Apocalyptic Island - Chapter 4
Chapter 4
She found the messages from the two of them strange. Looking at the rescue information from Rhine, she ultimately decided not to confirm it.
She trusted the minister, but it wasn’t a wise move to expose herself too early.
With so many people needing rescue, she wouldn’t be in the first wave anyway. It was better to wait and see.
After dealing with the crisis in the refrigerator, Wen Yishu suggested that they should store water in the house first, and Bai Mi would provide the tools.
Rhine apartments were of very good quality, so there was no need to worry about the structural load-bearing capacity of storing water.
While waiting for the water to fill up, Wen Yishu quickly typed on her quantum computer, asking about the situation of the two of them.
After sending the photos, Ling Shuang’s flipper got tangled in the seaweed below, just as Wen Yishu had expected.
Fortunately, Huo Xiaoguan found it in time and quickly cut the seaweed.
After Wen Yishu called the lifeguard, they all pulled Ling Shuang out of the water.
The area for swimming and diving had been cleared, and there were no other plants besides the seaweed below.
As soon as the three of them surfaced, they were washed ashore by a huge wave. The three of them clung tightly to a coconut tree.
They watched helplessly as the white wooden planks of the pier below were crushed into powder by the moss that had grown on them.
The plants on the sand by the beach grew rapidly, completely blocking all the land.
Fortunately, the coconut tree also grew rapidly, which prevented the three of them from being submerged by the dense bushes below.
The three of them listened to the distant screams and watched the plants below grow crazily, spending the beginning of the plant explosion in fear and anxiety.
It wasn’t until the plants stopped growing that the three of them, relying on each other, freed up their hands to send messages to Wen Yishu and check the live feed.
The three of them still didn’t dare to come down from the tree for now. For the time being, the coconut tree was safe.
Wen Yishu looked at the pictures Huo Xiaoguan sent. The sky outside had already become completely gloomy.
Their location was quite high, at least twenty to thirty meters from the ground. The coconut tree currently showed no signs of attacking people.
The plants below were also very dense. The ones near the sea looked like seaweed, and further inland, there were low bushes and other landscape trees.
The canteen near the apartment had tilted. The building materials there were not as good as the apartment’s.
The apartment was just wrapped in trees, and not even the windows were broken. The canteen, on the other hand, had tilted at one corner.
One side of the wall had fallen, which was a shocking sight.
The surrounding buildings that didn’t belong to Rhine were also more or less damaged. The giant green plants looked like ordinary tree shadows magnified several times.
Why were the plants in the apartment aggressive, but the coconut tree that Huo Xiaoguan and the other two had climbed on didn’t attack them?
She thought of the spider plant in her room, which was also aggressive. Her team leader’s room should have had one as well.
“Team leader, how did you deal with the spider plant in your room?”
Bai Mi was still filling up water. Her hands did not stop. “I put it in the groove outside the windowsill.”
Wen Yishu: “Can I go up and take a look?”
Bai Mi stood up, put the newly filled water aside, and said without turning her head, “Yes.”
She went upstairs and headed straight for the window. The groove outside the windowsill was the same. The tree trunk outside the window grew close to the window, completely blocking it.
The spider plant that was placed outside was now completely squashed, pot and all.
The entire plant was so warped that it was stuck to the glass. The originally plump, fleshy leaves were squeezed very flat.
The green sap didn’t even have extra space to flow down. It was tightly pressed against the glass as if fixed in a suction cup.
It looked no different from a normal spider plant.
Wen Yishu let out a breath. It seemed that this one hadn’t mutated.
This confirmed her guess that not all plants mutated and became aggressive.
The three of them should still be safe for now.
She returned to her own room. Her window was better than Bai Mi’s.
It wasn’t completely covered by branches. The branches that had grown only slightly went over the edge of her window.
She could clearly see the gloomy sky and the rain outside.
The drizzle had turned into heavy rain, hitting the window with a sizzling sound. If it weren’t for what had just happened, Wen Yishu would have thought it was a comfortable gloomy day.
She picked up her quantum computer and zoomed in on the distant beach.
From her room, she could see the situation at the beach.
Unfortunately, the tree where Huo Xiaoguan and Ling Shuang were was not within her line of sight.
A message from the two of them came in on her quantum computer: “I feel like we’re going to get hypothermia if we stay here.”
Wen Yishu was also a little anxious. Being drenched in the rain was no joke.
She felt that the temperature in the room had dropped a bit. Even with her jacket on, her hands and feet felt a little cold, not to mention the two of them outside.
The three of them were now shivering from the cold on the tree, and their physical strength was rapidly depleting.
If they didn’t find a place to shelter from the rain soon, the three of them might be in danger of hypothermia.
The lifeguard, Huang Fei, disagreed with going down. Only Huo Xiaoguan insisted on going down, while Ling Shuang was indecisive.
Now that the plants were calm, it was the best opportunity. If they didn’t go down, who could guarantee that the three of them would be able to wait for rescue here?
