- Chapter 2 - That Little Cat Has No Decorum, Hmph!
After swearing under her breath and having a mini-tantrum at the computer desk for a while, Ying Miaomiao still came down from the desk.
It takes a long time to get up, but only an instant to come down.
But upon seeing the once tidy bed now in disarray, Ying Miaomiao suddenly felt a little guilty.
She tried her best to smooth the sheets with her paws, but to little avail. She simply turned her face away, choosing not to look at the slightly messy bed.
A strong woman doesn’t concern herself with the battlefield behind her; she shall look forward!
Ying Miaomiao jumped off the bed. After pumping herself up with some mental chicken soup, she became lively again. She searched under the computer desk for a long time for the power source but still couldn’t find it. Then, she felt her stomach start to growl again.
Fortunately, Shi Xinyu was worried she might go hungry and had soaked a lot of cat food for her; otherwise, it really wouldn’t have been enough.
But once she was full and satisfied, having lost her direction for effort and with no phone to play with, Ying Miaomiao felt her eyelids drooping.
She instinctively ignored the cat bed and, with sleepy eyes, leaped onto the human bed. Finding a comfortable spot by the pillow, Ying Miaomiao fell into a deep sleep.
A faint, light orchid fragrance lingered around her nose, making her feel exceptionally secure.
Before drifting off, Ying Miaomiao thought to herself that when she recovered her human form, she definitely had to ask Shi Xinyu for the link to the perfume.
In the office.
Shi Xinyu looked at the empty workstation with some concern.
Ying Miaomiao still hadn’t shown up.
Her brow furrowed; today was the second day Ying Miaomiao had been out of contact.
Usually, even if she couldn’t come in, Ying Miaomiao would ask for leave in advance. Going to Ying Miaomiao’s doorstep yesterday was already quite presumptuous of her.
Pulling out her phone, the chat history between her work account and Ying Miaomiao was pitifully short, with only the lonely message, “[I have accepted your friend request, we can start chatting now]” hanging in the chat box.
Shi Xinyu typed and deleted, and then agonized for another ten minutes before finally sending a single line:
[Are you there?]
In the evening.
When Shi Xinyu opened the bedroom door, she saw the little cat she had adopted yesterday soundly asleep by her pillow. Perhaps hearing someone arrive, the little cat’s ears twitched, but it didn’t fully wake up.
Shi Xinyu suddenly recalled the line from Animal World, “Felines are extremely vigilant while sleeping.”
The corners of her lips curved slightly. She quietly moved closer, adjusted the camera, and took a picture of the little cat, subconsciously sending it to a certain person.
But there was no response.
Her slender fingers lingered on the screen for a long time, and the curve on her lips disappeared.
Putting her phone away, she got up and closed the door again.
When Ying Miaomiao woke up, the sky outside was completely dark. Tiny stars studded the night sky, blinking weakly.
The bedroom door was slightly ajar, and the light from the fluorescent lamp spilled through the gap onto a corner of the room.
She stretched, jumped off the bed, and tried to open the door with her paw, but this was a solid wood door, which was a bit too heavy for a cat. After hooking at it for a long time, she only managed to widen the gap slightly.
Helpless, Ying Miaomiao had to use her head to push the door open.
As soon as she squeezed out a path suitable for a cat to pass, Ying Miaomiao darted out. She was about to shake her fur but then noticed Shi Xinyu watching her.
Shi Xinyu had a strong sense of presence when she wasn’t smiling. Ying Miaomiao, who had just graduated, hadn’t completely shed her student mindset, so seeing her direct superior felt like seeing a teacher.
She felt her scalp tighten. Before her brain could react, her body instinctively started the action of licking her fur.
But halfway through the lick, Ying Miaomiao suddenly remembered that she wasn’t a human right now. It should be perfectly normal for a cat to open a door with its head, right?
Indeed, people always do something irreversible when they’re embarrassed.
The little cat sheds a tear.
Shi Xinyu watched the little cat open the door as if no one was there, and then awkwardly groom itself. She finally couldn’t suppress the smile on her lips.
