Chapter 24: “Liu Ran, Do You Want to Be My Secretary?”
The coffee was hot almost scalding. As Ming Siyu took it from Liu Ran, she noticed the girl’s palms were slightly flushed from the heat.
The cup bore the logo of the coffee chain downstairs.
Liu Ran explained breathlessly, “I noticed that whenever you go out, Secretary Wen prepares a hot Flat White. But I don’t know how to use the coffee machine or do a hand-pour, so I just went and bought a ready-made one.”
As she spoke, it occurred to her that a big CEO like Ming Siyu probably wouldn’t drink the basic, low-grade “caffeine fuel” of the working class. However, to the currently penniless Liu Ran, those few dozen yuan felt like a fortune. If it went to waste, her heart would ache.
She reached her hand back into the car window. “Director Ming, if you don’t want to drink it, can you give it back to me?”
Ming Siyu had never seen someone offer a gift only to ask for it back less than three seconds later. It was truly an eye-opening experience.
She indeed didn’t drink coffee from commercial chains. Yet, for some reason, she couldn’t find it in her to be angry. Without saying a word, she placed the coffee into the cup holder, asserting her ownership.
Liu Ran scratched her head. “Oh… okay.”
“Why?” Ming Siyu asked suddenly. Normally one to avoid repeating herself, she asked again after the initial word: “Why did you buy me coffee?”
Liu Ran couldn’t answer immediately. The new laptop had no internet connection, and she didn’t know the WiFi password. Bored out of her mind, she had been standing behind the floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking the ground when she saw Ming Siyu’s car pull up. In a flash of inspiration, she remembered the hand-ground coffee Secretary Wen always brought on trips.
Ming Siyu didn’t drink coffee when she was in the office, and Secretary Wen never brought her any then. But in the few times Liu Ran had observed her leaving, Wen always had a cup with her, cradling it carefully not as if she were drinking it herself.
With Ming Siyu leaving the office today, Liu Ran felt as if the “scenery” was missing a final touch. After some thought, she realized it was the bitter-sweet aroma of coffee mixed with milk.
Staying in the office was painfully dull. Liu Ran figured this was a perfect excuse to get some fresh air. Even if Ming Siyu asked why she ran off without permission, she could confidently reply: “To buy you coffee, obviously.”
“…Because the laptop isn’t connected to the internet, and I don’t know the WiFi password.”
So, it was out of boredom.
Ming Siyu found this answer refreshingly honest. She liked that.
“I see. I’ve received the coffee. Go back now. The WiFi password is—”
She paused. Secretary Zhou quickly chimed in: “It’s the initials of Ming Entertainment Group plus two eights. All lowercase.”
Liu Ran thanked Secretary Zhou. But she remained outside the car, refusing to move.
Ming Siyu glanced at her sideways. “Anything else?”
Liu Ran rubbed her hands together, looking a bit embarrassed. “Um, Director Ming… the coffee… I haven’t actually paid for it yet.”
She had overcome her fear of talking to strangers to promise the clerk she would bring the money back within the day.
Ming Siyu felt a phantom throb in her brain. “How much?”
“Forty-eight yuan.”
Ming Siyu sat motionless. She never carried cash, let alone such small change. Meanwhile, Liu Ran stared at her expectantly, her hand almost reaching into Ming Siyu’s face for the money.
Fortunately, Secretary Zhou reacted quickly. She whipped out her wallet and handed a fifty-yuan bill to Liu Ran.
“I’ll find a way to pay you back…” Liu Ran started.
“No need, really!” Secretary Zhou insisted. From the moment Ming Siyu had ordered the driver to wait, Zhou realized this beautiful woman in the hat was no ordinary person to her boss. Besides, the woman had saved her from a major blunder. She stared at Liu Ran, thinking she was tall, young, gorgeous, and had a kind heart. She hoped to see more of her at the company.
Ming Siyu said deeply, “Go to finance for reimbursement later. Drive.”
Once the car had traveled some distance, Ming Siyu took a sip. It indeed tasted like low-quality beans. She put it back in the holder and didn’t take a second sip. She had Secretary Zhou read the highlights of the materials. Without having to read herself, she didn’t feel dizzy when she stepped out of the car.
However, Secretary Zhou’s personal performance left much to be desired. Ming Siyu told her that once Secretary Wen returned, Zhou needed to undergo further training and enroll in a professional secretarial course. Naturally, her performance bonus for the month was gone.
Secretary Zhou looked miserable. But in a stroke of luck, Ming Siyu hadn’t scolded her. She feared her boss’s tongue more than a pay cut.
The negotiations went smoothly. Several wealthy national brands signed on as sponsors. All that remained was to refine the filming process, finalize locations, and sign contracts with the performers. Production would start next month.
It was a rare piece of good news. Back in the car, Ming Siyu picked up the cold Flat White. The foam had long since collapsed, and the mixture of milk and coffee looked like gray sludge—entirely unappetizing. She tried another sip; it was still unpleasant.
On the way back, Ming Siyu reconsidered He Qiange’s suggestion—making Liu Ran her temporary secretary.
The coffee incident proved that Liu Ran wasn’t entirely useless. She had thought of something a professional administrative secretary had missed.
Back at the office, Liu Ran was huddled over the laptop playing a puzzle game. A green pig was bouncing around the screen, and two lollipop wrappers sat nearby. Seeing Ming Siyu return, Liu Ran crumpled the wrappers and stuffed them into her pocket.
“I bought those with the two yuan change from Secretary Zhou’s fifty.”
Ming Siyu reached out and snapped the laptop shut. As the screen went dark, the sound of a green pig exploding signaled a failed level.
“Liu Ran, do you want to be my secretary?”
Liu Ran’s eyes lit up instantly. Before blurting out an agreement, she paused, being cautious for once. “Is there a salary?”
Finding a job had been her lifelong dream. Work could provide income and allow her to live as something other than a “pet.” But if there was no pay, wouldn’t she just be working for free while Ming Siyu toyed with her? She wasn’t that big of a fool.
“You want money? Excluding bonuses, Secretary Wen’s base salary plus performance is 80,000 yuan a month. You can only have a quarter of that.”
