Apocalyptic Island - Chapter 27
Chapter 27
Ling Shuang hadn’t finished her sentence when Bai Mi’s hand grabbed the car door and slammed it shut.
Although Wen Yishu was in the dominant position in front of her, she still felt inexplicably passive.
She subtly tried to move back, but was grabbed by the collar by Bai Mi’s pale knuckles. She couldn’t move forward or backward.
Those serious eyes looked at her: “Only the people who have been wronged know how wronged you are.”
Wen Yishu felt like she was about to laugh from anger. The fact was, she did laugh. She didn’t know why she felt a sense of powerlessness, like punching cotton.
Bai Mi was clearly the one who was twisting the facts, but she was outplayed. People only laugh when they are speechless.
She looked at Bai Mi’s pale lips. That strange thought from before came up again. People always have strange thoughts at inappropriate times, just like when you’re supposed to be thinking during a test, but your brain starts playing music.
Bai Mi: “Are you feeling guilty?”
Wen Yishu: “…”
“Enough!” She closed her eyes and let go of Bai Mi’s collar. “I believe you’re human.”
She was completely defeated. No one would teach a bionic person to say these things, right?
Wen Yishu took a deep breath, calming her emotions. Then she heard her say: “Actually, you’re right. It’s exactly what you think.”
Wen Yishu: “?”
In her disbelieving eyes, Bai Mi smiled sweetly: “Just kidding.”
The strange atmosphere vanished. Wen Yishu’s mouth twitched. She realized she had been played. The tentative sound of knocking on the car door came from outside: “Are you two okay? Is everything alright?”
Ling Shuang’s muffled voice came in. If the two of them weren’t close to the door, it would be impossible to hear.
Wen Yishu opened the car door. Ling Shuang and You Ning were standing outside, shivering.
Ling Shuang’s hand, which was about to knock on the door, stopped in mid-air. She cautiously asked: “Are you two okay? Don’t fight anymore.”
She mustered up her courage and said to the two of them. Wen Yishu’s face completely darkened. She looked at Bai Mi’s harmless expression and snorted coldly: “It’s nothing. I was helping her straighten her collar.”
“I don’t remember offending you in any way. Besides, I just saved you,” Bai Mi said calmly. She didn’t buy into this act. Her wrinkled collar seemed to be silently protesting.
Wen Yishu apologized without hesitation: “I’m sorry, team leader. I guess we’re even now.”
She knew in her heart whether the other person was a bionic person or not. Wen Yishu was not a person who would repay kindness with ingratitude. She was angry that Bai Mi was not telling the truth.
Seeing that the atmosphere between the two had eased, Ling Shuang and You Ning got into the car. It was so cold outside that even with down jackets on, they couldn’t stand it.
Fortunately, the road was not icy, and the two people who were clearing the cars in front also returned.
Everyone was exhausted, but this feeling of overcoming a difficult time together was really nice.
Huang Fei got in the car and drove through the crowd of cars.
Huo Xiaoguan, seeing that Wen Yishu was in relatively good condition, asked: “Xiao Wen, why did you suddenly collapse?”
Wen Yishu touched her aching back of the head: “I think I hit my head. Are you all okay?”
She temporarily kept the news of her ability’s evolution a secret. Later, when they entered the safe zone, Rhine would definitely question them carefully.
The less they knew, the safer they would be. Although she was not completely leaning towards Warp Speed now, she was prepared for any eventuality.
Hitting her head was not a small matter. You Ning stood up and looked at the back of Wen Yishu’s head. There seemed to be no sign of injury: “Are you okay?”
Her own injuries were not too bad because she was wearing a lot of clothes. It only hurt a lot at the beginning, but her bones were not hurt. After a while, she felt much better.
Wen Yishu shook her head: “I’m fine. After getting my ability, my recovery seems to be faster than a normal person’s. You don’t have to worry. Just check yourselves.”
She glanced at Bai Mi, who was sitting quietly in the back: “Why did the team leader faint? Is she okay?”
After Wen Yishu fell, she seemed to have become a different person. Everyone was wary of the flames. Those cold eyes met hers through the rearview mirror.
