Apocalyptic Island - Chapter 26.1
Chapter 26.1
The RV drove on the main road. The plants did not approach during the day, and Wen Yishu was mostly resting with her eyes closed.
The circular island route was long and desolate. She didn’t know if it was because of her, but other than a few sections of the road that were completely covered by plants, making it difficult to pass, they basically didn’t suffer any attacks.
This feeling gave her the illusion that she was traveling.
The sky gradually darkened, and the driver also changed from Huang Fei to You Ning.
She still sat next to her. It seemed that the sun hadn’t come out for several days. Wen Yishu looked at the bright light on the horizon and then looked at the rescue situation on the seaside.
The apocalypse manual that was pinned on top of the live feed had been updated with many new things. They were newly discovered species, not just plants, but also animals.
The types of human mutations were also very numerous. The officials had found a kind of crystal in the corpses of these people. Its use was currently unknown, and it was temporarily named “Ectocrystal.”
And the trend of Variant evolution had been discovered in various places. The primary Variants were still within the range that humans could fight against. When they encountered Tier 2, the situation began to become a little uncontrollable.
After evolution, the speed, stamina, and health of the Variants all increased greatly. It was like fighting monsters in a game. If a person’s equipment was not upgraded, they would die instantly when they encountered a high-level monster.
Wen Yishu scrolled through her quantum computer. The cold blue light shone on her face. The car window reflected her porcelain-white profile. The road ahead became wide again.
The surrounding streetlights had all gone out due to the destruction of their foundations. You Ning had her high beams on. She was in a much better mood now and could control her tears.
She chatted with Wen Yishu intermittently. The previous animosity was treated as if it had never happened.
Now that she thought about it, she still didn’t have the courage to rush into the waves like that. Her parents would rather she lived than they did.
She was grateful to her friend for pulling her out of such a difficult time.
Wen Yishu took out a tissue and pressed it on her face. You Ning didn’t know when she had started crying again. Perhaps this process of acceptance would be a long one.
She wiped her face indiscriminately. Suddenly, Wen Yishu’s hurried voice came to her ears: “Stop the car!”
Her body reacted before her mind did. She stepped on the brake. The car still slid for a distance before it stopped.
For some reason, several RVs were parked haphazardly on the originally empty road, looking like a car accident from a distance.
Wen Yishu’s face was not good. The map on her quantum computer did not show any congestion or obstacles here. The fact that there were no reports of errors and no detection was possible for only one reason: the disaster here was man-made.
They stopped about fifty to sixty meters away from these cars. Under the car lights, the group saw the RVs in front of them. They seemed to be the same brand as the ones that were parked in the camp before.
The tires of these cars were almost all deflated, making them much shorter than normal cars.
The others behind her poked their heads forward: “What’s wrong? Why did we stop? Did something happen?”
If this one-way road was impassable, they would have to risk going on the highway. The dangers on the highway were more than on the road. Once the buildings and road collapsed, they would have no way to escape.
“Someone is probably blocking the road ahead.” Wen Yishu had already started searching for other routes, but this was the best route recommended by the quantum computer from the beginning.
If it were another place, they would have to go a long way around. Putting aside whether they could even go, the little bit of gas in the car would not be enough for the rest of the journey.
Gas stations should be a major disaster area for Variants. They should avoid them if possible.
Ling Shuang poked her head out to look. She had slept enough in the car during the day and was now full of energy. She couldn’t sleep at all: “Where? Where? Let me see!”
As her voice fell, more than a dozen people really walked out from behind the RV.
Everyone: “…”
Huo Xiaoguan covered her mouth and pulled out the baseball bat from her bag.
This was the weapon she had taken from the first floor. The quality was very good, and it was very durable for beating people up.
The bald man, who was the leader, was reflecting light from his head under the high beams. He led his group of subordinates and ran towards them.
“Are they here to rob us? Or should we just leave?”
Huo Xiaoguan couldn’t even imagine how absurd it was for her to say this. This word could actually be encountered in a civilized society.
And they weren’t robbing the Federation’s heavy metal cargo trucks, but ordinary people like them.
In just three days, had the outside world become so chaotic?
Wen Yishu shook her head and said: “I’m afraid we can’t leave anymore.”
The car dashboard that was just fine suddenly let out an alarm. The tire pressure value popped up.
The back tires were still at a normal 260, but the front tires had already turned red.
Even if she had stopped them in time, these people had already put down the tire stoppers in front. The group were all good, law-abiding citizens. Before seeing this, they had no idea that such a thing could be done.
Seeing the group getting closer, everyone in the car simply got out.
After all, an RV was not bulletproof. If it was smashed, their experience would be very bad later on.
It was the same everywhere. Most of the people who lived in the suburban areas were undocumented residents or were relatively poor.
The Federation had clear instructions on population centralization, so what kind of good people could appear in the middle of nowhere now?
The bald man and his group had been squatting here for two days. They were originally local thugs and hooligans.
