Chapter 8: The First World (8)
After Wu Yao and the controller behind the monsters reached a verbal agreement, his mission interface gained a new feature: the “World Codex.”
“Host activated Codex Fragment 1: Monster”
“Detailed data pending; earn 200 points upon completion”
“Codex Fragment 2: Black Rain”
“Data pending”
“Codex Fragment 3: Monster Controller/Heaven Island Administrator”
“Data pending”
“Codex Fragment 4: Truth Society”
“Data pending”
A folder icon appeared in the blank space of the mission interface. Wu Yao thought for a moment, clicked on Fragment 3, and began filling in information.
“The Mayor of the town is the controller behind the monsters and the administrator of Heaven Island.”
“Source: Dialogue between the hotpot restaurant boss and the police.”
“There is no surveillance on the island. After losing his “goods,” the chubby boss demanded the police ask the Mayor for footage of the basement. The person secretly monitoring the entire island is the monster controller.”
As Wu Yao submitted the information, the Codex updated.
“Fragment 3: Mayor/Monster Controller/Heaven Island Administrator”
“Data Acquisition: 3/5”
Wu Yao closed the Codex casually. It was a decent way to make money, but not much; filling it out whenever it was convenient would do. As long as the mission target’s stats reached 60 and stayed there for 30 consecutive days, he would fulfill the minimum requirements. He could then freely choose whether to stay to grind for more points or take the 150,000-point base reward and move to the next world.
The place was crawling with dangers. Without an apple, Wu Yao couldn’t interact with the “other world” and remained blind to the monsters around him. If he angered the administrator and the target died, he wouldn’t even get the base reward. He couldn’t be greedy; he had to be cautious.
Wu Yao had arrived on Heaven Island that morning and had been moving non-stop since; he’d only just managed to take a shower. He hadn’t eaten yet, and the police station hadn’t offered him a meal. During his fight with the monsters, a monster’s head had been crushed by Wu Yao, and its brain matter had splattered all over his grocery bag. Looking at the fresh vegetables in the kitchen, he felt a wave of nausea.
In the bloody “inner world,” most of the buildings outside the apartment complex were destroyed and uninhabitable, while in the calm “surface world,” residents went about their business as usual. As far as he could tell, the two worlds only affected each other under specific conditions; he was perfectly safe to eat his food. Wu Yao understood the logic, but like most exhausted workers, he was just having a moment of daily social burnout.
The system was still researching the Truth Society and the inner world. It gathered the known information and carefully wrote down a series of hypotheses. In case a mission to uncover the truth of the world popped up later, they would be well-prepared.
Wu… Shiyi.
The black dog rested its chin on its front paws, thinking about its new name. Compared to “General Black,” “Big Black,” or “Black Vanguard,” this name sounded much better. At least the person who named it didn’t treat it as a tool.
After the gambler had cast it aside, the monsters began to harass Wu Shiyi; most of the scars on its body were caused by them. Now that the gambler had abandoned it, the monsters no longer had any reservations. If not for Wu Yao, it would have died at the monsters’ hands today.
Wu Shiyi couldn’t clearly remember what it had dreamt of earlier. It only recalled a fragment: it was leaning against Wu Yao while surrounded by monsters, and a shadow was clinging to Wu Yao’s chest; it had torn the shadow away and thrown it to the ground.
Wu Shiyi couldn’t tell if that scene was a dream or reality, but looking at Wu Yao’s slender back, it decided it must have been a dream. Otherwise, there was no way to explain how he had survived being surrounded by monsters. Besides that, the dream had featured the voices of a group of people.
Wu Shiyi tried to recall the dream scene, but the moment it closed its eyes, Wu Yao’s face appeared in its mind. He was leaning toward it, as if to kiss it. The gambler had thought large dogs were too dirty and rarely got close to Wu Shiyi, but it had seen on the gambler’s phone that many people online loved to kiss and nibble their pets—Wu Yao was likely that type of person. Wu Shiyi didn’t like such contact; it was too intimate and made it uncomfortable.
The fighting dog’s self-healing ability was strong—ordinary wounds healed in a day. The wounds it had now were just from the monsters that morning. Wu Shiyi remained on high alert for a long time, but no monsters appeared. Wu Yao’s home was clean, save for a few eyeballs embedded in the walls that rotated occasionally.
Wu Yao made a stir-fry of fresh vegetables and pork with the ingredients he had. It looked fantastic, just like the “for reference only” pictures on menus. The system, busy roasting a kidney, asked eagerly, “Impressive, learned how to cook before?’
‘The bar for being a villain’s lackey is high. Cooking is a basic requirement.’
Since the black dog had human-like thought processes, it likely didn’t want to lick its meals off the floor. Wu Yao made a separate bowl of minced meat soup and crouched by the bed, feeding Wu Shiyi spoon by spoon. The black dog refused to eat.
Wu Yao thought for a moment and said with a teasing smile, “You’re the patient here, and yet you make me crouch down to feed you? Hurry up and eat so you can recover; you can eat at the table later.”
He held out the spoon, and this time, Wu Shiyi obediently opened its mouth. Wu Yao’s hypothesis was confirmed: the black dog wanted to be treated like a human.
