Apocalyptic Island - Chapter 7
Chapter 7
The more critical the moment, the more composed and calm Wen Yishu became.
She was holding one of the Variant’s hands, while the woman was using her other hand to fight Bai Mi.
The woman seemed relaxed, but she was actually under attack from both sides.
Wen Yishu’s mind raced, thinking about the woman’s weaknesses.
The seemingly weak parts of the woman’s body, her elastic hands and feet, were incredibly hard. The fact that she pushed the flamethrower away meant she was also afraid of fire.
Wen Yishu realized that the previous attack might have been a condition to stimulate the other party’s evolution.
Otherwise, with her flexibility, she wouldn’t have been so foolish as to stretch out her hand and let her burn it.
If her limbs were her strength, then what was her weakness?
She was still maintaining a human form, so her body parts should be roughly the same, right?
Humans have many weaknesses. The three most fatal points are the neck, the back of the head, and the heart.
Her thoughts were only for a moment. She raised her dagger and, just before she was about to suffocate, she plunged it into the woody part of the woman’s chest.
The dagger felt like it was sinking into a grapefruit, but also like it was stuck in some kind of unknown swamp. Every inch it moved forward, there was an inexplicable sense of stagnation.
The pressure on her neck increased. The woman’s sinister smile came to a halt.
Wen Yishu used all her strength to cut open her chest with the dagger. The woman murmured, “How could this be…”
She fell to the ground with an unwilling growl. Wen Yishu’s vision turned black from being choked. She took a deep breath of fresh air. There was a dagger also stuck in the back of the Variant’s head.
She looked up and saw Bai Mi walking toward her, reaching out her hand and pulling her up from the ground.
She coughed twice and said thank you, then pulled the dagger out of the woman.
She felt a sense of unreality. She had killed someone, or more accurately, she had killed a Variant that could no longer be called a human.
In the first two decades of her life, Wen Yishu had never done anything illegal. At this moment, she stared at her hands, lost in thought.
It was the first time she had felt such intense malice. She was not a pushover, and killing the other party was an inevitable outcome.
Wen Yishu had a good quality: she was able to accept any situation well.
After she figured this out, she no longer had any burden on her heart. Her eyes became firm, and she stood up.
The fight had consumed a lot of her physical strength. The body just lay on the ground, and she didn’t have the strength to deal with it anymore.
Her woody chest did not bleed, but a putrid, foul-smelling liquid flowed out.
Her whole body also quickly shriveled up, revealing her appearance at the time of her death.
Where the dagger had been plunged in, there was now a pitch-black hole. Something inside seemed to be reflecting some light under the ceiling lamp.
Wen Yishu squatted down, carefully avoiding the sticky liquid that had flowed out.
She reinserted the dagger into that area.
The tip of the knife hit something hard. She stirred it and used force to dig the object out of the body.
It was a white crystal stone the size of a thumb, which looked like a polished crystal and was very beautiful.
However, there were tiny cracks on it. She finally understood why the Variant had died. It must have been stabbed in a vital spot. The crystal stone had no stains on it and was very clean.
The moment the crystal core was dug out, the body shriveled up at a speed visible to the naked eye. It quickly became like a piece of air-dried jerky, thin and withered. All the water in the body flowed to the ground, spreading out in a large area on the originally clean and tidy corridor.
Wen Yishu stepped on some of it, but at this moment, she didn’t have the mind to care about her shoes. She sent a message to Huo Xiaoguan and the others again, telling them to come in now.
She also told the three of them that there might be Variants and mutated plants downstairs.
The three of them were already freezing. Seeing the message from Wen Yishu, they quickly ran inside.
Bai Mi took the white crystal from Wen Yishu’s hand and examined it carefully. The two of them didn’t know the value of this crystal for the time being, but they thought it shouldn’t be anything bad.
After all, the body had decomposed, but the crystal was unharmed. The crystal was most likely the Variant’s energy source.
However, what kind of energy it contained was still unknown.
The two of them didn’t examine it for too long. After resting, they walked downstairs.
Wen Yishu really wanted to know what the situation was like downstairs and if they could go out. This was crucial for their subsequent retreat.
Of course, she also inexplicably wanted to know what happened to the robot at the entrance.
In the face of such a sudden situation, what measures would the robot butler take? This was a program that didn’t exist in its programming. No contingency plan had ever mentioned this.
The floors were quiet. They couldn’t see a single person or any crazy plants.
Wen Yishu’s long, loose hair was tied up in a bun behind her head, making her look very capable. She was wearing a black tracksuit and protective gear.
If you ignored her heavy panting from the excessive exercise, she looked like a capable athlete.
Because there were no obstacles, the two of them quickly reached the first floor.