In the past few days when the plants were acting strangely, they had spent the most frightening days. Then they found that other than the beginning, there was no danger in the next few days.
People who were already idle gathered together, wanting to take advantage of this chaotic time to rob passing people and make a fortune.
However, the location of this suburban area was really too remote. Other than the initial period when the upheaval broke out and then calmed down, a few camping cars passed by. They put the tire stoppers on the road, punctured the tires, and then killed people and stole their goods. After that, no more cars passed by here.
After all, the number of visitors to the scenic area here was limited. The ten-odd mouths had almost eaten all the things they had robbed in the past two days. If they didn’t get any new goods, they would leave this area and go to other places to rob again.
Fortunately, heaven does not disappoint those who try. Just when everyone was about to give up, another one came.
The cigarette in the bald man’s mouth burned quickly in the wind. He excitedly led his subordinates and rushed towards the RV in front.
The happy laughter of a few men came from behind: “After we kill this car of fat sheep, we’ll go to the next place.”
The bald man snorted, took a big puff of his cigarette, tightened his grip on the crowbar in his hand, and quickened his pace.
It was really cold outside. The gas in the RVs they had stopped was almost gone. He really couldn’t stand these rich people eating, drinking, and having fun everywhere. People like them at the bottom deserved to suffer and work hard.
Suddenly, the RV that was just running turned off. Only the high beams were still on. A few people got out of the car. Because they were against the dazzling high beams, the bald man couldn’t see the faces of the people in front of him clearly.
He used his hand to block the light, squinted, and led the others to the side. Only then did he see that six women had gotten out of the car.
His originally nervous mood suddenly relaxed. He spat on the ground, tightened his grip on the crowbar, and shouted at the group: “If you know what’s good for you, get lost now. It’ll save us the trouble.”
The group was lightly dressed and didn’t carry any backpacks. They had rested well and were in excellent condition now.
Ling Shuang rolled her eyes at the bald man: “What are you acting tough for? Who are you?”
The bald man was full of anger. The people he had killed in the past few days were all people with no fighting ability. His confidence had expanded to the extreme. He wouldn’t even pay attention to these women.
Too lazy to talk nonsense with these people, he picked up the crowbar in his hand and swung it at them.
Wen Yishu frowned. She watched her friend swing the baseball bat and hit a man’s head, splitting it open. An infinite anger seemed to explode in her heart. She completely ignored the sticks hitting her, just knowing how to attack. She was in a frenzy.
Bai Mi’s right hand, which was bitten, was not very flexible yet. There were too many opponents. They each had to face three or four people. Although her body had the blessing of her ability, she was only one person and had to protect the rest of the group. She was a little overwhelmed.
Soon, the painful cries of Ling Shuang and the others came to her ears. The bald man and his group were not particularly skilled, but there were many of them. Although the group had been exercising in the past few days, they still couldn’t make up for the lack of strength in a short time.
Soon, a gap appeared in their defense. Wen Yishu saw a blow about to hit Bai Mi’s arm. The string-of-pearls plant in her pocket was still looking wilted. She could only step forward and block the stick that the man was swinging over.
A sudden pain came from her back. She felt her head spin. The screams of Ling Shuang and Huo Xiaoguan, and Bai Mi calling her name, kept ringing in her ears.
“Wen Yishu, are you okay?”
She swung a stick at the person who wanted to sneak attack Bai Mi. She stood there dizzy, staring straight ahead. The world in front of her suddenly seemed to be filled with a bloody red color. Green plant stems and vines wrapped around Bai Mi’s body in front of her.
A heavy iron stick smashed into her. She stood there motionless as if she had no feeling.
The man who was swinging the stick was stunned. He wanted to swing another stick, but the woman who was just standing motionless this time grabbed the stick he swung over.
Her eyes looked at him like inorganic dead things. A huge force pulled the long stick out of his hand. The next second, that flat, prying stick pierced through the man’s throat.
He didn’t even make a sound. He fell down unwillingly with his eyes wide open. After twitching a few times on the ground, he was gone.
The bloody red color in front of her eyes became even more swollen. It wasn’t that the world turned red, but that Wen Yishu’s eyes were filled with purplish-black blood vessels. There were even green patterns in her eyes.
Wen Yishu’s consciousness could no longer support her body. She fell down.
The commotion here made both sides go into a killing frenzy. You Ning’s injuries were especially serious.
She didn’t know how many times she had been hit with a stick. She wiped the blood from the corner of her mouth and saw that a few people were hitting in the direction of Wen Yishu.
“What’s wrong with Xiao Wen? Is Xiao Wen okay?” Ling Shuang’s voice was hoarse from screaming. She didn’t know why Wen Yishu suddenly fell down.
You Ning almost rushed up to take the beating for Wen Yishu when she saw Bai Mi, whose hand was a little clumsy just now, run back to the car and take out a flamethrower.
