Apocalyptic Island - Chapter 28
Chapter 28
Wen Yishu felt her heart pound, almost bursting out of her chest.
Her blood was circulating at an extreme speed. Looking at the dazzling bounty, her entire being felt as if it had been thrown into a boiling oil pan, completely igniting.
Huo Xiaoguan cursed: “Is she crazy? Is she sick! Did we kill the director? Why is she talking nonsense?”
Ling Shuang added: “I think we did. The director turned into a Variant. Xiao Wen went out that day to save the team leader.”
Huo Xiaoguan: “I take that back. So what if Xiao Wen killed the director? Who decided on the wanted poster? Are they out of their minds? Why are they offering a bounty for Xiao Wen?”
Bai Mi coughed twice and pointed to a man in the news photo: “It should be him. I saw him at a meeting. He’s the commander-in-chief of this rescue mission, You Zhi.”
You Zhi’s expression was stern. The emblem on his shoulder emitted a cold silver light. This was an emblem that only people at the director level and above could wear.
Huo Xiaoguan cursed without hesitation: “Idiot, looking for trouble for no reason!”
You Ning shook her head: “They’re probably also blaming Yishu for the experimental samples in the second basement.”
The car was still driving. As they got closer, the traffic became more and more dense.
Wen Yishu unbuckled her seatbelt: “It’s okay. Once we get in, everyone will be the same. It’s a good thing I don’t have to consider going back to Rhine anymore. Let’s part ways here.”
Her tablet had everyone’s contact information. As long as they didn’t change, they could still keep in touch.
Now, Wen Yishu wasn’t worried about herself. The world had become like this. Even if the order in the safe zone was the same as before, it would be impossible for her to be caught in a short time. After all, the city had suffered a lot of damage, and it would take time to recover.
They were very close to entering the city. A tall, white metal wall stood tall outside. This was Binhai City’s advanced defense mechanism.
Every central city of the Federation had such a tall wall, so the morale in the city was still stable. Everyone could see a future and hope for their lives.
All vehicles were parked on both sides of the road. After inspection, they would be driven into the city.
Everyone got out at this rest area and prepared to enter the quarantine zone.
Wen Yishu put on her black raincoat. They gathered in a small alley. There were fewer people here. Everyone silently watched her.
Other than the clouds and the dark sky, it was more comfortable today than it had been in the past few days.
Ling Shuang’s eyes welled up with tears: “Xiao Wen, can’t you really come with us? Maybe I can go and talk to the people above. Maybe there’s a turning point.”
Huo Xiaoguan grabbed her and shook her head: “Don’t do that.”
Wen Yishu smiled, looking like the newcomer who reported for work at the beginning.
She patted Ling Shuang’s shoulder: “It’s okay. I’ll contact you. You all have to be careful. Tell them everything about me truthfully, but you don’t have to defend me. Just protect yourselves.”
The two of them watched Wen Yishu’s figure disappear with tears in their eyes. You Ning, who was standing on the side, seemed to have made up her mind. She took a step forward and said: “Yishu, I’ll go with you.”
Wen Yishu stopped her from moving forward: “Xiao Ning, you don’t have to do this. Don’t change your choice because of me. You have your own life.”
She didn’t want to be separated from her friend. She didn’t want to be without a backbone after losing her family. She subconsciously wanted to follow Wen Yishu, but this was also a decision she had thought through carefully.
She didn’t think there was anything wrong with this. She just wanted to find someone who could connect with her past life.
The other two also tried to persuade You Ning. This was a very risky move. She was a normal person and didn’t have many chances to make mistakes.
Wen Yishu pulled on her backpack straps. The backpack, which was almost half her height, didn’t feel heavy at all.
She looked into You Ning’s eyes and said solemnly: “There are many ways to protect yourself. Climbing up is one of them.”
You Ning’s heart was suddenly shaken. She almost held her breath. Her eyes became firm.
“I understand. You have to take care of yourself too!”
Wen Yishu nodded. After saying goodbye to the group, she turned and walked towards the other side.
There weren’t many cameras in this area. As long as she was careful to avoid them, she would be fine.
The three of them watched her figure disappear, unable to hold back their tears.
