Break Up Right After Same-sex Marriage Is Legalized - Chapter 4
I actually fell asleep.
When I woke up, the car had already entered the garage beneath the apartment building. It seemed to have been parked there for quite a while.
Noticing that I was awake, Mr. Wei asked: “Did you sleep well?”
“Mmm.” I felt a bit embarrassed. “I’m sorry for making you drive the whole way.”
“It’s nothing.” He seemed to be in a good mood. “Go home and continue sleeping. Filming was hard work.”
“It was alright. My part wasn’t very heavy.”
“You should have played the male lead.”
He said it just like that.
I suddenly remembered that the movie “Ultimate Ultimatum” was a script that Mr. Wei and I had chosen together.
Ever since I started inserting breaks between two projects, Mr. Wei always liked to look at scripts with me. When picking them out, his favorite things to say were “You should play the male lead in this one,” “The male lead of this script was tailor-made for you”… and so on, too many to count.
It was as if, in his eyes, I was meant to be the protagonist.
But in reality, many roles are not things I can handle at my current stage. When I choose, I look more at whether it’s suitable and whether I can achieve a breakthrough, rather than the billing.
Since I didn’t come from a professional acting background, there are too many things I need to learn. Blindly playing unsuitable roles would only exhaust the audience’s expectations of me.
Hearing him say the same thing now, I joked: “If I keep playing the male lead without any reason and the movies Mr. Wei invests in all become flops, you won’t be able to earn your money back.”
He seemed a bit helpless: “Even though I don’t care about the money, I want even less for you to act in bad films.”
The atmosphere was just right. I thought about it, but I still didn’t ask him what he had been busy with this month.
Mr. Wei is truly a good benefactor.
So, I must be even more careful not to overstep.
Mr. Wei proactively mentioned a few details about his recent situation: “Some things happened at the company during this period. A few troublesome members of the board are making a scene.”
He didn’t say anything beyond that.
He rarely spoke to me about work matters, and I had no standing to ask more.
“It’s been hard on you.” I said. “Get some good sleep at the apartment and rest.”
Mr. Wei asked: “Sleep? Isn’t that what I just said to you?”
I smiled: “A matter of courtesy.”
Mr. Wei parked the car: “Let’s go. Let’s go home.”
“Okay.”
The apartment where we currently live is in a very good location, situated in a bustling area of the city center. It is a large, single-floor flat on the top floor of a high-end apartment building. After I got together with Mr. Wei—or rather, after we established the kept relationship—I moved into this apartment. It has been over two years now.
When I opened the door and entered, the arrangement inside was almost the same as when I last left.
I already had very little luggage, and because I usually need to join film crews, the time I spent living here was even less than the time I spent living in hotels, so there were very few of my belongings kept in the apartment. Mr. Wei also seemed to only come here when I was on vacation. At other times, he spent most of his time at another residence closer to the company.
After all, a golden cage is not a home.
Therefore, even after living here for two years, the apartment was still like a cold model home.
But it was already very good—a house warm in winter and cool in summer that could shield me from wind and rain, with a bed for peaceful sleep. It was better than sleeping on old wooden tables and sofas. It was also better than the time I was a ‘North Drifter’ with no fixed abode, sharing a narrow, dark, and damp basement on the edge of the city.
After we each washed up, we lay down directly.
Mr. Wei leaned over and hugged me.
He must have been a koala in his past life, which is why he always hugs me when he sleeps.
The distance on the bed is the closest distance between us.
Mr. Wei leaned in and sniffed at my neck, bringing a hot, itchy sensation. His needs in this area were very vigorous. In bed, he was far more passionate and forceful than usual, and I often found it difficult to withstand.
I thought we were going to do it and was about to reach out to undo my buttons, but he held me even tighter, making me unable to move.
“Sleep.” he said.
Because my back was to him, I couldn’t see his expression. I just felt drowsy in the scorching body heat and unknowingly fell into a dream.
Last night was a night of good dreams.
The next day, I woke up before dawn.
Mr. Wei’s arm was draped over my waist. As soon as I made a move, he wrapped his arms tighter, even knitting his brows. In order not to wake him, I didn’t move again and just closed my eyes to rest.
