Apocalyptic Island - Chapter 5
Chapter 5
Dang it. Wen Yishu clenched her quantum computer. How did she know she was still alive?
She had been ignoring the messages, but the messages kept coming.
Minister Wang: Please reply if you received this.
Soon, she figured out why.
The only possibility was the quantum computer on her wrist, which was given to her when she started the job.
The new employee gift had a complete set of features, including monitoring the employee’s vital signs to prevent sudden death.
She had almost forgotten about it. Now that she was wearing it, the minister should be able to see it.
It was actually a great feature, and usually, the quantum computer didn’t have any other issues.
She hadn’t thought about this aspect. Wen Yishu didn’t intend to hide it, but it was a different matter to tell him herself versus him finding out.
She felt very uncomfortable inside, and her good impression of the minister soured. She had no intention of replying to him.
The minister’s name was Wang Li. He wasn’t her direct superior, but he usually took good care of everyone in the group and was a well-known nice guy.
But for some reason, this time his concern made her feel a little awkward.
However, given his sense of responsibility toward his team members, it was understandable for him to ask a few more questions.
Wen Yishu didn’t put down her quantum computer. If she were to reply, it would seem too deliberate.
She would reply later. She now needed to go downstairs and discuss with Bai Mi what to do next.
The best-case scenario would be to get Huo Xiaoguan and Ling Shuang into the building.
The aloe in the corridor outside was also a problem. If they had to go out later, the plants outside would be a huge nuisance.
When she went downstairs, Bai Mi was still sitting on the sofa in the same position as before.
However, she had a laptop in her hands. The style looked a bit old, a common slim laptop from the past.
She was typing something with her hands, wearing a pair of rimless glasses, and her expression was very focused.
Wen Yishu asked, “Team leader, what are you doing?”
Bai Mi quietly said a few words: “Storing information. The internet won’t go down in the short term, but I just accessed Aix, and its advice is to stock up on a large amount of knowledge and food. This disaster won’t end anytime soon.”
Aix was a new generation of artificial intelligence. In the few years since its appearance, technology had developed rapidly, and many manual jobs had been replaced by a cheaper and more efficient artificial intelligence.
Aix was completely different from a normal, unintelligent AI. It had truly achieved independent thinking and could create multiple possible options based on the environment. It was said to be a product that Rhine had researched for decades, and after being released to the market, it was widely praised.
She didn’t doubt Aix’s advice, but she did complain in her heart that it seemed obvious, given what was happening outside.
Even if the Federation were a god, order and the city could not be rebuilt in the short term.
They had only been in a technology-driven development for a few years. If you think about it, the subsequent collapse of the Federation was also reasonable.
Wen Yishu: “But according to what you said, storing these things is useless, right? After all, the internet will go down, and the electricity should also go down.”
Bai Mi’s typing hand paused. She looked up at her. “I have solar panels.”
Wen Yishu: ?
A flamethrower, solar panels, and water tanks. How could these all appear on one person at the same time?
Wen Yishu wondered in her heart, “Can I see your study?”
Bai Mi pointed with her hand: “Feel free.”
Wen Yishu opened the study door, feeling it was a bit heavy. As soon as she entered, she was stunned by the scene inside.
The room was almost the same as the living room, piled high with many things, all kinds of electronic products, and some things that she had only seen in survival documentaries.
Axes, searchlights, solar panels, tents, all kinds of tools. Basically, anything Wen Yishu could think of and couldn’t think of was here.
Were these all the team leader’s hobbies? She carefully stepped over the tools on the floor. There were even cooking utensils.
Wen Yishu looked around and silently backed out. If the other person hadn’t stockpiled food, she would have suspected that Bai Mi knew this was going to happen beforehand.
The steam pot kept the vegetables warm. Wen Yishu thought she should eat some. Although she had a lot of food stockpiled, it was a bit difficult to support two people, so she couldn’t waste anything now.
The announcement on the live feed said that fully cooked vegetables were not aggressive. Unless someone came up with a technology that could make eggs un-cook, it was perfectly safe to eat them.
Otherwise, if these couldn’t be eaten, humanity would perish sooner or later.
Wen Yishu divided the large pot of vegetables into three portions. One for herself, one for Bai Mi, and the rest she planned to save for the three people who would be returning later.
She dipped some light soy sauce and vinegar and ate quickly. These vegetables were no different from what they were before the plants outside mutated.
Just now, she was probably too nervous to notice her hunger, but now that she had started, she couldn’t stop.
Although it was just simple seasoning, she ate with great relish.
This was the first time she had eaten with her team leader. She sat upright at the table, putting the food into her mouth with a blank expression.
Wen Yishu suddenly remembered when colleagues from other teams gossiped about the team leader.
They said she never had meals with them and they had never seen her eat. Now that technology was so advanced, androids and robots were made to look no different from real people.
