Chapter 4: The Second Day of Troubling the Protagonist~
Technology changes lives. Having finished her work in under half an hour, Wen Qingyun felt a strong sense of agreement with that sentiment.
“Hello, please rate my performance for this task.” Wen Qingyun removed the spraying equipment and pulled out the task card the production team had sent over. She handed it to the owner of the pumpkin patch—a woman in her seventies.
“You did a good job, little girl. Very efficient.” The old woman’s smile was kind. Taking the task card, she squinted and scribbled a full score onto it.
“Is this okay?” The old woman handed the card back. The Grade-B faux jade bracelet on her wrist was glaringly obvious, sporting a “Spring with Color” (lavender and green) palette. If it were real, it would be worth nearly eight figures.
Wen Qingyun glanced past the fake jade at the perfect score on the card, a polite smile touching her lips. “Thank you.”
“No need for thanks, no need.” The old lady waved her hand and took a step toward Wen Qingyun, walking alongside her as they headed back.
Out of the traditional virtue of respecting the elderly, Wen Qingyun slowed her pace slightly to prevent the woman from tripping while trying to keep up.
“Little girl, how many more days are you filming here?” After a few steps, the old woman switched to small-talk mode.
Wen Qingyun: “Seven days total. Today is the third day, so four more to go.”
“Four more days… then why don’t you come to my house for dinner the day after tomorrow? My grandson is coming back. He works in the city and only comes home once a month. It’s fate that you’re here at the same time.”
“My grandson has been a top student since he was a kid. He’s honest, hardworking, and filial. Plenty of girls at his workplace like him.”
The old woman’s “map of Yan” was far too short; she exposed her true purpose within seconds. Inviting Wen Qingyun for dinner was a ruse; wanting to set her up with her grandson was the reality.
Wen Qingyun, experiencing this for the first time, replied with a hint of curiosity, “Is that so? How tall is he?”
“Nearly 1.8 meters. A big tall fellow, taller than me,” the woman said, gesturing with her hand.
Wen Qingyun remained unmoved and 100% skeptical.
It is common knowledge that any man over 1.7 meters claims to be “nearly 1.8 meters.” Men who are actually over 1.8 meters are desperate to specify their height to two decimal places; even if they are 180.01cm, they wouldn’t use such a vague description.
Since she hadn’t seen the man, Wen Qingyun didn’t challenge his height yet. She continued, “And what does he do for work?”
“He works for a state-owned enterprise, assisting a director there. The leadership thinks highly of him—they take him to every social banquet.” Hearing Wen Qingyun ask for details, the old woman’s voice grew louder and more confident.
“Really? How old is he? What’s his salary? Does he have a house or a car?” Wen Qingyun fired off the classic “Triple Question” of matchmaking.
“Only twenty-nine. He makes nearly ten thousand a month and is already looking at houses,” the woman answered glibly and fast. “If you two plan on having several children after marriage, I’ll tell him to buy a bigger one.”
“Old lady, do you have some sort of delusional disorder? Do you need a referral to the psychiatric department?”
“What did you say?” The woman didn’t react for a moment.
“If there isn’t something wrong with your brain, how could you think I’d be interested in your grandson? A thirty-year-old man, making a few thousand a month, with no car or house—acting like a ‘grandson’ at home and a literal ‘grandson’ (lackey) at work.”
【Holy crap, I just watched ‘Should You Marry This Man?’ short video yesterday, and today I’m getting a live demonstration from the teacher?】
【Isn’t this a contradiction? This grandma is clearly desperate for him to marry. If girls at work really liked him, wouldn’t he have brought one home by now?】
【Let me translate: ‘Honest and hardworking’ = no outstanding qualities. ‘Girls at work like him’ = he criticizes women at home. ‘Leadership takes him to every banquet’ = highly likely he’s an uncontracted driver. Summary: Red flag! Run!】
【Teacher is here! Accept my bow! I’ve learned so much today!】
The live chat was unusually harmonious. Even Wen Qingyun’s haters didn’t think such a man was worthy of her. Wen Qingyun might have a bad temper, act like a diva, and be lazy, but she was beautiful, rich, and had taste. Even if she hit rock bottom, she wouldn’t sink that low!
“You brat! How dare you speak like that! A girl like you who shows her face in public—it’s already lucky my grandson is willing to have you! And you’re picking and choosing!” The old woman finally understood and instantly flipped. Her “kind” smile turned dark and sinister.
Wen Qingyun said nothing. She simply turned off her body mic and signaled the cameraman to give her space to handle a private matter.
“Pretend to turn it off, but keep recording,” Yue Xing commanded through the cameraman’s headset, his voice shaking with excitement.
