- Chapter 3 - Magic? Do Such Grotesque Things Truly Exist in This World?
The motorcycle cruised smoothly along the road. It was around three or four in the morning, and the streets were devoid of both pedestrians and vehicles. The route Wang Chun had directed her toward featured very few buildings.
On the narrow road, the only sounds were the hum of the motorcycle and… Wang Chun’s inner thoughts drifting from the back seat.
Wang Chun’s eyes darted around. Although there were no people, there were still surveillance cameras. She needed to head further west toward the outskirts to find the small paths that bypassed the cameras.
She leaned close to Zhuo Ti’s ear and said, “Drive west. I live in the suburbs.”
The back of Zhuo Ti’s neck was partially exposed, looking fair and slender. As the wind brushed past, the scent of her Alpha pheromones wafted into Wang Chun’s nose, making her swallow instinctively as she fantasized about where to take the first bite.
I’ll go straight for the neck. The blood vessels are thick there. One bite and the blood will spray into my mouth, fast and plenty.
She quickly dismissed the idea. Biting the carotid artery would kill Zhuo Ti too easily. If she actually died, Wang Chun wouldn’t be able to stay clear of the trouble. Too risky.
Maybe the arm.
But figuring out how to bite her without being noticed while successfully obtaining her blood was a difficult puzzle.
Zhuo Ti was no weakling. Wang Chun had seen her pull brawlers apart at the bar several times; her moves were clearly those of someone professionally trained. Currently, Wang Chun’s magic was weak, making it nearly impossible to steal blood from such an Alpha without a sound.
Should I just knock her out?
The motorcycle suddenly jerked to a stop. Wang Chun snapped back to reality. The surrounding buildings had increased in number. While she was daydreaming, Zhuo Ti had driven back toward a more prosperous area.
“Did we take a wrong turn?” Wang Chun asked.
Zhuo Ti turned her head and flipped up her helmet’s visor. Her tone was deathly cold. “Who are you?”
Wang Chun’s heart tightened, but she feigned confusion. “What do you mean?”
Zhuo Ti watched her, her gaze fierce and direct as if she had seen right through her intentions. Wang Chun forced a guilty smile. “I… I’m just an ordinary human.”
Zhuo Ti’s eyes swept over her. The March weather still carried the chill of a late spring cold snap, yet Wang Chun was only wearing a white, off-the-shoulder knee-length dress without a coat. She hadn’t looked cold once during the entire ride.
Human? No one introduces themselves that way.
“Get off,” Zhuo Ti said flatly.
“Huh?” Wang Chun’s voice spiked. “You… you aren’t taking me home?”
“Get off,” Zhuo Ti repeated.
Wang Chun’s heart raced. she lingered on the bike, unwilling to dismount. It had taken over a month of effort to finally get Zhuo Ti alone. This lifesaver was right in front of her; if she missed this, she wouldn’t just lose her chance—she might lose her life.
She looked around. Although this wasn’t a remote area, the late hour meant no witnesses. She decided to go for it. As for the cameras, she’d worry about that later. Survival first!
Hardening her heart, Wang Chun whispered a silent incantation and cast a spell on Zhuo Ti.
Zhuo Ti felt a sudden tightness in her chest. She didn’t understand what Wang Chun meant by “casting a spell,” and she didn’t care to find out. She twisted the throttle to start the bike.
Wang Chun watched the motorcycle roar past her, her eyes widening in shock. She hadn’t expected her magic to be completely useless against Zhuo Ti. The Alpha was moving normally.
After a two-second stun, she quickly cast a spell to stop the motorcycle.
The bike came to an abrupt halt, and Wang Chun appeared in front of her in an instant.
Zhuo Ti’s breathing grew ragged. She twisted the throttle repeatedly, but the bike only emitted a buzzing sound and refused to move.
Wang Chun stood before her and grabbed Zhuo Ti’s shoulders. Zhuo Ti tried to move but found the other woman’s strength immense. She was pinned.
“I’m sorry, Zhuo Ti,” Wang Chun said. “I know you’re a good person, and I don’t want to hurt you. Don’t be afraid, I’m just borrowing your…”
Before she could finish, Wang Chun’s mouth hung open, frozen. She couldn’t speak another word.
A second later, Zhuo Ti’s body felt light again. Her frozen limbs regained mobility, while Wang Chun became the one who couldn’t move. Zhuo Ti surveyed the area; the wide road was empty.
She didn’t know what was happening, but she had no intention of sticking around to investigate. She had no way of dealing with such bizarre, paralyzing dangers, so she decided to flee. Zhuo Ti brushed off Wang Chun’s hands and twisted the throttle again. This time, the bike worked, and she sped away, brushing past Wang Chun.
Two figures floated down from the air. Gongsun Wu moved her fingers slightly, expanding the barrier around herself and Top Scholar Xu to envelop the little demon, while simultaneously undoing the freezing spell on her.
Wang Chun looked at the two people who had appeared out of thin air. She couldn’t sense any scent from them, which told her they were seniors with far superior magic. She plummeted to her knees. “Exalted ones, have mercy!”
Top Scholar Xu tapped her forehead lightly and said, “A Toon Tree demon.”
“Yes,” Wang Chun lowered her head.
“Look up,” Xu said.
Wang Chun raised her head. The man and woman before her were dressed very differently from each other, but both were stunningly beautiful. Especially the woman; her face was so exquisite that few in either the human or demon realms could rival her.
The woman’s gaze was languid, but Wang Chun felt it was no less penetrating than Zhuo Ti’s gaze earlier. She didn’t dare look for long.
“What were you trying to do to her?” the man asked.
“Drink… blood,” Wang Chun whispered.
“Is she a person of Extreme Yin?” Xu asked.