The apartment’s originally open front door was now tightly shut.
The surrounding windows were all blocked by tree trunks and bushes, making them airtight. The lights in the lobby were very dim. The ceiling lights flickered and emitted a white light due to the unstable voltage.
The originally clean and tidy public lobby was now a mess.
The blood-stained sofa was overturned, glass was shattered all over the floor, and most of the ceiling lights were out.
The housekeeping robots that were waiting in the service area were lying scattered on the floor. The area was full of their broken limbs, and there were large splashes of blood on them.
Perhaps when the outbreak first started, someone was standing in front of the housekeeping robots, ready to hire two to go up and work. They were taken by this sudden disaster before they had a chance to.
The butler robot that was originally at the service desk was also nowhere to be seen. It was unknown where it had run off to.
The money tree in the large green pot at the entrance had grown so lush that it almost occupied half of the lobby. The originally sparse branches and leaves were now incredibly dense.
The service desk and lounge area were also destroyed. Wen Yishu saw the elevator next to them. The elevator’s number pointed to -1.
The apartments built by Rhine had a policy for dealing with typhoons. There was a temporary underground shelter below the apartment. The elevator had no obvious signs of damage. It was highly likely that the fall was man-made.
She didn’t know if the apartment manager had made this decision. Bai Mi simply opened the elevator’s power box and found that it was in a tripped state. The two of them were even more certain of this guess.
In the dead silent environment, there were suddenly two knocks on the door. Wen Yishu was startled at first, and then she received a message from Huo Xiaoguan.
She said that they were already outside the door, but the door was locked, and they couldn’t get in.
The apartment’s front door was a hardware lock with a password. It was unknown who had locked it. The black electronic screen showed a red locked symbol.
Wen Yishu had seen this lock before in the headquarters’ research lab.
Without a password and an unlock command, people outside couldn’t get in, and people inside couldn’t get out.
Huo Xiaoguan and the other two were shivering from the cold outside, but at least they weren’t getting wet from the rain anymore. Looking at the rain that was getting heavier and heavier, the three of them huddled together, shivering.
Wen Yishu thought of the back door. She left Bai Mi to study the electronic lock and quickly ran to the other exit of the apartment to check.
The height of the first floor of the apartment was no less than the rooms above. It had a five-meter ceiling. Seven or eight of the lights along the way were broken. The remaining ones could only barely illuminate the path in front of her.
She ran until her throat was almost smoking before she reached the other door.
Unfortunately, the lock here was also locked. She saw the red symbol from a distance.
But she still ran to the front to confirm it and observed the situation outside.
There were two doors here. She could stand at the side of the winding window and see the other door. The situation here was much worse than at the front door.
The outside was full of climbing plants, covering the entire door so that not a single bit of its original color could be seen.
Fortunately, the door inside was thick enough that the plants outside couldn’t get in. Only the wall next to it and a corner of this window were not covered.
Wen Yishu sighed. It seemed that even if the door opened, only the front door could be used for entry and exit.
Just as she was about to go back, she suddenly heard the sound of footsteps in the quiet air.
The footsteps were leisurely and unhurried. It was not the crisp sound of Bai Mi’s boots. Wen Yishu immediately held her breath.
She quickly turned off her quantum computer’s flashlight. Someone was walking toward her. No, it might not be a person walking toward her…
The moment the flashlight went out, the world plunged into darkness. There was no cover around her. She could only stand in the dead corner of the window and carefully listen to the slowly approaching footsteps.
But the owner of the footsteps seemed to be toying with her. When she turned off the flashlight, the footsteps became incredibly slow.
She didn’t know if it was her imagination, but each step seemed to be separated by a long time before it fell heavily again.
Wen Yishu’s heart couldn’t help but pound heavily along with the footsteps. Who was it? Had that person already found her?
She held the newly wiped dagger across her chest and carefully listened to the movement from the corridor.
Just a moment ago, it was still a bit far away. The next moment, the footsteps were right in front of her.
Wen Yishu’s heart was in her throat. The person would definitely be exposed to her sight with just one more step forward.
In addition to fear, there was a strange feeling of excitement from the Variant.
Her body, which had just been so tired, was now full of strength again. Her arms were tense, and she once again gripped the dagger tightly.
The “tap-tap” of footsteps sounded again. Wen Yishu also raised her dagger high.
The footsteps gradually sped up and moved away.
Then all sounds disappeared at this moment, so quiet that it seemed to be Wen Yishu’s imagination.
This silent environment lasted for nearly a minute. In front of her was a darkness where she couldn’t see her hand in front of her face.
Just as Wen Yishu was wondering if the person had left, she pressed the flashlight button.
The moment the light came on, a pale face was tightly pressed against hers.
