- Beautiful Fools Were Born to be Spoiled by Their Husbands
- Chapter 8 - Your Wife is Truly Beautiful
At the construction site.
“It’s a scorcher today! The foreman bought popsicles for everyone. Come grab whatever you want!”
Ruan Zhijuan stepped onto the site, pausing at the entrance to scan the crowd. Everyone was covered in the same layer of grey dust and grime, which one was Zhou Gangxun?
“Zhou Gangxun…”
But as he searched, his focus drifted toward the colorful popsicles in their hands. “Zhou Pineapple Ice, Zhou Mung Bean… Mung bean popsicle, lychee ice, strawberry milk slushie…”
Ruan Zhijuan licked his lips. His eyes were still squinting from trying to read the wrappers when he reached out and stopped a man passing by. “You,” he stammered with a hint of urgent longing, “is… is that one tasty?”
Zhang Xiaolei looked up at the stunning man addressing him. Silky, light-black hair rested softly against his head. His fair skin, flushed pink from the long walk under the sun, was dotted with beads of sweat that made his tender flesh look moist, like a piece of freshly steamed white sugar cake.
His almond-shaped eyes fluttered as if shimmering with water, the outer corners tinged with a faint red and marked by a tiny crimson mole, creating a look that was both innocent and alluring.
The man’s clothes were far too large. A sleeveless white tank top hung on him like a dress, reaching down to his thighs. It was clearly meant for a much taller, broader man.
Indeed, Ruan Zhijuan hadn’t worn any of his own delicate, beautiful clothes. Instead, he was sporting Zhou Gangxun’s shirt and shorts, paired with slippers featuring a little dog pattern.
He had suddenly remembered that Zhou Gangxun refused to do his laundry yesterday, but if Zhou Gangxun’s own clothes got dirty, he’d definitely have to wash them.
Zhang Xiaolei’s gaze drifted to Ruan Zhijuan’s slender, snowy legs. There were several red, swollen mosquito bites, and it looked like he’d been scratching them, leaving clear finger marks behind.
Zhang swallowed hard, finally finding his voice. “Ah, little… little sugar cake, do you want a popsicle?”
As he spoke, he tore open the wrapper and held it out to Ruan Zhijuan. “Here, eat this. This one’s good.”
“You’re the one who asked me to eat it,” Ruan Zhijuan said, tilting his head back with an air of, ‘Since you’re begging me, I’ll show some mercy and take a bite.’ His eyes curved into crescents as he took a mouthful of the offered treat.
Sweet.
Zhang Xiaolei couldn’t take his eyes off Ruan Zhijuan’s pink lips, they looked incredibly soft.
“Are… are you looking for someone?” he asked dazed. With skin as smooth and white as a peeled egg, this man didn’t look like he belonged on a construction site. “I… I work here.”
“Who are you looking for, do I know them?”
In truth, Zhang Xiaolei wouldn’t remember a word he said afterward. All he could recall was how much Ruan Zhijuan seemed to enjoy that popsicle.
“Zhou Gangxun,” Ruan Zhijuan said, his tongue darting out to lick the ice. He lifted his chin proudly. “I’m his wife.”
“Oh, his wife.” Zhang Xiaolei stared blankly, looking like his soul had been snatched away. He nodded mindlessly, his thoughts veering off track. “Wives are good, wives have a bright future.”
It took a few seconds for the realization to click. “You… you keep eating. Wait for me. I’ll… I’ll go get Brother Xun right now, it won’t take a second!”
He kept glancing back at Ruan Zhijuan as he sprinted toward Section B2, where Zhou Gangxun was working.
While still a few meters away, Zhang Xiaolei started hollering at the top of his lungs toward Zhou Gangxun, who was currently mixing soil: “Brother Xun! Your wife is here!!”
“Your big, beautiful wife is here!!”
Most people on the site called Zhou Gangxun “Brother,” not because of his age, but because of the natural pressure his presence exerted, making others feel instinctively subordinate.
Hearing the shout, Zhou Gangxun glanced toward Zhang Xiaolei. “Mm. I’ll go wash my hands.”
Zhang Xiaolei beamed, sighing with a silly grin. “Your… your wife is truly beautiful.”
