Chapter 9: The Third Day of Exploring the Protagonist’s Daily Life~
The moment eight o’clock struck, Wen Qingyun, having completed her task, stood up and left decisively, leaving the still-active live stream with a cool, retreating silhouette.
Seeing the formidable Wen Qingyun depart, Han Chi—who had been pretending to be invisible—suddenly perked up and delivered his carefully rehearsed monologue.
“I’ve reflected deeply for a long time. I realized I have no evidence to prove my innocence, and I cannot defend myself much, but I still want to tell everyone one thing.” Han Chi pursed his lips, a theatrical glint of a tear flashing in his eyes. “In the future, when you create, remember to back up your work immediately. Don’t assume everything is foolproof just because you’re surrounded by people you trust.” He let out a long sigh, posing at an angle that—for once—actually looked decent. “You never know which will come first: tomorrow or an accident.” He closed his eyes in a show of feigned melancholy.
“You’re right. Perhaps the ‘accident’ comes first.”
Wen Qingyun’s voice suddenly rang out, making Han Chi jump in his seat.
“If the original creator is watching this broadcast, feel free to contact my manager. I know quite a few cyber-security experts who can recover deleted file backups and cloud content—as long as you haven’t thrown away the storage device.”
Wen Qingyun spoke unhurriedly. Under the watchful eyes of the crowd, she reached out and picked up the entire fruit platter from the table.
“I’m planning to eat some ‘melons’ (gossip) tonight, so I’m prepping some fruit to keep my energy up,” she explained, then smiled at the camera. “My baby fans, remember not to stay up late. Get some sleep. Goodnight~”
After greeting the audience, she turned and left once more, her movements as swift and sharp as before.
【I didn’t want to be obsessed with this woman, but she called me ‘baby’ (v〃〃)】 【Aaaah, no matter when I look at her, my sister is so beautiful! I’m coming to sleep with you! Mwah =3=】 【So Han Chi is basically confirmed guilty now, right? Wen Qingyun is a diva, but she’s the type to do it openly. She never hides it, so there’s no reason for her to lie.】 【Damn it, I actually doubted for a second if Han Chi was framed because of what he said! Men really know how to put on an act! The original creator must have been fooled by that face!】 【He’s not sorry; he just knows he’s finished, so he’s sliding into a kneel! Sisters, remember never to empathize with men!】
Wen Qingyun’s “parting shot” completely pinned Han Chi down, cutting off his path to washing his image through playing the victim. From now on, even if he tried to subtly shade his ex-girlfriend, he would likely face public ridicule.
…
That night, Han Chi, unable to endure the shame, spoke with Yue Xing for a long time. In the end, at the cost of his appearance fee, he packed his bags and fled the scene.
For the production team, as long as Wen Qingyun was there, the traffic and hype remained. Having one more or one less Han Chi didn’t really matter; four guests were enough to film.
Over the next two days—the fourth and fifth—the production team didn’t dare pull any more stunts. Even though the majority of Wen Qingyun’s tasks were completed by Chu Ke, Yue Xing chose to turn a blind eye and handed out the rewards regardless.
On the morning of the sixth day, at 9:00 AM, Yue Xing announced the new rules, a standard segment for the final two days of each season: individual tasks were replaced by a team mission.
“We have prepared 5,000 yuan in seed capital for our four guests to purchase sellable agricultural products from the villagers. You need to complete your procurement by the end of today. Tomorrow at 5:00 AM, you will head down the mountain to sell your goods.”
“The production team will multiply the final total sales by 100 and donate it in the names of our four teachers toward Shishu Village’s infrastructure and targeted poverty alleviation.”
“This is a team effort. We hope you help each other to achieve the final goal and contribute to the construction of this mountain village!”
“To ensure accuracy, Teacher Chu Ke will serve as the supervisor, overseeing the entire sales process.”
Deep in the Mountains was a show that flew the flag of public welfare. No matter what happened in the previous days, the finale had to echo the theme, respond to national calls, and spread “positive energy.”
Wen Qingyun showed no reaction, clapping cooperatively with a flawless smile.
“Teacher Wen, what should we buy to sell?” “Teacher Wen, you handle the money. We don’t have any experience.”
The remaining three guests immediately surrounded her. One was a newcomer criticized for bad acting, another a girl-group leader who had taken the fall for a marketing error, and the third a C-list actress who had been “the other woman” without knowing it. All three had “black material” similar to Wen Qingyun—mostly fabricated or exaggerated.
“Fine. You three just follow my lead,” Wen Qingyun agreed. she didn’t mind having a few obedient subordinates.
Taking the brown envelope from the girl-group leader, Wen Qingyun headed straight for the activity center and pulled up a chair next to Chu Ke.
“Teacher Chu Ke, any suggestions for procurement?”
Chu Ke put down her pen, her gaze flickering toward the cameraman following them. “Standard crops have limited profit margins. I suggest buying some of the village’s specialties.”