She walked over and scooped the little cat into her arms. The posture was one trained by a vet: one hand supporting the bottom, the other protecting the chest.
The little cat was being handled in her arms, clearly unaccustomed to it. She froze for a moment, followed by a violent struggle and a squealing cat cry that sounded like a pig being slaughtered.
Meow meow meow!!
Women shouldn’t touch each other intimately, put me down!
Unfortunately, Shi Xinyu’s grip was very steady. While comforting the cat, she quickly walked toward the sofa. It was then that Ying Miaomiao noticed a huge cat tree placed against the wall by the sofa.
“Good kitty, does Miaomiao remember what Big Sister promised you yesterday?”
Yesterday? Promised me?
Ying Miaomiao’s ears flushed again. The deceased memory had been resurrected.
“Dong.”
It wasn’t the sound of a heartbeat; it was the sound of Ying Miaomiao collapsing onto the floor.
Ying Miaomiao was suddenly glad she had fur; at least it could cover her shame; otherwise, how embarrassing would that be?
However, the cat tree was already assembled. Shi Xinyu gently placed Ying Miaomiao on the level that was easiest for her to reach and hold.
This level was roughly at Shi Xinyu’s chest height. Ying Miaomiao sat on the cat tree, still feeling somewhat at a loss. She was recalling short videos she had watched: what do cats usually do on a cat tree?
Lie down first? Or wander around a few times?
Shi Xinyu’s gaze was intense. Ying Miaomiao averted her eyes, feeling uneasy in her heart. If she didn’t give some reaction, wouldn’t that hurt the human’s feelings?
Ying Miaomiao symbolically circled a few times. When she looked back, she happened to catch sight of her tail, a black tail with a little white tip, which was currently held high.
After playing superficially for a while, Ying Miaomiao sat still, facing Shi Xinyu.
Shi Xinyu looked at the little cat before her and finally couldn’t resist lifting her up and turning her around.
Ying Miaomiao felt dizzy from the spin but wasn’t uncomfortable. She just felt a bit like young Simba from The Lion King being held up for all the beasts to see.
She subconsciously pictured it, and she felt her fur nearly stand on end.
Meow.
Ying Miaomiao let out a short meow, signaling Shi Xinyu with her eyes to put her down, but Shi Xinyu was clearly a human with no sense of boundaries.
She reluctantly rubbed Ying Miaomiao’s black-and-white kitty head a few times before placing the cat back on the cat tree.
“Miaomiao is so good.”
Ying Miaomiao’s movement of jumping off the cat tree paused, and she nearly stumbled head over heels. Why did Shi Xinyu’s voice sound like it had a variable resistor installed in her throat?
But it sounded rather pleasant, and somewhat familiar.
Ying Miaomiao silently brainwashed herself: I am a little cat, a little cat who isn’t afraid of embarrassment.
Shi Xinyu played with Miaomiao for a while, then went to check the cat food she had soaked in the morning. Seeing the clean bowl, she felt a strange sense of satisfaction.
Soaking a small amount of new cat food in the bowl, she softly called, “Miaomiao.”
Seeing the little cat still amusing herself outside, a serious question suddenly occurred to her.
Although the little cat was found at Ying Miaomiao’s doorstep, she couldn’t continue to use that name. She just didn’t know why she had been so foolish as to choose that name at the time.
Her lips were slightly pursed.
In a moment, she figured out a way.
Ying Miaomiao stood on the sofa, looking blankly at Shi Xinyu holding a few sheets of A4 paper in front of her.
Shi Xinyu still seemed a little reserved. She laid the papers out one by one in front of Ying Miaomiao, holding only the one with ‘Mixed Noodles’ written on it. She said softly, “Do you want to choose a name for yourself?”
‘Steamed Bun ‘, ‘Mantou ‘, ‘Scallion Pancake ‘, ‘Mixed Noodles ‘.
None of them sounded like good names…
Ying Miaomiao looked at Shi Xinyu in disbelief. How could a girl with such thick eyebrows and big eyes choose names like this?
Weren’t these just her breakfast menu from junior and high school?