The clock on the wall showed 5:16, it was still early.
I am a very light sleeper. Generally, as long as I wake up, no matter how early it is, I won’t go back to sleep. Even if I just get up to use the bathroom, as long as it’s after five o’clock, I will get up to study or work. This habit hasn’t changed since my student days.
Today was a special case. I closed my eyes, thinking that adults don’t get many chances to sleep in, so it was time to be a bit extravagant.
However, I couldn’t sleep.
Around six o’clock, I took advantage of Mr. Wei turning over to try and break free from his embrace, but my wrist was caught by him.
He wasn’t awake, it seemed to be just a subconscious movement.
Mr. Wei’s biological clock is very accurate, he naturally wakes up between 6:30 and 7:00. He looked a bit more tired than usual, so I thought he would sleep a bit longer. I moved carefully, and after a long while, I finally rescued my wrist.
Before he woke up, a qualified lover should have breakfast ready.
I made some Chinese-style breakfast items.
Close to seven o’clock, Mr. Wei woke up.
“Why did you get up so early?” He looked at the dishes on the table, his expression a bit happy yet also a bit helpless. “You even made breakfast. Did you sleep well last night?”
“Very well.”
“What are your plans next?”
I thought about it: “Brother Jian said he wants to wait for a movie that might be up for awards. He told me not to take on new roles before the Lunar New Year. I can participate in variety shows or hone my acting skills.”
“Which one?”
“Director Zhang Ming’s project.”
“That’s quite good.” He said thoughtfully, “Yue Jian knows what he’s doing and will plan the best path for you. If he needs any resources, just have him ask directly.”
I nodded: “Mmm.”
He said again: “Otherwise, in a while, I’ll take you to see Zhang Ming once.”
Mr. Wei has a very wide network. Because he is the boss of Yi Yu and the person in power at Sheng Shi, there are few people in the industry he doesn’t know.
“No need.” I declined his kindness. “Yue Jian said this script is very suitable for me, and for a role that suits me, no one is more capable than I am. I believe Director Zhang will make the right judgment.”
Mr. Wei was stunned for a moment, and then his gaze softened a bit: “Mmm, then we’ll do as you say.”
He seemed to really like my pride and confidence.
Calling it pride was actually just a recognition of my own abilities. I just felt that there was no need to hide things I could do, and for things I couldn’t do, there was nothing shameful about saying it out loud.
“Next, accompany me to a cocktail party.” Mr. Wei said. “Famous directors will be attending; you can get to know them. I will invest in any movie you act in.”
“President Wei is truly wealthy and powerful.”
“For my own person, of course I have to be generous.”
I smiled but said nothing.
If you want to invest, then invest. It won’t make the company lose money anyway.
The cocktail party was three days later.
I spent most of these two days at home, only going out for one press event. Mr. Wei’s work was as busy as ever. When he came back at night, it was already late.
On the first day, I also waited until late at night. When he returned, his expression wasn’t very good, yet he still told me to go to bed early and not to wait for him. If he was too busy, he might not come back.
After that, I left a light on for him.
Mr. Wei seemed very busy lately. On the day of the cocktail party, he still went out early, only informing me before he left that he would come to pick me up.
The person who picked me up was Special Assistant Lyu.
Special Assistant Lyu also brought the clothes Mr. Wei had picked out for me.
Every time I attended a similar occasion, Mr. Wei would pick out the clothes in advance and send them over. The two of us wore the same style, so one could tell at a glance that I was his person.
I received quite a bit of preferential treatment because of this.
After delivering me to the location of the party, Special Assistant Lyu said: “President Wei will probably take another half hour to get here. If you need anything, you can speak with the person in charge of the party.”
Mr. Wei is truly a meticulous person. He can even be so thoughtful toward a lover.
I said: “Okay, thank you.”
In fact, I never thought about looking for the person in charge.
The banquet hall was very large, and the men and women inside were all glamorous and exquisitely dressed, exchanging pleasantries amidst the clinking of glasses. I had already adapted to this kind of occasion. Out of boredom, I found a corner and sipped champagne bit by bit.