“I’m fine. You fainted, and all the firepower was focused on me.”
Wen Yishu was speechless by her and withdrew her gaze. The road ahead was not wide. They drove on an endless highway, rushing towards an unknown future.
Huang Fei drove all night and stopped near a rest area. The nearby road was very desolate and looked like it hadn’t been maintained for a long time.
The group got out of the car and saw a few factories surrounded by green wire fences.
The map showed that these were a few small electronic parts processing factories for export. They didn’t seem to pose any threat.
Under the impact of the developed manufacturing industry, these small factories that made nostalgic electronic products mainly relied on people who liked old things to survive.
The off-season and peak season depended on the popularity of old items on the market, so it was common for them to have a few months of downtime during the off-season.
These few parts factories were in a state of being closed. There was almost no one inside. It was very safe.
The group first parked the car, cut a section of the wire fence, and drove the car in.
The inside was completely industrialized. There were almost no plants to be seen. The damage to the various facilities was not great. At most, the road was broken by some plants.
Wen Yishu put her backpack on and discussed staying overnight here with the group. They would set off when it was completely light. The visibility during the day was better, and it was relatively safer.
Everyone agreed.
The people in the security room at the entrance had long been killed by the plants that broke through the windows. The inside was almost completely covered by pumpkin vines. Everything was hidden under the plants.
The group took a look and simply chose a relatively smaller workshop. They broke the lock and went in.
The workshop was very clean. Piles of materials were placed in the storage room. All the machines were unplugged. It was very tidy.
They carefully checked the place, pushed the machines to the back, and laid out their mats and sleeping bags on the ground before lying down to sleep.
They were in pairs. Wen Yishu and Bai Mi slept at the entrance.
Wen Yishu put the string-of-pearls plant from her pocket into a cup. The crystal she had obtained from the fish person had mysteriously disappeared.
The leaves of the string-of-pearls plant also seemed to have become more plump. It no longer had that withered feeling after expending energy.
The upgrade of her ability should be related to the crystal. Wen Yishu was more inclined to her own upgrade. That blow triggered a certain switch, allowing her to enter that state early.
Everyone was exhausted. She looked at the pitch-black ceiling. The sound of their even breathing came to her ears.
Except for Bai Mi next to her. She turned her head and looked at the person lying in the sleeping bag with her head sticking out.
Her smooth, long hair was tied on both sides. She was also looking at the ceiling. Feeling her gaze, she also looked back.
“What’s wrong? Are you still thinking about it?”
Wen Yishu completely calmed down: “I will find evidence.”
Bai Mi asked strangely: “I don’t know what you want to prove? Why are you being so mean to me?”
Wen Yishu sat up. In the darkness, she could only see a hint of brightness in the other person’s eyes.
“I hate being deceived.” She grabbed Bai Mi’s hand that was outside the sleeping bag. “Do you know that you have too many flaws? Just like this.”
Wen Yishu grabbed her warm arm and lay down. Soon, that section of her arm became cold in the cold room temperature.
She was a little confused. It was actually the same as a normal person. Just as she was about to let go, she heard Bai Mi’s weak voice: “Do you have to do this?”
Wen Yishu didn’t know why. Even though the other person was showing weakness, she still felt a surge of anger. She tightened her grip on the other person’s arm and waited for her to get cold and pull back.
She didn’t know how long it was. Until she fell asleep, Bai Mi didn’t pull her arm back.
The next day, Wen Yishu was woken up by several strange gazes.
It was already bright outside. Four people were standing not far from them, looking at the two of them with complicated expressions.
She silently withdrew her hand from Bai Mi’s, got up, and packed her things as if nothing had happened.
As she walked out, she could still hear Ling Shuang whispering to Bai Mi: “Team leader, Xiao Wen didn’t mean it. Maybe she’s been under too much pressure recently and always sees you as an imaginary enemy.”
Wen Yishu’s fists tightened. She paused and heard Bai Mi’s voice coming from inside: “It’s okay. I understand.”