“What specialties does the village have?”
“Did you see the vast orchards on the mountainside? They’ve been there for over fifteen years. Because of the ample sunlight, the fruit is sweeter than elsewhere,” Chu Ke said.
Wen Qingyun nodded. “But most of those are orange trees, and it’s not harvest season yet.”
“True. However, past harvests were good, and the villagers have dried quite a bit of orange peel into Chenpi (aged tangerine peel). They are all over three years old; you could buy some of that.” Chu Ke smiled. “Almost every household has dried goods like winter melon or sweet potato. Those are light and easy to carry—perfect for migrant workers to take to their jobs.”
“If you’re not afraid of the trouble, you could also process the crops further. That way, you can sell them at a higher price.”
“Thanks for the advice,” Wen Qingyun nodded. “But I have a question: how do you define ‘total sales’?”
“The total amount of money received from selling the goods is the sales volume,” Chu Ke explained. “I’ll handle the final tally. If you have any doubts about the amount, you can check with me anytime.”
Wen Qingyun: “Since we are temporary residents of the village, can I use the funds provided by the show to buy things from myself?”
Chu Ke thought for a moment. “I take it you want to sell your own belongings at a low price to count as part of the mission’s inventory?”
“Exactly. I want to achieve higher sales,” Wen Qingyun confirmed.
“Hold on, I need to verify the details.” Chu Ke pulled out her phone to contact Yue Xing.
【Uh, the intention to get higher sales is good, but isn’t this ‘being generous at someone else’s expense’? The show is the one putting up the money.】 【How is it generous at someone else’s expense? She’s asking if it’s okay. If the show doesn’t like it, they can just say no.】 【This is for charity anyway! Wen Qingyun is using her own things for public welfare! And the donation is in the names of all four guests; she’s not the only one benefiting.】
After three minutes of debate in the chat, Chu Ke received a reply and unmuted the audio.
“It’s allowed, but the items must be things you brought with you initially, and the final selling price cannot be significantly higher than the market value.”
“Great. Then please introduce me to some villagers with dried goods to sell,” Wen Qingyun smiled at Chu Ke. “It’d be even better if there’s an ‘insider discount’ price.”
Chu Ke naturally didn’t mind and nodded with a smile. “May I ask, Teacher Wen, why you thought of this method to create higher sales? Is it to provide more help to the villagers?”
Clearly, Chu Ke had seen the live comments and was trying to give Wen Qingyun a “moral ladder” to climb. If she just agreed, she would occupy the moral high ground.
Wen Qingyun’s lips curled, and a glint of amusement appeared in her eyes. “I appreciate you thinking so well of me, Teacher Chu Ke. But personally, I just want the production team to bleed a little and actually put their slogans into practice.”
“From my personal perspective, I don’t like donating money indiscriminately. Especially since Shishu Village has people I dislike—people who have even insulted me.”
“The thought of my hard-earned work going toward them makes me uncomfortable,” Wen Qingyun said sincerely. “It’s like finding half a worm in your food. Gross and upsetting.”
Chu Ke froze and quickly spoke up: “Teacher Wen, perhaps you’ve misunderstood. Most of the villagers are very friendly…”
“Yes, but as long as there is even one person I hate, I don’t want to donate indiscriminately.” Wen Qingyun interrupted her. She said exactly what she thought; she saw no need for a facade. She hated certain people in the village and didn’t want anyone to mistakenly believe she was boosting sales out of the goodness of her heart for the locals.
A trace of helplessness flashed in Chu Ke’s eyes. She quickly steered the topic away. “I remember the villagers with dried goods live nearby. I’ll take you there.”
“Sure.” Wen Qingyun rose and followed Chu Ke out.
【Isn’t Wen Qingyun’s thinking too extreme? Just because she hates one person, she dislikes the whole village?】 【Does the person above need an ear exam? She emphasized she’s boosting sales to make the show pay up, not for the villagers! It’s not like she’s intentionally avoiding profit.】 【In the end, her actions still help more villagers. She’s just expressing her personal dislikes.】 【Doesn’t that make her personality even worse? Working hard not to help the poor, but just to make the show bleed? So petty!】 【Get your facts straight. The show targeted her first, so she’s hitting back. Even as a hater, I know she’s the type who can’t stand being wronged and holds a grudge.】 【Fun fact: Wen Qingyun’s annual donations exceed ten million yuan. She has her own charity that connects directly with recipients. She helps hundreds of people every year. She’s better than most people here!】
…
After they had walked a certain distance, the system notification chimed, making Wen Qingyun pause.
【Congratulations Host, mission progress has increased. Current progress: 23%. The protagonist provided 2%.】
Chu Ke provided two percent? What did I do to make her feel “troubled”?
Wen Qingyun’s brow twitched as she looked at Chu Ke’s back. Was it because she publicly expressed her dislike for the villagers, or was it something else?
