Be Good, Let Me Kiss You One More Time - Chapter 3
Chapter 3: He Is Her Guardian
The man stood with his back to the light, his tall silhouette enveloping her, completely blocking out the light before her eyes into a heavy darkness.
Panic fluttered in Lu Miao’s heart. “What… what do you want to do?”
“Getting closer, so you can see more clearly.”
The man blocked her against the refrigerator, his chest nearly touching the tip of her nose. She immediately caught a deep, somber scent.
She looked up in a panic, meeting a pair of pitch-black, profound eyes.
Lu Miao saw the turbulent surge in his eyes and was so frightened she started to stutter. “I—I’m warning you, don’t do anything reckless.”
Fu Shiyue let out a “heh.” As if prepared long ago, he pulled a certificate from his pocket and unfolded it before her.
“Look closely. I am your guardian now. Even if the police come, it won’t matter.”
“…”
Lu Miao’s face flushed with embarrassment; she felt this man had intentionally led her to misunderstand.
She turned her head to look at the certificate, and her eyes widened in disbelief.
Lu Yan had actually handed over her guardianship to this man!
Although Lu Miao was already 18, the local regulations stated that guardianship could only be terminated at age 20!
What was particularly perverse was that he possessed the highest authority of restraint over her; she could not leave the scope of his supervision.
This meant she had to live with him and could have no objection to it.
Lu Miao trembled with rage. “My house has no rooms for you to stay in!”
Fu Shiyue scanned the surroundings. It was a three-bedroom, one-living-room apartment; because few people lived there, the furniture was relatively new.
All the room doors were tightly shut, a clear sign that the owner protected her private space fiercely and did not allow it to be opened rashly.
Fu Shiyue withdrew his gaze and looked down at her puffed-up little face. “I’ll sleep on the sofa.”
“Suit yourself!”
She pushed the man away forcefully and walked off in a huff, slamming her bedroom door with a thunderous bang.
Fu Shiyue stared at the door Lu Miao had slammed shut, his brow pressing down with a somber expression.
Just then, Lu Yan’s call came in. Fu Shiyue walked to the sofa and answered.
“So, is my niece quite a headache?”
Fu Shiyue gave a light snort. “Just a young girl, rather rebellious.”
Lu Yan sounded quite melancholy. “Miao Miao isn’t a bad kid at heart. She was just separated from her parents at a young age and got used to doing things her own way.”
When it came to Lu Miao, Lu Yan had endless things to say—a typical case of someone who complains about his child’s faults but actually loves her to death.
“I have to ask you to take more care of Miao Miao, and try to help her fix those bad habits while you’re at it. When I come back for the New Year, I’ll host a proper banquet for you.”
Fu Shiyue leaned back into the sofa and let out a light scoff upon hearing this. “Since when did you become so formal with me?”
Lu Yan and Fu Shiyue had been close friends for years. The only reason he was being formal was due to his guilt toward Lu Miao. “I usually have little time to spend with her. I really can’t feel at ease with her home alone.”
Lu Yan was physically abroad but had the heart of a worrying mother.
Mainly, Lu Miao was too undisciplined. It was fine when he was home, but the moment he left, she was like a runaway horse. He worried about her being swindled outside or mixing with a bad crowd.
It just so happened that his friend had recently retired from the military due to some circumstances, making him the perfect candidate to manage her with military-style discipline.
“By the way, you’ve already sent her home by now, right?”
Fu Shiyue turned his head. “She’s in her room. Do you want her to get on the phone?”
“No need. She’s probably angry with me right now.”
Fu Shiyue looked at the tightly closed door and gave a low laugh. “You certainly know her well.”
Fu Shiyue moving into Lu Miao’s house was done with Lu Yan’s authorization. Lu Yan worried about Lu Miao staying out at night and wanted Fu Shiyue to live there to keep an eye on her.
“She’s currently very resistant.” Fu Shiyue felt that in the girl’s eyes right now, he probably looked like a pervert forcing his way into her home.
Lu Yan let out a heavy sigh. “This is my fault. If it wasn’t for what happened back then, she wouldn’t have forgotten you.”