This feeling was really not good. Even Huang Fei, who had only been with them for a short time, felt a sharp ache in her heart.
Bai Mi stood beside them, threw her backpack, and quickly followed: “I’ll go give her something. Wait for me here.”
Ling Shuang caught the backpack she threw. She watched the two of them walk away eagerly, restraining the urge to follow them. She stood still.
Wen Yishu saw the little tail following her. She slowed down and turned towards the depths of the traffic.
Bai Mi followed her closely. When she sped up and turned, Bai Mi stopped at the end of the traffic. The person in front of her had disappeared.
She felt someone pat her shoulder. She turned around and saw Wen Yishu standing behind her.
“What’s wrong, team leader? Do you want to come with me too?”
Bai Mi shook her head, took a pair of glasses and two small headsets from her pocket: “Here, take this.”
Wen Yishu looked down at the glasses. They were like wind goggles with a faint blue cold light. The titanium alloy frame had very smooth lines.
She had never seen such glasses on the market. Wen Yishu was mesmerized. The next second, the cold glasses were placed on her face. The curved lenses almost covered the wearer’s entire vision. The information exploded in front of her. The translucent interactive interface did not cover the person and the surrounding environment, but grew out of her retina like a spiderweb of information.
Her hand was grabbed and she was told to tap the side. All the information was simplified into a few lines.
This was definitely a product that was still in internal testing.
“What is this? Is it a locator just for me?” She also put on the two headsets from Bai Mi’s hand.
A familiar voice came from her ear: “Hello, researcher Wen Yishu. Aix is at your service.”
She looked at Bai Mi in confusion.
“Not exactly. It contains the initial information. There is no positioning system, only a one-way interactive communication code. But it’s good for single-user use to identify danger. As long as it’s not connected to the internet, it can’t locate you.”
Wen Yishu was a little dazed, but she quickly accepted it. All of Rhine’s new products had internal testing versions.
These glasses should not have been released yet. The previous generation was a simplified version of the holographic danger detector. After putting it on, it could detect anomalies and record popular science information. The previous generation was in the helmet that Bai Mi gave her.
It was also military stuff, and she even had the second generation for internal testing.
She knew the safety of this thing. More importantly, the price was something a poor person like her would never spend money to buy in her lifetime.
“Why are you giving this to me?”
Bai Mi lowered her eyes: “Just assume I want to locate you. If you don’t want it, you can take it off.”
Wen Yishu raised the glasses, secured the frame behind her ears, and did not refuse: “Thank you. But I hope the next time we meet, you’ll tell me the truth.”
Bai Mi looked at her for a long time without saying a word. She didn’t look away until her figure disappeared into the fog.
The line to enter the city was already long. Wen Yishu pulled down her hat and put on her mask. There were many people dressed like her.
So no one paid attention to her. The people lining up outside the city were very emotional. They had almost all escaped death to get here.
Although they had to pay a high amount of Federal dollars to get in, money was not as important as life. It was a blessing to have a safe place to live now.
Wen Yishu observed the crowd, listening to Aix’s instructions while moving unobtrusively to the outside.
The line of people stretched for hundreds of meters. She stood on the highway leading into the city, like a small ant.
She used her glasses to look at the guards at the gate. Everything on a person had to be checked, including taking off their glasses, masks, and hats to verify their identity before they could enter.
Although the wanted poster was issued by Rhine, it was hard to say that she wouldn’t be sent to prison as soon as she showed up.
She didn’t want to be killed by Rhine before the Variants got her.
Wen Yishu was a little speechless about herself. She didn’t know why she had taken a fancy to such a bad company at the beginning. She only thought about going to the top company and forgot to investigate the atmosphere and shady dealings inside.
However, these were not things that a small person like her could get in contact with. She searched the map while slowly following the crowd, looking for the best place to leave.
The people around her, perhaps because the signal had gotten better, slowly started to discuss the content on the live feed.
“The manual is updated. Do you guys have a signal? Come over and take a look. Wait a minute, who is this Wen Yishu?”
“Traitor to the Order Supporters? What does that mean? Did she kill ordinary people?”