“He Zhi?” A voice interrupted my thoughts.
I looked back, and it was Mr. Wei’s friend, Huang Zhengming.
I had met many of Mr. Wei’s friends and business partners, and I was on fairly good terms with some of them.
Huang Zhengming was one of them.
Just like Yue Jian, his initial attitude toward me was average. Although he wouldn’t show anything in front of Mr. Wei, he couldn’t hide his peculiar gaze.
A little plaything naturally wasn’t worth his consideration.
Later, I often encountered him while accompanying Mr. Wei to private dinners. At some point, he became enthusiastic, coming up to chat every time he saw me.
“Mr. Huang is here too?” I exchanged pleasantries with Huang Zhengming.
He immediately showed a displeased expression and joked: “What kind of question is that? I’m standing right here, so of course I’m here. Why are you being so polite with me? It’s too distant.”
I gave a small smile.
“How have you been lately?” he asked.
“I just finished a project.”
“Which one? I’ll go invest!”
“If Mr. Huang is investing because of the director or the script, I won’t stop you. If it’s because of me, I’m afraid it’s not worth it.”
“If I think it’s worth it, then it is!” Huang Zhengming said with a laugh. “Seriously, if you need anything, you can totally come to me. Don’t just wait for Wei Shengli. That guy isn’t necessarily reliable.”
At this moment, a cold voice rang out behind us: “How am I not reliable?”
Huang Zhengming froze, then laughed dryly: “I was joking, just joking! You’re here quite early.”
“It’s not early, the party started half an hour ago.”
I looked down at my watch. Sure enough, the time was exactly half an hour after the start of the party.
“You really come exactly when you say you will.” Huang Zhengming said. “In this regard, you and He Zhi are practically identical. Last time I asked him to call me back because I had something to discuss. He said three minutes, and guess what? He timed it so it wasn’t a second more or a second less!”
He was right.
It might be due to my personality, or perhaps because I used to enjoy scientific research and experiments, I have a strong sense of time and some stubborn, hard-to-change habits. However, the so-called “not a second more or a second less” was probably just a coincidence.
I didn’t expect Huang Zhengming would be bored enough to calculate the seconds it took for me to return a call.
Mr. Wei’s focus didn’t seem to be on the concept of time, but instead he asked Huang Zhengming: “Why did you want He Zhi to call you back?”
Huang Zhengming was stunned: “Just… at the time, I wanted to invest in a movie and asked if he wanted to be the male lead.”
Mr. Wei didn’t speak.
The center of the banquet was still lively, but the air here seemed to have turned cold.
Huang Zhengming panicked: “Hey! Hey, hey, hey! Wei Shengli, why are you being so serious? Even if He Zhi is with you, it doesn’t mean I can’t see his potential and want to invest in him, right? There’s no need to be so possessive, is there? Besides—”
Huang Zhengming glanced at me, and the rest of his words were left unsaid.
But as for the content following that “besides” that he hesitated to speak, I could roughly guess it. It was probably the usual stuff about benefactors and white moonlights.
Mr. Wei seemed to be thinking about something, his brows knitted.
Huang Zhengming: “…No way, you’re really that petty? You even fell into deep thought?”
I shook my head: “Mr. Wei has been a bit busy lately, so he’s quite tired.”
After saying that, I looked up at Mr. Wei. Seeing that he was still spaced out, I reached out and touched his arm.
“Hmm?” He came back to his senses and turned to look at me, his eyes as deep as ever. “What is it?”
“President Huang is afraid you’re angry.”
Huang Zhengming nodded hurriedly, taking a step back in a defensive posture.
I continued to explain: “Actually, Brother Jian mentioned that movie even earlier, but I didn’t film it. You also…”
—You also know, because when we were choosing “Ultimate Ultimatum,” I mentioned it to you.
“It’s fine, I’m not angry.”
He said this, interrupting my further explanation.
I was momentarily speechless.
True, he didn’t need my explanation. I had almost meddled in things that didn’t concern me; it seems I’ve become lax.
This is not good.
Immediately, I smiled at him: “It’s good that you’re not angry.”