After the meal, Wu Yao pointed to the room. “This is the apartment I rented; it’s not big—just one bedroom and a living room. This is the living room, and the bed you’re lying on is a sofa bed. The door on the right is the bedroom, where I usually sleep. The kitchen is in front; I’m too poor, so the fridge is empty most of the time. The bathroom is over there, no bathtub, just a shower…”
Wu Shiyi was lost in thought, looking distracted. The target’s health was rising quickly, but its spirit was stuck at 6 points. This was Wu Yao’s first time doing a mission like this, and he was at a loss. He tried watching funny videos next to Wu Shiyi and told it made-up stories from his childhood. He went full “extreme dog lover” mode, claiming he wanted to torture every dog meat shop owner to death. The black dog just watched him quietly, its eyes filled with a trace of imperceptible tolerance.
After a long time with no effect, Wu Yao got up and went to the kitchen, seeking a new approach while washing dishes. The system was finished roasting the kidney and was snacking on the skewers: “You worked for so long, you should have plenty of experience.”
‘It’s different. Villains care about profit; they only want qualified tools. They don’t need me to open up to them, just to risk my life for them.’
“What a pity. You looked so cool protecting Wu Shiyi earlier. If it had seen that scene, its spirit stat would have definitely shot up.”
Wu Yao thought that made sense; he could look for a chance to recreate that scene.
According to the mission, the better the target lived, the more he earned. Aside from the health and spirit stats, other factors would surely be considered during settlement. Wu Yao bought some plush dolls and small decorations online to spruce up his small home; a cozy environment might make the black dog feel better.
He just didn’t know whether the black dog usually saw the calm “surface world” or the “inner world” under the black rain. If it was the latter, the decorations were completely meaningless.
At dinner, Wu Shiyi’s condition had improved significantly, and it could already walk on its own. Under Wu Yao’s gaze, the black dog limped into the bathroom, lifted a front paw, and closed the door. Wu Yao walked over and pushed, the door was locked, but he hadn’t seen the black dog actually lock it. The relationship between the two worlds on Heaven Island was strange.
Human Wu Shiyi was nearly 1.9 meters tall, much larger than a dog; how did he even fit himself onto that sofa bed? Based on Wu Shiyi’s reactions, it usually walked upright like a person. Yet, passersby who hadn’t eaten an apple could only see a black dog crawling. That presented a new problem: humans and dogs had different heights—if he tied a leash to the black dog, would the other end of the leash point up or down?
The system didn’t think that far; it only knew that Wu Shiyi could use the toilet by itself, so its long-treasured automatic “poop-scooper” could be saved for later. The frosted glass door opened, and the black dog emerged slowly. Wu Yao glanced inside; the new roll of paper he had placed by the toilet was unwrapped.
Wu Shiyi looked back, following his gaze. From its perspective, besides the toilet paper, there was a decaying human corpse lying next to the toilet. The bathroom was filled with the heavy stench of rot, and swarms of flies covered the sink.
When Wu Yao was telling stories earlier, he mentioned he was an outsider who moved to the island after graduating from college. In his description, Heaven Island was more beautiful than any other place. He was deceived, this place is not normal. However, the long-haired man seemed to be like most people on the island—he couldn’t see the filth. That was a good thing; it didn’t want him to come into contact with its world.
There was no nightlife on Heaven Island; by 5:00 or 6:00 PM, most shops were closed. By 9:00 PM, only bars and 24-hour supermarkets remained open. Wu Yao was tired; he took a shower and prepared for bed.
Officer Xiao Liu called him, trying to pry information out of him—why an ordinary person had such good fighting skills, and whether he had any sordid financial dealings with Officer Qin, who had shielded him. Wu Yao chatted with him while checking the backend data.
“Data Updated”
“Mission Target: Black Dog”
“Name: Wu Shiyi (You respect the dog, the dog likes the new name)”
“Health: 55 (Limited mobility, slight discomfort)”
“Spirit: 6 (Living is okay, dying is also fine)”
“Total Score: 61 (Spirit too low, warning, unstable data)”
Wu Yao didn’t need to worry about the health stat; as long as he kept the target alive, he was fine. The main difficulty of the mission lay in raising the spirit stat. Looking at the big dog on the sofa bed, Wu Yao was uneasy; he forced the dog into the bedroom, intending to hold it while he slept. The world was too dangerous; he wouldn’t feel secure unless his “money” was in his arms.
Before falling asleep, Wu Yao sighed to the system, ‘Thank god the target is male; even if it turns into a human, it’s a man. If it were a woman, I wouldn’t be able to sleep with it.’
“Bro, your path is narrowing.”
‘Bro, you’re the one whose path is way too wide.’
After chatting with the system for a while, Wu Yao’s eyelids grew heavier. He yawned and fell into a deep sleep.
Wu Shiyi had never been this close to a person. Listening to the steady breathing beside its ear, it lay stiffly, sleep far away. Outside the window, the black rain continued to fall, and agonizing wails rose from the streets from time to time.
To Wu Shiyi, Heaven Island at night was just as busy as the day. The noisy surroundings didn’t affect the black dog much, but it lifted its head, looking toward the living room with vigilance.
Several sets of footsteps echoed in the hallway, drawing closer and closer until they stopped in front of the anti-theft door. Right now, there were at least five people standing outside Wu Yao’s door.