Wen Yishu sneered. She didn’t continue listening. In front of her, she was not a threat to anyone in the team. From yesterday’s situation, even if she shouted that Bai Mi was a bionic person, no one would believe her.
She was consciously learning, making it impossible for people to distinguish. Wen Yishu even wondered if she was the one who was wrong. But everything yesterday was too abnormal. She also wanted to know what the purpose of such a bionic person was by mixing in with them. She decided to just wait and see.
After the group packed their things, they set off again. After driving for so long yesterday, the journey was already halfway over. The rest of the journey would inevitably start to get closer to the city center.
The RV drove past a toll booth. The toll bar was already raised. The light on the toll lane was not on. This place had been without power for a long time. Huang Fei drove the car carefully around the cars that had crashed haphazardly and successfully got onto the highway.
The RV sped towards the city. The number of cars along the way gradually increased.
The surrounding buildings also became modernized. The residential area had never been so quiet before.
There were no cars flowing under the high bridge. The plants on the street were lush, wrapping around every car and person they could reach.
The collapsed houses turned the entire clean street into ruins. It was dark. Wen Yishu could only see a few solar-powered lights flickering, barely surviving.
Like the people who were still alive in the ruins, they didn’t know when the end of life and light would come.
She just glanced at it and then withdrew her gaze. Everyone in the car fell silent. The miserable scenes everywhere made this road look like it was leading to hell.
Suddenly, she heard Bai Mi’s voice: “Throw away your quantum computer.”
Everyone looked at her. She had already opened the window and thrown the quantum computer on her wrist out of the window.
Wen Yishu suddenly remembered the positioning function on it and immediately threw her quantum computer out of her wrist.
The RV was speeding. The wind was howling in everyone’s ears. As soon as the window was opened, the coldness spread all over their bodies. Although the group was confused, they still threw away their quantum computers.
The metal plate made a “clang” sound on the ground and was run over by a later car. The glass on it still didn’t explode. The car gradually drove away until the reflection on the ground could no longer be seen.
Huo Xiaoguan asked with some confusion: “What’s wrong?”
Wen Yishu looked at the map and began to direct Huang Fei to change direction.
“Our quantum computers have positioning and survival detection systems. When I was in my room, I was monitored by the director.”
The human survival detection was an open secret before. Everyone didn’t think about it in that way. What was originally a good thing had now become a bad thing.
“It’s okay. I made a shielding device for everyone before, but it’s not so safe on the elevated bridge, so I threw it away,” Bai Mi explained.
Everyone looked at her with surprise, not knowing when she had done these things.
Fortunately, Wen Yishu was prepared. It didn’t matter even if she used a normal communication device.
She connected her tablet to the car’s screen, and a map appeared on it.
The only drawback now was that the signal was poor, and they couldn’t receive real-time news.
But this wasn’t a big problem. If nothing unexpected happened, they would be able to reach the central area of Binhai City tonight.
The number of cars in front was increasing. Huang Fei drove more and more carefully.
Along the way, they could also see other cars, but they mostly didn’t dare to approach. They just kept a distance from them.
The reason why Binhai City wasn’t blocked yet was due to its strong urban construction and timely clearing. Even the tablet with a poor signal received the official notifications and various escape route plans.
The local federal government didn’t have enough rescue personnel, so they let the residents escape to the safe zone on their own.
The scenery outside the window flashed by. Wen Yishu saw a large cluster of white flowers blooming on a huge liquidambar tree next to the elevated bridge from a distance, like a giant marshmallow. The dense branches almost occupied the entire road. The thick trunk even broke a part of the guardrail and the road.
She saw many small black dots flying in the air. As the car got closer, she saw what those flying black dots were.
They were cars that were thrown away. Huang Fei exclaimed and stopped with an emergency brake.
The people in the back seat were confused. They were hit by the things that fell on them. Fortunately, these things didn’t have much weight. After cleaning them up, they all got up to see what was going on in front.
“What’s wrong??” Huo Xiaoguan asked anxiously.
Huang Fei looked at the road ahead in shock: “The plants in front are rioting. I don’t know why.”