Besides, the two of them didn’t want to expose themselves too early. They, like Wen Yishu, were not in the first wave of people to be rescued.
So they simply gave up on hoping that Rhine could help them solve their current predicament.
Because the three of them were at a deadlock, they decided to ask Wen Yishu for her opinion.
Wen Yishu had the same idea as Huo Xiaoguan. Of course, she suggested that the two of them should first check the online news and then take action after they had enough of the latest defense information.
The two of them were really unlucky to go out this time. They didn’t have anything with them. Fortunately, the way back to the apartment was not very far.
With two votes in favor and one against, the three of them decided to take the risk.
Wen Yishu told the three of them about the dangers inside the apartment. She wasn’t very clear about the situation downstairs either.
But it was always good to have them on guard. The lifeguard, Huang Fei, had put in a lot of effort when the two of them came ashore, and they couldn’t abandon her.
After reporting their safety to Wen Yishu, Huang Fei, who didn’t have a quantum computer, and the three of them started getting information from their respective channels, waiting to confirm with Wen Yishu again before they set off.
After learning that her friends were safe, Wen Yishu went downstairs again. The water was still running.
Bai Mi looked like she had just finished her work. She sat upright on the sofa, watching the water level in the sealed water line slowly rise.
Seeing Wen Yishu come down from upstairs, she turned her head slightly and asked, “How was it? Did you find anything?”
Wen Yishu: “When I went downstairs, the spider plant in the room had actually mutated, but I threw it out the window right at the beginning.”
“But the one in your room didn’t. It seems this is just a random event.”
After saying that, Wen Yishu felt a little embarrassed herself. After all, such a large-scale plant mutation outside could not be considered a random event.
The two of them almost simultaneously raised their hands and opened their quantum computers. At the beginning, the information intake was not enough. Now they finally had time to stop and see what the outside world was like.
On the live feed, besides the initial announcements from the Federal government and the cities,
There was also a hot topic called “Laws of the Apocalypse (Live Update)” pinned at the very top.
Wen Yishu clicked on it without hesitation.
- Warning! Immediately throw away all plants in your home, including vegetables and fruits. All plants can mutate. Anything that can take root and is still alive must be thrown away!
- Pets can also mutate. If possible, please isolate your pets and be careful.
- Please be vigilant of everyone around you. It is now known that people can also mutate. There are signs of human mutation. Please stay away from people with a fever. For more details, please see the pinned video.
Wen Yishu’s cold sweat almost came down instantly. She looked up and saw that Bai Mi was also looking at her.
The two of them pulled away from each other at the same time. The little bit of trust that had been built up so far seemed to have cracked open in the foundation of their trust, burying a seed of doubt.
This information had an official stamp on it. For now, the source was very credible.
Of course, there were still many details not mentioned, but so far, they all matched up.
There were no animals or people with fevers nearby, so Wen Yishu couldn’t judge whether the last two points were correct.
For their safety, Wen Yishu found the small first-aid kit at the entrance.
This was a standard feature of the apartment. She first took her own temperature.
The thermometer “beeped.” Her temperature was 37.6℃, a little high.
She didn’t know if it was because of her nervousness. Bai Mi stood behind her and read the number.
She suddenly asked, “Do you have a fever?”
Wen Yishu quickly shook her head. “No, maybe I’m too nervous, and my body temperature is rising.”
After waiting for a while, the temperature on her face dropped a bit. She nervously squeezed the thermometer tightly and took her temperature again.
This time, her temperature was normal. The number on it showed 37.1℃.
Wen Yishu let out a sigh of relief. She also took Bai Mi’s temperature. Her temperature was perfectly normal.
She rubbed her hands, feeling that the temperature in the room seemed to be getting colder and colder. Even with her thin jacket zipped up, she couldn’t feel any warmth.
But Bai Mi sat on the sofa as if nothing was wrong. Wen Yishu thought it was her own illusion until her teeth even started to chatter unconsciously, and she realized that it was indeed very cold.
The plants outside seemed to have calmed down. She no longer heard the occasional “thud” sound.
She was wearing slippers. Even though the apartment’s sound insulation was excellent, Wen Yishu still tiptoed upstairs to get dressed.
At the same time, a message came from Huo Xiaoguan’s side. They were ready to set off.
The weather outside was getting worse. It would be completely dark later. In a low-visibility environment, it was easy to get lost and accelerate hypothermia.
Wen Yishu was unable to help and was a little anxious. She wondered if she could go downstairs to meet the two of them later.
The premise was to ensure her own safety. The messages in the Rhine rescue group kept buzzing with greetings.
Seeing the minister’s message saying that those who didn’t reply would be treated as dead, Wen Yishu frowned in annoyance. The minister was usually very gentle. Saying something like this suddenly made her feel very uncomfortable.
With this attitude, she couldn’t bring herself to press the button to request rescue. Her white fingertips were hesitating whether to click on it.
A private message suddenly appeared, making her heart skip a beat.
Minister Wang: Xiao Wen, you’re okay, why didn’t you reply to my message?
