- Chapter 3 - The Bankrupt Villain and the Malicious Fake Young Master
Such a massive palm, getting hit really hurt. The spot where the centipede had bitten him on his chest was now red from the strike.
Ruan Zhijuan hurriedly checked the bite, muttering under his breath, “Of all the places to bite, why did it have to be here?”
Zhou Gangxun raised his foot and crushed the red centipede with the sole of his shoe. He stared at that patch of Zhijuan’s skin, reminded of the wild cherries he had seen on the mountain trees while driving here. They were just as red.
But those cherries were incredibly bitter to the taste.
Ignoring Zhijuan’s new round of complaints, he grabbed a change of clothes, turned around, and entered the bathroom.
“I need to do laundry, too!” Seeing Gangxun enter the bathroom, Zhijuan dropped everything else. He scrambled to strip off his dirty clothes and underwear. Before he even had his new clothes fully on, he rushed over and shoved all his laundry into Gangxun’s pile, waiting to enjoy the fruits of someone else’s labor.
There was no washing machine in the rental. He had heard from a neighbor that units without one were about a hundred yuan cheaper. Consequently, every time Zhijuan needed to do laundry, he would keep a close eye on Gangxun, waiting for him to start the wash.
His gaze unintentionally brushed past a pair of oversized black underwear in the pile. Hmph, Zhou Gangxun doesn’t just have big hands and feet… his butt must be huge, too.
Disgusted, Zhijuan looked away and headed back to the room, wanting to finish his boxed lunch.
But just as he sat on the sofa, Gangxun’s cold voice drifted out from the bathroom: “Wash them yourself.”
Before Zhijuan could even head back, he saw his clothes being picked out and tossed onto the bathroom floor. The small item sitting right on top was clearly his little pair of underwear.
“Zhou Gangxun!” Zhijuan screamed. Those were his favorite pair—mint green with cream-colored butterflies embroidered on them and a white lace trim.
“How… how could you throw them on the floor?” Zhijuan immediately spotted a dark footprint on the edge. Gangxun had actually stepped on them!
Such a huge footprint. What a bastard! Zhou Gangxun is a total turtle-bastard!
Looking at Zhijuan’s expression, which suggested he wanted to build a tomb for the underwear and burn spirit money for it every Qingming Festiva, Gangxun couldn’t be bothered to argue. “If you don’t wash them, go naked.”
Go naked? Hearing this, Zhijuan’s apricot eyes widened in fury. How could Gangxun suggest he go naked?
He didn’t know what had gotten into Gangxun today. Usually, letting the man wash his underwear could be considered a reward, yet he was being so ungrateful. Who knew what Gangxun usually did with his laundry in secret?
Before he could say another word, Gangxun slammed the bathroom door shut, unilaterally ending the conversation.
Stripping off his clothes, Gangxun looked at himself in the mirror. His body was strong and powerful, his muscle lines were well-defined, and his legs showed no signs of atrophy or bedsores. He looked nothing like the version of himself he had seen in his mind—the one with no surgical scars on his abdomen, no missing organs, and no black, festering, infected wounds.
“Zhou Gangxun… you’re washing clothes anyway, what’s the big deal if you do mine too?”
“I’m your wife, you’re supposed to do my laundry…”
Zhijuan leaned against the door, rambling incessantly. His voice was naturally soft, so he sounded a bit like a cat in heat, but even a cat’s yowling gets annoying if it never stops.
Gangxun turned on the faucet, hoping the sound of running water would drown out Zhijuan’s buzzing.
During the three days since the Zhou family went bankrupt, he had been having a recurring dream. He dreamed he was the villain of a novel, and Ruan Zhijuan was the malicious “fake young master” character.
The novel was set in Hong Kong around the year 2000, and the plot aligned perfectly with his life so far.
This included the night they were drugged, which led to their marriage. Two days later, the district head candidate supported by the Zhou family was suspected of corruption and international money laundering. This led banks to suspect the Zhou family of illicit profit transfers, resulting in a rejected application for a massive capital transfer. That rejection triggered a domino effect.
First, the stock price plummeted. Then, core project technology was leaked, and technical staff jumped ship. Led by the Ruan and Ji families, multiple companies joined in a commercial siege. Finally, a week ago, bankruptcy was declared, trading was suspended, and assets were liquidated.
Four days ago, they had moved from Hong Kong to this place.
Gangxun immersed his body in the icy water. He was always the one forcing others into liquidation; this was his first time tasting the bitterness of being betrayed by everyone.
Then there were the epilogues. A few brief sentences in those extra chapters had laid out his entire tragic future.
In the story, after his bankruptcy, Zhijuan couldn’t stand the poverty of living in a rental. While living off Gangxun’s earnings and hurling verbal abuse at him, he sought a way to climb back up the social ladder. He eventually began an affair with a foreman at the construction site.
At first, the two were discreet. Later, Gangxun had an accident at the site and was rushed to the emergency room. When Zhijuan heard the amount of the compensation payout, he refused to sign the consent forms for surgery, hoping Gangxun would die from his injuries. To his surprise, Gangxun’s condition suddenly improved and stabilized.
His life was saved, but he was left completely paralyzed from the waist down.
From then on, Zhijuan became even more ruthless. The two of them no longer hid their affair from him. To keep him quiet, they would often feed him sleeping pills, tie him to a chair, or simply leave him in the bathroom, only tossing him cold leftovers when they happened to remember him.
Later, the foreman ran away with the construction funds and the compensation money.
Taking advantage of a time when Gangxun was delirious with a high fever, Zhijuan wiped his body with tears in his eyes, kissing him and promising to live a good life together. He claimed he only acted that way before because he had no money and felt insecure. He coaxed and deceived Gangxun into signing for a high-interest loan, essentially selling his blood, his kidneys, and himself.
But before the next morning arrived, Zhijuan packed his bags and fled with someone else in the middle of the night.
All that was left was a man with a persistent fever, staring helplessly with wide eyes at the empty rental room. He eventually ended up in an illegal clinic, his organs harvested one by one, watching his own body succumb to necrosis and complications, rotting and bleeding day and night.
The character had really played him like a dog.
Back then, his mind must have been clouded to fall for such a scam.
Gangxun let out a low sneer, looking down at his palm. Zhijuan’s neck was so thin that he wouldn’t even need a fan, he could snap it with one hand.
“Zhou Gangxun…” Zhijuan’s voice drifted in again, sounding like he was trying to strike a bargain. “I’ll let you… let you smell my little underwear, okay?”
Under the cold water, Gangxun froze instantly. He frowned at the silhouette pressed against the door, trying to peer inside. What did he just say?
Before Gangxun could even wonder if his ears were playing tricks on him, the voice outside added a condition. “But… you can’t get anything on them…”
With a loud thud, Gangxun’s fist smashed into the water heater pipe, denting it.
Smell! My! Ass!
