Apocalyptic Island - Chapter 25.1
Chapter 25.1
“Are you crazy?” You Ning couldn’t control her volume. She spoke loudly, and everyone looked at her.
Wen Yishu said calmly: “What’s wrong? I have my own plans.”
Huo Xiaoguan laughed twice, trying to ease the atmosphere. She wanted to pull her to sit down: “Don’t get agitated. Let’s talk nicely. No wonder you’re friends. Your ideas are surprisingly amazing.”
Everyone: “…”
She was referring to You Ning wanting to see the giant ship on the way, which was bringing up a sore subject.
Ling Shuang simply covered her mouth, her face apologetic: “You guys continue.”
With this interruption, You Ning’s agitated mood gradually calmed down. She took a deep breath and continued: “You know Rhine won’t let go of any researcher who goes to Warp Speed. Even if you don’t want to go back to Rhine, you don’t have to use this method to declare the end of your career, do you?”
Warp Speed Life. Just by hearing the name, you know how bold this new technological star is: a company with technology that surpasses the speed of light.
Over the years, Warp Speed had been a dark horse in the industry. Although their methods were openly dirty, they were considered transparent and clean compared to Rhine.
Wen Yishu said calmly: “It’s not necessarily that bad.”
Seeing her determined eyes, You Ning knew that persuasion was useless.
She had known her stubborn personality since college. A person who had no money or power, could get into the best university in Rongcheng, and then enter Rhine after graduation was truly not an ordinary person.
For her to have come this far, the help her family gave her far exceeded her own efforts.
She really didn’t know what her friend was thinking. If she joined Warp Speed Life, even if she left, no other company would want her anymore.
After all, no one wanted to offend Rhine. Such an iron-fisted approach allowed Rhine to stand firm in the industry. Whether it was technology or talent, they were at the forefront.
Even in the apocalypse, when the outside world had changed, these elites would still be at the forefront of ordinary people. She didn’t need to cut ties with the entire industry and gamble on an uncertain future.
Wen Yishu simply calmly told everyone her decision. She had always been her own master, and no one could change what she wanted to do.
The fact that Warp Speed could stand firm under Rhine’s heavy pressure meant that it must have its own strengths. Of course, she didn’t have to have a place to belong. If this place wasn’t suitable, there would always be a place where she could survive.
She just didn’t want her friends to worry, so she temporarily told them the decision she had made.
However, judging from the expressions on the faces of the people opposite, her joining Warp Speed was more worrying than having no one to rely on.
Wen Yishu didn’t want to discuss these things too much. The future was an unknown variable. The most important thing was to live well in the present.
She looked at Bai Mi’s hand. The wound on her arm still needed to be re-treated. After all, there were many bacteria in a person’s mouth. Although it was through clothes, medicines were scarce now, and they had to be prepared for any eventuality. Otherwise, it would be bad if it got infected and inflamed.
She pulled Bai Mi aside, rolled up her sleeve, and checked the wound.
The skin around the tooth mark had turned a little purple, and the wound on it had stopped bleeding, but it still looked very scary.
She took out the iodine from the medicine cabinet and disinfected it again. Her mood lightened up. She had suspected that the other person was not a real person, but a bionic person would not need to and could not do this.
Warm skin, living blood vessels. Wen Yishu inexplicably recalled the scene of Bai Mi making luncheon meat before. Why did she have a craving for flesh and blood at that time? And when she first arrived at the apartment two days ago, the string-of-pearls plant slid over the back of her hand. Were these things all related?
Everything happened too suddenly to be verified. She tried to connect all the details and wrote them down for future use.
Wen Yishu used a cotton swab with ointment on it to apply it to the yellowish-brown disinfected area and then completely covered it with a sterile dressing.
After doing all this, she didn’t care about the others and quietly lay down, completely unaware of the cold gaze that left a gentle look on her.
The wind howled outside. She got into her sleeping bag to block out most of the sound. After having her ability, her senses were much more acute than others, so the environment at night also seemed much noisier.
To ensure that Wen Yishu, the main force, would have good energy tomorrow, they took turns standing guard. She fell asleep in this environment, surrounded by her friends.
When she woke up the next day, it seemed to be much quieter outside. The water level from the tsunami had dropped to halfway up the mountain. The road where they had stayed for a while yesterday was also piled with trash.
You Ning’s eyes were swollen. She didn’t know if she had been crying all night. Her eyes flinched when she met Wen Yishu’s gaze. She silently ate breakfast.
Perhaps she didn’t know how to face the other person. She could only look at her quantum computer over and over again, praying for a miracle to happen.
Wen Yishu opened her quantum computer. On it was a live feed of helicopters rescuing people in Binhai City. The area of the tsunami was large, and many coastal houses were completely destroyed.
The people who originally lived by the sea had a much higher survival rate than in other places because there were fewer plants. Many people on the edge had moved to the seaside during these days, but they didn’t expect to lose their lives here due to the tsunami. It was infinitely sad. No one commented on how lucky these people living by the sea were anymore. After all, no one wanted to live in an area attacked by a tsunami, with no chance to escape.
When Wen Yishu went out, she found that the rain had stopped at some point. The sky was gray, and there was a fishy smell of seawater in the air.
