacrifice’.
After leaving the institute, Su Chengwen’s expression was not pleasant. “You know I’m someone who fears trouble.”
To sleep in, Su Chengwen didn’t go home for years, renting a place outside. The rental was cleaned by housekeeping at scheduled times, and he even hired a chef at a high salary to be on standby at all times…
In life, Su Chengwen was a complete hands-off manager.
“Then let him choose.”
In the Bureau Chief’s office.
The Chief summoned the subordinates who had seen the merman into the office. Adhering to democratic principles, they stood in a line in front of Chen Ji.
Looking at the trashed office and the broken specialized handcuffs in Chen Ji’s hand, the subordinates’ mouths twitched as they realized something was wrong.
“Chief, this fish goes into heat… my cousin just came back to the country to visit me for a few days, and he likes men. This fish staying with me is dangerous! It won’t do!”
“Chief, my wife just got pregnant… she can’t be startled.”
“Chief, my eldest uncle’s neighbor’s son’s cousin is staying at my house recently. You know my place is small, it’s not convenient…”
“…………”
Finally, everyone’s gaze fell simultaneously on Su Chengwen.
Su Chengwen shrugged. “What are you looking at me for? Democracy! Democracy!”
Before coming, Su Chengwen—the ‘Five-Good Youth’ who followed traditional virtues, had already used five packs of imported cookies to bribe Chen Ji.
He had told Chen Ji that when people stood in a row later, he wasn’t allowed to stand in front of him.
Chen Ji’s gaze wandered around…
Finally, he walked behind Su Chengwen.
He tugged on Su Chengwen’s black trench coat, opened his mouth wide, and pointed at it. “Ah~”
Su Chengwen slapped his palm against his forehead and slid it down his face.
This fish fcking knows how to play word games…
The Chief stood on his tiptoes slightly and patted Su Chengwen’s shoulder. “See? I told you he quite likes you.”
The other subordinates nearby instantly breathed a sigh of relief, praising Su Chengwen’s heroic act.
Chen Ji tilted his head, staring at Su Chengwen’s coat pocket. He reached out and tentatively patted it…
Nothing there.
Chen Ji’s anger weighed down his brows. With a face full of unhappiness, he turned his head and gave a cold huff, his chin held high.
Su Chengwen: “…………”
The subordinates, being very discerning, scrambled away, closing the door behind them.
Su Chengwen resigned himself to his fate. Sticking one hand in his pocket, he helplessly grabbed the little dummy fish’s wrist to lead him out.
“Wait a moment.” The Chief handed a document to Su Chengwen.
“What’s this?”
“An agreement for a designated guardian. The MHS Command Bureau is the third party; from now on, he belongs to the MHS Command Bureau. The Bureau will pay him 3,000 yuan a month to be your assistant. Take him to do an information entry today.”
“Fine.”
Su Chengwen flipped open the agreement and saw Lin Feng’s signature on it.
“The results of Lin Feng’s trial are out. He’s been sentenced to life imprisonment and will be transferred to a prison by the end of the month, though I don’t know where yet.” The Chief looked at Chen Ji. “Ask him if he wants to go see him.”
“If the high-temperature bomb had exploded, the entire villa would have turned to ash. When Lin Feng was captured, he had time to press that remote to destroy the evidence. Perhaps it’s because he’s his biological father…” So Lin Feng didn’t kill Chen Ji.
Su Chengwen closed the document and looked at Chen Ji. “We’ll see. It can’t even understand human speech yet.”
“It’s up to you. Someone from the institute will deliver the research data later.”
“Fine.”
Su Chengwen waved the document perfunctorily and left. The Chief called out behind his back with earnest instructions: “Don’t play that “taboo” stuff!”
Su Chengwen’s back stiffened. He stumbled for two steps, turned around, and gave a deep look.
“Chief, I don’t have that kink. Tomorrow I’m going on a blind date; I guarantee I won’t touch him in the future~”
“Get married soon, you’re not getting any younger.”
“Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah…” Su Chengwen dragged Chen Ji out.
“Between superiors and subordinates, mind your social etiquette. Let go of his hand!”
“…………” Su Chengwen let go of Chen Ji’s hand.
After returning to the office, Su Chengwen picked up the document, preparing to look at it carefully. Chen Ji suddenly straddled his lap.
His hand blatantly reached toward Su Chengwen’s belt…