If they were asking what she wanted to eat, she would be happy to choose, but this was about what she was going to be called!
Ying Miaomiao protested. She looked up, really wanting to raise her two front paws to make an ‘X’ sign, but afraid of being mistaken for a cat demon, she could only helplessly step back two steps and hug her head.
Shi Xinyu was also surprised by her inexplicable behavior. The hand holding the papers slightly froze.
Is this cat crazy?
She tried calling out a few names: “Baozi? Mantou? Banfen (Mixed Noodles)?” Ying Miaomiao showed no reaction, continuing to twist and contort, wishing she could tie herself into a pretzel.
“Miaomiao!”
This sentence was like a magic elixir. The little cat, who had been twisting into a ball just moments ago, instantly returned to her original shape and took a few steps toward Shi Xinyu.
Meow-aow—
It’s good that you understand what I mean.
Shi Xinyu clearly didn’t quite understand. This was her first time owning a cat, and Ying Miaomiao’s antics caused a thin layer of cold sweat to break out on her smooth forehead.
She suddenly recalled the rumors online that cow-print cats were all lunatics.
But…
The little cat’s eyes were moist, her deep blue pupils staring unblinkingly at her, with Shi Xinyu’s reflection visible in them. Only the long fur was slightly messy.
Shi Xinyu felt she really couldn’t bear to blame a sensible little cat. And she was so well-behaved, eating and using the litter box by herself.
Shi Xinyu sighed softly. She squatted down and gently smoothed the cat’s fur as much as possible. “Miaomiao, did you know that you have an older sister with the exact same name as you? She’s very capable.”
As she spoke, she looked intently at Ying Miaomiao and suddenly rubbed her ear.
“You are a little cat with smart fur.”
The ear was soft and cool to the touch, feeling wonderful. Before Shi Xinyu could savor the feeling, the little cat leaped three feet away, looking at her with alert eyes.
Ying Miaomiao felt her ear, which had just returned to normal temperature, start to feel warm again, and also a little tingling…
“Miaomiao, do you like the name Miaomiao?”
Ying Miaomiao felt a little speechless—she was just a cat—but out of politeness, she still symbolically replied: “Meow.”
I like my own name.
Perhaps the interaction between a human and a cat still needed some adjustment. Ying Miaomiao constantly felt uncomfortable everywhere.
She wasn’t used to her short, round paws without fingers, not used to the fluffy, soft, but easily tangled fur all over her body, not used to her overly sensitive sense of smell and hearing, and also not used to Shi Xinyu’s scent.
Shi Xinyu had gone to take a shower and hadn’t closed the room door.
Ying Miaomiao’s excellent hearing allowed her to clearly feel the misty steam lingering around her nose, even inside the room.
Damp, stuffy.
Her sensitive nose allowed her to consistently smell that rich orchid fragrance.
This unfamiliar scent, however, strangely made her feel a little feverish and reassured. A picture of Shi Xinyu’s appearance, especially the way she smiled, bizarrely flashed in her mind.
“Meow!”
Why would she think of Shi Xinyu? This was her boss, a capitalist!
The sound of water stopped shortly after.
Shi Xinyu’s footsteps were soundless. She was wearing a thin bathrobe, her wet long hair casually draped over her shoulders. Round water droplets slowly slid down her neck, wetting a small patch of the pure white silk bathrobe.
She lowered her eyes, searching for Ying Miaomiao’s whereabouts.
Walking slowly toward the depths of the room, a hint of a smile finally appeared on Shi Xinyu’s fair and delicate face. Ying Miaomiao noticed that the faint brown mole on the side of Shi Xinyu’s nose looked even more elusive. She squatted down and rubbed the little cat’s head with her still-damp fingertips.
“Miaomiao waited for Big Sister obediently in the room. I’ll reward you with wet food tomorrow, okay?”
Ying Miaomiao didn’t particularly care about wet food or anything similar, so she just acted like a normal little cat, looking around, and occasionally meowing a few times after Shi Xinyu spoke, barely counting as a response.
She found a kind of grim enjoyment in her situation: Doesn’t this count as a workhorse being subjected to duty no matter where it is?