They suspected she was an android and didn’t need to eat.
At the time, Wen Yishu had even observed Bai Mi for a while because of this bad joke. It was indeed as those people had said; she was rarely seen eating.
But now Wen Yishu was eating with her. She was just more refined in her eating. She was completely different from the robot downstairs that only knew how to fake a smile.
The strange feeling that came from remembering the bad joke suddenly disappeared. Wen Yishu let out a sigh of relief. She was just scaring herself.
As she lowered her head, she heard the sound of chopsticks dropping. Wen Yishu looked up blankly at the other person.
She saw Bai Mi bending down to pick up the chopsticks on the floor. She quickly went forward and asked, “What’s wrong?”
Her hand was shaking so badly. Wen Yishu’s heart sank, and the updated information on the live feed inexplicably came to her mind.
Mutated people were highly aggressive. So far, there were too few cases, so there was no definite explanation.
She couldn’t help but pick up the thermometer from the table and slowly approach Bai Mi.
She took her temperature before Bai Mi could look up. The thermometer “beeped” loudly, and the temperature displayed was 37.1℃.
Wen Yishu breathed a sigh of relief, but also felt a little embarrassed.
Bai Mi didn’t say anything. She just picked up the chopsticks, and her hand was still shaking uncontrollably.
Wen Yishu wanted to explain. They were a little close. When Bai Mi put down the chopsticks, her hand unintentionally touched the back of Wen Yishu’s hand.
It was as cold as ice, which gave Wen Yishu a jolt. She immediately reacted and had an absurd thought. Could she be cold?
Bai Mi was only wearing a white shirt and a light gray sweater vest.
The indoor temperature was very low, and her exhaled breath turned into a faint white mist.
Wen Yishu handed the warm yellow blanket from the sofa to her. “Maybe you need this.”
Bai Mi didn’t move. She took the blanket from her hand and put it on herself. She also slightly tucked in her fair neck.
She closed her eyes comfortably and continued eating the food in her bowl. Her hand no longer trembled like before.
It was really because she was cold. Wen Yishu was going crazy in her heart, clenching her hands into fists.
It’s cold, and she doesn’t know to put on more clothes. How did those people spread the rumor that the team leader was an android? Which android can’t take care of itself???
While Wen Yishu was doubting her life, Huo Xiaoguan, Ling Shuang, and Huang Fei had already climbed down from the coconut tree.
The sky was overcast, and a light drizzle was falling.
If this were in the hot coastal city, this rain might have been very pleasant, but the temperature was getting colder and colder. The drizzle gave them a wet, chilling feeling that went straight into the bones of the three of them.
Huo Xiaoguan sighed, put her swimming cap back on, and waved to the other two. They carefully lined up and walked toward the apartment.
The plants that had been so wild earlier were now quiet, as if nothing had happened. They were still in place, with no flying branches or shocking sharp edges.
The three of them were a little hesitant at first, but seeing that there was nothing strange, they quickened their pace and walked toward the apartment.
However, they were still carefully trying to avoid the plants along the way. After walking for half an hour, they finally got close to the apartment.
The door was still intact. The entrance was very large, with basically no plants. The green area next to it was almost completely covered with vegetation.
The tall trees almost covered the entire apartment. The bushes in the middle blocked the first floor completely, making it impossible to see what the situation was like inside.
Huo Xiaoguan took a photo and sent it to Wen Yishu.
The outer walls below the fifth floor were almost completely covered with dense climbing plants. The sight of all this green made Wen Yishu feel very uncomfortable.
It was like looking at a highly vibrant oil painting. It no longer looked like an apartment.
The two of them said that the plants were not attacking now. They didn’t know who had closed the apartment door.
If they couldn’t open it, they asked if she could come downstairs and help them check.
“I’ll go with you.” Bai Mi didn’t bring any winter clothes, so she had to wear hers.
Her build was taller than hers, so the slightly loose clothes fit her perfectly.
Wen Yishu nodded. She also wanted to see what it was like outside now.
The two of them put on all their protective gear. Wen Yishu took the other flamethrower and quickly learned how to use it under Bai Mi’s guidance.
She stood in front of the door, took a deep breath, and opened the tightly closed door.
It was quiet outside, just like usual. The violent aloe seemed to have also calmed down.
The sensor light in front of the door was broken. She turned on the searchlight and looked out through the crack in the door.
The huge aloe plant stood upright against the wall, like a standing figure in the darkness. Wen Yishu took a deep breath and waved to Bai Mi.
The two of them slowly walked out of the room, keeping their sounds to a minimum.
They stepped onto the corridor safely, but Wen Yishu’s next step froze.
The searchlight cast a long shadow of the aloe plant in front of them. A person covered in blood was standing right behind that shadow.