Everyone couldn’t help but cover their noses when they came out. Wen Yishu felt that the breakfast she had just eaten was about to come out of her mouth.
She quickly walked around to the back of the office area, ready to go down the mountain.
In just one night, the accumulated water on the road had frozen into ice. The remaining water droplets on the steps had formed a thin layer of ice. It was slippery to step on, and one could easily fall.
The group pulled out the trekking poles that had been thrown in the trash can and were left uncleaned. They walked slightly apart and started to go down the mountain.
Going down the mountain was much easier than going up. The back of this mountain was almost entirely made of stone roads, with no weeds in the middle.
The road was also relatively much flatter. Below was a wide highway. It was more than 500 kilometers from here to the safe zone in the city center. They decided to go down and find a car that could be driven. If they relied on walking, it would take them several days and nights.
They went up the mountain quickly yesterday, but they walked down a little slower. Their luggage was not light. Without the need to escape for their lives, the group simply slowed down for safety.
After more than half an hour, they reached the bottom of the mountain. The air here was much better than facing the sea from the top.
This scenic area was a rarely visited place, but the parking lot in front was full of RVs of people who had come to travel.
Further away was the tent camping area. The few tents set up on the open grass were wrapped in countless messy vines, turning into green burial mounds.
Camping equipment was scattered on the ground. The messy grass was covered with carpets and rotten food that they didn’t have time to pack up.
No human corpses were visible, but there were some lost shoes. She didn’t know if the people who were here had run away or died.
It seemed that when the plants first rioted, they didn’t have time to drive and could only flee in a panic.
The group searched the camping area and found nothing useful.
Bai Mi went back to her old profession, picking locks. Most of the cars now were smart-driven, but RVs were rarely produced. People had many choices for long-distance travel.
The space of an RV was not big enough. Traveling was not as fast as a rail transit, and it was not as comfortable as staying in a hotel. It was gradually eliminated from the pace of the times.
Therefore, the models of these cars were very old, and they were equipped with old-fashioned smart systems. It was not difficult to unlock them at all.
Fortunately, there were not many plants next to the parking lot. Only a few cars were damaged. Most of them were still intact.
Wen Yishu moved the spare tires of the other cars to the largest car in the camp.
She also took out the gasoline inside as a backup. Although electric cars had completely taken up most of the market, RVs were still mostly gasoline-powered, which was convenient for them to refuel and move forward quickly.
After moving the useless things from the car, the group ransacked the remaining cars. They hung a few spare tires on the back. There was also a lot of food in these cars, and the models and fuel were mostly the same, which added a lot of convenience for them to use the cars.
Huang Fei got in the car first to test it. After starting it, the RV buzzed for a while and gradually returned to normal.
The car was fine. The group’s spirits lifted, and they all got in.
When Huang Fei turned on the air conditioner, the group felt the cold air on their bodies quickly recede. They all felt much more comfortable.
The RV slowly moved. The wide road was a little bumpy, but the RV’s good shock absorption made up for this shortcoming.
The group sat on the clean floor to rest. The food and medicine they collected from the mountain were piled next to them. Fortunately, the RV drove the same as a regular electric car. Huang Fei’s expression was focused, and she looked straight ahead.
The RV drove all the way. After leaving the scenic area, the plants on the road gradually increased. The street trees on both sides grew very tall, and their crowns covered the sky, blocking the light from above.
The asphalt road also bulged slightly due to the strong tree roots. Huang Fei drove more cautiously. Wen Yishu also sat in the passenger seat, paying attention to the movements around her at all times.
There were basically no people here for a road trip. A few broken-down tour buses were faintly visible on the road.
They didn’t get out of the car to check the situation on the vehicles. This was agreed upon before they hit the road. No matter what situation they encountered and needed help, they should not get out of the car impulsively.
After driving for half an hour, everything was peaceful. After the RV turned a corner, it completely drove onto the mountain road that branched off from the provincial road.
The huge tree crowns completely blocked the view of the car that could still be seen just now. At the same time, a helicopter flew by above. The dense branches and the closed nature of the RV blocked the noise from high in the sky. The people below were completely unaware of the helicopter flying by above.
The black warplane blew a whirlwind and flew to the location of Rhine. On the plane were several fully armed mercenaries. The emblem on their arms was not the Federal Eagle Eye emblem, but a pair of intertwined blue wings. In the middle, a tightly stuck gear was inlaid with a glowing three-dimensional prism. The pair of wings were designed to be a DNA double helix. If someone familiar with the emblem saw it, they would find that the seventh spiral segment was deliberately designed to be broken.
From different angles, one could also see the silver gear slightly turning, as if the gene sequence on it was alive and moving.
This was the emblem of Rhine Technology. You Zhi looked at the light dot on his quantum computer where Rhine was, signaling the pilot to stop. The apartment building below was already submerged by the seawater, with only the top terrace exposed.
It was too unsafe for the helicopter to stop there. Several mercenaries watched You Zhi’s expression. This man was very young, but he had already reached the rank of a Tier 3 researcher. His authority was much higher than theirs.
His face was gloomy. He could not find any signs of any living beings in the second basement.