Fu Shiyue’s expression stiffened slightly, and the shade in his eyes deepened cryptically.
After hanging up, Fu Shiyue habitually reached for a cigarette. His peripheral vision inadvertently fell on a photo album on the coffee table, and his movements paused slightly.
He tucked the unlit cigarette between his fingers and picked up the album.
In the photo, Lu Miao was about three or four years old, her smile innocent and brilliant, the pupils of her eyes a clear, deep black—it was as if the happiest of times were frozen there.
However, the faces of her father and mother were completely blacked out with ink.
He studied it for a long time before putting it back.
Lu Miao tossed and turned in bed.
Lu Yan had actually dumped her on an old man and patted his own butt to leave!
How irresponsible. What right did he have to be her uncle?
In a fit of pique, she threw the doll Lu Yan had given her onto the floor. But for some reason, her eyes suddenly turned red.
She picked the doll back up, patted off the dust, and hugged it tightly to her chest with a drooping head.
Lu Miao was three years old when Lu Yan brought her home. On her birthday that year, Lu Yan didn’t come back, but sent someone to give her this teddy bear.
It was the first birthday gift she had ever received. She was so happy that day that even though Lu Yan didn’t come back to celebrate with her, she didn’t blame him anymore.
Lu Yan was often away from home and, worrying she would be scared alone, told her to sleep hugging the doll at night.
Later, as she grew older, Lu Miao realized that Lu Yan lied and called it a birthday gift because he simply couldn’t accompany her.
That was how her childhood went.
From causing trouble initially to attract attention and gain care, to now being used to being alone, it was very difficult for her to accept someone else barging into her world and disrupting her life.
Lu Miao pricked up her ears to listen; there was no sound outside. Did that man really stay the night at her house?
Forget it, it wouldn’t be decent to kick him out so late. Let him stay one night, and she’d find a way to get rid of him tomorrow.
Ring ring ring—
Lu Miao was woken by her alarm. Groggy, she reached out from under the covers to turn it off.
Habitually climbing out of bed in her fuzzy pajamas, she dragged her sleepy body toward the bathroom to wash up.
Opening the door, Lu Miao froze in place.
Warm sunlight spilled into the living room. The man was gone, and the sofa was clean and tidy, with not a single trace of someone having lain there.
Did that man know she was going to kick him out this morning, so he left on his own last night?
Lu Miao curled her lip. Just as she was about to go wash up, she noticed a packed breakfast on the dining table.
She was startled for a moment, then walked over to open the containers.
It was shrimp dumplings and custard buns from Chen Kee, the aroma wafting up to her nose.
A heart-shaped sticky note was attached to the box. It was pink, and originally had the seller’s message: “Wishing you a happy life and an enjoyable meal.”
Right below it was a handwritten sentence that completely spoiled the mood.
“If you don’t want to eat it, throw it away. It was bought with your uncle’s money anyway.”
“…”
The handwriting was nice, but the man was more of a dog than a dog.
Lu Miao tossed the note aside and went to wash up.
Hengtong University.
Lu Miao didn’t like studying and didn’t have many friends. But in the second semester of her senior year of high school, she got a new deskmate—a quiet, well-behaved girl. Every time Lu Miao played on her phone during class, the teacher would come by to check, and the deskmate would whisper a warning and even bring Lu Miao breakfast.
Lu Miao thought the new deskmate was nice. Seeing her study from dawn to dusk in the classroom, Lu Miao felt she worked too hard and wanted to accompany her.
The homeroom teacher, seeing Lu Miao change her ways, hurried to call her uncle to tell him not to worry—at this rate, she could get into a regular second-tier university.
But when Lu Miao received an admission notice for a top-tier key university, the teacher fainted from excitement, and the deskmate broke off their friendship.
Once in university, she still didn’t like studying.
However, since it was just the start of the second semester of freshman year, she had to put on a bit of a good performance.
Lu Miao arrived at the classroom early and found an empty seat in the back row.
She had just taken out her breakfast.
“Smells so good! Miao Miao, who bought you breakfast?”
Wang Gege leaned over to gossip, looking at the lavish breakfast with interest. “It couldn’t be some suitor, could it?”
Lu Miao gave two dry laughs.