The distance was too far. Wen Yishu couldn’t sense the specific information of that tree. The vision of the group in the back was limited. They could only see the low ground and didn’t know what was happening in front.
Just as she was about to open the window, she heard a “bang” sound. A car was thrown in front of them. Fortunately, it was an empty car, and no one was hurt.
The car falling from the sky smashed a large pit in the road in front of them. It was a small new energy vehicle. The upper part was completely smashed.
The glass shattered all over the ground. The battery at the bottom exploded and caught fire due to the huge impact. It sprayed into the sky for a while and then extinguished automatically.
The group breathed a sigh of relief. There was no risk of explosion for now.
The cars behind them also stopped one after another. The road in front was still intact. For a moment, no one moved, all waiting for the first brave person to go forward.
Wen Yishu glanced at the time. It was already 1:00 PM. She had to drive through this area to reach the base before dark.
She immediately swapped seats with Huang Fei. The road behind was blocked by more and more cars. It was too late to turn back.
Wen Yishu gripped the steering wheel tightly. After everyone in the back was secured, she stepped on the gas pedal all the way and rushed forward at high speed.
The number of cars on the road was getting smaller and smaller. The closer they got, the more oppressive the liquidambar tree felt. It was like a towering mountain with no end in sight, standing straight in the sky, casting a huge shadow on the road, enveloping every car.
All the cars were like juggling balls from a circus that were thrown away. The ones that the branches couldn’t catch fell directly onto the road and under the bridge, exploding like firecrackers.
Wen Yishu looked in all directions. With a flick of the tail, the tires made a piercing scream on the solid asphalt road. She narrowly avoided the cars that were falling down.
The liquidambar tree didn’t seem to have much interest in their car. The cars that were thrown up were all small new energy vehicles.
The cars behind them saw their rapid sprint and all broke out in a cold sweat. Then they felt relieved and learned from Wen Yishu, driving past quickly.
This included some car owners who wanted to turn back. They first cursed Wen Yishu and her group for being stupid, and then, after seeing them pass, they were eager to try.
These car owners were part of the later batch. They looked smugly at the people who were clearing the way in front. While cursing, they stepped on the gas. When they drove to the center of the road, the branches that were thrown high up suddenly grabbed the few small cars behind them like ghost hands. The people in the cars didn’t even have time to scream. A feeling of weightlessness came, and the small cars drew a parabola in front of the huge tree shadow, taking a perfect roller coaster ride.
The “bang, bang, bang” sounds from behind were endless. Wen Yishu drove at 160 yards, leaving all the cars behind and driving away.
The route on the map was getting shorter and shorter. When they were twenty kilometers away from the safe zone, she handed the driving over to Ling Shuang again.
She sat in the passenger seat and began to check the news on the live feed.
The closer they got to the safe zone, the better the tablet signal got. The news on the live feed was gradually starting to load.
Wen Yishu felt a little relieved. She was about to import the previous information and check it.
As soon as she raised her hand to connect the data, You Ning in the back seat let out a low cry. A red, bolded wanted poster appeared in front of her eyes.
The wanted poster was different from the Federation’s red text and yellow background. The red border was more concise. Generally, only large listed companies would issue such announcements.
She saw a familiar face on it—
Ji Shuyi sat on a quarantine bed in the safe zone. Her fingernails were full of dirt. She held her head and faced the camera. Her expression was a little dazed. It wasn’t until the reporter who came to question her handed the microphone to her mouth that she spoke: “I am Ji Shuyi, an assistant to the director of the Third Research Institute of Rhine Headquarters in Rongcheng. There is a researcher in the Rhine Apartment in the Sea Guard Zone. She killed the director and destroyed the experimental samples in the basement. She is a traitor to Rhine. She is the junior researcher of the Third Team, Wen Yishu!”
She pointed to the bruises and wounds on her body, accusing them with tears streaming down her face. This was just an interruption.
Wen Yishu saw her entry photo and on-the-job ID photo, which were clearly displayed in this message. A large title was printed on it:
Traitor to the Order Supporters! A reward of one million Federal dollars for the former junior researcher of Rhine, Wen Yishu!
