- Chapter 1 - Broken Engagement and Exile
“Nina, I regret to inform you that you are no longer suitable as the Crown Prince’s fiancée. I am annulling our engagement.”
The Crown Prince of the Glear Empire declared this to me.
We were at the grand stage of the graduation party.
He believed the rumors spread by his mistress and called off our engagement.
So, he chooses a mistress he’s known for only about two years over me, his fiancée since birth.
That fact felt like a denial of my very existence.
I hung my head. I could feel my black hair coming undone. It seemed to symbolize my doomed fate.
Everything was over. I just wanted to die right then and there. After all, I had nowhere left to belong.
“I strip you of all your rights and sentence you to exile.”
Do whatever you want with me. The fate of a noble who loses in power struggles is always tragic.
“Wait!!”
A loud voice echoed through the hall, challenging the Crown Prince’s decision.
Why?
Anyone who opposes the Crown Prince faces nothing but ruin.
While I’d be happy if someone wanted to die with me. There’s no need for anyone else to share my doomed fate!
I turned around.
And there, I encountered my destiny.
“Please wait, Your Highness. She is still a duke’s daughter. Nowhere in imperial law does it state that the Crown Prince may arbitrarily exile a subject. Sentencing is the jurisdiction of the courts and His Majesty the Emperor. To do so would violate both imperial and judicial authority, jeopardizing your own position as well.”
He had blond hair and a tall, slender build. His beauty was the envy of every woman in high society.
It was Margrave Franz of Aurelia, who wielded influence second only to the imperial family.
He was one year my senior, a childhood friend whose family had been close to mine for generations.
“Margrave of Aurelia.”
The Crown Prince glared at him. But he couldn’t simply ignore his counsel.
The Aurelia border territory was the frontline against neighboring countries and exceptionally permitted to maintain its own military forces. Their military power comprised a formidable twenty percent of the entire imperial army. To slight them carelessly could risk dividing the nation in civil war.
Margrave Franz had lost his parents early and became head of his prestigious house at a young age. Yet his talent was considered unparalleled in the empire. He was also one of the electors granted voting rights in selecting the next emperor, so even the Crown Prince would want to avoid direct confrontation with him.
Moreover, the Margrave’s argument was perfectly reasonable. Even for royalty, exiling a subject without trial was unacceptable—too tyrannical. The atmosphere in the venue was turning against the Crown Prince.
“But my honor…”
“Then, please entrust Duchess Nina to me. I have known her for a long time and should be able to handle this discreetly. Furthermore, if Your Highness were to send her to the borderlands for reflection due to her shortcomings as a fiancée, it would not tarnish your reputation.”
My ex-fiancé was thoroughly cornered.
As expected of the empire’s finest mind. Even in this crisis, he effortlessly protected me.
“I leave it to you.”
“Your gracious words…”
And so, I embarked on a new life.