Wang Chun nodded. “Yes, my lord.”
“Have you forgotten the rules of the demon realm?”
“No, no!” Wang Chun shook her head. “I remember! I didn’t hurt her, and I’ve never harmed any human, my lord!”
“You certainly intended to. If we hadn’t stepped in, you would have already harmed her,” Xu pointed out.
Wang Chun looked desperate. “I was just anxious! That human is extremely guarded. I haven’t found an opportunity in over a month. If I don’t get her blood to sustain my life, I won’t survive. I didn’t want to hurt her, my lord, please forgive me… Ah!”
Her legs suddenly transformed into tree roots. Wang Chun’s eyes filled with terror as she saw the beautiful woman withdraw her casting finger.
Without knowing who the woman was, a mere wave of her hand had forced Wang Chun back into her true form.
“No wonder you were anxious,” Top Scholar Xu remarked, looking at her roots. “They’re completely rotten.”
The roots were oozing foul black liquid. Without treatment, she was as good as dead.
Wang Chun kowtowed. “Please, exalted one, save my life!”
Xu looked at Gongsun Wu. She let out a yawn. “Do as you wish.”
He cast a spell on the Toon Tree’s roots, but the rot showed no signs of improvement. He looked up at Gongsun Wu. “Boss, I can’t save her.”
Gongsun Wu’s eyelids drooped slightly. The little tree demon’s eyes were filled with pleas for help.
“Please, have mercy!” The little demon kowtowed to her.
Gongsun Wu crouched down and touched the demon’s forehead, searching her consciousness. In the dark and noisy environment of the bar, most fragments from the past month were of the demon deceiving that human. Gongsun Wu skipped through those and scanned the memories of the last three years. She hadn’t disrupted human order or killed anyone.
Gongsun Wu opened her hand, revealing a small, golden fruit.
“Eat it, quickly,” Top Scholar Xu urged.
Wang Chun hesitated but took the fruit and ate it. In the blink of an eye, the rotten roots visibly restored themselves to their original state. Wang Chun dazed for a moment as her spirit and energy also recovered. Her breathing grew heavy as she looked at the woman.
No demon in this world was this powerful, making a dying demon live with a simple fruit. Unless…
Wang Chun’s eyes sparkled. “My lady, are you…”
“I am nothing,” Gongsun Wu stood up and flicked her long robe. “Let’s go, Osmanthus.”
Top Scholar Xu, now called Osmanthus, had a face full of annoyance but didn’t forget to warn Wang Chun, “Don’t show your face to that human again. You almost exposed yourself tonight.”
The rescued Wang Chun beamed. “Don’t worry, my lord, I will never appear again!”
Xu caught up with Gongsun Wu. “Boss, that human… should we keep observing her?”
“I placed a tracking spell on her,” Gongsun Wu said. “She’s heading west.”
Following the tracking spell west, the air and environment improved. Gongsun Wu took a deep breath, feeling quite refreshed. She had just arrived in A City today, and only this moment brought her any peace.
The motorcycle entered a lush, semi-mountainous area. This was the old villa district of A City, with large hillside estates but few actual buildings.
The bike stopped in front of the last double-row townhouse. She got off, manually opened the large iron gate, and pushed the bike under a rain shed against the courtyard wall.
They watched her cross the courtyard and enter the house.
Gongsun Wu and Top Scholar Xu floated in the air. Xu chuckled. “Well, isn’t this a coincidence?”
Gongsun Wu looked at him sideways. Xu explained, “A City has good air. Last year when I planned to move the company here, I specifically chose a place with a good environment for us to take root. After searching, this area turned out to be the best spot in the city—rich in spiritual energy. But there were no houses left.”
He pointed to the neighboring plot. “Only that empty lot was left. I applied to buy it and build our house. Boss, that’s where we’ll be living from now on.”
As Zhuo Ti opened her door, she felt a sudden force lunge at her. She crouched down to catch the dog running toward her.
Huoyan (Flame) wagged his tail incessantly. ‘You’re back, you’re back!’
“Yes, I’m back,” Zhuo Ti kissed his forehead. “Why aren’t you asleep yet?”
‘Waiting for you to come home.’ Flame tried frantically to climb into her arms.
Zhuo Ti picked him up. “The others are asleep, right?”
‘Asleep. You’re a bit late today.’
“Today… something happened.”
‘What happened? What happened?’
“Nothing.”
Zhuo Ti ruffled his fur for a while, then patted his rear. “Get down now.”
Flame jumped down and circled around her. ‘Do you want me to sleep with you tonight?’
“No, you’ll disturb me in the morning.”
‘Oh, okay.’ Flame sat down and gave her a goofy grin.
“I’m going to my room. Go to sleep, you silly dog.”
She smiled and turned to go upstairs. Sensor lights lined the staircase, lighting up one by one as she ascended. The old wooden stairs emitted a faint creak under her feet, creating a rhythmic sound that accompanied the lights.
The vast third floor was empty and dark. Zhuo Ti walked to the westernmost room at the very end. She pushed the door open; the balcony door was already open, and the crosswind made her shiver.
It was freezing.
Without turning on the light, Zhuo Ti crossed the bedroom and closed the sliding glass balcony door. Outside was pitch black. Away from the city’s hustle, there were no lights here. The darkness enveloped her; in the dead of night, it felt as if she were the only person left in the world.
She reached out her hand, opened it, and then made a fist.
The sensation of being unable to move was still fresh in her memory. It was like… having her pressure points struck. This wasn’t a wuxia novel or a fantasy movie. Blood drinking, magic, did such grotesque things truly exist in this world?
Zhuo Ti didn’t want to believe it, but her encounter tonight made it hard to deny.
Then again, what was impossible? Wasn’t she herself the most grotesque thing among all these strange occurrences?