He was excited for two reasons: he could take a petty revenge on Wen Qingyun, and the traffic from this would be astronomical. Gender and marriage debates always caused a storm on social media, especially with Wen Qingyun at the center!
“It is 2024. Women have independent personalities and lives; they don’t need to depend on anyone. If your grandson is unwanted, it means he is an inferior man—a piece of scrap that can’t even provide emotional value to a woman.”
“If you really want to find a home for your grandson, I suggest the recycling station. Scraps might be worth a few cents there.”
Wen Qingyun spoke expressionlessly. Had she not been worried about the woman having a heart attack, her words would have been even more lethal.
“You’re the unwanted scrap! How dare you talk about my grandson like that!” The woman broke. She lunged forward, trying to slap Wen Qingyun.
Wen Qingyun stepped back easily. The woman swung at thin air, lost her balance, and fell heavily onto the concrete.
“An elder who is violent and loses her temper so easily… I imagine the grandson she raised isn’t anything good either. He’ll probably end up in prison for assault eventually. I take back what I said; your grandson isn’t scrap, he’s just trash. No recycling value at all. Burning him would probably just pollute the environment.”
Seeing the woman struggle to get up, a flash of impatience crossed Wen Qingyun’s eyes. “By the way, a reminder: I don’t usually hit old people. But if you try to use your age to bully me, I have enough money to keep you in the ICU for months.”
【Damn, Qingyun is so good at this! Can I borrow her mouth? I want to roast the trashy guys bothering me like that!】
【Uh, we haven’t even seen the guy yet. Isn’t this a bit much? What if he’s actually okay?】
【The person above is identified as male. 80% chance he’s projecting.】
【Bullshit! I’m just being objective!】
【Correction: You’re not projecting; you’re just the same type of non-recyclable trash as that grandson.】
【Isn’t Wen Qingyun being too much? The old lady was just ‘kindly’ introducing her grandson. If you don’t like it, just say no. Why be so cruel?】
【’Kindly’ my ass. This kind of moral kidnapping is the worst. Qingyun only asked a few questions, and the lady was already talking about how many kids they’d have. I only dream about kissing beauties, but this lady dreams of a whole dynasty!】
The majority of the live viewers were women, but about a fifth were men. These men seemed to have a biological instinct to group together for warmth; even if they’d never met the grandson, they defended him like a blood brother. Fortunately, the female audience was larger and clearer-headed, quickly shutting down the trolls.
Wen Qingyun noticed the cameraman’s slight movements and guessed they were still filming. She didn’t care. At most, it just meant more haters. She pulled out her phone, switched her social media comments to “followers only,” and pinned her latest commercial ad. She just wanted to annoy the people coming to harass her while boosting her market value.
She pocketed her phone and looked at the old woman with annoyance. The woman looked like she was about to faint, her breathing labored and exaggerated. The smell of a “scam artist” looking for a payout was in the air.
Wen Qingyun had no intention of entertaining her. She put her sunglasses back on—out of sight, out of mind—and walked away.
Seeing that no one was paying attention to her, the woman’s faked breathlessness began to turn into actual respiratory distress. A body that had been conditioned by seventy years of hardship wasn’t very resilient. Her face turned from flushed to a pale, sickly white.
The cameraman panicked and jogged to catch up with Wen Qingyun. “Teacher Wen, that old lady doesn’t look good. Are you really not going to check on her?”
“What does that have to do with me?” Wen Qingyun didn’t even turn her head.
“But… but if something happens to her, it will affect the show…” the cameraman whined.
“Then you should find the director. Use your headset to contact Yue Xing,” Wen Qingyun said, stopping to look at him through her dark lenses.
“Second, if you’re actually worried, you should go ask her if she’s okay instead of trying to morally kidnap me.” Her voice turned cold. “And finally, if you continue to record me secretly, you’ll be seeing my lawyer in court.”
The cameraman’s face turned as pale as the old woman’s. He stammered, unable to speak, and guiltily shut off the camera.
“What’s wrong? Did something happen?” Chu Ke’s voice rang out from nearby. Moments later, her figure appeared in the reflection of Wen Qingyun’s sunglasses.
“Director Yue said there was some friction here and asked me to help mediate,” Chu Ke explained, panting slightly with flushed cheeks.
It was about eight hundred meters from the activity center to here. Chu Ke had made it in less than four minutes. She clearly exercised often.
“Teacher Chu Ke, over here! This grandma looks like she’s in trouble!” The cameraman felt like he had been granted a divine pardon and immediately led Chu Ke to the old woman.