“I know, I know. She’s a junior researcher at Rhine Technology, the Rhine Technology in Rongcheng, the internationally renowned Rhine Technology. It seems like she tortured and killed all her colleagues and stole the company’s experimental samples!”
As soon as these words came out, the crowd exploded.
“Is she crazy?! Why would she kill so many people? Although the order is a bit chaotic now, the Federation has already controlled the situation. Why would she still kill people? This kind of person should be executed like the second-class prisoners!”
The serious criminals in the federal prison were divided into three classes. The first class was fixed-term imprisonment. The second class was for heinous crimes, and the sentence was pending discussion, but there was basically not much controversy.
The third class was for death row inmates who would be executed immediately. In her case, even though her crimes were not yet clear, some people were already advocating for her to be executed.
Wen Yishu snorted coldly, looking at Ji Shuyi who was silently shouting on those people’s screens.
What a dirty and disgusting technology company. To cover up their experimental crimes, they were using an innocent person like her as a scapegoat.
This group of people, who were being used by public opinion, were still mindlessly supporting the culprit in their mouths.
Wen Yishu continued to walk outside, staying away from these people who were already dominated by their emotions.
As the crowd grew, she saw the towering city wall. It was not something she could climb.
She walked to a secluded tree. There were basically no people here. Everyone was afraid of plants and stayed far away from the trees that hadn’t been cleared yet.
She used her glasses to lock onto the team where Bai Mi was in the crowd.
A few people were standing together, looking around from time to time, trying to find Wen Yishu’s figure.
Only Bai Mi inadvertently glanced over here. Wen Yishu was squatting on a large tree branch and heard Aix’s voice from her headset: “Do you want to hide your location signal?”
“No, let her go in. I’ll leave as soon as I’m done watching.”
Aix’s gentle voice sounded: “Understood. Binhai City security quarantine. Your pass rate is 0. Please go to other areas.”
A picture sent by Bai Mi appeared in front of Wen Yishu. The shoulder emblems of the guards at the city gate were Rhine’s emblems.
To catch the rabbit in the trap, the headquarters had replaced all the guards with their own people.
Wen Yishu glanced at the picture and crossed it out. Her goal was in the city. No matter day or night, she would always find a chance to enter the city.
However, Wen Yishu didn’t have to wait long.
After she finished a can of food, the calm crowd suddenly became restless. The guards at the gate sped up.
They urged the crowd behind them to move forward quickly. A light rain began to fall from the sky. The originally stable road into the city became a little shaky.
Wen Yishu was squatting on the tree. She saw a sapling suddenly sprout from the stump of a large tree that was sawed off on the side of the road. The branches began to grow wildly the moment they touched the rainwater.
Huge roots meandered out of the asphalt road, pushing the solid ground apart.
This was a banyan tree. Its thick aerial roots grew quickly. It suddenly tightened around the neck of a person who was standing on the side of the road and easily threw him into the air. Blood splattered everywhere.
Screams rose and fell. The crowd scattered like birds and beasts. That person didn’t even have time to make a sound. The headless corpse fell on the tree stump.
The banyan tree’s roots plunged into his neck, and it began to grow in size at a speed visible to the naked eye.
Wen Yishu watched from a distance. The image in front of Bai Mi’s eyes shook. Countless people rushed towards the city gate. The guards soon couldn’t hold on and fired two shots into the sky, but they couldn’t stop the stampeding crowd.
She quickly ran towards the old banyan tree. A huge helicopter from the city quickly flew out.
Wen Yishu’s eyes lit up. There was no way to enter the city without being noticed than to do it right under their noses.
She almost turned into a ghost, hugging the tree shadows in the distance and quickly approaching the old banyan tree.
The rioting old banyan tree in front of her was in an angry state and was completely impossible to communicate with.
Seeing the black helicopter getting closer and closer, Wen Yishu took a deep breath. She quickly jumped into the growing crown of the old banyan tree, letting its thick aerial roots wrap around her waist.
She was thrown into the air like those people. She looked at the ground getting further and further away and felt that she was absolutely crazy.
She stretched her hands straight. Just as she was about to pass the helicopter, she tightly grabbed the parallel bars below it.