He said it quietly, though, and he was still a good ten feet away from Zhou Gangxun.
Zhou Gangxun gave his arms a quick rinse to get the dust off, wiped away the excess water, and stepped toward Zhang Xiaolei, gesturing for him to lead the way.
This construction project had a massive budget, so the total footprint was enormous. Without a guide, it was easy to get lost. There were eighteen residential buildings, four entrances, and an underground parking garage.
Ruan Zhijuan was currently at the eastern exit.
Other workers who had heard Zhang Xiaolei’s shouting began to wander over to satisfy their curiosity.
All along the way, the chatter and curious whispers never stopped. “That one up front glowing white is the one, right? Those are Brother Xun’s clothes, aren’t they? Why do they look three sizes too big on him?”
“Why come to the site on such a hot day? Hope he doesn’t get heatstroke.”
“It’s almost noon, maybe he’s here to deliver lunch…”
Zhou Gangxun watched Ruan Zhijuan, who was standing at the entrance eating a popsicle from heaven-knows-where and flapping his sleeveless shirt to create a breeze. He raised an eyebrow. Deliver lunch?
If Ruan Zhijuan was delivering a meal, it was probably a “Pan Jinlian” special—the kind where the food is laced with poison.
A cold smirk played on his lips. According to the “plot,” Ruan Zhijuan was only here because of that wealthy foreman lover of his. He was likely starting his plan to cuckold and eventually dispose of his “old” husband.
“I don’t see any lunch boxes, he’s just eating that popsicle Xiaolei gave him.”
“Xiaolei definitely saw a pretty face and pounced, but damn, he is pretty…”
Hearing this, Zhou Gangxun glanced at the speaker before shifting his gaze to Zhang Xiaolei, who was leading the way with an urgency as if he were going to see his own wife.
His eyes darkened. He reached into his pocket, pulled a cigarette from a pack of cheap soft-shells he’d bought that morning, lit it, and took a deep drag. He exhaled slowly. It seemed there was more than just one “lover” to deal with.
Zhou Gangxun flicked the ash with a practiced motion. Heh. My wife has such a greedy little mouth, can he even handle all this?
“What are you all huddled up here for?” a voice suddenly boomed from nearby, followed by the crunch of leather shoes on gravel.
It was the site foreman, Wang Fucai.
As the man drew closer, a heavy scent of thick powder mixed with cheap cologne wafted off him. He was in his late forties, just over five-foot-seven, and portly with a protruding beer belly—the type who clearly spent too much time in nightclubs and private lounges.
Whether he had those kinds of diseases was unknown, but he definitely had the “big three” (high blood pressure, sugar, and fat).
Zhou Gangxun sneered internally. My wife really isn’t picky, is he? He’ll swallow anything.
Hearing the boss ask, someone immediately chimed in to suck up. “Manager Wang, Brother Xun’s wife is here to see him.”
Wife?
Wang Fucai scanned Ruan Zhijuan from head to toe, a predatory glint in his eyes. He turned to Zhou Gangxun. “Oh, sister-in-law is here? Why didn’t you introduce us?”
Last night, he’d slept with a soft-skinned young man at a club. It was expensive—painfully so—under the guise of the boy needing money for a sick mother and a sister in school.
The kid’s legs had gone weak easily and he cried beautifully, but even that “premium” find didn’t compare to half of Zhou Gangxun’s wife. This one was gorgeous; he looked like his body and legs would give way even easier. If you pushed him hard enough, he’d probably smell like perfume instead of just sweat.
Wang Fucai’s imagination ran wild, and he couldn’t help but chuckle aloud.
Lost in thought, his feet instinctively followed Zhou Gangxun toward Ruan Zhijuan, waiting for the introduction.
Zhou Gangxun ignored him completely. He took a side step, his towering frame totally blocking Wang Fucai’s view. With his long stride, he left the short man behind in just a few steps.
“Hey, Gangxun…” Wang Fucai’s short legs scrambled to keep up, but after just a few paces, he was huffing and puffing, looking like he was about to collapse. “I haven’t made it over there yet… did you forget about me?”
Forget you? In your dreams.
